    Our newborn was very long and looked very cramped in her Silver Cross car seat from day one and we were worried she couldn’t breath properly. Thanks so much for the video I have taken my newborn wedge out too early. I cant work out which way it goes back in please can you help? Also having problems with little ones head falling forward when asleep.

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wedge goes under the cover with the curved side down and the flat side facing up.
      It's important that the baby is pulled down with their nappy toching the buckle and that the straps are no higher than level with the shoulders, and that they're flat and tight. Are you using the ISOfix base? In certain cars the ISOfix base can make the car seat too upright if the back seat is quite sloped. If this is the case in your car? If so if you use the seat without its base you can angle it into the right position because the bottom is curved. Just make sure that you don't recline it more than 45 degrees.

    • @lauraclarkson4413
      @lauraclarkson4413 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RearFacingToddlers aww thank you. We are using it without isofix base. I think our car seats are slanted forward which if the car seat is laying flat to the chair then he could be tilted forward. Thank you

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You you can play about with the angle of a belt fitted infant carrier a little bit. Just make sure that the lap belt is pulled really tight and that 45 degree angle is important. Have you seen my videos on how to install an infant carrier and where the carry handle should be?

    Thank you - at what age would you recommend for the wedge to be removed - I have an 8 week old baby and he just seems so uncomfortable in the seat (he was 5 weeks prem) and still only 51cm and around 7lb 5oz thank you

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I recommend leaving the wedge in until the shoulder straps in their highest position have become too low. This won't happen until the baby is at least a year old. Young babies need the recline that the wedge provides, when the wedge is removed the seat becomes much deeper and more upright. Your baby's corrected age is only three weeks, so you absolutely still need the wedge.
      This is from the Silver Cross Simplicity's manual: 'The lumbar wedge can be removed in the later stages of using the Simplicity Infant Carrier. Silver Cross always recommend that you use the wedge for as long as possible.'

      Hi I agree with this I have a 10 week old who I have tried seating with the shoulder straps at every height and he still looks very crunched up - when he cries he can’t seem to make enough noise as if struggling to breathe properly. I have considered taking out the wedge but very worried that this is not safe either! Any advice would be great

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sineadsmithson3490 Ten weeks (12 by now...) is still too young to take the wedge out. It's hard to say without seeing your little boy in the seat. Are you sitting him high up enough in the seat? He should be just behind the buckle, sometimes I see babies who are too low and almost on top of the buckle which pushes it forward and can also make the baby too scrunched up.

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are the straps in their lowest position and still too high? If so you can roll up a muslin and place it between the crotch straps and the baby's nappy so that the baby fits the harness better.

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The round side faces the bottom and the baby sits on the flat side. I can't remember if the round bump is exactly in the middle, in most the bump is at one end and it's flatterr at the other. In that case the thickest part goes at the bottom and the flatter end faces the backrest.

    • @RearFacingToddlers

      If they're on the lowest setting then he may well need them a bit higher now. They basically need to be just one notch below level, any lower than that will make them difficult to tighten and they will dig into his shoulders too much.

      Do you have the straps as low as they can go and is the wedge in under the bottom part of the cover? If so and it's still too big, you can move the baby up so that her shoulders touch the straps, and then put a rolled up musin in the gap between her nappy and the buckle.

    Is the cushion only for tiny newborns? My baby is 3 months, about 6,5 kg and 62 cm. should I keep the cushion in and the harness in a higher position or take the cushion out and lower the harness?

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The instruction booklet says to leave the cushion in for as long as possible. That means that it has to stay in until it no longer fits with the headrest in its highest position. That won't happen until the baby is about a year old.

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The instructions say that the wedge needs to be left in until the straps in their highest position become too low. That's unlikely before about 15-18 months. If he doesn't look comfortable you may need to move the straps up a little, but he is too young/little for the wedge to be removed.

    How long do you keep it on 1 st setting for

    • @RearFacingToddlers
      @RearFacingToddlers  ปีที่แล้ว

      The straps need to be level with the shoulders. A little lower is fine, but they should not be any higher. You gradually move the straps up as the baby grows, so that they are always at the correct height. All babies are different, so it's impossible to say how long a baby will have the straps at a certain height.

      I think most manufacturers just give the basic instructions, but don't actually have much hands on experience. People like me who work with car seats and see them all the time, don't just get to know how they should be installed and used, we also see certain mistakes being made over and we can then give more detailed instructions not only on how to use the seats, but also on how to avoid common mistakes.

    Silver cross simplicity as I understand it is only crash tested to the bare minimum unlike companies like joie and maxi cosi who do extra in house testing? As a car seat lady I'd expect you to know about the safety of alot of car seats and warning people of the dangers of car seats like this that only protect in a crash up to 40mph even then I wouldn't trust them.
    Also the generic branded seats like nania obaby supermarket cheap brand seats, mothercare halfords Asda's Tesco little tikes Fisher price etc that are made by the company team tex and re branded by these companies, they fall apart and break in a crash and are really dangerous

      Lucy, the bare minimum for R44/04 is 30mph, which is the speed that the cheaper seats are tested at. The ADAC independently test car seats at 40mph and these are the results used by Which? Magazine. 40mph is also the test speed at the manufacturer in-house testing you refer to. The Simplicity got an 80% Which? score in 2014 and was awarded a 'Best Buy': "When secured to the car via the Isofix base, the Simplicity provides excellent protection in a front impact crash and achieves a good four-star rating in our side impact crash tests, giving it an overall good four-star safety rating and a score of 80%.”
      A lot of people struggle with the Simplicity and stop using it long before their baby is too big for it. I made this video to help them get the most out of this seat, this video has nothing to do with the seats that you refer to in your second paragraph.

      Which magazine is rubbish it takes points off car seats for stuff like wrong colour which magazine cant be trusted, manufacturers like maxi cosi joie do much better than 40mph testing that's why there recommended not seats like this that are tested only to 30mph we drive 50/60 mph on most roads in the uk meaning this car seat wouldn't keep a child safe, if you know so much which I highly doubt you do looking at the seats you've done videos on you wouldn't promote these basic minimum tested seats, the seats I've mentioned above might not relate to this video but seems I know more than you do and I'm just a member of public doing my own research

      There are aspects of Which? Magazine's ratings that I don't agree with, and generally that is because they mark seats that are otherwise very safe, down for less important things. In the case of the Silver Cross Simplicity that did not happen. It passed their tests and wasn't marked down. Therefore it is a safe seat.
      You don't seem to realise that all our groups and pages are linked and run by the same people, and that it was me personally who removed you from Car Seat Advice UK and A-Z for being rude.

      that's your choice I'm not rude I'm just passionate about safety and rear facing if you cant see that then god help it, I've paid out £550 for car seats in the last few months to keep my toddler rear facing and safe, everything I've said or questioned is because I'm passionate I want to know and learn so if you want to stop me by removing me that's fine your choice

      @@lucywilkinson6045 stop being such a hater, just because you don't agree with her doesn't mean you know more than her. By the way you should take a look at the prices and sad excuses of car seats that we have in Brazil, the worst car seat in the UK is probably better than the best car seat from here
