Corny Keg Floating Dip Tube, Major Issue

  • Corny Keg Floating Dip Tube, Major Issue
    Using a recently purchased Fermzilla fermenter and starting the transfer of beer to my keg I noticed that the Kegland floating dip tube was going to hit the yeast cake and leave up to 2" (5cm)worth of beer behind which could easily been about 1 gallon (3.87 Liters) of wasted beer without pulling in a lot of yeast. The only solution to reducing this was to tip the all rounder around but with a room temp fermented yeast cake it wasn't real solid so this is problematic as it can easily disturb the yeast cake. The Torpedo keg buoy floating dip tube has this same major problem in design, in my opinion. I considered using my transfer pump to move the remaining beer but instead I swapped out the one from Kegland with a FLOTit. The FLOTit floating dip tube was able to help transfer all but about 1 ounce or a 1/8th of a cup of beer. Based on that I experience I will only be using FLOTit devices in my kegs and pressure fermenters from now on.
    Please keep in mind a lot of people sell the floating dip tubes on different websites that may not be produced by Kegland or Torpedo but appear to have the same issue. The issue requires you to play with it to capture as much of your beer as possible but there is a high chance of capturing some of your yeast unless you purchase Keglands new add-on filter which the filter does help a bit but the best is that it hits the yeast cake (trub) forcing the tip in a more upward direction.
    I can only imagine how many pints the Torpedo or Kegland's floating dip tubes might be leaving behind in a corny keg!

      @@kevinrogowski8335 You obviously are getting this, that is almost a full 2 inches below the surface of the beer and if there was trub in the container it would be sucking up a ton of it before getting the last of the beer, even with playing roll the all rounder around. Sometimes it is hard to show or explain to people set in their ways that there is a better way and a better product to do the job. Luckily most homebrewers love innovation and new ways to do things otherwise the craft beer industry wouldn't be where it is today.

      @@smalloy88 Yes, not on this one but on another batch right after this I was getting CO2 off and on close to the last bit of liquid. I'll be doing two (maybe three) more videos on this subject as several of the companies have made updates to fix issues and due to this video Trong was nice enough to send me (out of the blue) a FLOTit 2.0 which has a few major improvements and what is cool is part of the new system he says will also be purchasable for about $5 to add enhancements to any current floating dip tube from any company. Lots of cool improvements to the toys coming. Hi folks, viewing from Ireland love the channel, great advice. I've been using the kegland floating dip tube in my modified bucket fermenter and kegs. I ran into same trouble at start. I fixed my issues by adding a second stainless steel ring to dip tube ball float and cutting silicone tube so the end stops a couple of mm from bottom of keg, kegs now empty fully, so every last drop of precious beer except yeast is drank. Did same with the modified fermenter, added ball lock posts for closed transfer and added a filter to the end of floating diptube and have had no problems with beer left in fermenter or trub being transferred when kegging. I know you shouldn't have to do these things, but I think it's part of the home brewing magic, adapting and modifying. The flot it dip tube looks awesome, I'll definitely be getting some. Thanks for the link, advice and review.

      Welcome and Ireland is at the top of my bucket list so much love in return. I really just want to go to the Temple Bar and have a pint, just to say I was there (plus a few other cool places of course). 😀😀😀 - I appreciate you for sharing that info and I think I understand as I've seen a photo someone else referenced where it was tubesmall opening connecting to the floating balltube if I follow and of course the metal filter on the very beginning. (?) Correct? This way if the tubing hit the trub it didn't suck it up first but the liquid correct? Feel free to share a photo from Imgur as pictures are always helpful but not required. I did ask Tongo about shipping to AU for a friend and it was crazy cheap just probably not very fast. Sadly I won't get to Ireland until maybe 2 more years if I am lucky otherwise I'd just order a few and bring them with me for you.

    The critical thing is to trim the tube just right. You want the length such that it would hang free and pick up just below where you expect the top of the cake. This makes it easy to control pickup depth by angling the fermenter a little. Obviously this will work better with a cold crash, as the cake will be more stable, but that the difference isn't huge either way.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fully agree with the angling of the fermenter but as my trub was far from solid it was a bit of a pain (and I don't have anywhere to cold crash the all rounder as it is kind of big). I get what you are saying about the shortness of the hose but the trub does flocculate a bit based on the yeast and the OG and FG of the brew, sometimes significantly. My big point was that the FLOTit (although they recommend trimming the tube to) doesn't need any modifications to work amazingly well compared to a design that is going on 20 years from my research that doesn't appear to have ever had a patent issued as everyone copies it with very little changes if any.
      The new Kegland filter for the floating dip tube (which they are now throwing in on the Fermzilla complete setups deals (after I got mine)) actually helps fix theirs not so much with the filter but how the filter will hit the trub forcing the tub to level out and never hit the trub directly as compared to without it.

    I’ve used the kegland floating dip tube in the fermzilla and in my kegs for over 20 batches or so and have never had an issue with leaving beer behind. My liquid line does not sit 2 inches below the ball. I will say I always ferment 6 gallons of wort so that helps but in the keg it will settle to the bottom and it leaves no beer behind IME.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing

      Does it pull trub? I had someone tell me they had the opposite issue with the tubing sticking out of the liquid which I'm not sure how that happened but all I saw was the tubing was heading head first into the trub and the tube was a solid 2" below the surface.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The video is a bit old and that was the Kegland floating dip tube which I've mentioned in newer videos that Kegland was one of the only companies to admit there was an issue and address it with their plastic filter add-on as the design was invented by homebrewers almost 20 years ago and many companies have copied it without fixing the issues. I did a 4 part series on the Floating Diptubes by covering each type/brands in 3 separate videos and then the final head-to-head comparison in this video - th-cam.com/video/xd-ajnaEGd4/w-d-xo.html Although I don't regret the original video as it was done out of frustration I do regret being a little hostile as I was tired and in a lot of physical pain (due to heart issues) and I'm normally really easy going but when I'm in pain I'm serious grump. When you watch the video you will see almost all designs have their pros and cons. Plus some are really cheap and others are very expensive.
      What is funny is that I got a lot of flak for that video when it first came out but I later had 3 of the people who gave me flak come back and apologize, after realizing the original designed very flawed compared to other systems and improvements available. One was like "I never realized I had an issue until you pointed it out and now I can't stop seeing the problem with the design."

    I am one that bought the floating dip tube. I see your point. I have re jigged mine like this and it works much better. I took off the ring that connects the float to the stainless tube. I flared the little stainless tube to go over the ring on the float. Then I Locked it there by reinstalling the ring. Now it picks up the same as the float it. When it gets to the bottom it won’t get into the yeast cake. The hose needs to be adjusted to do this properly. I tried to send a picture but I could not.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your insight and as a homebrewer I think we are all use to a little DIY but it really shouldn't need that much of an adjustment. The design appears to have been created by some fellow homebrewers almost 20 years ago so I think it was time for something better and I'm just happy someone stepped forward with a better design. I brewed a DIPA today and used my FLOTit in the Fermzilla not just because I'm concerned for grabbing part of the yeast cake (even with rolling the fermenter around) but I went nuts on the hops so I'm a bit overly concerned as most went into the fermenter (1 full pound of Cascade as I had way too much of that stuff from deals). Thank you and please feel free to share a link to Imgur of your modification as I'm looking to either modify mine or make them Xmas ornaments.

    Just need to cut the Fermizilla float to the proper length that doesn't get hung-up along the side and then "slide the Fermzilla" down as you are emptying it. I have done so probably 15 times now and never had an issue.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed on the leaning part and everyone is saying cut the hose. I actually think in one of the normal Fermzillas with the tapered bottoms where it is a bit pointy it would be less problematic but I've seen a few modifications where people have had the tips hit their trub in kegs and pressure fermenters so they recommend actually putting a piece in-between the hose with an opening to ensure even if the hose hits the trub it will pull beer first. I also figured out that the entire design from what I was able to find was from a bunch of homebrewers on Homebrewtalk (not 100% it originated there but it is there) seemed to have created the prototype of what most companies sell today ...that was almost 20 years ago. I doubt any of them cashed in on the idea as they were just helping each other with a DIY design including a SS floating ball from Grainger. Kind of wild when you think about it.

Something I do all the time but this time, it was with a ton of Blackberry pulp which clogged a cheaper floating dip tube I was using. I swapped it out for one of my FLOTit 2.0 devices that I had recently purchased, and it worked like a charm. I'm slowly buying more to replace all of my current floating diptubes, so all of my kegs (16+) and pressure fermenters (3) have one each, with a few spares. The inventor gave me 2 for the video reviews, but I purchased all the others as I was simply impressed with the performance.

    The Flotit, unfortunately, is not available where I live ( NZ ). So to get around the design flaw in the Kegland floating dip tube I do two things. 1. Cut the tube shorter so that the float sits on the bottom ( dry ) but the tube sits just above above the yeast cake. 2. When transferring, as the float gets low, gently tilt the fermzilla so that the float and tube remains above the trub on the bottom. I think the FLOTit looks like the go if you can get it but there is a work around, maybe not perfect, but something I can live with without wasting a gallon usable beer.

      Actually I asked the seller as I was considering buy a few to ship to a friend in Australia and he said it should only cost me a couple bucks but would of course take a while to get there as it was going to be shipped super cheap which means super slow. A lot of people seem to make almost identical versions of the floating dip tube with the ball and I can say at least Kegland sees there are some issues so they recently came out with a filter which I've come to realize isn't as important as what it does to the dip tube beyond filtering. As the dip tube gets close to hitting the trub (normally it would be point slightly toward it the filter will actually lift it up a bit and the filer will hit the trub first keeping the tube from sucking in the trub as easily and allowing for more beer to be pulled first and as cleanly as possible. The gallon was a big of an exaggeration if you didn't tilt the all rounder to help people kind of see at what level it might hit the trub without modifications or assistance and of course I think anyone using this and the FLOTit will tilt the fermenter to get every drop of clean beer they can.

Literally the only thing you have to do to get it to work is as the wort line is getting close to the bottom, you simply SLOWLY start to tilt the allrounder so that the trub is moved away from the dip tube. The 2 inches you're showing in the picture actually works out perfectly when you tip the allrounder because then the dip tube is basically resting on the now bottom of the fermenter and you'll leave very very little wort in the fermenter. The way you came out just unabashedly dogging the kegland tube without knowing how it works is what really bothers me. The reason they make this tube a little longer is a manufacturing decision. If it's a little long, cut the damn thing, it takes less than 5 seconds. They produce them all the same length like that so they'll work in the larger All Rounder along with a corny keg if you so choose. This works out quite well in the keg because if you want to get every last drop out of the keg, you can because of how it hangs below the float. You can't continue to come on TH-cam and give such biased and untested reviews. If you're not going to use the product correctly yourself, you should be linking to other BrewTubers who have done an review showing the item being used properly so that the people who watch your channel can form an educated decision. That's my two cents. If I've offended you, my apologies, but this world has enough misinformation in it at the moment, and when I see if bleed over into my hobbies I get a bit testy.

      @@mattb6124 I fully understand your point of view and I probably shouldn't have been so grumpy as I am a very laid back person normally but I'm a very passionate person about things I enjoy like homebrewing. I was tired and was sitting their watching the tube heading for the trub and started to panic a bit and as the yeast cake (trub) wasn't rock solid I was concerned with moving the all rounder around too much disturbing the trub and I almost pulled out my transfer pump which is my standard go to for moving beer to keg but that is when I remembered I had the FLOTit devices and grabbed one of them as I had been really impressed with how well the first one did with a keg of beer.
      I understand linking or mentioning other Homebrew TH-cam channels but as I am an IT person that knows SEO really well I feel like that is cheating and using someone else's popularity to build on your own so I try to avoid it unless I am giving credit to someone who has done something or mentioned something before me as I feel that is more of a sign of respect that should be shown. I agree with Brian @ Short Circuited Brewers and you that I should have toned it down a bit but I was annoyed and irritated as Kegland does have a fix for this which is an add-on filter that actually causes the tube to point upward a bit as it hits the trub but I don't feel I should constantly be buying fixes for issues but they are far from the only homebrew company doing the fix an issue and sell you an add-on which I'm kind of tired of seeing as of late. Brian felt I was bashing the other vendors products which I probably was to some degree but I am one of those people that hopes the vendors actually hear the issues and address them in future releases. Kegland and Torpedo both makes some really nice and useful products and nothing is perfect as everything can be improved on but I just felt (in my opinion) that these in comparison to a man in his garage (a homebrewer from my understanding) making FLOTit fell really short in product development.

    I use a torpedo floating dip tube in a couple kegs, it pulls down to the same level as a regular dip tube without issue. If it's a better product at same or similar price then I'll have to check it out. If you stopped before you completed the transfer then you are only assuming it would leave that extra amount in the fermenter, maybe try filling with cleaner or sanitizer and compare how much gets left between the two options

    Hey, I wanted to circle back around because I had an idea for how to do a closed transfer w/ dip tube without having to open and hook out the filter. You can buy one of those corny keg lids with the gas diffuse stone on a tube. Take the diffuse stone off and let the tube hang down. Well, you essentially have a long dip tube third ball lock now. Just take the diffuser stone off.... let the tube hang down... and fill through that one.
    I was just thinking about this the other day but haven't got around to trying it. But, basically you could leave the whole system closed fill there and leave your Out alone and sealed up.
    What do you think? Might work right? Haha.

      Great minds think alike as I was just thinking of this for a few reasons. One what you mentioned about filling without pumping liquid through the drip tube with the filter and allowing for the regular blow-off of excess CO2 during filling. (Just did this Saturday and had to keep pulling the release valve). The other option would be to have one in with the cab stone while slowly bringing it up to pressure to help it carb faster without worrying about the floating dip tube.

      The tipping will help although my yeast cake wasn't as compact as many as it was a Saison yeast so any disturbance of the yeast cake would have disturbed the yeast a bit. Yes I would highly recommend the Fermzilla all rounder as I personally haven't used any others. I will eventually do a review but want to use it a bit longer first. I did order the fermentation jacket for it but it appears to be unavailable until sometime this spring but I do have it on order. I also ordered the chiller coil but to use it, it requires a lot of drilling so I will probably just order a 2nd lid so I have the option for when I do and don't want to use the chiller. I will say to open the lid either use a leather belt, a bike innertube, or grab the big version of a rubber strap adjustable wrench like this amzn.to/2PAJ0Un the big one barely works but it does. Morebeer had an OK deal on a complete kit which is where I grabbed mine and I was just disappointed with the floating dip tube included which I just realized as I'm looking at the deal it was supposed to come with the filter but I never got that in my kit. If you get the deal and it comes with the filter you will have a lot better performance as the filter actually pushed the dib tube up a bit as the filter will hit the trub before the tube does helping to prevent pulling trub into your tube which makes it a much better system with that one minor enhancement.

    I think this is some great info as I was about to buy a bunch of these. However, isn't the "severity" of the issue largely due to using the floating dip tube in a fermenter rather than a keg? Losing a gallon is mainly due to the radius of your object. The designers of the floating tube intended it to be used with a smaller radius. I don't off the top of my head know what the inner diameter of a keg is but Wikipedia suggests the entire thing has a diameter of 8.5." If we take the worst case scenario (ignore wall thickness) and assume we still float 2" off the yeast-cake in a keg we would only lose .5 gallon of beer. π*4.25^2*2 ≈ 113.49 cubic inches. 113.5 cubic inches ≈ 0.49 gallons.
    I guess it comes down to if you are okay with leaving beer behind to avoid any chance of picking up sediment. For me I think having the last pint maybe pull some sediment is worth getting that extra half a gallon of beer in my belly.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and No. The floating dip tube from my understanding was designed for kegs but Kegland is using them in their Fermzilla fermenter which is a great idea for transferring the liquid without opening the fermenter but the dip tube could have been design better and at minimum it shouldn't hang so low without needing to be modified after the fact.
