    There is another option in the UK, it's called the Cask Widge. It's used for commercially dispensing cask beer but for homebrew corny keg purposes the floating head part fits directly to the correct size silicone tube which, as with the other floating dip tubes, connects to a short dip tube. The Cask Widge has a built in filter and is weighted with small ball bearings. I've used them successfully for some time without issue.
    The SPUNDit 2.0 looks like a great bit of kit, been thinking of getting one since I watched Dr Hans' review of it.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the support. - I bought the SPUNDit 2.0 the night I saw it on Dr Hans' review. The Cask Widge is crazy fancy but I see it appears to be originally designed for commercial usage.

      @@BitterRealityBrewing I'm not sure why CaskWidge floats being designed for commercial use makes them any less useful for home brew use. I've been using them in my home-brew kegs and FVs for several years. They work great and cost about 75% less than a Flotit 2 in the UK. A no-brainer really.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing

      @@johnmcmullan9741 John, Although this was about a year ago, I didn't realize when Mark (above comment) mentioned "Cask Widge" it was referring to "Cask Widge Float". I just did a bit of research, and it looks pretty cool, but we don't have those in the U.S. that I've seen. Plus, sadly, in many countries, items that might be cheap in one country are much more expensive in another. I do know that Thong (the inventor of the FLOATit 2.0) sells on eBay and on Amazon, and he has mentioned cheap shipping to other countries. With that said, I've also seen resellers of many products from the U.S. in European (and other locations) websites for 2 to 4 times what we pay here in the U.S. and items from AU shipped to U.S. being around 2 to 3 times what they sell for in AU. I wasn't knocking the CaskWidge Float, I just didn't have one to compare. I just watched DrHans video on it, and it does look very useful and straight forward. - th-cam.com/video/68_Go41TrVU/w-d-xo.html

    I'm sold on the FLOTit 2.0s.... I'll get one to try, but will probably end up with several. Another idea for pressure transferring to a keg while keeping a floating dip tube intact would be to use a corny keg carbonation lid with the stone taken off the end of the tube. I haven't tried it, so it's just a theory at this point. And of course, I'd love to try a SPUNDit 2.0 with my Spike CF 10 Conical.

    I'm currently using a homemade blowtie setup attached to a baby bottle. Haha. It's janky as all hell but it works.
    For transferring, you can just put a spare dip tube into the gas side and attach the hose to that. No need to pull the prv. The gas will vent from around the loose dip tube.

    Here's a question I've never seen asked: Why not have a gas-in port with a full length stainless tube? Or even a floating tube? No need for a filter. Pressure fill your beer thru the gas in port. Once full, hook up the CO2. Leave the liquid out port as-is with a float and filter. I welcome your opinion and thoughts. Thanks for this side-by-side. Fantastic video, thanks for taking the time to share it with us. I love that Spundit 2.0 btw. I recently built my first spundit. His looks like a nice piece of kit.

    • @trongdnguyen
      @trongdnguyen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is exactly how I normally do it - with a long dip tube. I also open up the safety relief valve during filling for venting purposes. You can also fill with the gas disconnect if you don't want the change out the post. All you have to do is to rinse out the gas disconnect and reconnect the safety valve afterward.

    • @CascadesHomebrew
      @CascadesHomebrew 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think a full length tube on the gas would mean CO2 bubbles constantly stirring up the stuff settled on the bottom. Having a simple floating dip tube (no filter) on the gas post does seem like a solid idea! In my view, any solution that involves removing the lid is defeating half of the reason for doing a closed transfer into a fully purged keg.

    • @trongdnguyen
      @trongdnguyen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CascadesHomebrew The problem of having a floating dip tube on the gas post to fill is how to let gas out through the gas post after that. Unless you will only let gas out via the safety valve. Filling with a long dip tube temporarily installed in the gas post is no difference from filling through liquid post without filter. You don't have to remove the keg lid to do this.

    • @PikeyScott
      @PikeyScott 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@trongdnguyen I think I'll try this the next time I fill a keg. I'll use a floating tube without filter and simply release gas via the safety valve. I'm pressure fermenting a lager right now and will probably try this when it comes time to keg. Hope it works out ok...

    • @trongdnguyen
      @trongdnguyen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I mentioned in the other comment I was impressed and use it regularly (it's in one my my new Irish Red Rye Ale kegs at the moment). It actually out performed what I was expecting based on size and where the opening was located. The FLOTit devices are also made in the U.S.. If you are only using these in kegs and can afford $50 a keg (I usually have 7 kegs going and am eventually looking to go to 15 total - $50 can add up very fast.). What is funny is that I probably she redo the tests with a ton of Blackberry pulp which I had to deal with recently in my Blackberry Lime Gose. I feel only the FLOTit 2.0 and the CBDS would have been able handle it as weight played a big factor in the transfer and I had to switch to the FLOTit 2.0 from a FLOTit 1.0 as it was too light in weight. I use almost all the floating dip tubes in this review very regularly as I usually have 7 kegs and 2 pressure fermenters going most of the time which is 9 floating dip tubes and I think I own 12 total. I don't usually use the Keg Land or Torpedo ones as the light weight seems to play an issue from time to time plus I must have a filter as I've learned that hard way about the need for a good filter.

    1. You’re right, FLOTit 2.0 is the absolute best floating diptube on the market. Hands down.
    2. I disagree with you on the best way to fill a keg with a floating diptube. I had the same conundrum. Here’s what I came up with: use one FLOTit 2.0 in your keg, and one in your fermenter. Close transfer the beer into the keg. Because it is being filtered on the fermenter side nothing is getting inside of the DFI in the keg. And no need to open the keg lid until the beer is done!
    I love this system and currently have 6 FLOTit 2.0s - one in each one of my 4 kegs, one in my All Rounder, and one in my Speidel 30L fermenter.
    Also thanks for the SPUNDit 2.0 giveaway! I absolutely love mine - who wouldn’t want a second one!?

      Thanks for the support on #1 and in #2 you make a GREAT point as I do filter inbound and never really thought about it when we had the debate on the best way to fill a keg once the info about possibly clogging the filter with inbound beer was presented. You are very right though if the beer in bound is pre-filtered there shouldn't be an change of clogging the filter on the other end. Thanks as we all have a habit of over thinking things from time to time and you are right it really isn't that complex.

    • @platinumrespect
      @platinumrespect 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BitterRealityBrewing trust me, I overthought it for a while too but it all seemed to make sense when I thought about this method for a little. The only thing I would say is to keep the transfer slow as you don’t want to knock the DFI off the tube in the keg. That’s not to say you can’t fill at a reasonable speed, I just wouldn’t fill super fast.

  • @kinggorf
    @kinggorf ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use the CBDS in my kegs as its a bit more rubust and less likely to clog when transfering in via a closes transfer because it has a no screen option. However it is too bulky for a fermzilla or similar fermenter

    I’m sure these systems are day and night difference compared to the old school floating dip tube but with inline filtering during kegging im left with minimal trube. Definitely would like to try a pressurized fermentation with that Spundit 2.0 though!

    Thanks for the video. I have a question for you. I have a Kegland keg and I'm planning to ferment and serve from the same vessel. I have just bought their spunding kit and their floating dip tube (with filter & ball float).
    Should the silicone tube remain its original length or will it require shortening?
    How would you set up tube length with respect to A) ferment & serve , all-in-one, and B) ferment and transfer to another keg, please?
    Thanks

    I'm not sure what you mean by "still working". I'm seeing stationary air bubbles in those lines and no water movement. Anyhow, it was a great series of videos on a topic that is well worth exploring. My only remaining question is how soon can I expect delivery on my shiny new SPUNDit 2.0?
    ;-)

    • @BitterRealityBrewing

      "still working" in regards to when I did the pull and at the current water level. The bubbles were primarily from when I would blow air through them and then re-pull the water again to verify it wasn't simply primed. I learned a bit more than I had expected from the experiment which I always enjoy learning especially when I get unexpected results as I did in this test.

    Spundit 2.0 is an awesome
    spunding valve. I have the flotit 1.0 and I like the price point but I don't like the over molded beer line tube...it closes off with too much torque. Don't like loosening my connections and risking a leak. My clear beer standard dip tube works better...higher price.

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the support and sorry to hear you had an issue but happy to see one works well for you. I haven't had any major issues with any I've tested but I'm always testing. My only real issue is that I've had a few hang on the edge of the dry hop bags but not hard to correct before moving the beer.

    • @scottnydam9938
      @scottnydam9938 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think flotit has some good design changes just don't think the overmold beer tube is needed. Rather have it with a standard short standard tube.

    How does the SPUNDit 2.0 behave when you have extreme Fermentation? My kegland Valve once had some overflow, but luckily it did not overpressure... easy to clean afterwards. In that same Fermentation, the Floating Ball with the filter really got cloaked, but after shaking the fermenter I was still able to pour clear beer. I wonder how the FLOTit 2.0 works in that Situation 😀

    • @trongdnguyen
      @trongdnguyen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      SPUNDit can be taken apart and clean. The pressure gauge is compatible with gas, water and oil. FLOTit 2.0 has double filter inlet and as long as only small gravity samplings are taken during active fermentation and post cold-crashing is done, there should not be any issues and you will get NO BEER LEFT BEHIND! In the events, that filters are clogged up externally (by outflowing), they can be back washed by gently injecting CO2 through the liquid post and then let the disturbed beer settled (cold-crashed some more), it will work again. You can check on SPUNDit feedbacks on eBay for fun. ebay.us/mgkxUS or read a recent review by HomebrewFinds.com here: www.homebrewfinds.com/2021/09/hands-on-review-spundit-spunding-valve.html

    • @BitterRealityBrewing
      @BitterRealityBrewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question and I'll give Trong the inventor a chance to reply but I would think if you had the pressure set early on and enough head space you should be fine. If you are doing 5 gallons in a 5 gallon keg then you would have issues no matter what. Also for any filter on a floating dip tube, try doing a bust of C02 on the liquid line before starting if it seems clogged. I do this as almost every time just to play it safe.

    Are they just used to stop yeast from the bottom of the keg or would these be able to filter suspended yeast and hops? SPUNDit 2.0

    • @trongdnguyen
      @trongdnguyen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With 300/500 micron mesh of relatively small surface areas, they can filter small amount of suspended particulates mainly for taking gravity samplings during fermentation and for getting the last bit of cold-crashed beer near the end to have NO BEER LEFT HEHIND!
