How To Crate Train A Puppy | How I Crate Trained My Samoyed Puppy

  • How to crate train my puppy, is something Yeti the Samoyed and I hear often. You must learn how to crate train a puppy, to have an easier time with potty training, establish sound sleeping habits for both you and your puppy and to give your puppy a safe place to be, especially while vacuuming, or during fireworks.
    If you have guests over, or if Quimby and Bigby (Yeti's best dog friends) come over and are playing a bit too rough, a crate can provide calming quiet.
    Quimby and Bigby were over, spending time with Yeti. They had been wrestling around, were very loud, moving furniture, so it was a good time for a time out. Yeti went into his crate and he wasn't too happy about having to leave the party for a few minutes. He just wanted to keep playing.

    Yeti was crate trained when he was a little, brand new puppy. It made potty training much easier and helped keep him from eating things he wasn't supposed to. Be sure to comment below, because Yeti really likes to hear your comments.

      I noticed you didn't have any bedding in the crate...is that for a reason?
      As crates bottoms are very cold and hard.

      We had a dog bed in the crate when we first got Yeti. He shredded the dog bed immediately, because it made him too warm. So, we put a cute little puppy blanket in there. That too, shredded immediately. No more beds nor blankets in the crate. Yeti actually prefers laying on cold, hard surfaces. He scoots our area rugs out of the way so he can lay on our cold tile by our backdoor, with the draft coming in under the door. Some dogs prefer comfy surfaces. Other dogs shred them and prefer laying on cold, hard surfaces. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Thank you, Animal Facts! In the thumbnail pic, he had been crazy with Quimby and Bigby and needed a time out. He really wanted to continue moving furniture, barking out of glee and his Mom had a headache (caused by all the commotion). A few minutes of a quiet helped calm the three dogs down. A serenity now moment.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeti did that too for quite a few times. Get your dog used to being in the crate, during the day, without closing the gate. Lure them in using treats. Praise when they’re in. Then, let them come out. Practice that a few times. If your pup still takes the bed out with him, remove the bed. He might try to chew it while he’s little. Once he’s used to the crate, then you can bring the bed back.

      Yeti does love his belly rubs! I have found some people who don’t understand how beneficial crate training is in training a puppy. In the beginning of the video, I discuss the reasons why it’s a good idea and how dogs like small spaces.

      Thanks, Chris! We would’ve shown how to do it, but our crate was in our basement (we haven’t had to use it in awhile) and was rusted by recent basement flooding. Crate training helps with potty control, prevents house eating and keeps them safe.

    Thank you for the video. I just got 9 month old Blanco. He is pretty tame and gets along so well with our 2 jack Russels. He doesn’t have potty accidents at night but when we are away from work during the day he is destructive and goes potty in the house. I’m getting him a crate tomorrow and I wonder if crate training is any different for older pups. Any other advice is welcome too! I’ll make sure to watch all your videos ❤

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crate training is the same, regardless of age. Blanco could have separation anxiety and/or could need more daily exercise before you leave and when you come home. Exercise helps calm them.

    • @YetisPlace

      Blanco is also in his velociraptor teenage state. This will last until around 2 years old. But, multiple daily exercise events will help. Fetch, long walks.

    Can’t seem to get my Samoyed puppy to not bark in the crate. But we’ve tried everything

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      During the day, when it’s not time for him to be in the crate, I encourage you to use a super enticing treat. Lure one of his front paws in. Give the treat, tell him/her good boy/girl. Repeat a few times.
      Next, try 2 paws in. Repeat the above.
      Next, lure them in a bit further. Repeat the above.
      Finally, lure them all the way in a few times, leaving the crate door open. Repeat the above.
      Encourage your dog to hang out in their crate during the day, while you’re home. Leave the door open. Put a hard toy in there, like a Kong toy, filled with some good dog-safe soft treats.
      You’ll need to practice this over a few days. Once they realize their crate is a safe place, they will feel more comfortable being in it.

    I've been crate training my 3 month old since we got him at 8 weeks and following your steps, but he stiiillll can't tolerate being in there alone 🙈
    Do you have any advice for making things easier for both of us, and whether or not it will ever get better?🙏

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m sorry to hear of your troubles. When you feed him, feed him by hand, by his crate. Leaving his crate door open, move your hand, with his food, into the crate. Get him to place his head inside. Continue hand feeding, moving your arm inside his crate, to get his full body inside. Leave the crate door open, while you finish feeding him. But, only give him his food, while he’s inside his crate.
      To address his being afraid while alone, for overnight, bring his crate into your bedroom, with you. He wants to be with his family.
      Play some mental stimulation games with him (hide and seek, dog puzzle block games, find and bring my a toy, etc) to tire him out mentally. Bring him on a longer walk, before he goes into his crate. He’ll be more tired and will more easily go inside.
      Once a Sammy reaches 4 months of age, to 2 years, they become velociraptors, so it’s important they learn their crate will keep them safe from eating things that are dangerous (electrical cords, outlets, shoes, socks, etc). They start teething around that age too.

  • @ardalan_m

    Hi! I appreciate your informative video. I have a question regarding crate and potty training. Should we confine the puppy to the crate during the day once they have become comfortable with it, and only take them out for walks, scheduled potty breaks, and playtime in the morning and evening? I have a 17-week-old puppy who has no issues sleeping in the crate at night, but during the day, he resists going into the crate and tends to have accidents despite my efforts to keep an eye on him and recognize when he needs to relieve himself. I am uncertain about the proper way to approach these training methods.
    Thank you

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only put him in the crate when you’re not there to watch. For example, overnight and while you’re working, unable to focus on him.
      As far as the accidents, keep a close eye on him. The second he’s let out of his crate, he goes outside. The moment after he finishes eating, or drinking water, outside. Use a lot of praise when he goes potty. Make sure he goes potty twice before bringing inside. Puppies and dogs do 2 potties. The first one doesn’t empty their whole bladder. The second one does.
      Set a timer during the day for every hour and a half. Bring him outside when the timer goes off, whether or not he needs to go potty. Encourage him to potty. You can increase the amount of time 15 minutes as each week passes.
      It can often take a few months to fully potty train a puppy, so please be patient. My tips will help make it less stressful for both of you.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The moment they stop playing with whatever they’re playing with, the moment they stop eating and drinking, is the moment you bring them outside to relieve themselves not once, but twice.

    do i have to crate train or can i just put my dog in my room and close the door at night? but one of the reasons i think is good to do this so they wont do naughty things at night right? Because i really cant resist those puppy eyes so yeah

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to keep your dog out of trouble, prevent them from chewing electrical cords, getting themselves into danger, then you need to crate train. It takes awhile to potty train a Sam, so having them in a crate helps when you’re unable to watch over them. They learn that a crate is a place for safety and they’ll feel comfortable in it.

    • @YetisPlace

      They can move playpens around and drag them through the kitchen, or wherever you have them. Crates, are more sturdy, a bit trickier for them to break free.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Fatemeh Shahani! Glad to hear we’re helpful to you. I would not leave your puppy out of the crate for overnight. Puppies get into all types of things, so it’s best to keep them in their crate. I would bring the crate into your bedroom for overnight and leave the playpen for your puppy to be in while in another room of your home (during the day). If your bedroom is too warm for your puppy (mine was for Yeti), you could move the crate to another room for overnight.
