Siouxsie and the Banshees are definitely a rabbit hole worthy of exploring! I love their songs "Peek a Boo", "Kiss them for Me" and "Christine" - to name a few. ❣
I can remember this song being a big hit in something that I don’t think really exists anymore, at least not the way it did back in the 80s - the dance clubs that played this type of dance music - post punk, gothy, industrial, EBM, etc. That was a fun time to be a teenager and young adult exploring night life with your friends.
I went to 'alternative' clubs from 88-92 and I feel very fortunate to have experienced them. In the SF Bay Area the music was very varied. You would hear White Lines, Voyage Voyage, Dig It and even early U2 songs like New Year's Day. When the goth scene broke off of it I think something was lost. It became very cliquish.
They have kinda been priced out of the market. All the cities where you'd get goth and industrial nights have "gentrified" and so people can't afford to host these nights. Even more so after the lockdowns.
Oh HELL YEAH! Thank you for reacting to this one, and thank you to whoever recommended it. Siouxsie and the Banshees was one of my first "favorite bands". Their origin and history is so fascinating -- and of course so is their music and Siouxie herself. Also, it's amazing how Amber NAILED it yet again on the meaning. Fanstastic.
YAY! More Siouxsie! This makes the little post punk, gothy teen girl in me happy (as happy as a post punk gothy teen girl can be). Some other songs to check out include "Israel", "Halloween", "Night Shift", "Slowdive", "Switch", "Hong Kong Garden", "Icon", "Peek A Boo", "Face to Face", "Candyman", "Arabian Nights" & "Happy House", as well as their cover of The Beatles' song "Dear Prudence".
I used to go out dancing pretty frequently and this song was a floor filler every time. Siouxsie and the Banshees, and her later band The Creatures, are amazing live.
I love Siouxsie & the Banshees. I saw them at the first Lollapalooza and honestly based on their music didn't think they'd be a good live band, but that was one of the most intense performances I've ever seen. They rock.
"Kiss Them For Me" probably has the broadest appeal of their songs. It also demonstrates the softer side of Siouxie's vocal range without as much angst.
They did an entire LP of covers which included Iggy Pop's The Passenger and Dear Prudence. Like the Stranglers they started out punk and turned into art rock without abandoning their roots. Souxise's persona made her Queen of the Goths too.
Another vocalist in this style is Bjork. Check out "Birthday" from her days with The Sugarcubes... where she really pulls out all her keening tricks. It's epic. She's epic. And thanks for "Cities in Dust"... love this when I'm in a dark jazzy mood.
The sheer depth and breadth of incredible music to come from the UK, particularly in about the 40 year period starting from 1962, is just... well, incredible.
"Cities in dust" has to figure in the top 10 - 20 from the 80's alternative scene. Melodically, I just love Siouxsie's rendition of Iggy Pop's "The passenger". Another good suggestion would be "Slowdive"... Enjoy!
My favourite song of theirs is Hong Kong Garden and when they appeared with this song back in the day, with their video, it was quite revolutionary because she was like nothing that had been seen before, amazing stage presence.
God I miss the eighties. The highs I used to get when I heard a rumour of a new song coming out from my fave bands, and then I'd hear something like this and I'd flip my lid. Doesn't happen much these days. Fantastic choice people. Cheers, Paul.😁📀👍❤️
Amber's ability to recognize references is slick. I love dancing to this when it comes on the dancefloor. Jay's love of the drums- always there with you, on beat. I wonder how a Bjork trajectory for you two might go? Fingers crossed. XOXO.
Oh! My! Gawd! I feel like Hell has officially frozen over. Never thought you'd do Siouxsie again after Jay's not so enthused reaction to Spellbound. Amber hit the nail on the head with this being about Pompeii. Who'd a thunk Siouxsie would be such an excellent history teacher? 🥰
First Peter Murphy now Siouxsie. One of my favorite bands ever. And you were right on the Pompeii thing! This is the most common signature song of theirs so I do get sick of hearing it at 80s clubs because the rest of the catalogue gets neglected. But it is a wonderful song and i can remember loving it intensely when I first heard it. You must react to more of them. I recommend some live televisions appearances as well.
FINALLY! Okay, had to get that done first... One of my top 5 bands for sure - loved them when I found them in '87, and loved them more each decade since! Try The Killing Jar, 92°, Face to Face (from the scene Batman dances with Catwoman and both realize who they are), Happy House (Ms Ortega was listening to this while they filmed the Wednesday Dance scene), Hong Kong Garden, or ... really, it's all good. I can't think of a song I don't like...
Glad you guys are doing more Souxie. She is kind of known as the godmother of goth. Back before it was called goth . We just called it dark rock. Other really good songs you would like. Peekaboo , The passenger from iggy pop , face to face, kiss them for me, and she does a cover of dear prudence from the Beatles. She even did an amazing cover of "trust in me" the snake song from the jungle book.
The other single from the same album "Candyman" is also worth a listen. But Siouxsie had so many great ones. "Peek-a-Boo", "Happy House", "Israel", "Dear Prudence", "The Passenger", "This Wheel's On Fire", "Song from the Edge of the World", "The Last Beat of My Heart", "Melt", "Cascade", "Christine", "Red Light"... I have to stop before I recommend every single song they made... haha One thing is for sure, they made very few bad songs, you can review almost any song by them and I guarantee that you'll like it.
Lovely reaction. Thank you for giving Siouxsie and the Banshees some well deserved love. Try Murdering Mouth with Siouxsie (and The Creatures) and John Cale (Velvet Underground). For some more yodeling, there's Nina Hagen Band and Lena Lovich. For Extra credit, you should check out The Slits.
She always had a great voice. Good post-punk/Goth band. Siouxsee and the Banshees. React to their "Hong Kong Garden", "Christine", "Candyman", "Dazzle" next. . Yall should check out Yeah Yeah Yeahs! They are a modern band that was inspired from this band and genre. Songs like "Maps" and "Y Control".
For me, I see some similarities among the Velvet Underground & Nico, Siouxsie and The Banshees, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Love listening to full albums every now and then.
That was the end of my Rock days the around 1980 the New Wave era. Siouxsie and the Banshees, Motels, Suburban Lawns, Plimsouls. X. Blondie, it was a great time. That was the end of Rock for me and the move to Jazz and Fusion. Stay well you two!!!!!
Been dying for someone to react to this one. You win!! You get to hear it for the first time!! And Amber totally nails it with the point about Pompeii!! Never occurred to me before! Great analysis, kiddo, kudos, killing it! Cool indeed. 😎 Love it. Thanks, RSR fam. 😊❤
This is me at the goth clubs 25 years ago, dancing in clothes I wouldn’t let my son DARE see me in now. 😝 (not that I could fit into them now anyway 🤣)
Keep exploring this band! You will never get bored. Check out their 1st single from 1978, "Hong Kong Garden"! You won't stop moving! The beat is infectious and the riffs at the end will not leave you disappointed!
In a similar but different vein (and a good candidate for Female Friday) you could try Toyah. Her early 80s hits include "Thunder in the Mountains", "I Want to be Free", "It's a Mystery" and "Rebel Run", but if you're enjoying Siouxsie's voice some of Toyah's less well-known tracks are also worth a listen (e.g. "Ieya", "Danced", "Jungles of Jupiter").
Juju is the masterpeice that launched a thousand Goth rock bands. By the release of this they'd developed a unique and wonderful soundscape that still sounds fresh. x
Another very artistic female singer is Bjork. Check her out in her band The Sugarcubes in songs like “Birthday”, “Cold Sweat”, “Hit”, “Motorcrash”. Also check out her solo material in “Army Of Me”, “Human Behavior”, “Venus As A Boy” and “Big Time Sensuality” just to name a few.
Cocteau Twins singer is another one who can take you on a vocal roller coaster ride. Siouxie - Kiss Them For Me Siouxie - Hong Kong Garden Cocteau Twins - Cherry Colored Funk Cocteau Twins - Lorelei Massive Attack - Teardrop
If you do another day of covers, you should check out the Beatles' original "Dear Prudence", then try Siouxsie's cover of it. I actually like the Banshee's version better! "Peekaboo" is amazing and one I'm sure you'd love. "Christine", "Face To Face", "Slowdive", and they did a cover of "Trust In Me" from the Jungle Book that is absolutely mesmerizing. They are one of my favorite, favorite bands since 1984! They had a big hit in the early 90s with "Kiss Them For Me" and it's quite different from their earlier material, but still so wonderful.
Great catch, Amber -- Pompeii -- not may songs about Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius. Sioxusie and the Banshees have a lots of great songs. Peek-A-Boo is a great one. Also love The Killing Jar, Dazzle, Kiss Them For Me, Slow Dive... so many more.
The memories❤ Best friend and I waited for this album (Tinderbox) to hit stores and split the cost. That poor tape didn’t last the summer before the it snapped. More please!!
I just recently found out that Garbage covered this only last year, and its phenomenal! Think, Depeche Mode, w/a little NIN thrown in, but w/Shirley Manson singing.
i know! i got em' too. i saw you talk about the allergies last nite in your 'carrie' video. this new ASTROPRO spray is great from wal mart & then claritin D behind the pharmacy--this clears it up for me.
Thank you so much! Another great music video by them is “Fireworks” or my personal favorite: “Swimming Horses”. I’ll check it out whenever you listen to SATB! ❤
I also love the mysterious Cannons song- it about a time in Paris where they were in a drought, it was believed that firing cannons into the clouds would create rain.
AMBER: Don't you know that it's MEN, who supposedly spend every day thinking about ancient Rome? Yet, here you are brushing up on Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius. Next time you hear a fiddle you're going to tell us who fiddled while Rome burned ;)
One of her weirdest or creepiest sounding songs was 'The Staircase Mystery' from the late 70s. Much more rocky or punky than Cities In Dust. If you like this you might like 'In between Days' or 'A Forest' by The Cure.
Thank you for reacting to more Susie I have loved this woman and her band since I first discovered them 2:272:27 April 1980 a few months before my 17th birthday just to let you know you have a huge rabbit hole ahead of you I would suggest the Sea of light, last Beat of My Heart , face to face which was featured in the 1992 Batman Returns movie
Amber, you’re a lyrics person and I appreciate that! I’m happy to have basic lyrics in, say, a funk song because the repetition is part of what makes it great dance. But for me any kind of indie/goth music has to have great lyrics. 🖤
Jay, a netti pot or a sinus rinse really helps me during allergy season. I do a sinus rinse at night a few of times a week during pollen season & I usually don’t have to do it the rest of the year
Ummm… ITS ABOUT TIME! She IS the QUEEN of Punk! She went quite mainstream towards the beginning of the 90s in the U.S. especially with, “Peek-A-Boo”…. I have every single album and every single song they have ever made in my music library!
Blown away that you got here. I love 80's music. Who thinks to sing the lines in this manner? You never knew what you would get, but you knew it would be creative.
An absolute classic, the Eruption Extended Mix of the song is especially great. I do agree that Siouxsie's vocals are very dark and fit the song's theme perfectly but I also recommend checking out Garbage's cover of the song. Shirley Manson's take on the singing style sounds dark and the instrumentation captures that eerie tone but adds in some haunting dystopian/post-apocalyptic vibe to it as well.
So many great avant garde songs and videos, but also I also love "Kiss Them For Me", a shameless dance-pop ode to Jayne Mansfield, which was their most commercially successful U.S. single.
great reaction. I was massively into siouxsie and the banshees when i was younger. there's some amazing songs for you to still find from these. on the side siouxsie and birdie doing right now was kinda cool at the time too!
Gotta check out "PEEK-A-BOO" by Siouxsie and the Banshees - that song was my introduction to them and have been a fan ever since!! Please get back to some ADAM ANT (Goody Two Shoes, Desperate But Not Serious, Cajun Twisters, Friend or Foe, etc, etc!). Also, TORI AMOS and FIONA APPLE!! Thank you for the consideration and keep smiling (and feeling better) y'all!!
Siouxsie And The Banshees have long since been one of my favorite bands, they are amazing! So many great songs from them. I really hope you'll keep listening to more. Some of my favorites: Arabian Knights, Christine, Peek A Boo, Kiss Them For Me, Face To Face, Sick Child, The Passenger, Last Beat Of My Heart, Fireworks, Melt, Painted Bird, Dazzle, Switch, Happy House, The Sweetest Chill, Burn Up, Gun, Sin In My Heart, Hybrid, Lands End ... and so many more amazing songs. Amber you are correct in the theme of the song. I'm so glad you both are enjoying SATB.
You are going down a great trip, try hearing a Few more from the “The Cure”, maybe Fascination Street, Letter to Elise, Disintegration, Closedown… so many good ones…
I have a good friend, originally from the UK, who lives in New Zealand now. He was the road manager for Siouxie Sioux and the Banshees in the early 80's.
If you like Siouxsie Sioux's voice, you'll love Elizabeth Frasier's voice. She sang with the Cocteau Twins but also had a few songs with This Mortal Coil and one with Massive Attack. I'd start with her Cocteau Twins work, which varies from dark in their early years (early eighties) to ethereal in their later years. The first time I heard the Cocteau Twins back in 1983, I said, "They sound the way Siouxsie and the Banshees ought to sound," like they had achieved a sound I thought Siouxsie and the Banshees were going for.
WHOA. This is my absolute favorite song by Siouxsie and the Banshees! When my friends and I visited Pomeii's excavated ruins, this song played in my head almost the whole time I was there. I strongly recommend a trip to Pompeii if you can swing it. I also recommend more songs from my Goth Queen; "Kiss Them For Me", "Dazzle" (another fave of mine), "Face to Face" (from the 'Batman Returns' film) and "Dear Prudence", their cover of The Beatles song. Peace! 🕊
For your sinuses that Navage thing really works; I've had one for a couple of years and it makes a really big difference, especially when trying to go to sleep.
My fav Siouxie and the Banshees song is actually a cover--the Passenger. Siouxie Sioux got her start as a groupie of the Sex Pistols in the late 70s. Jay--where I live, Viks Vapo Rub is the cure for EVERYTHING.
Siouxsie and the Banshees are definitely a rabbit hole worthy of exploring! I love their songs "Peek a Boo", "Kiss them for Me" and "Christine" - to name a few. ❣
My favorite is Christine!

There's a 12 inch cut of this out there somewhere... meaning an extended mix that takes up one side of a 12 inch record.

Went to clubs in the 80s , everybody danced to this.
"Kiss Them For Me" probably has the broadest appeal of their songs. It also demonstrates the softer side of Siouxie's vocal range without as much angst.
Very true!
They did an entire LP of covers which included Iggy Pop's The Passenger and Dear Prudence. Like the Stranglers they started out punk and turned into art rock without abandoning their roots. Souxise's persona made her Queen of the Goths too.

AH one of the original British punk bands.
I wish I could show you guys what it looked like when this song was playing in the club The dancefloor was wild!! LOL!! Great times!!
Israel is my favorite song by Siouxsie, and Happy House is a close 2nd. I think you would enjoy both! Glad you are both feeling better!
Israel is my absolute favorite as well!
This song is also featured in the movie “Grosse Pointe Blank”, great pick for y’all on your movie channel!😎
I was massively into siouxsie and the banshees when i was younger. there's some amazing songs for you to still find from these. on the side siouxsie and birdie doing right now was kinda cool at the time too!
have to add, was really kinda cool how quickly Amber got the story! nice one.
Their cover of the beatles song "dear prudence" is brilliant.
My very favorite song from
Siouxsie and The Banshees, is "Dazzle".
Such a beautiful song. Please add
it to your list. I suspect you'll like it.
Brilliant suggestion.
Peekaboo, Swimming Horses, Fireworks, Killing Jar, Dear Prudence, Overground, Spellbound... are all great songs by them.
I love Peek-A-Boo and Dear Prudence, also Kiss Them For Me❤
@@susan8750 Yeah, and they also do a good job with Iggy Pop's "The Passenger"
Gotta check out "PEEK-A-BOO" by Siouxsie and the Banshees - that song was my introduction to them and have been a fan ever since!! Please get back to some ADAM ANT (Goody Two Shoes, Desperate But Not Serious, Cajun Twisters, Friend or Foe, etc, etc!). Also, TORI AMOS and FIONA APPLE!! Thank you for the consideration and keep smiling (and feeling better) y'all!!
Epic Siouxsie! My favorite Siouxsie and the Banshees song.
So happy to see Siouxsie on this channel again.
You are going down a great trip, try hearing a
Few more from the “The Cure”, maybe Fascination Street, Letter to Elise, Disintegration, Closedown… so many good ones…
I have a good friend, originally from the UK, who lives in New Zealand now. He was the road manager for Siouxie Sioux and the Banshees in the early 80's.
Just 3 not-so-simple words: "Ornaments of Gold". MUST LISTEN!!
"Heaven or Las Vegas"
Peace! 🕊
Oh My Goth, shouts outs Pompeii frozen in Time
For your sinuses that Navage thing really works; I've had one for a couple of years and it makes a really big difference, especially when trying to go to sleep.
This song was featured in the trailers for the "Game of Thrones" TV show. Epic!
Swimming Horses is a great favourite of mine. Strange, noone's suggested it yet.
A blast from the past.
My fav Siouxie and the Banshees song is actually a cover--the Passenger. Siouxie Sioux got her start as a groupie of the Sex Pistols in the late 70s. Jay--where I live, Viks Vapo Rub is the cure for EVERYTHING.
When starting in 1976 with Johnny rotten from the sex pistol and working 2 years away from 50 years of music get live band
"Cities In Dust" -- Pompeii and Herculaneum!
(of course posted before they did the 1/2 way break) duh me
Overground and Happy House are bangers
'Dazzle' is a great song. I think Robert Smith plays guitar on it.
A totally misunderstood and under appreciated band! Great vocalist!
