Siouxsie Sioux is an icon for the punk and goth scene, as well as unapologetically being a strong woman in a man's world at that time in music. A true trailblazer.

Siouxsie and The Banshees, started releasing singles and albums towards the end of the Punk Rock movement in the U.K. their early stuff was very Punk with tracks like, "Love In a Void", but quickly developed their own sound which was included in the 'Alternative' scene a lot of which became 'Goth' after the term started being used, some tracks to check out by them are: "Happy House", "Christine", "Arabian Knights", "Hong Kong Garden", "Cities in Dust", "Israel', "Dazzle", "Slowdive", "Kiss Them for Me", "Peek-a-Boo (The Silver Dollar Mix)", "Dear Prudence", there are many more but these are good ones to start with.

Your mention of Goth was right on target. Siouxsie Sioux kind of set the template for what would be called Goth fashion in later years. During the first half of the eighties, you saw a lot of girls trying to look like her, do their hair like her, do their makeup like her. Her look was really influential and rooted in some of the looks of the 1910s and early 1920s. This band was only briefly punk musically. By the time of this song, 1981, they had acquired a sort of psychedelic guitarist who added some atmosphere to their sound, which you can especially hear in songs like "Christine" from 1980 and their 1983 cover of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence." They actually had a couple of radio hits in the US, but those were much later: "Cities in Dust" from 1985 and "Kiss Them for Me" from 1991. Spin-off bands the Creatures and the Glove, comprised of members of Siouxsie and the Banshees, were also pretty good.

You stopped this at my favourite point where Siouxsie sings "Take them by the legs, and throw them down the stairs" and Budgie (the drummer) plays an epic drum roll that sounds exactly like someone tumbling down the stairs.😀
Siouxsie Sioux is the Godmother of punk & goth and a huge number of female artists have said they were inspired by her.
She was originally part of the 'Bromley Contingent' which also included Steve Severin and Billy Idol amongst others who were groupies of the Sex Pistols and leaders of the punk fashion & music revolution.
There was a very famous interview of the Sex Pistols on TV where Siouxsie also attended. The host suggested they meet up after the show and Johnny Rotten famously called him out as 'A dirty old man'. Steve & Siouxie then formed the Banshees.
The band also has a lot of links with Robert Smith of the Cure. Smith and Steve Severin became friends and he accompanied the band on a tour during which the guitarist and drummer quit a few hours before they were due on stage. Robert filled in and was part of the band for a couple of years. It was this time he got his iconic look from Siouxsie and he also learnt how to be a front man from her.
Robert and Steve Severin also had a side project called 'The Glove' which they did while Siouxie and the drummer, Budgie, were doing their own side project 'The Creatures' who are worth a listen too.

Yessss! To me, Siouxsie is the godmother of the goth style. The first song I heard of theirs was “Peek-a-boo,” when I was maybe 10 or 11. And it’s probably the most mainstream imo, which is why I heard it-it was on MTV. I was a little bit goth in my first years of high school but I definitely didn’t come to appreciate Siouxsie and the Banshees until I was well into adulthood.

Now..Please check out "Peekaboo", "Slowdive" and a really cool cover of the Beatles "Dear Prudence." I heard the Siouxsie version of it first (in high school) and had no idea it was a Beatles song. The Banshees really did it justice.

**"Spellbound tells a story of a child and the vulnerability he faces when gaining knowledge as a young infant. Through its lyrics, you can easily see that the first verse speaks about the inability of the child to escape the voices speaking to him, because he cannot talk, walk, and make decisions as an infant. In other words, he is stuck in his bed, confined within the cradle bars, as the voices (arguably that of his parents and relatives) forces a language onto him-a language he will grow up to master, whether he likes it or not. The second verse also illuminates his vulnerabilities by stating that “You hear laughter, cracking though the walls, it sends you spinning” ―suggesting that the laughter (which can also mean knowledge) is actually a torment because it is a knowledge that is forced onto the child (who is still confined in his bed) on what the society deems humorous or serious when there is an absence of laughter. Following the footsteps of the adult that had taught him since infancy, the child grows up rebellious because he had realized that some of the knowledge forced onto him were fabricated, that he would now have to un-learn everything he had learn and relearn everything anew. So, he turns violent to his elders, because he is spellbound to the knowledge that have molded him up until this very point. The depiction of the free dance in the music video Siouxsie Sioux jams with is simply a gesture to depict a command/knowledge forced onto the vulnerable crowd, to hypnotize them and make them delusional at her wish."**
**You said: "The fact that you don't get it doesn't mean it's bad, just that your taste never got the chance to develop."
That's cute. Never underestimate or assume someone doesn't know what they're talking about.**
Let me tell you a little background on the old Sarge here. You said, "You didn't have the chance to develop." Hmmm you still here? Prepare to get told to go fuck yourself right quick. Cause the truth is comin and it's gonna smack ya broadside upside the head and it's not gonna feel good. Aaaand....HEREWEGO!
      BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!BAM! BAM!
I grew up in the Minnesota punk scene, back when punk first started in the late 70s. I was 7 years old at the time. First time I heard a local band my older brother took me to see, Knothole, at a barn party at old man Johannson's farm (They played my wedding in '92. I flew them to Denmark (I was stationed in the Metal Mecca of the world, Germany at the time) and I was fuckin hook, line, and sinker, into the scene.
I saw the who's who of Goth and Punk at 1st Avenue (also saw Prince before he got signed). Between the age of 9 ('77) and 21 (I joined the Army in '89), 100s of concerts we'd seen driving up from the Farm into the big city. And...we used to have these things called...record stores and MTV (that actually was a 24/7 all music channel). We'd check out the new releases and get to listen to them. What I liked, I bought. And when I first heard S&TB, it was a hard pass for me, but I bought it for a girl down the road because she dug that band. Eesh, but...she ended up becoming my wife. (God rest her. Fuck cancer!)
I can tell you in Minneapolis, for the majority of the suburban and street kids, punk and Goth in the 70's and 80s was a way of life.
Then...it happened. The day I heard Kill Em All from Metallica, for the first time, my life changed. I left Punk for Thrash. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer aka The Big 4. I was obsessed, like a crack fiend, I needed more and more. Bands that followed them, Testament, Overkill, Napalm Death, Venom, Death, and the list goes on and on.
I've been in the game since I was 7 years old. I'm a true-blue Minnesotan Redneck Punk Kid. Born on the Farm, moshing in the city and barn parties! Now, am I a Samm Dunn? No. Am I close? Yes. I don't have a degree in Anthropology like he has.
I don't know how old you are, nor do I care. I also DJ'd for 35 years. If they have anyone in their subsciber list who knows music, it's this guy who has 1000s of CDs, Tapes, Vinyl, 8 Tracks, and Tape, 88rpm, 45rpm, and 33rpm.
I have a PhD in Spinology. The fact is, when someone says they don't like your music, you folks get fired up about it and attack the person personally. That tells me you already lost the debate. You got spun up in the moment of someone else's business. That's okay. Now you're getting digismacked in the face and brought back to reality that people like me, us GenX types, we don't back down from a good verbal argument.

Oh, one more thing, ah-em....when you perform in front of 35,000 people at RFK as...how did the promoter put it to DC101? Oh yeah. "This band in Virginia's answer to Pantera."-Virginia Metal Coalition, "This Veteran groove metal band is the Virginian Version of Clutch."-Maryland Sound Design "If there was a band that I'd work with any day and bring on tour with us, it's this one." - Zakk Wylde, Black Label Society (We ended up as an opening act in Virginia venues when they came through. (We had high paying day jobs)
You're going to reply, "What's the name of your band?" And I'm going to reply, well, since you came at me like a fuckin douche canoe, that's not going to happen. You don't' like my genre so fuck you, Leg!" will most likely have been my reply.
Now, I'm going to say this as nicely as I can. When you have the same phone numbers of the people I've toured with, recorded with, and lived on a bus with, in your contacts on your phone, you can call me impressed.
Hey, just remember, you came at me. You called me a troll and... that your taste never got the chance to develop.

My students are always shocked to see Ms. Brooks all gothed out! Ha! There are so many songs to suggest. More radio-friendly would be "Kiss Them for Me," Peek-a-boo," and I love "The Killing Jar." It took me a while to appreciate them, and I don't listen to too much of their stuff," but they do have some songs I love. FYI, regarding The Cure, their lead singer used to be the lead guitarist for Siouxsie and the Banshees from 1982-1984. I love her cover of the Beatles song, "Dear Prudence."

Siouxsie started out punk, but she was moving into goth and post punk sounds even before she had put out her first album. They moved all over the map genre wise; but they always kept a tinge of that goth style throughout (and were one of the creators of that style and look).

Siouxsie and The Cure are in a league of their own and imho should always be named together because the two bands were so connected to each other.
Both are a big part of the soundtrack of my teens, and for me the music has not aged at all, it had a kickass drive then, and it still has that same kickass drive today.
I hope you'll check out more of their songs, like "Cities in dust", "Dear Prudence", "Israel", and "Hong Kong Garden" to name but a few.
But.. i am sure you'll already be getting tons of requests, so.. i can't wait to see what future song you have in store for us. :)

Siouxsie & the Banshees are an amazing band. Siouxsie Sioux has such a unique voice and the Goth/post punk style that they created is unlike anyone else out there. One of my favorite bands of this genre. Made some incredible music - "Peek-A-Boo", "Kiss Them For Me", "Dear Prudence", "Cities in Dust", "Happy House".
This era of music produced a number of bands out of England that overlapped, some spinning off into other bands. Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, Adam & The Ants all have connective tissue with each other and were a part of a growing post-punk/goth/alternative scene (call it what you want). This was a style of music that was artistic, creative, unique and driven by bass & drums.
You need to check out Adam & The Ants who later just became Adam Ant. One of my favorite artists of that time and still touring today. Songs: "Stand & Deliver", "Antmusic", "Car Trouble", "Physical". Also check Adam's solo work - "Strip", "Goody Two Shoes", Vive Le Rock", "Wonderful", "Room At The Top".

I got to see Siouxsie and the Banshees on the very first Lollapalooza which featured Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T, Living Color, The Rollins Band, and Butthole Surfers, with Jane's Addiction closing the show. They were fantastic live and if there is such a thing as a commanding yet also an ethereal presence on stage it was Siouxsie.
It's also interesting that Siouxsie was a member of the Sex Pistols entourage early on and appeared with them on a British talk show where the drunken host eventually hit on her causing the Pistols to ruthlessly ridicule him on live television. That interview is on TH-cam.

Siouxsie are a hugely influential band in the post-punk/Goth scene. She was on TV with The Sex Pistols when they got banned by the BBC, Robert Smith of The Cure was a band member for a short while. They do an awesome cover of The Beatles, Dear Prudence!

So glad you have started onto your Siouxsie journey! I was introduced to them at summer camp, when I was 12, back in 1984. They have been a fave ever since, especially as I studied voice. I spent hours and hours up in my room, repeating the songs loudly over and over, picking up and mastering every little nuance and inflection of Siouxsie's dramatic delivery and belting it out. One of my favorite albums is "Tinderbox", which is in my cd player in the car right now as I always pull it out in the fall because it just fits - I highly recommend it. "Cities in Dust" was one of my favorite songs in high school, but all of the songs are powerful and amazing. Haunting - their work is haunting, like a crazy dark carnival ride that projects the shadow aspects of our psyche back to us. I haven't watched the video for "Spellbound" in a long time. I think their lyrics are multi-layered in meaning and I wonder if this song, which seems to touch on programming and generational abuse, is also hinting at SRA/TBMC...check out the work of Cathy O'Brien or Jessie Zebotar if you want to know more. The colors, the running, the feeling of panic and dissociation, illusions, feeling, "Spellbound" are all things that happen in this practice, that is passed down from generation to generation. In nature, to see black and yellow is a sign of caution, of poison and toxicity. Red is the color of sacrifice. Black and white, well, if you know, you know. I just thought about their song, "Candyman" (Tinderbox), looked up the lyrics and came to find that, in fact, Siouxsie was molested as a child. I think that people are starting to awaken to the realities as to how deep this runs through our society, what a sickness it is and how we need to face it if we are ever going to stop it. That's why I love your channel and others who react to the music I was so influenced by. It gives me the opportunity to "rediscover" with you and learn, as an adult, why this music affected me so deeply back when I really didn't quite grasp the full meaning behind the message, at least, from a conscious state of mind. Love your reactions, thanks for all you two do!

For the song itself I love how muscular it is, the percussive beat going through it and slowing to an even more powerful beat every now and then. Then there's Siouxsie's voice matching it's power.

As relevant and influential she was for Morrissey of The Smiths and Robert Smith of The Cure, she also was for the whole goth musical subculture, bringing all the punk elements that are part of its foundations to the table. Siouxsie's voice is incredible and haunting, their music through their albums is a wonderful journey of dark post punk/new wave discovery, best years between 78 to 88. On drums we have the ever present 'Budgie' who was outstanding. Guitar work comes mainly from John Mcgeoch a truly brilliant guitarist, also Steve Severin on Bass who co founded the group in 76. Fun fact, Robert Smith of the Cure also played guitar and piano for the group at a later stage while ALSO running the Cure.

"Budgie" - the drummer - is an icon in the drumming world. The whole band is awesome, and they put on a great show.

Siouxie Sioux is the godmother of Goth. So much great stuff for you to discover. PeekABoo, Kiss Them For Me, Dear Prudence, Cities in the Dust, Shadowtime, the list goes on and on. (Trivia: Robert Smith of The Cure was briefly a member of The Banshees).

Goth 100%. Them, Bauhaus, Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Sisters of Mercy… one of their songs that charted was Peek-a-boo. It’s a bit more poppy.

FINALLY!!!! Siouxsie and the Banshees are the best!! They have a lot of great songs that are all so different. You really should react to “Cities in Dust”!!!

Siouxsie Siou was a punk way before forming her own band.
If you watch the late 1970s interview with Mr Grundy and the Sex Pistols on BBC, which is still somewhere on TH-cam, Siouxsie is stood in the background.
