Pretty sure every century has got one of those... But more seriously; kids & teens from the 50's, 80s, 90's & 00's all say the same about those periods and they're all right.
Nederbeat was the term given to Dutch pop/rock bands, like Merseybeat was used as a term to describe the groups coming out of Liverpool. "Venus" was a huge world-wide hit, reaching Number 1 in quite a few countries.
The song was such a huge hit all over the world (and is still played on radio all over) that the guy who wrote it, the guitarplayer, can live easily and happily from the royalties. He did some music work since the Shocking Blue but nothing as succesfull as Venus.
Other EU popular bands in the US: The Scorpions (Germany), ABBA (Sweden as you said), U2 (Ireland), The Corrs (Ireland), Rammstein (Germany), Europe (Sweden). I'm sure there are more, but these are the only ones I can think of easily.
Shocking Blue was such an underrated band, always only known for her "Venus"....I have all their albums on vinyl...check their other songs out, you'll be surprised😉
Big #1 song. I remember buying the record in December 1969. It was released in December 1969 and hit number one in early 1970. It was a Gold record.❤❤❤
Nederbeat - the Dutch pop scene from late sixties and seventies. There were many bands from the Hague, not only Shocking Blue and Golden Earring but also Earth & Fire, Tee Set (Ma Belle Amie), Sandy Coast, Q65, and from nearby Delft the band Alquin.
One could argue for the Cats, Pussycat, Rowwen Hèze, DeWolff, Navarone, Johan, Van Dik Hout, The Nits, Doe Maar, De Staat, BZN, Krezip, Within Tempation, Kane, Kensington, Earth & Fire or Di-Rect. But they ,of course, all pale compared to the legendary Sjonnies as well to the WC Experience.
@@laziojohnny79 So much new information? Are they all Dutch? Need to check them all out. I am pretty impartial cause my second foreign language in college was Dutch. From the very first day our professor started to teach us Dutch songs, however, older, more traditional stuff like Geef mij maar Amsterdam, Tulpen uit Amsterdam, Oh Johnny, Wat zullen wij drinken (zeven dagen lang), etc. We loved them and they increased our vocabulary so much. It's a good way to learn a foreign language. So thank you very much for listing all these artists. Although they sing in English, I love Dutch pop and rock. I would also like to mention Luv' (sorry about that 🙂). But they were great export for Holland. Thanks again and God Bless! P.S. BTW, just checked out Rowwen Hèze. Great stuff! Sounded rather Celtic to me.
@@musicaficionado2974 Yep all Dutch artists. The fact Luv is one of your guilty pleasures proves you have passed your Dutch exam and have earned you place among us. Yeah I get that although Rowwen Hèze is more considered to be a folk, country & Bluegrass band.
Los Bravos were a Spanish beat group, formed in 1965 and based in Madrid. They are most well known for their debut single "Black Is Black" which reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom in July 1966 and No. 4 in the United States (the first Spanish group to do so), selling over a million records worldwide.
Don't know if someone already answered your question' what is Nederbeat exactly', so let's try to explain it for you... 'Nederbeat' is the Dutch musical streaming from the early or mid sixties till the end of that decade in witch catchy poppy songs became populair. It was a reaction on the English beat music from that period (like The Beatles). A lot of Dutch bands became really populair with the youth with that kind of music. Bands like Shocking Blue, Tee Set, Sandy Coast, Golden Earings (yes, with an 's' at the end 🙂 ) and Q65 to name a few... 😊😊🙂
Many groups from other parts of the world became wildly popular in the US. ABBA and the Beatles (and many others from GB) just to name a couple. From Austraila and Canada too. There even was a smash hit in the US by the Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto called Sukiyaki. I sure that there have been many more that I can't think of now.
Here some but the most come from England, the Groups that here writhen down had mostly 2 well known songs in a sudden part of the U.S.A. Scorpions, Alphaville, Rammstein [Germany], Venga Boys, Golden Earing, Andre Rieu [Netherlands], U2, [some other bands from Ireland of Scottland] [Ireland], Abba, The Cardigans, Avicii, Roxette, Europe, [Zweden] MANESKIN, A.Boccelli, [Italie] Enrique Iglesias, [Spain] then one hit wonders like : Falco, ?Maccarena?, Milli Vanilli, Zuccherro, and others.
A fun group to watch was The Tielman Brothers they were the first Dutch-Indonesian band to successfully venture into the international music scene in the 1950s. They were one of the pioneers of rock and roll in The Netherlands, and are credited with releasing the first Dutch rock and roll single, "Rock Little Baby of Mine" in 1958. The band became famous in Europe for playing a kind of rock and roll later called Indorock. I remember this group. Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in 1967. Their 2 biggest hits were "Venus" & "Send Me A Postcard". They had some other songs such as "Long & Lonesome Road", "Mighty Joe", "Never Marry A Railroad Man" etc. The lead singer had a very powerful voice. Another famous Dutch group from that era was Golden Earring.
In regards to foreign musicians being popular in the USA outside of the U.S. is rare. It's rare to be Canadian, even, to have success in the U.S. In the 1960s, there was the British Invasion with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks & The Yardbirds to name a few bands. Followed by other British bands in the decade like The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin & The Bee Gees to name some more. The 70s had bands like The Bee Gees, Queen, ELO, Supertramp, Genesis & Foreigner. The 1980s saw the USA get their second "British Invasion" with the New Wave genre of music led by Duran Duran & its countryman like Culture Club, Billy Idol, The Human League, The Fixx & The Police to also name several notable artists from this listing. There hasn't been any group of British bands/musicians who have made an impact with the American music audience since the early 1980s with the second British Invasion. So the British influence with the American audience I'd say ran predominantly from the early to mid-1960s through the mid-1980s. In regards to bands from Europe outside of Great Britain. There are Irish musicians such as U2, Enya, The Cranberries & Sinéad O'Connor. Sweden: ABBA & Ace Of Base. France: Daft Punk, Deep Forest & Air. Germany: Rammstein, Enigma, Scorpions, Kraftwerk, & Nena. Austria: Falco. There are most likely others but not many.
ABBA was very popular in the States. Little River Band, AC/DC and The Seekers (folk music) Australian bands that found success in the States. Santana originally from Mexico. Shakira from Columbia. I personally like Peter Fox from Berlin. These are a few that come to mind. I'm sure there are many others.
1970s 'Pussycat' was from Holland, a lot of hits also from Holland 'Golden Earing' and their big hit 'Radar Love'. . . . The Scorpions from Germany and the big hit 'Wind of change' 1990. . . . solo artist Demis Roussos from Greece had some hits one being 'My Friend the Wind' . . . . .there's 4
Just to let you know you're talking about ABBA but ABBA only had one number one in America which was Dancing Queen as well they had about 9 number ones in the UK
Coming close to my country (Belgium) and to my youth. All European bands in this time, were preferring to make songs in English, when the had a hope to get big, recognized 'all over the world' (= in England and the USA). Most failed, but some did have one or a few songs doing good. One trick pony's. Venus is one of those examples. Shocking Blues had no other song with succes like that. From my country : Daydreams, th-cam.com/video/_wFMY0r7X-w/w-d-xo.html
German metal bands are very popular. ABBA was huge. Nena had a couple of hits in the eighties(99 luft balloons). Hispanic msicians have made some inroads recently, in both pop and rap songs. And of course all the Romanian and Polish rockkers are well known. (Just kidding).
Yes there are popular bands from Europe outside of the UK, in the USA. Shocking Blue, Venus 3 week number 1 in the top 100 in the US. And Golden Earring with the songs: Radar Love and Twilight zone. These are both Dutch bands. But there are also the Scorpions from Germany and more.
Thanks for another great reaction. The melody for this was from a version of the old US folk song O Susanah, by Tim Rose, he called it the Banjo Song. Neil Young played an electric version as a teen in his band, finally recording it that way in the early 2000s th-cam.com/video/9uqnN3ek2vI/w-d-xo.html
Neder-beat stands for Dutch bands playing beat (rock) mostly in English. Late 60ties and the 70ties those Dutch bands where after UK and USA bands most succesfull in the charts. And that is without speaking English as your native language quit a thing.

Another great Dutch band. Being a drummer this drummer is Cor van der Beek who died in 1998. Fun reaction and review. 👊🏻
Fun fact: Mariska didn't speak English, so she memorized the lyrics phonetically.
Which is why she sings Godness instead of Goddess. There was a typo when the lyrics were written out.
Celine Dion did that too.
