It was really interesting watching the casting even if part of it didn't turn out. I am a machinist and for whatever reason we don't recycle the chips... I am machining a 6in X 9in X 3in box out of a solid block and I couldn't bare to see all those chips get thrown away so I have been gathering them in buckets to hopefully cast. I imagine mostly I'll be turning them back into aluminum bar stock to be machined again. But all the tips and tricks are very helpful! Great video! Love seeing the casting content too! Its amazing how it seems like as soon as I want to do something my favorite TH-cam channel has JUST made a video showing how to!

Aluminium swarf is problematic, as Al Oxide has very nearly the same density as pure metal, so it neither float well or sinks. Since Al oxides immediately on contact with air, each of those chicks has a little oxide shell, which will be suspended in the melt, kind of like a slushy. You are better off casting with either virgin ingots, or at least start with castings like wheels or cylinder heads.
With Iron or bronze, the oxide is much lighter than the melt and floats to be skimmed off easily as slag.

The traditional way to mix plaster is by sprinkling the plaster into the water, that way you don't introduce air into it, if your plastering a wall it doesn't matter, but, for casting, mix with your hand, slide it into the plaster, keeping it below the surface. Having sprinkled the plaster in there should be practically no air bubbles. I don't "know" your investment plaster, traditional plaster takes one volume of water to one volume of plaster. less water makes it stronger, more, and it's not taken up by the plaster. When I say "know", I mean that plaster varies depending on it's age, the older it is the more it will take on water with time, until it gets to an age where it won't "go off" any more! I love plaster!!! Cheers, Matthew

Not sure if it’s available on your side of the pond, but instead of using a razor for getting parts off of the print bed I use a metal bladed Scotty peeler. They are intended to be a sticker/label remover, but they are designed to be worked underneath something tight which makes it really good for getting under the part. It’s a lot easier to control than a razor.
Also, this was a worthwhile bait and switch.

What an incredible project! It has been amazing to watch. I'm a little curious - how do you feel about it now?
The reason I ask is that I've got a 10x22 lathe (just the one) and I'm considering a CNC conversion. I make a lot of consistent parts and it would be a huge help. I do make custom things too though... So I'm always afraid I will shoot myself in the foot. Even tonight I was easing into some cuts thinking "that's the kind of tactile feedback you don't get with CNC"
So my dilemma is - once one is proficient can CNC basically be a more sophisticated (or at least accurate) way of making parts that you get used to thinking about? Can you do manual turning just via MPG, or do you end up using gcode and models for everything? Am I gonna curse myself if I give up the handwheels?
Thanks and I can't wait to take an even deeper dive into all your videos!

    • @RotarySMP
      @RotarySMP  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good questions:
      - how do you feel about it now?
The mini lathe is still the same flexible noodle, lacking mass it was before. As such it is only nice for very small parts. I much prefer turning parts on the Boley, even though it is very worn.
      - Tactile feedback
I cant really answer this. I used the mini lathe for years under TurboCNC with no MPG at all. That was good as TCNC had some good canned cylces, and it taught me G code. I only put a single MPG on the minilathe, with a selector switch between axis. This is typical on a mill, where you only jog for set up, but I think this was a mistake for a lathe. The Schaublin will get a dedicated MPG on each axis. Schaublin did that on the follow on 125-CCN. How that feels, I dont know yet. I tend to only make one offs, so the manual jogging with MPG's I expect to be nearl as fast as the manual boley lathe.
      - do you end up using gcode and models for everything?
Lathe part geometry is so simple, that I nearly never make models. I used the TurboCNC G77 code which did incremental passes along features about 80% of the time. In LinuxCNC I still need to set up Andy Pughs Lathe macros, which will give conversational programming. I expect with that implemented, I will probably conversationally code 99% of jobs directly on the lathe.

Shell investment casting is a different technique. It uses a very different type of plaster, which I have not been able to obtain. I see you have a pressurized oil reservoir, get yourself a fuel nozzle from a furnace. New is like 20 euros.
Here is what I do. Oil diluted with diesel about 50-50, pressurized to 3 bar. I have a car oil filter inline just in case.
Stick a piece of burning paper in the furnace, air on, fuel on from a needle valve, woosh, clean flames , happy neighbours. No preheating BS or anything.
