I've watched all your upgrade videos now, and I've got to say, this is the most comprehensive group of videos on this subject I've ever seen, and I've watched quiet a few, dozen...lol Thanks much sir. Great job! Patiently waiting for more... When your done with that thing you'll be able to trim individual molecules off your work pieces. I'll definitively be doing this to my Lathemaster 8x14 with the hopes of building an accurate watchmakers lathe/mill. I think the added experience tearing down and rebuilding my mini lathe will go along way to building other, smaller machine tools. Thanks again...
Good idea and simple fix. My mini lathe didn’t come with wipers at all so I’ve been pondering a fix. The bar all the across make much more sense than messing about with four separate wiper retainers. Thanks
Great job my mini lathe did not come with wipers I need to add some. Have about the same idea but using marine board instead of Aluminum. Have some left over from my boat depth finder mount. Awesome as always. Watching in Alabama
This series has left me with the impression than in order to get a chinese no name mini lathe I need: a milling machine, a surface plate and a healthy amount of free time. Do you have any idea, if name brand versions of this lathe tend to be better? Even if your theory that these lathes are composed of QA rejects is true and name brand getter better parts. There seems to be a lot of labor required in addition to QA of parts in order to get a decent machine based on your series.
I got my felt at spotlight and used steel instead of aluminum but did very similar to you. It was a challenge because my saddle is too big to lift off for me at the moment with a crook back.
Great idea and thanks for sharing! Did you consider a chamfer in the outboard faces, considering the thickness of the plates, to minimize chip buildup and facilitate chip removal with a brush or air blast? Just a thought. I need to get back to lapping this weekend if I ever hope to catch up! Please keep them coming as time allows!
Genius , friggen genius . Don't know how good a magnetic version would be (seems like it would attract and hold a bunch of extra-fine chip pieces to let loose at the most inopportune times).
Good to see an update on this project - I've enjoyed it a lot so far. I need to redo the wipers for my lathe too. It has factory wipers, but they're totally crusted up. In definite need of a refresh. Thanks for the timely reminder. Have you got an ebay link for the felt? That little lathe is looking better and better, well done on all the progress - shiny knobs and handwheels even. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Tassie, Craig. PS: Congrats on your imminent clicking over to 2k subscribers!
A bit of a problem with your hand/camera coordination at the beginning. :) The mini lathe has really become a serious piece of equipment. Light duty, for sure, but accurate, repeatable and looks bloody hot! I just use machine head screws for the look - not much accuracy though!
G'day Mike, the Lathe's going great, thanks for asking. You'll see it in use in many of my Videos. No regrets other than getting such a cheap POS to begin with. I did actually enjoy the challenge of transforming it into a useable workshop tool though. Cheers Mate.
Wipers? You mean to tell me that POS Ebay nightmare actually came with wipers?! My Hf Sooper Special POS didn't come with any. Nice fix though. Looking forward to the next video.
I must have used a different felt as I also did not try to compress it so I could oil the felt with way oil. wipes but also oils the ways. My lathe had no wipes to start with, cheap!

Absolutely brilliant, I’ll be doing it for my new lathe, cheers from Brisbane
Cheers Don, they do seem to work really well

Started in Feb and end up in Oct to get a working machine takes some time to get it there.
It's been about a year. How's this lathe doing? Any changes? Any regrets?

That's gonna work for sure.

Damn, more mini lathe porn.
Don't know how I missed this one.
Cheers m8
Thanks Mate, Cheers.
Merry Christmas brother, and stay frosty.
nice video MATE,see you next time
hi m8 what size pulley did you use for your motor
Nice job!
Great idea
Excellent!
who do you buy your motors from
Depends upon the treadmill on the side of the road , I imagine .
You were good, but my head is full of words. After 18 episodes I thought I saw the lathe running, I am a little disappointed
I would think the adhesive on the back would hold the grit and wear Ur bed
