  • Join my family and I on a random last minute road trip across China. Enjoy some of the views, join me for a bit of conversation, and follow us as we try and fix our vehicle malfunctioning in the Sichuan mountainside regions.
China has been building an amazing road network with new tunnels and bridges all across the country and previously difficult-to-access places are all of a sudden within reach.

I'm from the UK but visit China often and feel more at home there. The people I've met in China are friendly, politely curious, and helpful. Road trips, bullet train journeys, and even intercity bus journeys are so fascinating, relaxing and therapeutic. I hope to work and potentially permanently reside in China in future. Quality videos such as this effectively demonstrate not only the infinite beauty and wonder of China, but its constantly increasing accessibility as well.

China has experienced too many wars in history, so the Chinese people cherish peace more than anyone else, and welcome all peace-loving people to live in China.

@@user-kn6fv4ly7h Indeed, the Chinese people have experienced immense suffering through wars and revolutions. From such a tumultuous past , you have created a beautiful country, with wonderful people, and great systems, security and infrastructure. China is a wonderful place for all positive and hard-working people, and provides great opportunities for success in work and happiness in life.

@@DJ-rd8vb I understand your view, especially considering the immensely damaging impact that foreigners have had on China in the past, and the continuous attempts of many foreigners to undermine and unfairly criticise China. You have a country and identity that you can be very proud of, and should certainly protect from negative and insidious foreign influence. However, the Chinese government is very wise in inviting only those foreigners who are educated, skilled, experienced, and hardworking, to contribute to China's continued ascendency.

I have been 5 times to China. I don't agree at all. It is just to different and I don't like the State controlling people's lives. It is just so many people. Also I don't fit into the culture. It seems like people enjoy sitting on the streets on pink plastic chairs drinking tea and playing mahjong. Too boring for me. All that said. I respect the Chinese people and I try to be polite. Also I have attempted learning the language. The main problem is that one does not hear the language often enough to get really under the skin of it.
My advice if you want to go to China. Don't. It is not what you might think it is.

a really nice video for which many thanks. We live in Kunming City the capital of Yunnan Province and travel extensively all over China as I am now retired. So very familiar with the scenery in your video as also Shenzhen. Yunnan is a beautiful place too with some of the highest mountains in the world. The national parks in Jojaigo and Hailong are magnificent places to visit in the autumn. China has in just three decades become a truly modern country with top class infrastructure and really nice helpful people everywhere who go out of their way to help you on your way. Magnificent food and restaurants although it is quite safe to eat from roadside restaurants and stalls especially in Yunnan. While speeding down highways we frequently go down the backroads (we have a Jeep 4WD) to see what is on the other side of the hills and mountains we pass. More fantastic scenery and small towns where we are frequently invited to eat with local farmers whose food is actually better than the stuff we get in highway restaurants. It is amazing what these kind folk can do with the simplest of ingredients, all of which they grow. A magnificent place indeed.

Daniel, thanks for the videos. Myself and my wife were in Guilin last year, it's so great there. We were going to take a train to Yangshou and see the sights there as well for a few days and on the way to the hotel that day the cab driver was talking to us and he said "How much is the train to Yangshou?" and we told him, and he just said "I'll take you there for that, and we can see all the views on the way and you can take pictures."
What an absolutely amazing guy . So he took us, and spent the whole day pretty much showing us around all these beautiful scenic spots, stopped for a coffee, all for about £30. We obviously tried to give him some more but he just said "I don't need it, it was nice to meet you".
This kind of thing has happened to me a few times as well :)

Great footage! Keep it up! This is important work because in the US and rest of the west it's still widely perceived that China is some depressing, freedom-suppressing monolith. I was in China last Nov for the first time in 11 years. Before the visit, I warned my wife who had never been to China that the way it really is over there compared to the American media coverage would shock her. She finds it amusing when she tells Americans how it was like in China and they give her a look like they can't believe what they're hearing - it's just not in keeping with the propaganda they're used to hearing. I visited Qingdao, Jinan, Tai'an City, Beijing, Guangzhou, Taishan, Foshan, Macao and the consistent high quality of all the cities was remarkable. My mom's hometown, Guangzhou, used to have no skyline and the streets would flood every time it rained hard in the 90s. I remember thinking what a contrast it was compared to my hometown of Chicago. Now the contrast is reversed: today Guangzhou is simply better than Chicago and has a brighter future. Unfortunately, Chicago has not really progressed much in past couple decades in terms of poverty alleviation, corruption cleanup, and infrastructure.

To see some of the older buildings was such a treat for me. I’m sure I will never get to China, so I really appreciated the efforts you’ve gone to show people some of China.i have really taken an interest in China these last few years, the more criticism China gets the more interest I took. You can’t keep politics out of any discussion when China is part or central to the conversation.
I have been interested in politics all my life, and China has always fascinated me, I’m aware of the criticisms China gets, but I’m also aware of the role my country Britain played in China being dominated by us and the Americans. As I said , I follow politics closely, so every time my country or America rubbish China, that’s when I tend to get really interested. For me the project was an unqualified success, and I certainly never expected to be given the opportunity to visit China, but with your kind assistance I’ve done, I will never be able to repay your act of generosity, but from the scribble I hope you can fathom how grateful I am , all the best to you and your family, I do hope I can view another travelogue soon. It’s good to see that your sons have enjoyed the snow and made a snow ball the first time. Thanks for sharing your experience on the roads and through the mountains.

I have to add after watching the whole thing: well done. It’s really a high quality video. I like the editing, narratives and the music which all make the video interesting. And your ability of fixing problems in a foreign country is amazing. I wouldn’t be so confident to handle all these problems all by myself even I grown up in China. You’re pretty much a local now. One more suggestion that if you could draw up your itinerary on a map at the beginning of the video, it’d be helpful for people who aren’t familiar with China’s geography.

there are three snow mountains you cannot miss in Sichuan, first is Gongga, which located Kangding, it will take you 4 hours expressway drive from Chengdu - Ya'an - Kangding, and the peak about 7556m high,it considered as the most dangerous and challenging peak and only 30 climbers made to the top in history, and it's nice to visit the Panda reserve district in Ya'an, and you can visit Hailuogou, which the basecamp of Gongga, there is a lovely town over there, and you can take cablecar to see the gorgeous glacier and enjoy the spring in the town.
Second one is located in the Daocheng- Yading, keep driving from Kangding, and it may takes you 8-10 hours to get there, and also you can take bus from Kangding, but there are no expressway after Kangding, and the car have to climb over several snow mountains and the elevation also go higher and higher up to more the 4000m, yes, it's a tough trip, especially in the winter season, so the best season should be October, at that time, it is just like a colorful painting, white、blue 、yellow and red …, the scenery are absolutely breathtaking!
The third one is Siguniang mountain, it will takes you around 6 hours from Chengdu - Rilong, the scenery there are quite like Alps in Europe.
And more mountains will be more accessible in the next few years, two direction of expressway from Chengdu all the way to Tibet are been constructed, first one is G4218 Ya'an - Ye cheng, it is about more than 4000km long, second one is G4217 Chengdu - Changdu, which is Daniel experienced in this episode, these two so called "sky road" will be complete in the next 10 ~ 20 years, hope these info helps you.

Wow. Epic. That was worth the watch. Great you roll with the punches and come up smiling in the face of adversity. Amazing in all aspects. Love the downloading 2,000 RMB to your bank account from your phone. That was cool. Street shots, the neon lights in the roof of the tunnels, dragons flying on the sides of buildings, little things like people walking down the street, a girl pushing a bike, four young males, nothing to do, one blowing a stream of smoke from his cigarette, statues, streams in narrow passes, your kid's first snow. An hour should be a slog, but this was a good length. Glad you didn't cut out the hard times with your car in the mountains. Loved that. Am now a subscriber.
