G'day René, I've commented before about how outstanding your modelling skills are and this P-38 is no exception. I particularly liked the custom paint jobs you did, all with handmade stencils, that was outstanding.
I have this kit too and I've done a lot of research on these models with the 'uncovered' turbochargers. The photos I have of this type of turbocharger on the P-38s all produced a huge amount of extremely dark, almost jet black, exhaust marks from the front of the turbochargers going way back down the top of the twin fuselages.
Some models of the P-38 had parts of their turbochargers covered by small panels. These drastically reduced the exhaust marks on those particular P-38s. As your P-38 is a 'J' model, and its turbochargers are uncovered, it would be quite easy for you to thin down some black oil paint or find some dark graphite powder to accurately recreate the ‘uncovered’ turbocharger exhaust marks that this model made. J Models could also have the covered turbochargers as these were post-factory modifications.
As I said these exhaust marks are near total black, however, there is a blackish acrylic colour called 'Anthracite' that I've used on P-38s and, I reckon, it’s about as close as you can get to the real world exhaust marks. Old colour photographs can be a bit confusing and not always totally accurate but an extensive internet search should give you a good idea of what I'm talking about.
Another great model, mate! You've now made me think it's about time I built another P-38... it's been a while. Cheers and all the best. BH
P.S. The eccentric millionaire, Howard Hughes, once held the US air speed record, for a short time, with a specially modified P-38 that had all the rivet heads polished down so finely they could hardly be seen. This increased his air speed by a factor of around 5%. ;)

Thanks for the input, I will try to do those stains more evident on a future P-38, I am also debating with myself if it's worth it to re-edit these old videos, my editing quality has changed quite a bit.
I haven't heard of that speed record :o
      Very interesting

@@moixmodels G'day René, It's really good to read your responses. Thank you. I've had another look at these two videos and, yes, there are a few minor framing and focus issues; plus I'd suggest greater close-ups on the smaller work with a bit better lighting. But they are still quite watchable. If I hadn't done a P-38 kit before I'd probably like to see a little more detail. But that's just my opinion.
I also went back and had a look at the info I have on Howard Hughes' Around the World record attempt. I was wrong. I mixed up the aircraft.
He did his around the world flight, in the far northern latitudes, in 1938, taking three days, 19 hours and 17 minutes. He did this in a Lockheed Mk 14 Electra which was produced as the Hudson light bomber for the RAF. Lockheed's Electra line of aircraft were all extremely advanced and speedy for their time, the Mk 14 being the best. (Hughes used Lockheeds, then DC-3s, to kick start his airline, TWA). He didn't need the money; he was just obsessed with flying and he envisaged a time when everyone could travel anywhere in the world via passenger aircraft. Of course, he lived long enough to see his dream come true but, sadly, by then he had serious mental issues.
Hughes also flew a P-38 in an air race but crashed it. He suffered some serious injuries which he never fully recovered from; these also added to his physical and mental troubles.
His speed record was achieved in a custom built 'H-1 Hughes' Racer', this was the aircraft that was made as smooth as possible. I also made a mistake about the increase in speed. It was actually a 5% decrease in drag which would not have increased the speed by 5% but it certainly would have helped him to get the record.
I read these details about Hughes a long time ago and my memory failed me... this happens more the older I get. :(
Anyway, René, I'm looking forward to catching up with your other videos and I'm sure they are edited and made better. That's OK I work on military documentaries and some of my early work pains me when I see it.
I saw a great documentary on that USN Corsair that made a wrong landing on a carrier and, in their tradition, the other pilots and senior deck crew 'signed' his aircraft which was left like that for the duration. I've never seen that particular aircraft modelled before. I’ve got a soft spot for the Voight Corsair; I just love that unique wing design that was much copied. What an amazing build you did on that model; a perfect ‘wings folded’, it looks so appropriate!
Cheers, and all the best. Bill

@@moixmodels as long as the general idea of what you're doing is shown is all that's needed. I enjoy these videos for the little details and ways I could go about my own projects. For that I say thanks. Building the same bird right now. Hope you keep then builds coming!
