Seen an interview with Mr. Tamiya and he said : why spend money on good decals for the kit when most people just throw them away in favour of aftermarket decals.
Beautiful build - thank you for showing in detail the base coating and mottling portion of the painting process. It does really change the whole appearance in terms of the look you were going for
I am hoping Tamiya will release the P-38J model in 1:48 since they now have the E/F/G models already. I would especially love to see Tamiya release a 1:48 B-26 Marauder. That airplane is an under loved beauty. It would be a nice unique addition to the 1:48 WWII bomber lineup.
This kit is on my Christmas wish list. You did a fabulous job on it, really setting out an easy to follow blueprint for those of us yet to build it. I’m actually planning to build it for my first competition as an adult, in Omaha next summer.
love the p38, it looks amazing! id love to see tamiya retool the fw190d9, and also come out with their own line of 1/72 bombers, but id be happy just with a b24
Great video! I really want to pick this kit up, but right now the price tag is a bit steep. As for a Tamiya wish list, I'd love to see F6F Hellcat and an F-86 Sabre.
Great looking build. I just purchased a cricut and going to paint Israeli Suez Canal crisis markings on a 1/48 eduard p 51. I would love if Tamiya released a Mirage III in 1/48 or 1/32
I tried to order from Hobbynut and they said that they don't ship to BC. Any news on if they will open up shipping to the rest of Canada? I'd love to see Tamiya tackle some more modern subjects. Their A-10 could use an update for example. Their 1/32 F-16 is phenomenal, perhaps they could bring us another modern 1/32 subject.
Would like to see a Tamiya 1/48 Northrop F-5 A/B/D/E/F (CF-5 A/D). Maybe they could even do a T-38 out of the same kit. As for finding kits there is Wheels and Wings in Toronto. They stock many kits and niche products that others do not. They have much more than their online store shows. However you have to deal with the dreaded Canada post cost on top.
I would like to see a P-3C from Tamiya. Hasegawa has taken a couple of runs at the Orion, but I think Tamiya could knock it out of the park with details in the bomb bay and wheel wells. Even in 1/72.
...one aircraft kit from Tamiya ? - EASY. a 1:32 Hawker Hurricane (series), a massively significant type, criminally ignored in this scale. All the best from New Zealand.
Nice work! The P-38 is not an aircraft I have any interest in building myself, but your high praise of the engineering of the kit has me wondering if the new F-4 Tamiya might not be of equal quality. As for your question of what I would like to see Tamiya tackle next, I would want a 1/72 CF-100. There is a less than zero chance this will ever happen, but it is what I would wish for.
I can't see the new F-4 being any worse, but Tamiya seems to improve every kit they release. Their Zero was amazing and my favorite kit until I built this one. A Clunk would be cool but has no real appeal to anyone who's not Canadian. Too small of a demographic
@@TheModelGuy You are right about the Clunk, but the Belgians flew them and there are areas in Germany and France where they were a familiar sight. Unfortunately, in the UK and the USA the Clunk is virtually unknown and those are two of the largest markets for kits.
@@TheModelGuy But for a plane that would be a winner for Tamiya. I think if they did their own version of a 1/48 or 1/32 Hurricane and not just a re-box of the Italieri kit would be awesome.
I just recently saw the Tamiya 1:48th-scale kit of the Lockheed P-38J Lightning USAAF Twin-Engine Single-Seat Fighter-Interceptor (TAM61123); I have yet to find one of a P-38L, though.
Great show, very informative!!!! By the way, I want to see Tamiya do their version of a 1/48 scale TBF Avenger. It's about time for a new tooling of this amazing torpedo bomber. I would add, for 1/32, a P-40B Tomohawk, in Flying Tiger markings and British 112 Squadron markings in North Africa. It would be stunning!!!! Again, great show and happy modeling!!!!
Thanks dude! A 1/48 Avenger would be nice. The Accurate Minature one still holds up today with great interior details and fit. Academy is popping those out still
@@TheModelGuy It would be second best if Tamiya was to do one. I bet they would throw some great engineering at it and wonderful instructions and it would be a masterpiece, right out of the box. You might have to source your own decals though, lol!!!
TAMIYA has already produced the definitive 1/48 P-47D kits (and a P-47M-1, no less!) in both "Razorback" and Bubble Top versions. Now it is high time that some earlier P-47s hit the market. These are, the shorter-nosed, "flat-Keeled" P-47B and the P-47C, now with the longer nose, but 4 less Engine Cooling Flaps than the -Ds, and once again, with the "flat Keel". Many USAAF Aces cut their combat teeth on P-47Cs. Moving ahead in time, we could use a much-improved kit of the P-47N in 1/48th scale. That ACADEMY-thing is getting pretty long in the teeth, if you ask me. Jumping to P-38s, TAMIYA NAILED IT with their F/G and their latest H. NOW we NEED a kit of the J/L- THIS is the one that modelers were anticipating. I personally like the F/G/H-models better, just because the form of these earlier P-38s, I think, are more pure P-38 and truer to Kelly Johnson's original concept of what the Lightning was supposed to be. Also, Photo-Recon and Pathfinder versions, please. And for purists, an original XP-38, a P-38D and E, and also the "castrated" British-cum-USAAF Trainer version, the Lockheed Model 322-B. Are you listening Mr. Tamiya? Not necessarily from TAMIYA, but possibly from the likes of DORA WINGS, how about a 1930s Lockheed Orion, the precursor to the Vega? Possibly from one of the Eastern European makers, what about an XP-67 Moonbat in 1/48th scale? What a wicked-looking airplane that XP-67 was! A PROPER 1/48 F-7F Tigercat and a better 1/48 F8F Bearcat-series might be nice. There are more airplanes buzzing around inside my brain, but the list is too lengthy. And PLEASE EDUARD, give us a rest from all of those Bf.109s. How about a Griffon-Engine Spitfire Mk.XII instead of yet ANOTHER '109..?
I don't see them putting that effort into something that complex. Their Lancaster is still decent for how old it is, but I don't think their new level of engineering would meld with it. The amount of money to develop it would be nuts and after Wingnut Wings went tits up doing a bomber I think the other manufacturers took a close look to see why it failed.
I'd like to see Tamiya come out with a 1/48 Hawker Sea Fury. In the late 90s into the late 00s I worked for an Englishman who took part in the Korea War, and he & his brother flew the Sea Furies. I have lots of cool stories about his sorties. Great p-38 btw!
A note on the P-38 propeller rotation - all (US) P-38s had counter-rotating propellers, though the British (who gave the P-38 its name) did order them with both propellers rotating in the same direction, as well as less powerful engines without turbosuperchargers - performance was reportedly poor, and the British cancelled their order, which might have bankrupted Lockheed. The problem with the twin engines was that if one was lost on takeoff, the remaining engine could provide enough thrust to overcome the ability of the rudders to "keep the pointy end into the wind." Multi-engine training for fighter pilots was not very good, and the P-38 was by far the most sophisticated (and complicated) fighter aircraft in the inventory, and it took a lot of training and experience to allow the pilots to use the aircraft to its full potential.
One of the biggest problems is the Brits wanted commonality with the P-40 engine for easy maintenance so they stripped off the super chargers. Then bitched about lack of performance. I guess they redeemed themselves with the Mustang upgrade later on
@@TheModelGuy Yes, the replacement of the engines and superchargers really limited the high altitude performance- logistics in some cases trumps performance. To be fair, at the time the order was placed, fighting was taking place primarily at altitudes where the turbosuperchargers weren't really necessary - but operational altitudes increased rapidly as each side sought an advantage and engine performance increased, so by the time the aircraft were actually ready, they weren't suitable, even though they apparently DID meet the performance specifications in the contract. Supercharger production was pretty limited at the time, so including them might have ended up delaying production even further, and so may have also played a role in the decision to forego them.
I'd live to see Israeli versions of Tamiya's new 1/48 Phantom. That would be the F-4E and the Kurnass 2000 modernisation update. Some of the more historically significant Phantoms with different and striking liveries
This kit has steel bearings that sit in designed spots to hold the nose down. No need for additional weight. Until this kit, the Academy -38 was considered the most accurate P-38 in 1/48 scale.
Hi Robbie, A really great video really enjoyable. As an aside Check out the book Operation Vengeance-by Dan Hampton(ex USAF F-16 Wild Weasel pilot) published last year it's an interesting read or listen about the mission to shoot down Yamamoto.
I heard that there was a statement Tamiya made that it would be insensitive to release a Hellcat. But then with them doing the P-38 I'm sure it was a rumour
You did a really nice job on that P-38, keep them coming and thanks for all the tips. I'm keen to see a 1/48 Lockheed Hudson, Bristol Beaufort both Pacific and European war veterans that have long been forgotten about and not easily available today. Also a maybe 1/48 Fairy Gannet would be good or a Sea Venom. Time to get away from the usual stuff the keeps getting repeated over and over by other model companies. 🍻
I'd buy three. Every Hornet kit I have built has been plagued by the same issues. You would think Meng and HobbyBoss would look at the Hasegawa bug to see what didn't work. Rather than keep trying that shit. My HB Growler is back on the bench now and it's like they went out of their way to over engineer the kit.
