Most of my furniture is also thrifted, or belonged to my mother in law, and I got it when she passed. Only 2 things are not painted black, and those are 2 hutches that are quite old that were hers. Both have crystal doors on them. I did install LED lights in them, but that's all I'm doing to them.

I loved every second of this. I can so relate. My house burnt down in January 2003. I LOST EVERYTHING except the clothes on my back and my dog. I almost died in the fire. My dog woke me up and saved me right before the roof collapsed. I passed out from the smoke inhalation. I'm an oil painter and lost my lifes work too. I had to live in my car for a year and finally moved into a place that was awful with a 1960s kitchen and the hideous floor to match. Pea green tub and gross bathroom. But it wasn't a 1993 Mitsubishi eclipse hatch back in winter to live in.
Took me ages to recoup my losses and finally have my uber goth victorian castle I now own. But as a mom of 2 toddlers a year and a half between them, I am with you, my deary! I adore how beyond over it you are. This tour was absolutely the moment, and I think the ugly rug would look fabulous with black walls!

My hearts breaking over your furniture. My mother was an antique dealer all her life and collected unusual and very old furniture and things and bits. My father died and I had to leave our 4000 sq ft house and most of the contents. I could only take about 3 storage lockers full of stuff, the rest was sold for Penny's on the dollars and I gave away a lot of stuff. But a lot remained... I would have gladly given it to someone for free if they came and took it. But the house was in rural Texas. Victorian/Edwardian furniture, plates dishes hanging lamps, tables and shelves galore, glass cabinets, stained glass, ornate frames and artwork, all gone. I posted on Facebook for estate sales but there was so much stuff I was constantly turned down. I even had old leather frames. Should of took those, but it was just me moving. Wish you would have been closer. Baby was precious btw! 🖤🖤🖤 Sorry but I like ornate rugs.😅

I'm still painting all of my wood furniture black, except for 2 hutches that are antiques that belonged to my mother in law. I use gloss black spray paint and primer after I fix any flaws. It looks so nice after painting. The spray paint is quicker than painting with a brush, and dries quicker as well, at least in my experience. It's easier to paint the insides of drawers as well wit the spray paint. I even have a couple pieces I did in "oil slick". I bought some automotive chameleon spray paint and used it lightly over the black. It's a nice effect. (Jan Griffiths).

I'm glad to see the four of you doing the best you can with the resources available to you, and I'm floored that you seem to be handling the shit life's been tossing at you with such grace. :)
Who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to paint the walls white with that fugly carpet? Then again, anything darker and it'd make the place look too tiny and/or dingy. I live in an apartment that the landlord won't let me do anything with, so I've been tinkering with trying to do this place up as best I can with things and styles that bounce well off of the canvas as it were.
To take the edge off of the hall carpet, have you considered laying a red hall rug over it? It's not black, but a black one would make the carpet stand out more. If you can find one, the same shade of red that's already in the carpet, maybe only slightly darker? Someone with more of an eye for this, help me bounce around some ideas?
The living room carpet, no idea. Maybe toss a black rug (or a red one with a black border around it) on it?
There's also the whole thing with rug corners curling up, getting tripped over, having to vacuum under as well as on top of them, etc. Too bad you couldn't find a hardwood-carpet "rug" type of thing anywhere. Do they even make those? Now I'm curious, going to go play with google for a few. 😁
❤❤❤❤ One for each of you since digital hugs aren't exactly a thing yet.

When we moved into our house, we went from a tiny box bedroom flat....we live just outside Glasgow so we had to go on a massive charity shop venture trying to get furniture because flat doesn't translate into house. None of our furniture matched but we had just moved, were skint and just bought what we could. We had furniture of every colour under the sun.....slowly over the past 4 years we have collected matching furniture. We are gamers and scale figure collectors so we wanted all the shelving units to be uniform and all on the same heights etc...we are still not finished (we still have the crimson leather second hand couch we bought when we moved in and it is falling apart) but like you, we could see what we could do with the place. Honestly, I agree with the carpet......my gran had something like that in her house when I was a kid in the 80's....the fireplace is also...questionable.....but, you are so optimistic and can see what can be done which is fabulous. Our bathroom upsets me so so much, it has been in our house since I think the 80's and it looks like it....UGH I wanna tear the whole thing out and put in a new one but, we rent so no can do

I actually like the carpet, if it were all throughout the suitably carpetable areas, against a dark-coloured walls it would go much more nicely, but I definitely don't hate it.

You should paint the walls because just doing that transforms the house. I moved into an apartment that was built in the 70's that the walls were patchy af were some walls were painted a pale yellow and some walls were paint white, I hated it. I fixed the cracks and painted the walls a taupe grey colour and it make the apartment feel warm, cosy and so much better.

I do love old stuff but there is antique and there is what we in Holland call Krokant (and that is not in a positive way, brittle and old). But I think you do have some nice things you can up and really nice plans. I hope you feel at home soon!

Unless you can get a house built to your exact specifications and preferences, no house is truly perfect. I always just try to work with it like you're doing here. That carpet is... unique. If it was patterned in black and grey, it might be nice. Aside from it not being the right fit, you're making do and it's sweet that you've got a support system to help your beautiful family. I had questions about your place in Germany... were you able to get all of your stuff out of it? Is that the stuff you now have in Wellington? I'm hoping so... I personally would be dying if I had stuff scattered around like that (Hello, Taurus here!).

This reminds me so much of being in my first place when my daughter was a newborn. Hard times, everything’s a bit cobbled together but happy times. All the best to you, mr owl and your babies. kind of love the carpet and the light switches! It’s a really interesting place, looking forward to seeing how you make it your own and diy some of the furniture bits!

I am enjoying this house tour more than I should be - it reminds me so much of so many houses here in Ireland! So old and weird 😂 the kitchen in particular! And if you're renting, the decor is usually disgusting! Glad you're finding a way to make it work while you're there, hope you get into a place you're happier in soon!

Lol I think the carpet reminds me of the “Dark Shadows” movie because of the clash of gothic vampiric vs 70s-tactic 😂 you could get some rugs to go over top of the carpet…🤷‍♀️ love your tour and glad y’all are getting settled. I have a lot of Queen Anne furniture myself that I painted. I love some black furniture too! ❤❤❤
Edit: I can relate having had 2 under 2 in diapers and just a little note to say you’re doing great and you’ve got this! The first few years are super hard but eventually they catch up in ages and start doing the same things at the same times. One of mine was also special needs. They’re almost both grown now and I wouldn’t have done it differently given the choice ❤ it’s exhausting but 💯 worth it

I feel you. We moved into the House like 2 years ago, everything is just like this, free/cheap stuff we got from family and friends. Several renovation projects, everything is aestheticly chaotic, but it gets better over time...? I think? slowly. I mean, friends of mine took out loans or are still paying back their furniture, I'd rather have chaotic stuff for now instead tho and replace it slowly bit by bit. Hey, it works. We'll get there. eventually.

I completely agree that carpet is hideous and I always wonder why folks would close up a fire place, it is more cost effective to get the chimney sweep in there for maintenance. Maybe it is for insurance purposes? I hope all gets better soon! Congratulations on motherhood and thrifting!!!🕸🕷🦇🖤

The two little shelf things on either side of the bigger shelves in the bedroom are votive candle holders from a church, or at least that's my best guess. The arch top and cut-out shapes are very common in church architecture.
Ps. They're epic and wish I could find such nice secondhand pieces so cheaply here in Aus.
