That hammerhead corvette scene and the descent of the destroyer on the shield gate felt almost religious and ethereal. the Force, I'll always love Rogue One.
You can see the Hammerhead still attched to the Star Destroyer as it crashes into the shield generator. They never got out, went out fighting to the bitter end.
I guess this scene is based on several real life episode of small Soviet ships ramming US destroyers and cruisers Like when small patrol boat hammered USS Caron in full speed to force it off Soviet coast, and succeeded, even seriously damaged ships weapons and caused a fire
The Hammerhead's impact on the Star Destroyer should have been barely noticeable by the Star Destroyer's personnel. A Star Destroyer is ~1600 meters long, a Hammerhead is ~120 meters long, so the Star Destroyer is ~13 times as long. Cubing this means the Star Destroyer is over two thousand times the mass of the Hammerhead. So if the Hammerhead was moving at ~2000 meters per second, the resulting impact will have the Star Destroyer moving at 1 meter/second. The scene should have been the Hammerhead impacting with the Star Destroyer crew hearing a thump and maybe a small jolt (gravity still worked, so inertial dampening likely still worked). But as the Hammerhead is in the notch with its engines at full, the bridge crew sees their ship approaching the other Star Destroyer and realize that something is wrong.
It was one of my favorite scenes. Everyone on the ground celebrating the arrival of "the cavalry" and the pilot smiling broadly knowing he arrived at the right time to make a difference, for those who didn't even expect help. A pump fist moment.

This battle actually maintained some semblance of military discipline. Squadrons fighting in formation, no stupid jokes or unnecessary fly boy maneuvers. The Empire actually looked dangerous, competent, and inflicted serious losses on the Rebel fleet.
Fun fact: the Battle of Scarif is the reason that the main Rebel base could only field thirty one-man fighter craft against the Death Star at the subsequent Battle of Yavin.
Well, yes, but actually no. We never see it in the film, but the Alliance used a Lukrehulk battleship and several frigates as well as a dozen more fighters and bombers to repeatedly hit the death star's main weapon in an attempt to destroy it. They managed to knock it out of alignment enough that the Death star is forced to go around the gas Giant of Yavin before firing on the rebels.

Boomer Five reporting in. I was boots on the ground in '77, I had NO idea where life was going to take me, but I knew it would involve Star Wars. It did. I met the person I married. Met my best friend. I became an entertainment writer. And we waited 39 YEARS for THIS movie and it was WORTH every minute that we lived to get there. I was sitting with my FAMILY that night in a theater that was on its feet screaming, yelling, crying and losing its mind -- just like we did in1977. To this day it was the FIRST time I was truly terrified of Vader, and it was ALL of us. You have to love Vader using the SSD to its fullest by being highly aggressive. Really does go to show if the two other SSDs had been less cautious and pressed the assault they could have won this.
This wasn’t the SSD, it was the Devastator which Vader had upgraded throughout the years to be more offensive based as opposed to the more outdated versions that inevitably fell during the battle.
We don't know the specific loadouts those ISDs were deployed with, could've been budget versions meant for patrol duty with reduced weaponry and garrison and also inexperienced crew overwhelmed by the sudden appeareance of the entire Rebel fleet.
@@Burstnoktrue I highly doubt anyone in the star destroyers or the shield apparatus would've expected a full out attack on a base full of mostly unimportant plans.

They just did it more effectively than the sequel Trilogy did. Rogue One's basically an attempt to pack in as many references as they could in a 1970s fashion as possible. The rebel fleet coming out of hyper space and ambushing the imperial forces in space was shocking as the imperial officers froze in disbelief. Thanks to a couple good officers they had the presence to react. What a great scene.

This was everything that I could've wanted in Star Wars in 8 minutes worth of screen time. All grit, no bs. A collective front instead of a collage of meaningless hero single shots. I damn near cry at the fact that this level of passion hasn't been replicated in the Disney Era since Rogue One's release. It's been 7 years.
I'd put Andor above this in terms of both writing and passion. I was born at the time of the prequels and my dad watched the OT as it came out in theaters; Andor captured both of us spectacularly, and certainly in no way anything else Disney has made with the exception of this movie. Smaller capital ships like the ghost moving around the flagship trying to shoot down Ties and hopefully reduce some firepower to the Profundity by surrounding it was also great.

This battle is so great and I love how in this battle, the rebels are smart. How Radus thought about pushing one Star destroyer into another so they destroy the shield was so great.
Definitely feels good to see the TIE's being an actual threat once again without needing to have some main character behind the wheel to justify it. While it was still numbers advantage, they actually had legitimate presence in the battle, were rapidly claiming kills even as they lost ships and were posed as a legitimate threat to the Capital ships. But as the Hammerhead is in the notch with its engines at full, the bridge crew sees their ship approaching the other Star Destroyer and realize that something is wrong.

Plotarmor and plotaim.....
Actually when you think about it, you can consider the options of the Admiral in the ISD; 2 ISDs aggresively engage the Rebel fleet or have the Shield gate take the damage for you while awaiting reinforcements. Plus it being a planetary shield also means the rebels would take a long time to bring down the shield

How does it not make scientific sense when there's the existence of tugboats?
Hammerhead corvettes are literally used as tugboats for capital ships. If they have enough engine power in that tiny frame to pull a capital ship (even in zero-g), they defo have enough engine power to push an ISD into another ISD. It also helps that the ISDs in question have been ion torpedo-ed.

Whoever made these scenes definitely didn't have the Disney mentality.
They had a "STAR WARS" mentality.
I mean, I think they had exactly the mentality Disney did. "Make something that makes heavy use of a very very popular IP and lean on the nostalgia". They just did it more effectively than the sequel Trilogy did. Rogue One's basically an attempt to pack in as many references as they could in a 1970s fashion as possible.
It's a great movie, but let's not kid ourselves about what it was. It was a cash grab as well.

Having the strengths of both factions on display imperial capital ships strength and the superior rebel fighters and bombers and the way the 2 Star destroyers are taken out with the superiority of rebel x-wings and y-wings over their imperial counterparts to disable a star destroyer to open it up do a daring move from a hammerhead corvette was some absolutely inspired direction, writing and cinematography.
The rebel fleet coming out of hyper space and ambushing the imperial forces in space was shocking as the imperial officers froze in disbelief. Thanks to a couple good officers they had the presence to react. What a great scene.

Watching this battle in a theater is one I will never forget.
Could have been better if they had bothered to include an opening text crawl.
Rogue One had such superior attention to detail versus the Disney Sequels. The camera framing up only Jyn Erso's hand clutching her kyber crystal while they're waiting to hear if their shuttle codes clear or not for example is such a subtle artistic version of JJ's hamfisted 'uh Rey is going to do a Jedi Mind Trick for reasons.'
The scene at the end with hope still gets me emotional
This movie did a fantastic job of reminding us that Star Wars is about a war and not just individual battles surrounding a few special characters. It also reminded me of when I was a kid and I felt immersed into the universe again. I wanted to join in and be an X-Wing Fighter Pilot. I completely forgot about a lot of the flaws

All grit, no bs. A collective front instead of a collage of meaningless hero single shots.
I damn near cry at the fact that this level of passion hasn't been replicated in the Disney Era since Rogue One's release. It's been 7 years.
Nah that’s not true, what Andor, CW S7 and first 2 seasons of mandalorian?
I'd put Andor above this in terms of both writing and passion. I was born at the time of the prequels and my dad watched the OT as it came out in theaters; Andor captured both of us spectacularly, and certainly in no way anything else Disney has made with the exception of this movie. I'd even say Andor is better than the OT, heretical though it may be to say. Andor and Rogue One, being Star Wars that doesn't treat or expect it's audience to be a child, is what I and so many others have wanted for so long.
The Battle of Scarif is the greatest battle with lots of deaths in the history of Star Wars, IMO. So much courage in defiance of gigantic empire.

What makes this battle the best is that all the rebel ships are doing their work. The Profundity as a flagship was great. I love X-wings doing SEAD(supression of enemy air defense) on the shield gate before Y-wings start their attack run. As the battle continues, remaining X-wings form a flight group and engage Ties among their fleet. Smaller capital ships like the ghost moving around the flagship trying to shoot down Ties and hopefully reduce some firepower to the Profundity by surrounding it was also great.
The fighters really owned this movie, from that one Blue Squadron fighter going on a lone run to knock out the Star Destroyer’s shield generator to the use of old footage from the Original Trilogy to bring Gold and Red Leaders into the film, this space battle is baller

It appears to be homage to the “frigates” from Knights of the Old Republic (game / lore). Very similar shape and form.
I also like the idea that possibly what was once considered the size of a frigate is (or could be) considered merely a corvette at a later time, much as in the modern world how what was long ago considered a cruiser (or light cruiser anyway) weighs about as much as a modern destroyer - as in ships have generally gotten much bigger over time.

After not really getting a chance to witness them in action in Episode 4, seeing Vander/Gold Leader & those Y-Wing bombers get a moment to shine & do a bombing run of the Shield Gate as well as disabling a Star Destroyer on their own just fills me with such joy :)
"No captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy" - Nelson.
The exiting of hyperspace into the battle field... goose bumps hell ya, this was amazing on the big screen in the cinema and so unexpected
5:54 That Hammerhead Corvette changed the course of the entire battle and the galaxy. Such legends :)
This battle is so great and I love how in this battle, the rebels are smart. How Radus thought about pushing one Star destroyer into another so they destroy the shield was so great.
I love @2:49 you can see an X-Wing launch photon torpedoes to bring down the Walker.
Getting to have the pilot cam on the Imperial pilots with that black pilot suit and them being legitimately deadly makes the battle feel so much more tense.
The best 10 minutes of Star Wars space battle in recent years.
This is one of the reasons why Rogue One isn't only defined by the vader scene in the end, one of the best space battles in Star Wars
