This movie was more about the "War" aspect of Star Wars than the "Force" or anything, which makes it amazing for me
If you haven't yet you should go watch the clone wars. There are many episodes mostly focused on the war
@2020Surya S315 oh yea no idea why i did that, edited now
I love how it puts the focus on the "little guys" in the fight. They were not powerful Jedi nor have strong political influence.
The more that Star Wars has focused on Jedi, the worse it has got. Seems backwards, but these films work better when there are less Jedi and very little explanation of them. It forces the scripts to focus on the human element, which is what makes it great and dovetails nicely into war movies, war is hell, and sacrifice.
@@ccricers My favourite episodes are the clone episodes. (see the one with the traitor Jedi and the training planet under occupation) So fucking good.
I wasn’t aware that there were people who disliked the “Don’t choke on your aspirations” line from Vader. To me, it feels like a little bit of Anakin showing through... and it gives me a very “Scar from Lion King” vibe which I always love
Vader is an incredibly dramatic character. Anakin's mannerisms show through that mask frequently and there are plenty of instances of it in Rebels and the comics. In one scene in Rebels, Vader is standing on top of his TIE Advanced as it descends below the surface of a planet. Not only is he flying his starship with the force, his cape is flapping in the wind, except, he's below the surface of a planet and there is no wind. He's using the force to make his cape flap. Because's he's dramatic and all about theatrics. Because he's Anakin Skywalker.
@@shredforceone Couldn't be truer. It's probably the only reason Anakin lived in Vader. Why he could come back. Not to mention Ahsoka and his encounters in Rebels. All feeding to Anakin overcoming the mask that was Vader and stopping Palpatine.
Vader was dropping one liners left and right even in the OT
@@gxact And then having a son, having someone he could manage to love again, allowed Anakin to fully come through and destroy both Palpatine and Vader
That "scar from lion king" vibe is funny when you remember that Vader's voice is also Mufasa's
"There's a problem on the horizon, there is no horizon" is the same energy as "in terms of money, we have no money"
You're absolutely right
Do you find it risible? When I mention my friend, Biggus Dickus?

In Empire the ship that saves Han and Luke on Hoth is called ‘Rogue Two’ however in this film they say “Rogue One? There is no Rogue One”. I like to think that after the stuff on Scarif, when they were trying to think of a callsign for those Hoth ships, they chose to honour the crew of Rogue One by naming a squad after them but not have a replacement ‘Rogue One’. Just something that makes me happy to think about
They made them a squadron
It's actually a nod to/reference to the squadron Luke Skywalker would be given command of not that long after the Battle of Yavin. Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles would form Rogue Squadron, a group of rebel Pilots who would become among the elite of the Rebel Starfighter Corp. On Hoth, the pilot who finds Han and Luke is Zev, who's call sign is Rogue Two, much like Luke's in the Battle of Yavin was Red 5. Luke himself was Rogue Leader/Rogue One, as he was the squadron commander.
After The battle of Hoth, Wedge would become the new leader of Rogue Squadron, as Luke would go on to further his Jedi studies and found the New Jedi Order. Here in this movie, I think it's Gareth's way of giving a nod to the fans, because Rogue Squadron in the EU were well known for their exploits both in the air and on the ground in aiding the Rebel Alliance, alongside other squadrons like Wraith Squadron. So he created the idea that they started off with Jyn and Cassian on Scarif.
@@TechLeafRanger oh cool, that’s pretty interesting thank you!
@@dandaropa You're welcome. star Wars always has been one of my all time favorite franchises, thanks to my dad and mom. I grew up on the original VHS's of it, before the special cuts, and I spent a lot of time dreaming about being an X-Wing pilot. So stuff related to all the spacecraft and vehicle battles, I dive into whenever I can. Honestly, that's part of what i love most about this movie, is the entire Battle of Scarif. It's amazing from start to finish.
@@TechLeafRanger Completely agreed, this film is incredible the whole way through, but the moment they leave for Scarif it just amps up to a whole new level right up until the credits. Probably my favourite Star Wars film ever, definitely the best non-OT one
wait.. some people didn’t absolutely love the hallway scene? how is that possible
That honestly puzzles me.
Some people just really don’t like popular things. The more popular something is, the worse/dumber it must be. Honestly I’m the same way about a lot of things (not the vader scene holy shit that lighting effect was mind blowing) and so I like watching this channel to keep me from being too cynical about things
@@brilliantlysplendid Yeah, get those hipsters out of here.
I guess some people are just empty inside.
It’s not so much about being a hipster, i.e. hating things because they are/became popular, it’s more like you look at really popular things like pop music (I don’t like that) and then popular youtube channels (I generally haven’t enjoyed those) and there is a trend that makes you think that popular things must be for people who aren’t yourself. Also, there’s something of a desire to be different. There are 7 billion people on this earth and you want to be someone who is unique, so you’re not allowed to like popular things, since that would rope you in with the popular crowd. It surely makes no sense, since as I said before, there are 7 billion people so you’re going to have a lot in common with SOMEONE, but I digress
Before watching, I'm guessing the Vader hallway scene gets at least an additional twenty wins. Just 'cause.
Better make that 50 wins...
HerHollyness Your comment gets twenty wins alone.
oh my sweet summer child......
HerHollyness that scene was freaking amazing but one thing bugs me why couldnt vader use the force on that ship and prevent the rebels from escaping?
HerHollyness he passed out on the button.
Vader’s depiction in this film is spot on. People saying the “take care not to choke” line is out of character, do you forget “apology accepted, Captain Needa”, “we would be honoured if you would join us”, or “the emperor is not as forgiving as I am”? Vader has always had a twisted sense of humour especially when it comes to his own violent behaviour.
As for him holding his breath or turning off his life support in the hallway, he did literally the exact same thing in Empire twice during the fight with Luke, to ambush or frighten him.
For all the reeing and soiling of nappies “purists” do whenever some new Star Wars thing gets released, it really feels like they didn’t watch the original trilogy at all.

I can honestly say that rogue one is my absolute favorite Star Wars movie. It’s not about crazy aliens or epic lightsaber duels. It’s about people. It’s about war. It’s about the ideologies that drive the empire and the rebellion. It shows the darkness within the light and the light within the darkness. It shows everything that we all knew was there but never got to see. Because of this it is (in my opinion) the best Star Wars movie.
Chris Jackson my 2nd fav
I do not disagree at all, but half the reason this movie is so fantastic is BECAUSE of all the other movies, sometimes I feel like it's hard to really compare the different star wars movies cause for the most part you can't have one without the other, they've all built off each other into something that shaped the century
For me if say fourth as for me all the OT are flawless, then revenge of the sith and the this, but to be honest it is really hard to decide which if all of these i like best.
For me it's right behind the greatest Star Wars movie, The Empire StrikesBack. Ever since I saw it, I have said that Rogue One is the Star Wars movie, for those of us who grew up on the Original Trilogy, deserved.
I respect your opinion. And glad to see others loving this dark but grandiose war movie.
Chris Jackson I agree!!! Same here
I'm glad im not the only one who lost their shit during the Vader Sequence.
RedArmyRockstar everyone did
Everyone apart from attention seeking critics did! Some evidence to how much of a badass Vader was.
this is why i dont listen to critics or anyone else for that mater i was giggling like a little school boy when that saber lit up. oh and loved batman v superman and the suicide squad all were marvelous.
#1. Re-Watched the Darth Vader Part of this video 13 times.
#2. The Villain Fans dreamed About........ (Showing my age) I (Mostly) Had Nightmares about Vader!
(SW: 5 Years old. Empire: 8 Years old. Jedi: 11 Years old.)
#3. If that scene or something like it (back in the day) was in the Original Trilogy, those movies would have been R-Rated.
However, #4. We 1970s and 80s' kids to teenagers Imaged Vader (A lost art with most kids today) doing a "Rogue One" Style Massacre of rebel solders at Echo Base on Hoth (Empire). So........ 36 or 37 years later, our Imaginations and Nightmares of Darth Vader ARE Vindicated!
PS.......Long live Kojima's Metal Gear! #%%#$$69 Konami!
My brother and I agreed it was our favorite part of this already spectacular movie.
Honestly Rogue One is up there with one of my favourites. And that Vader scene is just the greatest thing I've ever seen.
Disney PC quota is always given to minorities.
Chirrut might be gay for no reason? So whenever Asians make friends they must be gay? WTF?
Lando Calrissian is Pansexual now?
Interracial relationship must be between nonwhites only? Finn and Rey can't get together, he must get distracted away from it with stupid Rose Tico who Disney cared so little about, they got a random minor actress from CollegeHumor with no experience in film.
Oh, and Asian Rose Tico has to shoulder the Fat Quota.
My personal ranking is that it's the 2nd best Star Wars
I think that Rogue One is the best because its the only movie I ever got lost in and had such an obvious ending catch me by surprise. TBF I was only an infant for Empire's initial release.
KitKatHD the original trilogy as well as revenge of the with was better than rogue one and I might even say force awakens was better but still it’s a good Star Wars movie

This is without a doubt my favorite Star Wars movie. The last 10 minutes alone are some of the best Star Wars there is. That scene where Vader’s Star destroyer comes out of hyperspace and collided with the escaping rebel ships was amazing. The Death Star appearing on the horizon was beautiful. And then, of course, my favorite scene in all Star Wars. Truly amazing movie.

People hated the Vader Hallway scene?
I... don't understand. I, like you Cinemawins, was blown away by that scene. I felt goosebumps and giddy. That was the VADER we all wanted, no NEEDED, to see.
I left the theater after my first viewing and threw ANH in my player just to continue the experience. ANH's opening crawl read like it was brand spanking new. You could place the scenes in R1 against the lines of the crawl, and it felt right. It was so good.
SleeplessRonin I remember my jaw dropping gasping and having a HUGE shit eating grin on my face.
How the hell could anyone hate it??? It's everything I ever wanted to see from Vader, I personally never really thought Vader was that great of a villain I always felt it was more his voice & his look that made him so iconic. But after watching the hallway scene I would definitely say he's one of the greatest! THAT was the Vader I wanted to see, the Vader in his prime & it went above & beyond my expectations!
If you want more, just read the Vader 2016 comics. Thank me later.
Yes, the Darth Vader hallway sceme was the best Darth Vader scene of all time, pure hate and pure evil.
The scene was really badass and cool to watch but kind of tonally dissonant.
It felt a bit like fan service at the expense of the tone and story of this film. I didn't hate it but it was bit weird hearing people cheer a villain slaughtering good guys after what was supposed to be the downbeat emotional climax of the film.
That Darth Vader "choke on your aspirations" line should have been a clear indication to Vader that his children were alive; because it's a total dad joke.
yeah, but it's also very similar to his sense of humor in TCW.
well, being named darth VADER (witch is basicly ditch for father) he can always make dad jokes

7:47 What I like is how they only use the Death Star to destroy the city, and later to destroy the base to try and make sure that they didn't get away with the plans, as it shows some of it's power to the galaxy, so it gives more meaning when Tarkin says, "I think it's time to show the full power of this station." in A New Hope.
I forget where I saw it but I think it's only at 2% power for these shots.
@@callmeshaggy5166 Damn.
I wonder at the specified order of _"...single reactor ignition..."_
Does this mean the activation of a single high-impulse reactor tied into the superlaser...
...or does it mean "Forget about any of the high-impulse systems. Power up the superlaser with energy drawn from just the main reactor core."
Because 2% implies they didn't crack open the high-octane stuff. They just cranked off a shot using the starter battery, as it were.
@@BogeyTheBear I'm guessing it means the Death Star needs multiple reactors powering the superlaser for it to have enough energy to blow up a planet, while if you only use one of the reactors it just blows up a part of the planet's surface.
@@octodaddy877 Yes-- but what was that reactor? Just one of the many high-impulse reactors that are dedicated to powering the weapon? Rogue One being Halo Reach as a Star Wars movie is the greatest description of this movie. This movie is beautiful.

In terms of horizon, we have no horizon.
The novelization of this movie is honestly... amazing. The deaths of the heroes are made just... a hundred times more heartbreaking since they all take place from a purely internal point of view. K-2SO calculating his way through that entire fight, just working at every second to give Cassian and Jin the best chance of success that he could... and Chirrut... repeating his mantra within his head as he makes his sacrifice, over and over again as a rhythmic punctuation of what he is doing, with no sense of visuals to what is going on, because the visual is not part of his personal experience. - Having the Death Star be upside down
- The use of silence when the Death Star fires on Jedha
- Saw Gerrera's breathing sound like Vader
- Vader's/Vader's (not super) Star Destroyer's entrance after the Battle over Scarif
- Respecting the prequels (using the same actors for Mon Mothma and Bale Organa, using Mustafar and most likely Coruscant etc.)
- Using a London underground/tube station as the set in Scarif (though irrelevant to the film, it was reminiscent of the money-saving aspect of A New Hope's production)
- Blue Milk

There is no air in space, which means that Vader made his cape fly for the sheer drama
He's a Skywalker. Those reckless idiot's are the biggest drama queens in the galaxy.

I had no issues with CGI Tarkin as Peter Cushing's original portrayal was (intentionally) already unsettling to start with.
And arguably, if there was one character in all of Star Wars (at least, before the Marketing Trilogy) that could do with being a little more unsettling, it would be Tarkin.
Agreed. Also. when i first saw the movie in I believe 2016 was, when it came out, i lost my shit when we first saw him because i wasn't really aware that you could just cgi faces (i was 15 then) and thought it looked really good. Only after, when I learned that it was cgi and some people thought it looked weird, i realized that it looked weird at times. So, what i'm trying to say is, even if it's not perfect, it really doesn't ruin the movie experience, at least the first time around.
People always focus on the CGI, but I think Guy Henry's mocap and voice work was great!
I thought the CGI Tarkin worked better than the CGI Leia. Mostly because they kept Tarkin in the shadows. Your brain knew something was off but couldn't pinpoint it. Leia fully bathed in light and you can pinpoint it clearly.
@@Banzai51 I don't really see anything wrong. Then again I'm not a details guy. The only thing that stuck out was the shiny look of his forehead. For some reason that made it look like a game cutscene. Too smooth.

I'm mean, fucking seriously, that Vader hallway scene was awesome! And there are people who say they hate it? Fuck off. That's not even an optional opinion from my perspective.
i bet the people that hated that scene are fucking purists who never enjoy anything new and just stick to the original like its the best thing ever... looking back at the OT it had some cringy stuff
I totally agree. It's CLEAR who vader was and that he didnt fuck around when it came to killing rebels and Jedi. To FINALLY see that on the big screen in such a way was amaZing. They want to hate it just to hate it. They have no real reason.
If you are a fan of Star Wars, than you'll praise the Vader scene.
Most of the fans who said they hate it, are just original Trilogy fans, who can't go open minded into new SW films. Since they are not the ORIGINALS.
I love the Vader scene, as it shows us the real lord Vader!

it's also the place he thought Padme had betrayed him and where he thought he had killed her, a place where Anak in died and Vader was born. a place where his painful past fills him with hate and anger and the Darkside can flow freely within him.
Coming back after finishing Andor, still a masterpiece
Andor and Rouge One are 2 of the best I think of all the movies and shows. Short of Empire Strikes Back.
My dad, who was about 8 years old when he saw the original Star Wars, said that seeing Rogue One in theaters gave him the closest experience to watching the original for the first time since he saw Star Wars in theaters

I was 3 1/2 when I saw it in early 78 (it didn't come out til much later in New Zealand). When I walked out of seeing Rogue One I said the same thing, the closest experience to what I remember from so long ago.
when it comes to dark tones, I am reminded of a quote I saw once: "Upon the background of a black velvet, a diamond sparkles more brilliantly" it sums up my feelings of rogue one: It sets up the stakes and hopelessness to give weight and shine to the rest of the series
Yeah exactly
Thats beautiful! Where did you find that quote?
@@shahshah1 funny enough, that came from an LDS (Mormon) teaching manual
This was an incredible star wars movie. It was dirty, gritty and visceral. The fact that there was no miraculous escape made it that much more deeply inspiring. I love the way that they conveyed a sense of cold and mercilessness tactics perpetrated by both the opposing sides of the conflict. It was a stand-alone, which is fitting because it works beautifully without the need to use a sequel as a proverbial crutch.
'not leave the theater all weepy and depressed' excuse you, this movie made me cry! No joke, watching each member slowly die freaking killed me. The only one that didn't really effect me was the pilot. Baze holding Chirrut as he died, his clear sorrow over the loss of someone he CLEARLY loved, it hurt. K-2SO sacrificing himself after only JUST having accepted Jyn as a FRIEND made my eyes BURN and my throat close up, and then Jyn and Cassian staring out at the wave of destruction headed towards them, then collapsing in an embrace, accepting their deaths, knowing that they did all they could and it was now in the hands of the rest of the resistance... I was in genuine tears. I won't lie, I absolutely love this movie, as much as I love The Force Awakens, as much as I love Revenge of the Sith. Any film that can genuinely move me to tears is exceptional in my book.
Also, K-2SO was my favorite non-human character, and my favorite human is a tie between Cassian (as you pointed out, he shows a side of the rebels we've NEVER seen before, something that's never even been HINTED at in the films, by outright killing the guy with one arm, yet he's still a genuinely likable character) and Chirrut.
Frankly, you're the most decent commenter I've ever read. A fellow hopeless romantic, so that makes me biased. But I don't care. Force be with you, sister.
Each Rogue One squad member dying one by one hurt me and still hurts just as much when I rewatch it. I was crying. Rogue One without the Vader scene was a 10/10. This movie went way beyond my expectations.
The « are we blind ? Deploy the garrison » is soo perfectly shouted by Mendelsohn. It should have been a win.
I find myself repeating this line randomly throughout the day 😂😂
I also really liked this line as a kid because my name is Garrison and it made me so happy to hear my name in a Star Wars movie
i was watching a youtube clip of that scene with subs on and found my new favorite line "Are we blind? Deploy the garbage can"
I always liked Vader in the OT but I never found him to be particularly threatening. That hallway scene. As soon as the lightsabre turned on, I was like, "Oh. Shit."
Shogun_Turnip Yup.
He never seemed that threatening to you in the original films? Seriously? Within the first 10-minutes of him appearing on screen, he lifts a man into the air with one hand and crushes his throat! He uses the force to strangle another man! In EMPIRE, he chokes several men to death using the force, and he stops blaster bolts with his hand and uses the force to snatch Han's weapon away from him!
He wasn't flashy, but he was still pretty damn threatening.
Darren Z I think he meant that the special effects back then were limited, so it was hard to see him as powerful.
To be fair, I could've worded that better. I meant to say that he was threatening, I just think that the way the hallway scene was filmed kind of felt like it put me in the rebels shoes. It's a fairly subtle difference, but if I was a rebel in ANH, if I saw Vader I'd probably be like, "It's Vader! Run!". Whereas Rogue One's is like "Oh God! I'm going to die! Please Help!"
Hope that clears things up a bit.
Travis Donald Stanley I'm pretty sure they did know it was Vader, seeing as he is kinda their Enemies Apprentice, and is the one who the Emperor sends to do the dirty work.

Honestly, Rogue One is my FAVORITE Star Wars movie. It’s my dad’s favorite too. It just never gets old
Favorite movie of mine and my dsd too! It is the most adult film of all of star wars in my opinion and I think it is why my dad likes it too. Cassian Andor killing his terrified friend in the ally is the most realistic and dark moment in Star Wars. I know there are other dark scenes but here you have a innocent human character killed on camera. In contrast to Anakin killing the children off camera.

@IAN HEINE K2SO and IG-11 are the best droids in the franchise :(
I really liked this movie. And it's because it reminded me of Halo Reach. "I know we're losing, I want to know if we've lost." as Kat puts it can make for some excellent stories, in my opinion. That desperation, and the fact that characters have to (sometimes literally) pick a hill to die on. When death is certain, what do you do with what you have left? And when the answer is "go down fighting," you can get movie magic.
Also, that bleakness was the entire point of this film. Note how the only lightsaber is red. No Jedi coming to the rescue with space magic. They have to make do with what's available.
And Vader in the hallway is superb. Shows exactly why he was the most feared man in the galaxy. He was the face of the Empire, Palpatine's chief enforcer. Carved through those rebel soldiers like they were a minor annoyance.
I really don’t see why people did not like this movie.

Rogue one: second favorite movie is SW
5/5 graphics

@truongtu0191 I didn't.
Number of reasons. For one there isn't that much happening. It's an incredibly long story that largely boils down to "That's why the deathsstar could be taken down like that". Then some of the CG stuff, like Tarkin and Leia. Then some of the character undermining. Leia got pretty much all of the credit for stealing the death star plans, yet she just sat on the ship and had one of the guys who actually stole them hand her a thingy with the plans on it. Same with Tarkin. He was portrayed as the guy who orchestrated the death star in the first place, but now we learn that he merely pinched the idea from some other imperial admiral. And Darth Vader was on the ship behind the tantive IV, watching it leave, yet Leia just five minutes later tried to tell him that she is on a peaceful mission and a part of the galactic senate, when Vader just saw her ship taking off from with the death star plans inside, yet he doesn't call her out on it. The movie basically makes a lot of the original characters seem way less impressive than they were, and a lot of people didn't like that.
People dislike it because the first chunk of the movie jumps to fifty planets and is alright movie.
People love the movie because of everything after they get to scariff
@@TheRoboticLog A lot of the reason you stated is part of the character's motive, I could try to explain it to you but there is other sources that can do much better job. "Well done! You're a Rebel, now!"
I really have to agree. Star wars may be my favorite set of movies/shows/books/games, but it always makes me so sad to see people get so angry and furious over it. TFA was probably the laziest written and bland out of the movies (imo) but I still enjoyed it.
Watching any of his videos is a nice break from the chaos of the internet.
"Affected" is the perfect word for it. So many people just pretending not to enjoy anything because it's "cool" to be unimpressed.
Where's the fun in sitting back with a sneer on your face, resolutely quashing any positive feelings you have in order to gain the thin approval of people who don't care about you?
I honestly think that hating on the new Star Wars films is starting to become a trend or something. One thing is "not liking as much" which I get, considering that running away from nostalgia is pretty darn hard. However, there's that and there's absolutely hating the films without any constructive criticism, and that fact which you said about critics hating the Vader scene absolutely baffles me. I still get goosebumps every time that light saber lights up, and it's the closest the Star Wars films have ever got to be an actual horror film. Honestly I think this is just what "cool guys do" nowadays, hate on because it's funny. This is why we need more channels like you, to see everything more on the bright side!
Ignacio Correas the hate on TFA is just ridiculous. It shows it's plot through its visuals. From Rey's introduction scene, without saying much, I get exactly what she's about.
While I don't hate TFA, I do see a lot of problems with it, the sory elements are way to similar to A new Hope, Rey is a bit of a Mary Sue, Leia huging Rey instaed of Chewie and other things. But still while watching it I had my fangirl moments and all things considert a good time I never loved the movie and I never started hating it with the backlash.
I liked Rouge One a great deal more actually, it is my favorite Star Wars movie since Jedi, but still the Characters are not very well flashed out ( and there are so many of them to get to know in just one movie). But I loved K2SO and I think Alan Tudyk did a brilliant job.
All in all I can see why people would dislike either movie.
Ignacio Correas f
Well, the thing about TFA is that, as cool as it is, it does commit some serious sins, of which copying the ANH material is by far the biggest. It made the movie too predictable.
The second biggest sin is that the big bad guy isn't very big and bad due to some unforeseen happenstances (being mentally weak, getting injured). We measure the heroism and the struggle of the protagonist by the power of the antagonist and the terror he causes. In the end all we know is that Kylo was unlucky and is a crybaby, while Rey didn't really get tested. So they were both weak, that's not very exciting in the final battle of a movie. Yes, there's also the First Order with their big fuck off space gun, but there's a problem with that - Rey had little to no control over her destiny, as I'll explain in a moment.
By far the biggest heroes in the movie are Finn and Han Solo. Han faces Kylo, risking his life and testing his emotional strength, because he thinks Leia might be right, which gives him hope and courage. Finn fears the First order with every fiber of his body, but he decides to quit running and picks up the sword against all odds because of his beliefs. Now that's a strong man!
The third sin is that Rey is inconsistent, partially because her motives are unclear. On Takodana she tries to convince Finn to stay and fight, then after seeing visions she says to Maz "I don't want any part of this". So she wants Finn - who wants to run from the war - to be a hero, but she wants to run from her destiny herself? Uh-huh Rey, you fail, sit down. After that, most things that happen to her are a result of the plot moving forward, her decisions are largely irrelevant. Then Han dies, and somewhere out there there's Luke, but why would Rey care? Didn't she want to escape the whole thing and go back to Jakku? What happened to that? So after the whole debacle her motives don't make sense, and it remains unexplained.
Now, I know that the fourth sin is very controversial. Some people say that Rey is too skilled, others say that it was very much the same with young Luke Skywalker. I'm torn on the issue. I can live with it, but I think her abilities could've been made more believable. Ah whatever, it's fine. Lets say both Luke and Rey are too skilled, I'm ok with that :) It's also the reason why I'm convinced that Rey is Luke's daughter. She has to be, her powers don't make sense otherwise. I just would've liked it if her powers got more acknowledgement in the movie. If I was Rey's companion I'd constantly be wondering who the fuck she is and why she can do all these things.
The fifth sin is absolutely undeniable: Captain Phasma should be imposing, but she's a laughing stock. Why does she lower the shields? She should just refuse and risk getting killed. This was so bad, terrible, unacceptable. I'm removing one whole point out of ten from my personal rating just because of that one scene.
Now, TFA does some things absolutely right. As in many other SW movies, the robot unit - BB-8 - almost steals the show. It's my favorite character. General Hux was my second favorite. It's amazing how well he played the villain. The Millennium Falcon chasing scene was incredible, one of my favorites. And the opening scene with Kylo and the stormtroopers, just superb. Han Solo meeting Leia, loved it. The big fuck off planet destruction scene followed by Hux's speech was mostly how I would envision it. I could go on, but I'm too lazy right now. It's a great movie, it just commits some big sins, that's all.
I hate TFA with passion. There is not a single original bit in it. 60% of it is A New Hope ripoff, 40% of it is elements outright stolen from Legends, just named differently or in a slightly different coat of paint, including the characters, which happen to unfortunetly be flattened - they took rich and complex characters from Legends and made them Mary Sues or completly two-dimensional tropes. When I left the theater I thought "I've seen all of this already".
Sure, it was visually impressive, but we don't watch movies for visuals alone, right?
On the other hand, Rogue One has to be one of my favourites.

This is legitimately my favourite Star Wars film. It demonstrates the main themes of the Stars Wars rebellion, hope and the willingness to give everything for the greater cause, and really shows us the individual sacrifices required for the macro-level battles we see in the Original Trilogy and humanizes the rebellion and their sacrifices. Incredible work.
One of the subtexts I really dig in this movie is the clash between Krennic and Tarkin.
Krennic has a rougher accent, maybe a speech impediment (he tends to slur his S's), and loses his composure fighting to prove himself.
Versus Tarkin's patrician, pointed Received Pronunciation diction, and unflappable imperious attitude.
Even in the Imperial elite, there's a hint of classism.
I can add to that, since its been said that the British accents in Star Wars are 'Coreward' accents, common to the upper class populations of the Core worlds and the more American sounding accents are 'Rimwards' more asocciated with the outer rim. If Krennic was from an outer rim world, then he's had that going against him too and he's done everything to remake himself in the image of Coreward high society, especially since the Empire places such a strong emphasis on the Core Worlds as the cradle of High Human Culture
you both enlightened my mind !
This is also something that has been mentioned in Star Wars side-media. The Novel "Thrawn" by Timothy Zahn is about the titular non-human character and his rise to the rank of Grand-Admiral in the Imperial Fleet. All throughout the novel you can see how the empire acts around people from the outer rim and non-humans. I can only recommend reading it.
Ohhhh but I do know about Thrawn ! Discovered in the mobile game, but immediately kept my interest so i read all I cold about him ;).
Also some other characters I explored thx to that : Nihilus and the Sith triumvirat. Lore is so deep and I'm in it.
Good point. I don't know if it was good luck or good casting that Ben Mendelsohn is Australian , an "outer rim" territory of the British Empire. The S's thing is just his natural speech
Rogue One made me feel like I was 7 years old watching Star Wars for the first time. Loved it, especially badass Vader at the end.
How can people say that Rogue One doesn't work as a standalone film? It definitely does! It has a firm and solid dramatical structure and it doesn't present any important questions that are left unanswered at the end.
That last statement is false. It's clearly set up like a middle movie... the ending is less an ending and more of a "to be continued..."
@@Richard_Nickerson I believe the point was that the remaining answers have already been given.
It us as a complete movie as could have been made with the story.

When Darth Vader's lightsaber turned on in the hallway, it felt like I was there and I was a Rebel about to get killed. Such a great sequence. I didn't know critics hated it...
Wait. People hated that scene?
KitAkira1989 They probably criticized it for causing a "discrepancy" with how slow and stiff he is in Episode IV, disregarding that he gets just as mobile in V and VI and was probably away from his bacta tank for weeks and tired from interrogating Leia by the time he confronted Obi-Wan.
There's also the fact that you have to fight a Jedi Master much differently than a bunch of soldiers or an undertrained Jedi.
I remember getting goosebumps when his saber turned on. I feel the same way as the narrator.
Luigiofthegods
That and what CinemaWins has said about that encounter in previous videos... it's not about who's better with a light saber, it's about toying with your adversary.
Obi-Wan doesn't go all out, because he's just creating a distraction for Luke and uses the opportunity to become a Force ghost, which is definitely a better existence for his purposes for the plot at that point (both realistically and from a film-making standpoint).
Vader lost the last battle he had against Obi-Wan, so maybe it's caution despite Kenobi's age and appearance... Obi-Wan was thought to be dead, so his being alive came as a surprise and shows Vader his ability to survive.
Or maybe he's just being a proper Sith and toying with his adversary like a cat plays with a mouse before killing it.
Two years later, but heres a neat little detail :
At the 12:52 mark when then star destroyers are colliding, you can see air leaking out of the ship on the left as the outer hull is being crushed.
It's actually the ship on the right as the Hammerhead takes off their bridge.

This is the first time I feel the films have properly visually represented the way Vader’s combat style is verbally described in all the various books. The shadowy specter of death, not the nimble young warrior he once was, but rather an impregnable, unstoppable tank.
Rogue One is my second favourite Star Wars film because it feels so much darker than the others, and gives me Halo Reach vibes because it's shows us that even the whole protagonist cast can be killed off and still win in a way
My daughter and I sat spellbound throughout the entire movie, trying desperately to piece the little nuggets together and see where they fit in the OT. Boy, we were not disappointed. With an attitude like that, Dylan's got a great head start on leading a forgettable life.
Harrison Mcarthur absolutely agree. In the book Lords of the Sith, there's a bit where Vader boards a ship operated by the Twi'lek resistance and I remember reading it and thinking "too bad we don't have a movie version of this." Then of course Rogue One gave us that. I mean, when Vader closes to melee range, that first brutal overhead cleave almost makes me flinch myself. Then it's a shame you evidently lack both.

The reason this is my favorite of all the Star Wars movies is bc it's so dark and gritty that it makes you scared of the Empire again. Maybe they were still a little scary in 5, but by the time 6 rolls around I got kind of used to the good guys winning. Enough so that I honestly forgot that in 4, the rebels are the underdogs, about to be crushed under the boot of the Empire. Between the hallway scene, the AT-ACT appearing through the smoke on the beach, and Cassian having to shoot his friend to avoid giving away intel, we're immediately confronted with the scariest Empire we've seen yet. That's why I love this movie. Also, whoever decided to give Vader a choking pun and an entire mini-horror film at the end deserves a huge raise.
I remember as a high school student standing in line at the theatre to watch the original release of episode 4 A New Hope. We’d not seen anything like it before. It was an experience I’ll never forget. It was just about all everyone was talking about. I personally felt that Rogue One fit almost perfectly. I also agree the hallway scene was OUTSTANDING.
Yet this is still a bad movie.
@@andymiller6661 you’re a bad viewer
@@longrangeirons2524 Nope.
I've seen that guy before, he comments that under a bunch of Rogue One videos
LIAR Star Wars wasn't called A New Hope. Only weak minded morons brain washed by Lucas call it that.
The final act of this movie was just so devastating. I walked out of the cinema in a daze of complete... I don’t know what. The deaths were so well executed. Especially Body’s, it was nothing big or massive, he didn’t sacrifice himself, he wasn’t fighting a major part of the battle. His death was a simple grenade, a consequence of the fight. It was amazing.
Ó Cúin speaking of devastating,
Seeing Vader's Star Destroyer come out of hyperspace when everyone's trying to run, seeing that one transport crash and the SD just shrugs it then proceeds to decimate the rest of the fleet is very welcome depiction of the true might of a star destroyer and the best depiction of its power. How a star destroyer should be.
Darius Dudley II Yeah, this movie felt like a very real look at Star Wars, things go badly sometimes and people die. And for most people in the galaxy, and many in the fights in which they happen, it just doesn’t matter. It’s so... real.
Ó Cúin He was kinda fighting a major part, as it was up to not only Jyn and Cassian but to him as well to deliver the plans to the rebel fleet. His death signifies that not most but ALL of the Rebels that came with them will die on the planet anyway.
Andree Tungcab Hmm, maybe, but I always assumed that because his death didn’t seem to affect the mission (from what we saw) in a massive way, he wasn’t playing a major part at that point.

I really like this Channel. Sometimes it is hard nowadays to simply enjoy a movie because everyone on the Internet seems to tell you you‘re not allowed to. This channel just says that you should enjoy whatever you want to. Thanks for that!
I loved the darth Vader ending scene just because it showed how dedicated those rebels were even though they knew he was a sith and had probably heard stories they still fought that was just cool I also loved the whole ragtag image of the rebels throughout the scarif raid
william oerther it's basically a perfect scene. The ultimate power of Vader and the determination of simple brave soldiers.
Yeah one of my favorite scenes. Also if you watch the scene in double speed the music is the imperial march so that's pretty cool
The thing is, not many ordinary people knew he was a Sith. They just knew him as an agent of the Emperor. So that must have been FAR more terrifying than if they had known what he could do.
People didn’t like the first Vader scene? It’s absolutely brilliant. The setting is amazing visually, his whole persona is so intimidating and the one liner is just… it works somehow.
Honestly, the Vader scene put fear of him back in me
YES 100% this, knowing how bad ass Vader was during the original trilogy was good enough but getting to see him, do his thing in all it's glory while looking like himelf again Vader in a crisp and brutal way against mere foot soldiers from their perspective just made it such an enjoyable scene
It shows how well he's adapted to the suit. His demeanor is a calm fury. His saber swings effortlessly in one hand while using the Force in the other. Gone is the grace and speed of the young Jedi Anakin. Now driven forward by pain and hate.
Well put, hkartog01.
That was the whole point of it. Going from Ep. 3 to Ep. 4, doesn't show why the Rebels fear him. That scene showed why, and it was great fan service.
When I came back from watching Rogue One at the cinema, my daughter, who was three at the time, asked me if Darth Vader was scary. I thought about the hallway scene and of those poor rebels. Yes, yes he was
Be careful not to choke on your aspirations. I love Vader in this movie and I just absolutely LOVE this channel.
I didnt grow up watching star wars and had never been interested. Saw rogue one on the off chance and it blew my mind, ended up watching all the films. so rogue one began the whole star wars thing for me. none of the other movies in the star wars franchise interested me in the same way this one did and it is thanks to this movie that i even got to watch the all the rest of it
never underestimate the power of a sequel, good or bad! it opens up whole worlds.
Rogue One is the only Star Wars movie I consider good. The rest are bland, over the top and poorly shot with mediocre special effects and relatively goofy (even for its time, the original SW movies had shit special effects minus some scenes like the battle of Hoth.)
Everything about Rogue One was meticulously created and shot, the audio was great, the visuals were great, the story was gritty and showed a dark side of the rebellion that had to exist. I almost took Star Wars from fantasy to pure sci-fi, something that I always felt would be necessary.
Which is why I think a lot of people hate it. It's not charming in the same sense as the original SW movies.
I am so glad that there are people who think exactly the same as I do.
DavidMN, you can´t judge the original trilogy´s SFX from today´s perspective. Back in the days they were jaw dropping and the best visual effects that anyone had ever seen. I know, because I already was alive back then. So you better shut the fuck up, young and foolish padawan.
Back in the day the original trilogy SFX weren't even good. Take a look at 2001 a Space Odyssey buddy, you know, that movie with amazing SFX from 1968? Before the lunar landings? Yet still one of the most realistic space films ever? Get fucked fanboy.
Rogue One was a prequel not a sequel, and yes there is a difference. Actually, Rogue One is more of a prologue than a prequel as Ep4 starts immediately after it ends, give or take a couple of hours.
I’m surprised you didn’t win the “stardust” callback. Works as a double entendre, tells the truth about the Death Star while showing how much Galen cares for Jyn.
When he said "enjoyed seeing the 1984 version of Star Wars eluded to in episode IV..." it took me 2 rewinds to finally realize what he meant. Because at first I kept saying to myself "wtf is he talking about, episode IV is from 1977, not 1984 - what is he talking about?!?" Until I finally realized he meant/was referencing "1984" as in not the year of the movie, but as in the "1984 novel, totalitarian government, big brother is watching you/no freedom" type of political atmosphere living under the yolk of tyranny of the Empire and not a reference to the year of the movie.
....yep
Gary Lupinacci Not too bright then, are you Gary.
Uhm er uh huh?? I don't have enough brain cells for this
I was that way way too on my first viewing of this video but still i see where the similarities are
Everyone at the end of The Force Awakens: "Wow" Kylo ren killed a bunch of people and stopped a blast with the force
Darth Vader:Hold my beer
But Does Vader can force freeze a blaster bolt and same time freeze a good guy and then kill some villagers?
BrickBuilt Creations Can Ren hold a guy on the ceiling while reflecting laser blasts and slashing trough ppl? No, he can't (no hate btw, I lovs them both)
Ormi Ader No I think not but he can stop a blaster then deflect it with his hand and jet the kill while throwing someone up on the ceiling and slashing through them then killing fifty more rebels Can Kylo ren do that ? 😂
How about we agree that Vader was awesome, and that Kylo Ren, whilst being a prodigy (it takes some power, talent, and cunning to wipe out Jedi), still can't quite compare to his grandfather. In fact, that's one of the things that irks Kylo, he wants to be so much like his grandfather, but he just can't reach his level. Hence him being seduced by Snoke.
Darth Vader>Kylo Ren
Rogue one is ny favorite star wars.
When does everyone die in a Disney movie? Seriously, the Vader hallway seen was,
Freekin Awesome! Great review.
Thanks
I've been a Star Wars fanboy since before it was "A New Hope", way back in 1977. I LOVED this film and thought that it was everything that the prequels weren't. If you've ever read the novelization of "Revenge of the Sith" by Matthew Stover you know exactly what I mean. Vader's scene at the end (and The Mandalorian taught us that you should NEVER get caught in a corridor when fighting against a Skywalker!) and the rage he displays is a perfect lead-in to the anger you see at the beginning of Episode IV. Throughout the rest of the OT he's essentially calm as he destroys people and things. Rogue One even explains his display of emotions on Tantive IV.
I'll probably get burnt at the stake for this but, this is my favorite Star Wars movie. I love the tone, I think it fits the war aspect of it. As much as I love the O.G trilogy you don't really feel the war and the oppression from the Empire, you hear about it, but you don't see it. In this movie I really feel like the Empire has to be defeated at all cause for the good of the universe.
who wants to burn you at the stake??? star wars fans are not supposed to do that to each other, and haters are not real fans. Besides, we are millions to agree with you
I can respect that. Rogue One is a good movie. My favorite is A New Hope, but Rogue One is up there.
Never having watched the original movies before rogue one I couldn't enjoy episode IV more than this... Nostalgia does play a part in people thinking anything is better.... Like I prefer the old star trek than the new ones cause I watched them tho the new ones are good too.. anyway this movie was excellent
Yeah, O.G. trilogy deserve respect because this universum which people around the world love was created with first three movies, but Rogue 1 developed it to whole new level. It still has funny androids, adventure scenery, but now plot is much more anticipaded, just like it always should have been. Purists of O.G. trilogy, just retuse to even imagine that yes, O.G. star wars could have been even better.
It's because the purist Disney haters don't want to accept that they can make not just a good Star Wars film, but a great Star Wars film.
My parents took me to see Star Wars in 1977. I’ve seen every Star Wars movie in the theater on its initial run. I’ve read the books, I’ve played the games, I even saw the holiday special when it aired in ‘78.
This is the best movie in the Star Wars universe.
That's an odd opinion. But to each their own.
Nice!

How?
14:22 when there's no wind in space so you have to use the force to make your cape flow
Don't ya just hate it when that happens?
It was from the thrusters on the ship that left seconds before.
I knew you do it. You drame queen you.
either the thrusters or his momentum was moving his cape
Aye, the vented oxygen from a room that's got a gaping hole in it would cause the cape to flutter menacingly.
The Vader hallway scene is a cinematic masterpiece and it lives rent free in my heart. It’s the cherry that tops this absolutely amazing movie, and the “there’s a problem on the horizon, there is no horizon” has become one of the best jokes in my friend group. 11/10 movie, only topped by episode 3 and 6.
That scene shows his incompetence
@@andymiller6661 do you just not like fun? It’s Darth Vader going all Darth Vader on a bunch of helpless rebels, what more would you want?
@dybo3793 I love fun. I want him to be competent and to do his job, instead of playing with his food
