    Can you imagine what a gigantic pain in the brown grommet it must have been driving trucks like this, back before the highway system, when you had to drive through every town, stop at every light, all the other non-sense?

      This truck was an ex-cement truck so I've often thought of some of the predicaments it's been in before and yes countless shifting up and down all day. Thanks for watching!

      You sound like a little girl. I would guess you like everything to be automated for you, and have heated seats, power steering, power windows, and bluetooth. Make sure you have room for your purse, whatever you’re “driving”. 🤣

      I enjoy driving manual as it keeps it interesting and you're in more control and understanding of your environment.
      Sure you might want everything automated for you, but some of us like learning these skills and putting them to good use. The job itself isn't boring when you enjoy and understand engines and mechanics.

      Not as bad as they look he’s just showing shifting the main and auxiliary when your loaded you have to split them these old Mack b models didn’t have big engines they had low gear ratios and a lot of gears empty you can go lo-split 1234 and then 5 in the main you can split that losplit direct and hi split rarely ever used Lo-Lo in the auxiliary unless extremely heavy the quad box is a very useful gearboxes

      Before I retired I had a chance to drive a Freightliner with an automatic, fell in love with it but they only let me make one run in it and that was back in the late '90's. But I guess those super 10's were my favorite though.

    Easy to do (with one hand).
    Shift up (aux) before you shift down (main) on an up shift and shift down (aux) before you shift up (main) on a downshift. He was only using three gears on the main. Shifting as a tri-plex.
    Drove a brand new 20 year old DM, because no one else wanted to drive it.
    Thank you Fred. Mechanic laying under a truck in the shop gave me that instruction. By the end of day 2 I had it down.
    Senior drivers were yelling at me on the radio that “that truck could not do that”. Oh, it did it, and well.
    Two hands, two pedals at the same time...all rookies.

    • @matthewjones8620
      @matthewjones8620  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You apparantly don't understand how a quadraplex works, you do not split every main shift 4 times with The auxiliary, the auxiliary has Low, Under, Direct, and Over. Low is a granny gear or backing gear, a triplex does not have a low hole in the auxiliary but you learned everything in 2 days so I don't guess I could teach you anything, the shift sequence for this trans is 1-Low , 1-Under, 1-Direct, 1-Over, 2-Under, 2-Direct, 2-Over, 3-under, 3-Direct, 3-Over, 4-Under, 4-Direct, 4-Over, 5-over.

    • @jasonbuck489
      @jasonbuck489 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And if you drove them old Tri-Plexes and Quad Boxes you know to NEVER, NEVER, EVER have both Sticks in Neutral at the same time... Haha!... If that ever happened or it jumped outta gear, you might as well just ease on over to the shoulder and start all over again!
      I had one that I used to keep the access plate and shifter boots loose... Every now and then the Shifter Forks Bind and I'd need to pull the Auxiliary Range Shifter up out, get my Screw Driver which I kept handy in the Defroster Slot, and line everything back up and put the shifter back down in where it was supposed to live at... It took me under 3 mins... I had it down to a Science!... Daggone worn out trucks.... Had to do what ya had to do back then...

      @@matthewjones8620I'd skip alot of gears with them if I weren't all that heavy

    Nice smooth shifting there indeed. I was a truck mechanic for seven years before going into another career. I drove a 6/4 spicer a few times and kinda figured it out, but I wasn't pulling any weight and never down shifted so I know that would have been a whole different experience. I believe I could have gotten better with more practice. BUT!!! I tried the 5/4 in an old R model Mack once and FAILED miserably lol. Great video...thanks for sharing!!

Then I would have to pull over to the curb and crawl under the truck and knock the linkage back into neutral and get back in the truck and continue on my way.

These had seats stuffed with straw and no power steering. 5 speed main so that's what I used. I never went far though, but backing in a tight spot was a workout. They sold them and stayed with an Eaton shift. Wish I knew the models and how old they were and sorry I never learned the art of shifting 2 stick.

    • @matthewjones8620

      No, married 5x4 1st the auxiliary is a very deep gear and you do not use it to split main box gears, under-direct-over for every main box gear with the exception of 5th in this particular trans 4th over to 5th over is one up shift. 4th over to 5th under would actually be a down shift and mack says not to use 5th under due to excessive stress and heat on the gears
