Actually in some deserts you won't really see much until sunrise as the desert and sun love to play tricks like that in ways you'd hate the most, the US actually has one of the nastiest deserts ever called Death Valley, and it easily reaches well over 120°F in the day

Something that The Mummy does that so many movies forget now: It's FUN. There's humor, there's some romance, there's some horror, there's action. It's like you get to go on an Egyptian adventure. The Mummy Returns and Scorpion King are pretty fun too. Mummy Returns is my favorite. A small detail that was really cool: The Mummy doesn't recognize the Star of David because he died before the time of King David, but he recognizes Hebrew from the Hebrew slaves.

*o'connel* : "benny, looks you are on the wrong side of the river!!!"
*benny* : *having second thoughts* .... *feels defeated yet again* 😕😕😕😟🙁😮😵‍💫
*evie* : *walks by and takes the books of the dead from the sleeping scientist!!* and *doesnt realize o'connel is not sleeping but watching her the entire time* .. she happily sits down. :P
*o'connel* : *stares at her when she sits down than mumbles* "thats called stealing!!"
*evie* : *unmoved at o'connels retort and continues to open the book with the key* "in my brother's world its called borrowing.."
*o'connel* : *looking uneasy at evie* "you sure you want to be opening and reading that?"
*evie* : " oh come its a book, nothing ever comes bad from reading a book.."

I think there's too much conflation that having funny bits makes something fun. It's gotta fit, its gotta make enough sense in the greater context. You can't just make someone quippy and suddenly "hey, it's fun". The Mummy understood that.

I’ve watched this movie a zillion times with my kids, but I actually just noticed something new. In Jurrasic Park, when Dennis Nedry slips down the wet hill in the rain trying to escape, if you listen close there’s a hilarious little slide whistle sound added in.
Well, in this movie, if you listen close at the 20:48 mark, after Jonathan hits the wall, the crashing sound ends with a little “ppptttt!” noise.
Those kinds of little Easter eggs crack me up. I can’t believe I never caught that one before now!

0:59 Servants. They don’t necessarily have to be slaves. Maybe some were, but Pharaohs were considered closest to their Gods (like sons or prophets), so many volunteers considered it an honor to serve him in any way, not just the military.
2:53 Invincible, but to suffer pain forever locked inside the coffin. Not even death could save him.
3:11 Actually, ethnically, North Africans of Arabian decent were on both sides of the conflicts of World War One. This portrayal is really inaccurate because the ones riding on horseback with head wraps and turbans were backed up by the Americans, British, French, and Italians during this war. You would have to look back in your generations to find out which “side” you were on. The Ottomans (backed by Austria-Hungary and Germany) wore uniforms and fought like a traditional military force of the time. The Arabian Knights (the ones backed by Americans, British, French, and Italians), fought guerrilla-style. Quick attacks, quick withdrawals. Kill some Ottomans, retreat. Repeat. Blow up train tracks. Call in Western artillery at close ranges. Sneak assassinated diplomats. If you’ve never heard of Lawrence of Arabia, he was a real British man that brought the Arabian Bedouins together to create the military to force out the Ottoman Empire, ultimately making it disband and become modern day Turkey. So in reality, the American gunslinger shown in this movie would actually be working with the guys on horses with scimitars than people in any form of standard uniform. They would have suspected him as a spy and killed him before putting him command of any forces. The successful end of World War One would see many of these leading Arab men being granted land and wealth to oversee Northern Africa and the Middle East so it never fell into Ottoman Empire hands again. The Ottoman Empire fell and broke up. The Arabian Knights and Western Countries did this. This comment is not to make the Western Countries feel good, but to assure you, it was mainly the coalition of Arab Bedouin that came together on horses and camels to fight the evil Ottomans out of Africa. If I were to guess, you are descendant of these Arabian Knights as we call them in the west. They formed many countries in North Africa and in the Middle East too. Then oil was discovered and all of it went to hell.
5:19 They speak Egyptian because they are the ancient keepers of this tomb. The guards who mummified Imotep alive are the ancient ancestors of these men with tattoos on their faces. They speak this old language to keep secret.
7:35 Unfortunately, yes. The British were the main people who took artifacts from Egypt, simply because they had the best Archaeological teams in the world at the time. They could find hidden tombs better than anyone else. To give them a little credit, in real life they got permission from the Egyptian government to find these places. However, the transportation of artifacts was not discussed, so Britain took many of these back to the UK where they are still displayed today. A wrong on the UK and a mistake by the Egyptian government. To be completely fair, most of North Africa was controlled unofficially or officially by some European power who won them from the Ottoman Empire after its defeat. Trust me guys, you are better off. You don’t want the Ottoman Empire continued into today’s storyline. They were Islamic, yes, but extremely brutal and not nice to their own people. You now have sovereignty, which I don’t think would have happened if a revolution was fought against the Ottoman Empire. They had faced that threat of revolution many times throughout their almost 500 year rule and almost every time killed everyone in villages and cities. Brutal and barbarous treatment compared to the already acknowledged bad of European colonization. At least Europeans built societies with running water, toilets, and sectionalized communities with different taxes (business, homes, factories, etc.) The Ottomans never modernized cities or towns where they conquered, they just demanded taxation.

Have you guys ever heard of that thing about cats being the guardians of the underworld? I know Egypt has some fascination with cats in some way.

Another epic score by Oscar-Winning composer Jerry Goldsmith. In 1999 he also scored "The Haunting", which was a less-than-stellar remake of the original. For better or for worse, Goldsmith often composed great scores for some really shitty movies, probably because the stakeholders knew he would improve the overall watchability of the film.

They do not get lost in the desert because they triangulate by the position of the sun in the day time and they use the stars as a map for position at night. People have done so as long as man kind has existed. Even to travel across the seas, before navigational tools were invented.

This movie is a remake of "The Mummy's Hand." 1940. Dick Foran and Peggy Moran. The Mummy's hand was a B movie for sure, but it is very entertaining. Both are Universal movies.

There are matches (we called them wooden matches) that you can strike (light) on things like concrete, wood (all you need is enough friction) and a fingernail or thumbnail (holding the match with one hand and using your thumbnail or fingernail to strike it from the top).

Yeah the neck is supposed to break and always has been. The saying "hung by the neck until dead" just means that if the neck does not then he/she will strangle instead.

Have you guys seen the movie "Peace by Chocolate"? You should. And it's a (mostly) true story (there's a little bit more drama in the movie than how it happened in real life). It's just a sweet little movie about a community embracing a family of refugees from Syria, and a family from Syria embracing a little community in Nova Scotia, Canada. ❤❤

The real Imhotep was a Architect/medicine man. He came up with the idea for the pyramids. The movie twisted who he once was.
Still it's a good story though.

The reason they thought the curse was okaybwas becasue for Egyptians, the curse and fear of dissrespecting the dead would orevent people for disturbing the mummy's grave
However, foreign powers like the european and americans have neither such respect for the dead, but also beleive more in gold than curses
So the provelm was overtime people ingored the curse, or foreign powers sought the wealth of egypt and didn't beleive or care.
