All good advice thank you. My aging computer (10 years) recently slowed down. Despite frequently cleaning away inherent dust, I had never removed the heatsink. There was a massive amount of dust around the CPU. Once removed and thermal paste reapplied the computer is now back to full speed.
Two items to consider: 1) Over the years, the hot CPU can burn away the thermal paste that allows the CPU's fan to cool the CPU. The fan can spin away at warp speed, and will have nearly zero cooling affect, if the thermal paste burned away. And if the fan fails (due to dust or a bad bearing or whatever), the CPU will run very hot and reduce the life of the thermal paste. When that paste dries up, your CPU will throttle down, and in a very significant way. If your computer ever gave off a burning smell, but kept running, and then stopped giving off that smell, then that was probably the thermal paste saying goodbye. It is usually a simple matter to remove the CPU fan, clean its surface, and put a new dab of thermal paste there and re-install the fan. If you need a shop to do it, it should not take them more than 5 to 10 minutes for a desktop, and a bit longer for a laptop (if they have to remove lots of screws to open the case). 2) If your computer is running slowly, you can reinstall your operating system -- put the computer back to its factory settings (as though it is being turned on for the first time). Assuming your hardware has no cooling issues, or bad memory issues, etc (and most will have none of these issues), then your computer will run just as fast as it did when you first turned it on years ago. Of course, make sure you back up your computer, before returning it to the factory settings (because, just like any new computer, nothing of yours will be on it after you return it to the factory settings). If, after #2 is completed, the computer runs fast (and it probably will), then that means that the reason it was running slowly was due to crap you installed (either intentionally or malware managed to get in). Cheers!
@@ibrahimalrubaye803 For pictures, you can drag them to somewhere else to make copies (like to an external drive). For games... that is more complicated. Games are applications (programs). No different than any programs that you install. There is no way (well there is, but very, very complicated) to determine every file that the game depends on. Depending on the game, make sure that you have the installation disk (or zip file or whatever source you used to install the game). Also try to determine where the game saved its settings. Otherwise, if you do a fresh install of the game, then all of your custom options will not be there. Also, maybe you have saved game sessions? In what file(s) does that data get stored? You will need that answer if you end up re-installing the game and you go to pull up a game in progress, and it is not there. Does your game automatically sign you in to some site? If you do a fresh install, then that auto-login information will probably get lost. Do you remember your login credentials? Another thing to help your hard drive is to check the download folders because every time you download something including software updates, your computer saves the install packages to this folder. And when you update something, the older version doesn't get removed from the download folder. If you go it, you might see a lot of versions of the same program. You can delete everything from this folder without a problem because all these are is the installation files for the programs or updates. If you want, you can leave the latest version of the program or update in there. You might be able to free up a lot of space by deleting those out.

As a former IT professional, I can tell you this isn’t much of an issue on anything but computers running Windows. I ran IT for a media college with two campuses that had hundreds of PCs and Macs, about half and half. It was simpler to just push out new images to the PCs every semester than try to fix and upgrade all the stuff they constantly needed. We even used Deep Freeze, which is an absolute must, even with virus protection on the PCs. They automatically rebooted every night to reset themselves to the frozen mode. Invariably, there would be one or two a week that blue screened and had to be totally reimaged. I will say this, Windows PCs provided job security for my staff, because if all we had to maintain were the Macs, one employee would have done the trick.
I'm a computer tech at a local school district. The IT dept. used to have DeepFreeze long ago (when I was a student at that district), but they got rid of it a few years ago and I'm not sure why. But like you said, it is usually much easier and faster to reimage a computer instead of trying trying to trouble shoot it. They have actually gone to Chromebooks for students and the teachers still use Windows laptops. They don't have many desktop PCs anymore in use.
Correction: If a disk spins, it is true that the linear velocity of the outer circle spins faster, as opposed to the inner one, but the angular velocity is the same. That means that the laser beam reads at the same rate the sectors of the disk, no matter if it's the outer or the inner perimeter.
Right. Disk sector's length changes as a function of radius. So essentially, all radial disk head positions are equally fast. Or equally slow, depending on your hard drive model. ;-)
You are correct in your assumption that the outer part of the disk is moving at a faster linear velocity than the the inner. For this reason, disk hard drives were designed to have a variable thread lead screw which adjusts the movement of the reading component of the drive accordingly.

It’s always a good idea to take out and clean your pneumatic rheostat rod at least twice a year. I usually dampen a microfiber towel with some radioactive emulsified magnaflux and gently stroke it north to south, making sure not to let any of the inner liquid squirt onto your hand as it is a bit sticky. Once you’ve drained some of the fluid out It’ll usually ease some of the tension a little. When you reinsert it back into the hole, make sure you put the head in first followed by the chrome plated balls. Unless you have the large stainless-steel balls. Then you can just stick in any hole that’ll take it.

CCleaner comes with a Registry tool. Do not use this tool as like any registry cleaner it can lead to the creation of very difficult to resolve system errors.
Love these simple informative videos. It's the kind of info I rarely need, but I save the videos for when I need to do maintenance to find good software again etc. Nice work ThioJoe.
Boredom with a computer that old, its most likely that the networking card can only handle 4mbps. you could upgrade to a usb wifi dongle which would be a massive improvement.
Don't defragment, don't download a registry cleaner, don't sit in front of the computer deleting large files. To speed up your computer re-install Windows and the job is done.
Great information. A lot of people don't understand that computers need maintenance. I have one from 1998 that still functions well for the basic tasks. I've kept it cleaned and clear of unnecessary software and it runs like a top. Do you have any recommendations for a program that is capable of identifying duplicate or unnecessary files and allows them to be removed? I know that over the years, with backing up apple products and other devices as well as migrating files from other sources, I have duplicate documents and photos that may or may not have the same file name. A program that is capable of comparing file size, file type and maybe dates created would be great.
I use to speed up my old XP computer by backing up everything and reinstalling windows. It really worked. It also seemed that whenever Microsoft came out with a new OS, the updates for old OS's would make them slow down noticeably. Best way to speed up a computer is to use an ssd, IMHO.

Don't forget, if you vacuum your heat-sinks, immobilise the fans first! (Free them again after vacuuming.) Why? The fast air flow will try to spin your fans very quickly if you don't, and that can generate electricity in the fan motor just like a wind-turbine. You do NOT want to fry the fan's drive electronics, or the fan won't spin at all. The same applies to compressed air dusters. Hold the fan still!

TheoJoe, the information you provide is invaluable. Thank you.
Love these simple informative videos. It's the kind of info I rarely need, but I save the videos for when I need to do maintenance to find good software again etc. Nice work ThioJoe.

@@GHENIC 9 years old, tell your laptop to subscribe to pewds
Too young, shame on you.
Boredom with a computer that old, its most likely that the networking card can only handle 4mbps. you could upgrade to a usb wifi dongle which would be a massive improvement.
My hard disk was at 100%, disabled Origin at Startup, it dropped dramatically from 100% to 20%. Thanks, Thio! 🙂
Don't defragment, don't download a registry cleaner, don't sit in front of the computer deleting large files. To speed up your computer re-install Windows and the job is done.
Why would you try speeding up the computer by reinstalling the virus instead of removing it

I'm so glad I'm watching this on a new computer. I don't want this thing to ever slow down.
Interesting point about the hard drives. It's the type of thing you don't think about usually but makes complete sense.
All you need to do is put water on it, it will clean it all the way. Works all the time
I use to speed up my old XP computer by backing up everything and reinstalling windows. It really worked. It also seemed that whenever Microsoft came out with a new OS, the updates for old OS's would make them slow down noticeably. Best way to speed up a computer is to use an ssd, IMHO.
WARNING!!... Don't tell people to vacuum their computer!!.. I was told to do that before and it sucked the buttons on my keyboard!!... And thank you for the info!!...
This video got me thinking. I always install 2 partitions on my computer, 1 for the os and one for files/programs.
Windows sometimes fails for people, this makes it easy to reinstall without having to move files.
2 drives is better, OS on ssd, 3 terabyte hdd as secondary.

Don't forget, if you vacuum your heat-sinks, immobilise the fans first! (Free them again after vacuuming.)
Why? The fast air flow will try to spin your fans very quickly if you don't, and that can generate electricity in the fan motor just like a wind-turbine. You do NOT want to fry the fan's drive electronics, or the fan won't spin at all. The same applies to compressed air dusters. Hold the fan still!
You forget something... Delete System32
And delete Ram too!
Or download ram
Copy and paste your ram file into system 64
You can turn your ram from 512mb into 512gb
(system 32 is a old trick )

Comment about vacuuming out..
Do not vacuum it out, blow it out, or brush it lightly and pick out the big chunks.
Do not put a vacuum inside your computer

1 make bootable flash drive of your Linux distro of choice
2 backup personal files
3 format and install linux.
4 done. Never look back.

Over time, the registry will become less efficient as more entries are loaded causing a longer amount of time to do even minimal tasks in the software.

Strange thing, Windows sees your C:-drive as system drive, and your D:-drive as data-disk. However, default it writes all downloads to your C:-drive, destroying their reputation by making the computer slow down or even get stuck automatically (unless you actively interfere).
alot of BS. windows 10 is slowing down and is killing you Harddisk/ssd drive "swap file hill" the use of pagefile and swapfile is the main reason it is slowing down. just look at the hdd light on your pc. it is loading all the time.
just swap to linux. and the problem is now fix.
Linux desktop systems are niche. No one is going to use them except techy power users.
Step 1: Delete Windows 10
Step 2: Literally use anything else

@@SurrealCubeOnly
I already have a legal MS-DOS.
Free DOS is also a good option. It is a nearly complete bug for bug match to MS-DOS. They made some of the system calls mess up in the same way as the MS-DOS version so that programs with code to compensate for the errors would work right.
You were in Power saver mode lol
