I hated Chrysler and swore I’d never own an SUV. Got put in a desperate position a couple years back and had to either accept a 2003 Cherokee, or get used to walking. The Jeep made my opinion turn a full 180. At one point I had a 5 year run with it where it only needed ONE repair; a power steering hose for like 70 bucks. I never looked back. We now own 3 of them. Most reliable, fun, comfortable and capable vehicle I’ve ever seen. It’s too bad that, after the XJ and WJ, they nerfed it… turning the Cherokee into a gated community mom grocery getter.

I have 2003 Quadradrive diesel (EU), I can't fully agree with you with about it being bad. You are correct about that when it's not maintained correctly, it will break fast. Hydraulic coupling in 247 won't have it long with wrong fluid. Same with diffs, Vari-lok also has progressive locks that ONLY take mopar oil additive (friction modifier), without that.. again, boom so soon. BUT. If one takes these things in consideration, takes elemental care of them, changes fluids at least when they remember to do it and put correct ones in it... I absolutely love this system. It's not preloaded LSD, these things lock up to 100% and so smoothly as well. I have neglected TC for a while and I know that my coupling is starting to go bad but it still goes and goes and goes. We had bad snowstorms for a week, there was not one place that I was scared to drive. I know that I don't have to stop to change 2wd to 4wd, it's always on. In a second all 4 wheels dig in if necessary. No driver input needed. In snow, it works marvelously. On harder terrain (sand, gravel, hillclimbing) I would like diffs to engage a little faster, since they work on difference of wheel speeds, sometimes I need to give more gas to get them properly locked and spinning and that means I give up control a little, but.. Not too bad. I have thought about 242 conversion, but for now... I try not to fix something thats not broken (car has gone 280kkm, I'm planning on rebuilding pretty much everything on it piece by piece and keeping it for another while) EDIT: Quadradrive has nothing to do with computer, where does this knowledge even come from?? IDK, maybe 4.0/4.7 have it different, but not that I know of.. It has NV247 TC, it has progressive hydraulic coupler for 4HI, it engages when rear axle slips. Not by speed sensors. Coupler is essencially a pump, housing on one axle side, pump on other and if speed difference happens, it instantly builds oil pressure that engages drive clutches. Thats it. Not one sensor or other electrical input. Same with diffs. 100% mechanical/hydraulical. In 4LO TC is mechanically locked, cutting coupler out of the system. Not a single electrical decision goes into that.
Well that's a pretty old video and most of this blabla is correct ... but the old quadra drive in the wj is mechanical wizardry with no computer involved at all (some limited slip clutch type stuff).

Power Steering hoses , a couple of dodgy oil seals , Fuel Injector connectors , Fuel injector Service . Runs like a Swiss watch . Gloriously comfortable to drive , ZERO rust . Has seen snow once . Been in sand and off road occasionally . Clear lacquer on Hood starting to break down . 4.7L V8 , bit thirsty around town , but on a long trip: Brilliant ! l understand the RHD ones were built in Graz , Austria by Daimler . Also has the benefit of a Tape Player and CD Stacker !
Thanks, i was thinking about this model because of the tunning and modern looks, but think i will move away my choice to ZJ is that model can stand better the pass of times
Couldn’t disagree more with the assessment. I used to hate Chrysler and never thought I’d ever own an SUV in general. Got put in a desperate spot and accepted one as it was within my budget… and never looked back. 5 years and it only needed ONE repair, a power steering hose. 5 years. I have never had a run with ANY of the previous used cars in my life that long without a repair. Absolutely unheard of. We now have 3 of these Cherokees. Absolutely fantastic vehicles,
@@30AndHatingIt Yeah you replace something and if fails after driving 250k, plain junk. I don't know what these people are doing to their Jeeps, but I'm sure it's related to abuse.
@@30AndHatingIt So true, so many times I had a someone say "I'm gonna die if you don't fix X". And half the time nothing was wrong, or it was a hard rain surface rusted the rotors and made a noise when first hitting the brakes and it cleaned off.
Don't let the engine overheat. Yes, replace the thermostat every five years. Door window controls are...iffy. Expect fairly regular seal replacement (rear pinion in particular). Seats are not comfortable.
Yes quad does suck, its for people that dont know how to use 4wd. My 2000 is a limited with select track and all the bells and whistles , 250 k everything works , except the known problems , broken blend doors, leaking heater core, tail light circuit boards. 4.7 runs great ( don't know if any work has been done to it like valve seats or lash ajusters)
As a mechanic l work on all vehicles, I don't find the jeep any worse than the average vehicles, the problems with jeeps is some of the modification aren't done right and we abuse the heck out of them. Mine holds up very well, l only did a 2 in lift to it. So it handles great. The thing with any car is , can you do repairs yourself.
337XXX miles on my 4.0 liter 2004 Jeep Cherokee...no problems, drive it every day even off road in the mountains of Virginia. No problems other than fluid changes. It is also still "running strong"...I am giving you nothing but the truth.
My 1998 has 295k on it. Have a really annoying issue with the drivers door not seating properly, draining the battery, and causing the security system to activate. So I can't use the drivers door. Other then that, works very well.
Well.... mine has 300.000km and never had a problem with the engine or the gearbox, im not lying lmao, they're true warriors (IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM, THEY CANT TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES U IDIOTS)
I love the "Mickey Mouse" backyard wrench review. You can really see that you do quality work when it comes to maintaining your rides. LMAO!! Probably why you have longevity issues with the WJ. All vehicle need proper care.
I had one of these lasted 3 days took it out “mudding” once got water in it asd relay was shorting out key light came on. Just junked it. Had same year ford explorer that took a lot more abuse and lasted way longer
I’ve had my 2004, same set up as this, since 2007. I still only have 128k on it. I’ve had a few offers and complements from people that want it. Not looking to sell it anytime soon. 😎
My 99 is also rust free, all original drivetrain with 4.0 Quadra Trac awd system. Runs, drives and shifts perfectly, does well off-road and in the last 5000 miles since last oil change it's still full. I've never owned a vehicle that didn't leak or burn some oil
Great info! I agree with everything you said about this vehicle. AMC power and drive train are the best! Chrysler/Daimler/Fiat all suck. People buy the name while knowing nothing about what a real Jeep is.
I own a 1998 Grand Cherokee Ltd. Still runs well. If you keep them maintained they will not let you down. It has the straight 6 motor and it is a ZG which was made in Austria. Maybe the Austrians made them better than you Yanks did ?
Reviews like this piss me off. Not because I’m a Jeep person (I’ve had 84 cars of all make and models) but because they’re inherently biased. Almost bet he thinks Toyota and Honda are the gold standard of vehicles when in reality they break like anything else. If I had a dollar for every Toyota head gasket or timing set I’ve sold I’d be rich. Not to mention Honda suspension parts and transmissions. Then there’s the $800 timing jobs both of them will eventually need unless it’s chains which also seem to go especially on toyota. Everything has planned obsolescence built into it bc that is what keeps car manufacturers in business. Drive what you like and what fits your lifestyle and stop worrying what people think about what you drive. Nobody really cares what you drive unless they are deeply insecure and need to put you down to feel better about themselves. And don’t get your advice from someone making money off repairs unless they can show you data saying how much has been spent on a particular brands average repair. There’s shops on here that have that information.
Chrysler sucks always has. I love jeeps , I had a fit when I heard chrysler bought the jeep brand . but you have to deal with it. I have a 2000 wj Im restoring . It got even worse when mercedes and fiat stuck there 2 cents in. Your right about the bodys , Ive been a mechanic for 50 years and do body work as well, but cant paint to save my life.
The transmission is worse than average. It’s better than a Toyota with 800,000 miles on it. It clunks into drive & reverse. However it works fine when moving!
Crapagee 🤣🤣 just to establish, these are awful vehicles. I don't give a shit what people say, the 4.0 is an abysmal engine. They are weak internally. If the trans doesn't spit in your eyes, the money you'll be putting into of the suspension parts will. I don't get it. I see them at tuff truck contests, and they're beasts, but the entire suspension's longetivity on ALL the grand Cherokees SUCK. The interiors ALL fall apart. Every SINGLE grand Cherokee I've ever worked on was either knocking with an oil overspray on the hatch, or deathwobbled at 35. Lastly, good luck buying a used one that somebody actually changed the fluids in. I got an uncle who is all about Jeeps (has 85 YJ on 35s). He quotes the Cherokees are "wannabee" jeeps. He bought his wife an 05 Liberty. I told him I won't fix it anymore after the block started leaking coolant. Now it's a 2019 Renegade. Waiting to see how Jeep has soiled it's name with this piece of shit.

@@gizzyguzzi It's not the aftermarket I give a shit about it's the fact of -premature failure- I'm emphasizing. Premature wear of suspension transmission and engine components. Rings, seals, gaskets, gears, transfer cases differential steering boxes you name it. Every single Cherokee I've ever seen for sale, all of them, had some kind of failure in the power train or suspension. Not just little things, rod knock blown rings transmission valves destroyed knuckles hubs ect. Not just, we'll put some seals hoses and trailing arms here and there. A full rebuild of some system of the car itself. THAT'S what agitates me about Cherokees. Perfectly designed vehicles that are perfectly a cataclysm when you get one. I guess all I can say is, if you have one from the date it was made, keep it, but every one for sale is completely screwed. Especially the Liberty 🤣 now I would own 3 Cherokees at once before owning 1 Liberty. I guess if you change the oil once a year in a car you'd sell it too, like all cars that are renown tanks but people just drive them into the never world. @@nickd.7267 I see plenty of WJs for sale. At 225-250k miles plenty seem to be having trans problems. I see others for sale at 150k-180k miles that look very nice, in the $5k or less price range. Occasional 140k miles for $6k. I'm not afraid of them. I think you are the first to say the 4.0 sucks, it seems to be widely regarded as one of the best engines. Not a single electrical decision goes into that.
I had a lifted 93 31"tires i loved it it rotted away i prefer my Wk for daily driver
Engine replacement isn't to bad in these just pull the trans and transfer case all at once
Well that's a pretty old video and most of this blabla is correct ... but the old quadra drive in the wj is mechanical wizardry with no computer involved at all (some limited slip clutch type stuff).
RHD 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo , purchased 14 years ago with 95K on the clock . In 14 years ( apart from regular oil , brake , transmission services etc ) I have : Replaced Transmission . Radiator ( 10 years ago ) , Window Regulators (2) , Front Trans Axles , Shocks , and all bushings ( replaced with Neoprene) . MAF sensor ( NEVER use Chinese , AWAYS genuine ) .
I have 3 of them. One to wheel one as a daily and another for parts.
Thanks, i was thinking about this model because of the tunning and modern looks, but think i will move away my choice to ZJ is that model can stand better the pass of times
"It can do anything, except staying fixed"
That sentence pretty much sums up the Jeep Grand Cherokee
Pretty much sums up everything on the road. Trust me, I've worked on them all.
Or they’re like my ex and every single little imperfection is overblown. Oh my god it needed brakes, it was so expensive!!!
@@30AndHatingIt So true, so many times I had a someone say "I'm gonna die if you don't fix X". And half the time nothing was wrong, or it was a hard rain surface rusted the rotors and made a noise when first hitting the brakes and it cleaned off.
4.7 V8 here, ive replaced the ECM and Alternator, 323k miles no lie
Don't let the engine overheat. Yes, replace the thermostat every five years. Door window controls are...iffy. Expect fairly regular seal replacement (rear pinion in particular). Seats are not comfortable.
If you take care of the quadra trac, no problems.
How’s it holding up still
This king about buying one at 180k for 900
As a mechanic l work on all vehicles, I don't find the jeep any worse than the average vehicles, the problems with jeeps is some of the modification aren't done right and we abuse the heck out of them. Mine holds up very well, l only did a 2 in lift to it. So it handles great. The thing with any car is , can you do repairs yourself.
I got a 2000 limited crank no start where do I start looking ?
337XXX miles on my 4.0 liter 2004 Jeep Cherokee...no problems, drive it every day even off road in the mountains of Virginia. No problems other than fluid changes. It is also still "running strong"...I am giving you nothing but the truth.
My 1998 has 295k on it. Have a really annoying issue with the drivers door not seating properly, draining the battery, and causing the security system to activate. So I can't use the drivers door. Other then that, works very well.
What about the Quadra TRAC? Thoughts??
Well.... mine has 300.000km and never had a problem with the engine or the gearbox, im not lying lmao, they're true warriors (IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM, THEY CANT TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES U IDIOTS)
I love the "Mickey Mouse" backyard wrench review.
You can really see that you do quality work when it comes to maintaining your rides. LMAO!!
Probably why you have longevity issues with the WJ.
All vehicle need proper care.
You mentioned the Jeep GC can't win races... Let me introduce you to the 1998 GC 5.9L
I had one of these lasted 3 days took it out “mudding” once got water in it asd relay was shorting out key light came on. Just junked it. Had same year ford explorer that took a lot more abuse and lasted way longer
Mine was the inline 6 too
I’ve had my 2004, same set up as this, since 2007. I still only have 128k on it. I’ve had a few offers and complements from people that want it. Not looking to sell it anytime soon. 😎
I didn't know Meat Canyon had a car channel
Bullshit! The body on my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee is in perfect shape & has 0 rust!!
It appears to be in the same shape it was new!!
Thinking about getting one, is $8990, 180,000km's on the odometer.
Way to high are you still looking?
@@almightyroachkillaz no
@@Watcherw1 right on. Good luck
500.000km, never had any problems
And yes it has quad drive and I love the way it rides and drives but dang
I own a 1998 Grand Cherokee Ltd. Still runs well. If you keep them maintained they will not let you down. It has the straight 6 motor and it is a ZG which was made in Austria. Maybe the Austrians made them better than you Yanks did ?
He didn't mention Quadra-trac II.
Hahaha ! Started the video on the negative side, then almost everything you said was positive .
Need parts to fix it
Your are wrong, the 4.7 is a great engine
See our video on the 4.7 that was just posted this week. I talked about a Ram we used in a challenge video that has the 4.7L engine.
thanks 😂
Loved my 93 my 06 v8 4.7 starters are shit plugs and ignition coil. Ugh but daily mom driver does the job but cheap plastics and nonsense
Chrysler sucks always has. I love jeeps , I had a fit when I heard chrysler bought the jeep brand . but you have to deal with it. I have a 2000 wj Im restoring . It got even worse when mercedes and fiat stuck there 2 cents in. Your right about the bodys , Ive been a mechanic for 50 years and do body work as well, but cant paint to save my life.
do the xj
The transmission is worse than average. It’s better than a Toyota with 800,000 miles on it.
It clunks into drive & reverse. However it works fine when moving!
if you want to sell anything say 'inexpensive' not cheep
The computer has nothing to do with Quadra drive.
I laughed when I saw a 2013-'18 Toyota Rav4 in the background! A lot better reliability with that I bet!
كويسي
This guy knows nothing about about jeeps🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Waiting to see how Jeep has soiled it's name with this piece of shit.
yeah, they only last 250k miles and keep on going after that. totally suck.
@@gizzyguzzi If you have a couple grand they're amazing vehicles. Then you realize you could have done that with any vehicle.
@@nickd.7267 not really. in today's market you will be hard pressed to do better than a WJ with a 4.0, for twice the price. What other 4x4 SUV with some modern conveniences will do better? I'm listening.
If you can provide me with listings of Cherokees that aren't destroyed in some mechanical way please, tell me, I'm listening.
I would rather have a Land Cruiser, but I won't pay the asking prices. 4Runner, XTerra, Explorer, Blazer, Montero. I don't think there are better options in the class at the $4000-$5000 price. They made so damn many they are easy to find nice ones.
On the traction lever, what is the function of the “neutral”?
Sure. 1970s Subarus had lift gates. So Jeep 'invented' it. haha
