    sad news from Frank Marino yesterday... 6/29/2021
    From Frank Marino:
    With sorrow I am forced to announce my immediate retirement from touring, and possibly all things related to continuing my career, due to an unexpected and debilitating medical condition which makes it impossible for me to tour. I want to thank all the people who supported me all of the last half-century. I know that many were looking forward to seeing us play this fall and I was looking forward to getting out again and doing more shows, but it now appears that in the absence of a miraculous recovery, my Concert DVD (Live at the Agora) will constitute the last show I will ever have played. I ask any that are believers to include me in their prayers.

    Who the hell are the 39 idiots who voted "thumbs down" ? Are you kidding me ??? Frank Marino and Mohagony Rush have gotta be the most underrated guitarist/band EVER. How does ANYONE listen to this, or his other jams like Voodoo Child and NOT LOVE IT ??? This man can stand up onstage with any of the "Greats". What an absolutely incredible Guitarist and Band ✌

      @@Art-vf3mb His version of Voodoo Child (not Voodoo Child Slight Return) is unbelievable. Almost (almost) as good as a version that Eric Clapton and Steve Linwood play. That long, slow, funky sound, just perfect. Cannot deny Frank Marino's skill level. He's truly a Master, which is why it's just SO nuts that his name isn't a "prominent" name. 💯🔥🎸🔥✔️✌️

    I grew up in Montreal in the early '70s when Frank was getting started. You could get his band in a high school for $500, and we did. Stood there all night planted to the floor watching this guy from 10 feet away. Frantic emotional playing, uses the whole neck, will never forget it.

    Frank is probably one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. People listening over and over to Satriani or Gilbert usually don't bother to check out the man who had obvious influnce on those later guys. I also think Marino is the one who found the "golden middle" between emotional playing in the style of Hendrix/Page and great technical proficiency.

    I have several of his albums, but never had a chance to see him live.
    This is the first live video I have seen. He is as good as I thought he would be.
    Just this last weekend I told a someone while we were watching a SRV live DVD. "Frank Marino is the only person to play Voodoo Chile live, before SRV."
    Frank Marino and MR are very underrated on the national level, but very well respected here.

  • @guitarran
    @guitarran 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember an interview were Frank was asked if he ever met SRV and I recall Frank saying something like he ran into him back stage at some point and Frank said hi to Stevie but Stevie kinda stared at Frank and said nothing. I don't think Stevie was being rude or anything like that, Stevie was too much of kind soul for that, I think he was just dumbfounded and awestruck. And I must say the first time I saw these guys was at the Swing Auditorium 1978 and that show left me feeling the same way.

    • @allancrow134
      @allancrow134 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stevie just buried his dad, and then flew back to Montreal to play the show, just before which someone stole his pedalboard. I heard Frank tell this story in an interview. It was the only date they ever played together. Frank is a very gracious person and picked up on the vibes, he just decided to give Stevie some space. They never met up again..both gentle and thoughtful souls.

  • @abelwayne9613
    @abelwayne9613 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is why I always tell other musicians, stop idolizing other musicians, follow them, learn from them but don't EVER say, "I couldn't do that". Why? It is the surest way to become mediocre. I always look at the best and challenge THEM. I look to out do what ever they have done no matter how my mind tells me it is impossible. You know what it has done for me? I am better than I would have been if I had that low expectation of myself.
    Think of it this way. One day Frank Marino was a nobody. Nobody know of his talent EXCEPT the few that had heard him play. Obviously after hearing him ONLY a fool would say he isn't great even IF they didn't like his music or style. I have heard many musicians in my 45 years as a musician and I haven't heard many like Frank, but I have heard some that would certainly steal the show from many well known guitarists/musicians. It is a fact that in a world with over 7 billion people, there HAS to be a better guitarist, football player etc. It is just the law of averages and it ALWAYS wins out in the end.
    I am not bullshitting or "trolling"(what ever the fuck that is), I am saying don't waste your talent envying someone, copy them then move past them. That is why Frank surpassed Hendrix. Is he greater? No. Hendrix after all started the whole movement in rock. But Marino is technically far superior to Hendrix. If Hendrix would have lived? Who knows. Don't do drugs you dumb asses, it DOES kill brain cells.

      abel wayne Frank Marino and Terry Kath. The greatest and most underrated guitarists of all time. Hendrix said Kath was better than he was. I always loved both. I've played drums for over thirty years and I played with and I have known guitarists who never wanted the limelight that are better than most of the players that made it. It's a choice and the ones I know refused to sell their soul. Maybe that's why Frank and Mahogany Rush never exploded because they are clearly of super and Calibre

      +eric black Yes and no. Hendrix wasn't to this level though he was far better at writing and you must give him credit, Frank is his number one fan by the way. Page, great, you forgot Ritchie Blackmore another great. But Al Di meola is a different story altogether. You must remember, speed isn't everything. It is very important but Di Meola plays more complex patterns than Frank. Also you must not have heard of Frank Gambale and Allan Holdsworth. They are both incredible and if not the best ever, close to it. I like Frank best as he is a machine. But then again, I wouldn't listen to their music as often because I don't find it to my taste.
      Blackmore is my favorite, though not the best, then Hendrix, Page, Gary Moore,
      Frank of course, not necessarily in that order. Just those I would listen to the most often. You would be amazed at some of the older guitarists. Look up Rory
      Gallagher. He was also a master, different style, but still a master.

      @abelwayne9613 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry. There are 100's of guitarists that are better than Hendrix technically speaking. Apparently you didn't read my other posts. Hendrix is one of my two favorite guitarists. Sharing the top spot with Ritchie Blackmore, another great. But neither can keep up with some of those who exist today. The best aren't as popular as others. Frank Gambale and Alan Holdsworth are two that are far superior to Hendrix and Blackmore. Even Frank Marino(far more technically refined than Hendrix) would be able to give them a run for their money, but he would still lose.
      You are a fool. The usual know nothing music lover who thinks the musician he/she likes is the best. No, the best doesn't always sound good. It is the difficulty of what they play. My fellow band member can mock Hendrix note for note with the same sound. He is relatively unknown. However, he cannot even figure out what Gambale is doing on many solos. I have been copying Jon Lord of Deep Purple for years. I can do everything he did faster and better than he did. Why? Because we built our abilities on those giants. Does that mean I am as good as Jon Lord? No. It means in some ways I may have passed him, but I have to be honest, he was a pioneer to keyboardists as was Hendrix to guitarists.
      That said, Hendrix/Blackmore then maybe
      Page. But I wouldn't put any of them in a class with the best. They were yesterdays best.

    I seen Frank at Cobo Hall in 1981. I had to because I bought the Mahogany Rush Live album. My favorite of his still to this day. The pentatonic scale king right up there with Gary Moore IMO. What I found unique about Frank is his high energy and ability to create those sound scapes of a concert atmosphere.

    And man, does he remind me of Hendrix. Not just the guitar style but his voice.
