The price of new cars now days is unbelievable. If you sat down and figured up the total you spend on cars gas, insurance, repairs and purchase you would decide to ride a bicycle everywhere.
josh smith I just decided to buy used. Bought a 2012 Chevy Sonic LTZ three years ago for $15k cash with 2 year full warranty. Spent about $30/yr. for oil change and around $120 on maintenance so far. Drive less than 200 miles a week. Pay under $40 a month for gas. Insurance is $980/yr. Tax about $90/years and dropping annually. So I pay roughly $1700/year to fuel, maintain, and insure my car. That's less than 3 days pay for me. I traded a stock to get the money to buy it. Never thought of a bicycle. No issues. Always garaged. Just point a to point b. Been putting money aside for my next new used car in a few years.
I don't have much good to say about marriage. It's a bad deal for men in today's America. But if you find a girl who will date you when you are driving a piece of junk she might be a keeper.
Fala Crow Well you sure do make marriage sound appealing. But I'll still pass. More and more men are doing the same every year. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze.

When I bought my small one liter suzuki celerio. Everyone thought I was crazy, but it is the best car decision I ever made. Its extremely light on fuel, the insurance is cheap. Its now out of warranty, maintenance and service plan. But its so cheap to do a service and buy parts for it. The model and brand has been nothing but strong and reliable. My little car makes me happy financially, I will keep it till the doors fall off.
I'm probably the biggest car guy you'll ever meet. And I've never financed car, and I still drive my 2006 Mercedes C55 AMG that I bought new in 2006 paid in full with cash. Yes, it's possibly to drive a really really nice car without a payment. Just start saving.
I'm a petroleum engineer major and I will be starting at $150k a year. I don't see a problem with a $800-900 car payment. While I save up to pay it off. I'm not gonna wait 2 years to buy the car that I want.
I drive a 1998 old small car I bought for $900, 8 years ago. Spent $800 in maintenance. I drive conservatively and it costs me $70 a month to keep it going i.e. petrol/taxes/insurance etc. It's smelly and dirty but I LOVE my car because it is a testimony to financial wisdom!
+RUserious55 As long as it runs and it gets you where you need to go, then why replace it and get into an unnecessary note? If people don't like what you drive, then they don't have to ride with you.
My favorite story is a car salesman told me about a dental assistant that had purchased a new Dodge Challenger. I asked "how can she afford that expensive of a car on a low wage salary?" He replied, "she lives at home with her parents so didn't have any bills and the payments were her only bills." I guess some people would rather live with their folks and have a nice car than have independence.
I've always bought my cars cash and it not that hard to save I would put $500 a month away and you know how much that equals in a year that's $6,000 and in 2 years that's $12,000 and in just 3 years $18,000 just saying.

My car isn't worth much, and what they'll give me if I crash is not enough for a car. So the most basic insurance that I can get and still drive is what I have. They were charging me crazy amounts for a really old toyota, it's insane. I have also never had an accident or anything like that, that would give me such high rates. These car insurances are out of control. I have a clean driving history and not young either.
The idea of paying a note on a car for 5 years or more is crazy to me. I already hate the idea that I wi have to pay mortgage for 15 years. Atleast after that is over I will longer have to pay rent or mortgage again.
35 years ago I worked for a man who managed a small Ag-supply business. He had run the business since the early 60's and had raised 6 children and put them all through college. He never drove a new car in his life, and was always investing money in something that would pay a dividend, be it stocks, land, a small business on the side. He did have a company truck to drive daily back and forth to work so that saved him greatly, but he was frugal and always gave me great advice, one of the best being... "A new car never made a dime for anyone."
I drive an unattractive $3,000 Toyota corolla with a heart of gold! Own it outright and could easily pay cash for a new car, but put money into savings, index funds, and retirement.
Car makers have priced the middle class out of the new automobile market ! You now have to go 6 to 8 years to get a payment that a working class family can barely make ! Don’t do it
I convinced my friend to buy a $2,500 2002 Honda Civic w/128k on it. He was planning to buy a cheaper used BMW which would have likely turned into a nightmare. I project that he will be able to sell the Civic for little to no loss when he graduates College. Do your homework. Hondas and Toyotas retain value because of the perception of their superior quality. They are also cheap to maintain and some are good on gas.
MrJimmy3459 A BMW is a sexier name than a Honda and a bigger status symbol which kids are naturally drawn to. They foolishly look for style over function.
+Andrew Sellitti It's not always a status thing, but a true love for a car. And BTW, the only people I've ever met concerned with their status is middle age people, not 'KIDS'.
+Bob Hannah Great comment and I totally agree. I am the original owner of a 1999 Toyota Solara. I am still driving it today. It has 202,000 miles and drives pretty much like it did when I bought it. I have been religious about oil changes but really haven't had to do much to it except the regular maintenance items. I've had people offer to buy it over the past couple of years but I can't part with it. I have no desire to buy a new or used luxury car and deal with the high maintenance and repair costs. By the way, I make a very nice income so I love it when people give me weird looks. I believe most of them are up to their eyeballs in debt and in my city leasing cars is the popular option. No way, no thanks. I'll stick with my Toyota. It hasn't let me down yet.
I'm not trying to be rude but cmon who buys a car that's almost as much as u make, and $609 a month? I'm sorry but be smarter no one should think this is okay
Every vehicle loss value but my 99 Honda Accord is still going strong in 2020. I’ve saved 21000 for the past 5 years just for a car I’ll probably get a rav4 or crv and drive for the next 10 years. Ppl need to stop driving car to impress others. I be cruising on my old car debt free and happy.
True. My 10 year old Toyota RAV4 is worth almost $10K. I paid 17K for it 5 years ago but I think that’s a pretty good hold on value. I’m still gonna hold on to it for another 5 years (hopefully) and then buy my next car with cash.
Fantastic! We have had car payments (4 at the same time) up until 8 years ago, when the world come crashing down. Fast forward: We own a 1999 Pontiac Gran Prix we purchased at an Auction for $5,000 8 years ago. We have spent roughly $7,000 over the last 5 years: $1,400 a year, $116 a month average cost of ownership. $147 a year in registration, $672 a year on insurance. All on our Every Dollar budget. Easy. We have looked at new cars every time the repair bill is $1,000 or more, but, this Gran Prix is in very good shape and it just is a please to drive! Fully loaded and we just cringe every time we look at a $500 a month car payment! Thank you God and Ramsey Solutions for staying the course! We are basically driving a refurbished 1999 Gran Prix GTP supercharge 3.8L V-6 fully loaded bad boy, it even has heads up display! The last thing on the list is Rack and Pinion, power steering pump and we are on into Baby step 3 & 4. (Skipping step 5, kids are grown) Thank you so much for being a tremendous blessing to me!

What Dave doesn’t realize is a lot of us goal isn’t to be millionaires most of us know it’s unrealistic but are okay with making 60-80K a year. So making payments on cars and other things is okay. We make payments and still money in bank goes up every month. It’s okay. Not all of us need to pay cash so we can be multi millionaires. That’s all. Love the show though.
@@thunderspence8183 i think this is the thing right here. everybody can make the payments until they can't. its why redudancy insurance should be mandatory when buying a car.

the only vehicle to go up in value is a classic or soon to be classic.i can tell you that because i own one.not a crazy car by any means but its worth thousands more now than what i paid for it and stuck into it and is true with a lot of classics out there.
I live 6 miles away from work I take my 1966 mustang to work everyday not loosing any money on it as its a classic. I can fix it myself (shop owner). Living the dream
Ha! I found an old car loan agreement from yonks ago - have kept it as a reminder not to drive down Stupid Street again - the interest payments should have raised a bunch of red flags - duh.
I sold my car and got on my bicycle and cycled a round trip of 44 miles to and from work. I saved a ton of cash and lost weight. It's my personal gym and never get athletes foot! I live in the UK and apart from sometimes getting soaking wet the weather is mostly ok. Americans sell your cars get on your bike and lose the gut!
I'm thinking that if you want to build wealth you should only spend 5% of your annual income on a car. When you get some money in the bank maybe you can go to 10%
I know with the Air Force they will not allow airman to move out until they hit 3 years in service (or marry). I see it too young military guys buying the most expensive car they can afford to make payments on. I made the same mistake.
People, especially the young ones, DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT PRIORITIES. 30 year old buys a Mustang GT 2017 and lives in a rented 2 1/2 and thinks of moving back with mom and dad cause he can't pay the rent, all goes towards that stupid horse-carriage. WAY TO GO!!! BRAVO!!
I bought a ‘15 Lincoln Mkc 2 years ago and I’ve only paid it down to 20k and the original loan was only 26k! The interest rate was higher than I thought but and that’s what killing me. Planning on refi at a credit union. Just Pd off my c/c so I’m waiting for it show on my credit report so my FICO goes up = lower interest rate.
I'll do a consumer proposal for getting out of my car payment and credit card debt. I know that affect my credit score for couples of year's but it doesn't matter. I want move forward and keep my INCOME.
Update: My Chevy now has 135,500 miles and it's time for me to give it up. It has developed front end issues that will cost nearly $2,000 to fix. And my car isn't even worth a third of that. I talked to friends and family, and they said, "It's time. Get yourself something else.". I'm not sad about it, I've had Ashley (the Chevy) for twelve years.

If he's military, is he living on base? He should consider seeing if there is cheaper housing off base that will allow him to use some of his BAH to get out of debt.
It's extremely rare yet very few cars DO hold their value. For example a 2012 Mercedes sls amg gt still costs the same as it did in 2012. Every other Mercedes do very much depreciate quite quickly.
If you’re In the military and didn’t manage to save money with all the perks that we have.. I’m willing to bet you’re terribly irresponsible with your money.. I lived in the barracks 3 years before I got out.. while everyone went to the tittie bars on weekends I stayed in saved my money bought my car cash saved and invested and got out out debt free with money in my pocket.
look at toyotas and lexuses. they will cost 2 times as much as old 1998-2006 fords, chevys. the reason cars like mercedes, bmw and ford drop so much in value is because repairs get so expensive on them after high mileage.
Kelly Best89 Ford's and Chevy's are hit or miss, some of them are great (Crown Vic being an example) while others are absolute trash (Anything with a Powershit transmission)
"It took a while to make the mess, it'll take a while to clean it up"... Not true. It only takes a day at the dealership to get them to put you in huge debt with a car. If he's active duty military shouldn't they have a loan repayment?
So good tip. We like to show off, but money on cars is the worst investment. Nevertheless, we all need to buy a car as a tool in our working lifes if living in rural areas. I love cars but I came to the same conclusion. So , I do not have car now, I use my 22YO Scott mountain bike and just planning to get a little Suzuki Jimny $5,000-13,500 for the occasional ride. I guess the motor lobby gonna see red on this.

I am a millionaire because I bought a $3,000 truck. I am barely a millionaire. A $50,000 truck is too expensive. If I manage to make another million, I will consider a $50,000 truck.
mikeyvester thats good that your a millionare. I never bashed that. I am just saying that with 1 million dollars u can EASILY afford a 15k truck not 50k. a 3000 dollar truck is a peice of junk. if u just could care less than ok thats fine, but if your sacrificing yourself and not getting a better truck just to save a couple extra thousand when u already have a million is ridiculous. i am not a millionare by the way or even close but am not broke.
And that is why you don;t have a million dollars. Like Dave Ramsey said, anything with a motor looses money. Even though I am a third generation atheist, I know Dave Ramsey's knowledge about finances is universal, not biblical.
I always will recommend old Kia rios in this position. They're ugly but 2006 and onward they're reliable and cheap! On the private market a 2006 goes for around $2k
Dave, I think inflection point is dependent on your personal situation. Both have advantages and problems. Used cars break down and dishonest mechanics are there to fleece you. Renting a car while your car is being repaired, to get to work cost more than they advertise, plus if scratch it going cost you $100's. Also mechanics, if they don't get your business they will sometimes sabotage your car. Both new and used have positive and negative 's.

I’m lucky
Ever since I was 12 I loved bicycles.
Somewhere along the line I realized
How Freakin expensive cars are.
So now I’m 58 and own no car.
Just ride bicycles
i paid $800 for my 92 chevy work van and its the most reliable vehicle ive had. no way am i paying 600$ a month for a new truck. i paid off my 08 f150 last year..that loan taught me to never get another loan again...bank ripoff
The price of new cars now days is unbelievable. If you sat down and figured up the total you spend on cars gas, insurance, repairs and purchase you would decide to ride a bicycle everywhere.
josh smith
People are too lazy to do the math and use common sense.
yeah, try riding a bicycle to work when you live in a rural area 30+ miles from your job and especially in the winter
Agreed, but having a used car to get to work will do just as well as a new car.
Ray Vincent
Yeah. They went from new car straight to bicycle like used cars don't exist.
I'm fascinated how a car salesman can have so much power.
josh smith
I just decided to buy used.
People need to start using their calculators on their smartphones before they start playing angry birds! #wow

“ If a girl likes you because of your car, you’ve got the wrong girl “ hmm. So true!
I don't have much good to say about marriage. It's a bad deal for men in today's America. But if you find a girl who will date you when you are driving a piece of junk she might be a keeper.
good point, homie G
DA Kine
That he should keep the girl or that marriage is a really bad deal these days?
Marriage and that jeep were both bad deals...
Drogo Baggins Agree
Fala Crow
Well you sure do make marriage sound appealing. But I'll still pass. More and more men are doing the same every year. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze.
I just laughed out loud when Dave put his head in his hands.
Dave is soo funny too!
i did too!!!!!

$609 in monthly car payments on a 42k income is beyond stupid. It's criminal.
I feel like an idiot, yesterday I got suckered into buying a new truck I deffi Italy cant afford, I woke up this morning with a panic attack thinking about how the next
9 years of my life will be dedicated to paying this truck off that I barely can afford. Man I'm an idiot
Surely there was a cooling off period? Did you end up taking it back?
@@TylerL2023 ya iv had it for over a year now, had to defer payments during coivid but they are starting up again this pay day :;(

I just love how over the course of these phone calls, the caller tells Dave the main debt problem, then Dave recommends a strategy, then the secondary debt problems get divulged.
+Casey Young and that's why you'll never become wealthy. Read "The Millionaire Next Door"
Sure I will. I can manage my money well. Not gonna wait for something I want when I can buy it right then and be completely fine financially.
That's what they all say
All engineers say that? Lol ok
I asked "how can she afford that expensive of a car on a low wage salary?" He replied, "she lives at home with her parents so didn't have any bills and the payments were her only bills." I guess some people would rather live with their folks and have a nice car than have independence.
johnnnewmex Some people just never get their priorities straight, These days it's all about instant gratification.
You'd be amazed at how many luxury cars are in driveways in "the hood".
I've always bought my cars cash and it not that hard to save I would put $500 a month away and you know how much that equals in a year that's $6,000 and in 2 years that's $12,000 and in just 3 years $18,000 just saying.
Joey Garcia The funny thing is it takes me six weeks to make $500
@@burgerman101 get a better job or get a part time job. I got a part time job and now I can afford a 30k car if I wanted too. I choose to buy $5,000 toyota or honda, in cash. I pay 25-32 in insurance.

@@wpdjs626 the car is only insured to cover the other car and driver. If it's wrecked and it's my fault, I have to buy a new car out of pocket. My car isn't worth much, and what they'll give me if
I crash is not enough for a car. So the most basic insurance that I can get and still drive is what I have. They were charging me crazy amounts for a really old toyota, it's insane. I have also never had an accident or anything like that, that would give me such high rates. These car insurances are out of control. I have a clean driving history and not young either.
" Your cars are insane." Love Dave's car rants.
This is the rich dad poor dad lesson!
Sir, thanks for your valuable piece of advice. It really opened my eyes. I don't need a car which I can't afford. And yeah she is not the one 😊
How much do u have n retirement
How brain dead do you have to be to buy a car with a $35k note when you pull in a little over $40k per year of household income.....???
The best part about buying a cheap used car is that it comes with door dings and you no longer care where you park
Car makers have priced the middle class out of the new automobile market ! You now have to go 6 to 8 years to get a payment that a working class family can barely make ! Don’t do it
Videos like makes me realize not to be jealous of my boss who just bought a new house and a 50k truck
Bob Hannah Why on earth would he want a BMW, those things are nothing but money pits!
MrJimmy3459
A BMW is a sexier name than a Honda and a bigger status symbol which kids are naturally drawn to.
Bob Hannah mostly maintains its value because they are so cheap anyways.
I'm not trying to be rude but cmon who buys a car that's almost as much as u make, and $609 a month? I'm sorry but be smarter no one should think this is okay
$609 for the loan payment, and then tack on the $200+ per month for the full coverage insurance. It turns into a money pit in no time at all.
@@jutde have you had a bunch of wrecks? 200/mo even for full coverage is crazy high.
Honda's and Toyota hold their value well
Militant KANE they still go down in value year after year just not as fast as other makes.

1:19 - What's your household income? The look on Dave's face.
(Skipping step 5, kids are grown)
Thank you so much for being a tremendous blessing to me!
Timothy Harris I used to have a 2000 GTP awesome car loved it. Dang hail storm smashed it up
I need to watch this before I buy my next car

+MrBreeze CARS are grossly overpriced.
No ! It's wages
+peartfaldo No, You can get a 99 Camry for 1.8k, and a 99 F-150 truck for 2k ... a Jeep of the same year could cost 5-10 grand.

My grandfather's 67 Camaro and 70 Road Runner increase in value as they sit in a garage. I know what he saying though beside that
Exactly! I know what he was saying too but he forget the vintage exception.
My little 5k Corolla isn't much to look at, but I really like my payment. $0 👍🏻

use the three times over rule ,only buy a car if u can buy it three times over , if u make 30 grand ayear get a 10 thousand dollar car or maybe 15
i agree.. no more than %25 of gross yearly income.
+working shlub disagree it should be at least 25% of money you have already.
I needed to hear this
The only cars that go up in value are classics
I’m in the Navy. I drive a 1987 Chris Ose aka my own two legs. Yes I don’t worry about money anymore.
I ride a 1990 shoelace express when my 02 silverado in getting fixed.
That’s all. Love the show though.
in some other cases, he states what happens if you lose your job
@@thunderspence8183 i think this is the thing right here. everybody can make the payments until they can't. its why redudancy insurance should be mandatory when buying a car.

the in the military we have a culture of debt and borrowing
Yes indeed!
the only vehicle to go up in value is a classic or soon to be classic.i can tell you that because i own one.not a crazy car by any means but its worth thousands more now than what i paid for it and stuck into it and is true with a lot of classics out there.
I live 6 miles away from work I take my 1966 mustang to work everyday not loosing any money on it as its a classic. I can fix it myself (shop owner). Living the dream
Lol hes hilarious asf! "Youve got the wrong girl bubba"
+lincolncity9 NEVER!!! lol
how do you lose weight on a motorcycle m
I'm thinking that if you want to build wealth you should only spend 5% of your annual income on a car. When you get some money in the bank maybe you can go to 10%
I know with the Air Force they will not allow airman to move out until they hit 3 years in service (or marry). I see it too young military guys buying the most expensive car they can afford to make payments on. I made the same mistake.
Thank You for the Advice Dave Ramsey GOD BLESS YOU
Subbed after dropping that good knowledge
As soon as he said if you want to be broke keep buying cars a car dealerships commercial came on
People, especially the young ones, DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT PRIORITIES.
My Bicycle does me well amen.

We just picked up a Cts Vsport for 40k and its already dropped to 34k market value from its MSRP of 72+k
If he's military, is he living on base? He should consider seeing if there is cheaper housing off base that will allow him to use some of his BAH to get out of debt.
Cars have been my primary money mistakes.
I lived in the barracks 3 years before I got out.. while everyone went to the tittie bars on weekends I stayed in saved my money bought my car cash saved and invested and got out out debt free with money in my pocket.
look at toyotas and lexuses. they will cost 2 times as much as old 1998-2006 fords, chevys. the reason cars like mercedes, bmw and ford drop so much in value is because repairs get so expensive on them after high mileage.
horacechin1 ford and chevy do not make quality cars, foreign cars last a lottttttt longer
Kelly Best89 Ford's and Chevy's are hit or miss, some of them are great (Crown Vic being an example) while others are absolute trash (Anything with a Powershit transmission)
I'm looking at a used Honda CR-Z for $8-10k that's a hybrid and good on gas rather than brand new -insert car- that would be $20k-50k.
You need to want money and things that appreciate more than tossing money at the next “good deal”. There will always be another “good deal”
"Like a rock!..." love it lol...
"It took a while to make the mess, it'll take a while to clean it up"... Not true. It only takes a day at the dealership to get them to put you in huge debt with a car.
If he's active duty military shouldn't they have a loan repayment?
Practical cars don't hold their value albeit classic/collectible cars do usually appreciate in value.
I guess the motor lobby gonna see red on this.
at age 55, I am now on my 7th vehicle. my current car is a 2008 civic, and is the only one that I bought as new. I paid it off in under two years.
my comment says that I bought the 2008 civic new, that was eight years ago. So this idiot paid off his new car in two years.
+Mike Nelson if its a $3k car what idiot would pay that off in two years rather than couple of months check?
wow, I'm 39 and already on my 9th and 10th cars.... but I live in a very rural area and it only takes me 5 years to put 100k miles on a car just by driving to and from work, plus my wife has wrecked 2.... but out of those 10 only 2 of them have been brand new
Many Credit Unions have repos that they have for sale.
I am a fairly recent millionaire and I just bought a truck. A 20 year old truck. $3,000 for the truck and repairs to make it safe. I will never buy a new truck or car ever again.
I do have a 2011 car. The $3000 truck is temporary. I am using it to haul some junk. I plan to get rid of it before the end of the year.
mikeyvester well that makes sense. i thought u had 1 million dollars and just had a 3000 truck. lol
And that is why you don;t have a million dollars. Like Dave Ramsey said, anything with a motor looses money. Even though I am a third generation atheist, I know Dave Ramsey's knowledge about finances is universal, not biblical.
7:47 I mean seriousl! Dave earned it, and y'all are jealous of successful people that could do whatever as they're wealthy.
Thank you I really needed to hear that.
I always will recommend old Kia rios in this position. They're ugly but 2006 and onward they're reliable and cheap! On the private market a 2006 goes for around $2k
what about classic cars, spend a pretty penny on them will they stay the same , go up , go down little?
Dave, I think inflection point is dependent on your personal situation. Both have advantages and problems. Used cars break down and dishonest mechanics are there to fleece you. Renting a car while your car is being repaired, to get to work cost more than they advertise, plus if scratch it going cost you $100's. Also mechanics, if they don't get your business they will sometimes sabotage your car. Both new and used have positive and negative 's.
