I asked a woman at work why she wanted to buy a new suv. She didn't even want to trade her older volvo in. She told me, "So I can put my kids in it." I told her that she could put her kids in the volvo...She only has 2 children. She then started to get mad at me. Smh, some people are just destined for bad outcomes.
*****- I basically bought some carbon fiber wrap heated it over the hood and the trunk. It's not actually carbon fiber, it's actually just a sticker that's been heated on and it makes the car look cool. I've got a lot of compliments and one stranger wanted to buy it on the spot when he saw it. I also tinted the windows, and put some custom halogen front lights on it to make it look newer. On the inside I installed a radio with a flip screen and back camera with blue tooth and DVD. Then I installed some lights inside the car for effects. All of that might've costed a little over $2,500. But hey, I had the money with my $1,000 emergency fund saved in the bank. Now that I think about it, I could've invested in that money but I'm doing that now. So it's all good.
+Davis Kayumba I got a 2004 hyundai sonata .. it's a decent car for the prize. The most important thing about having a car is to make sure you maintain it. A $2500 car can last you a good while if you take care of it.

At least they aren't buying a new car that they can't afford. Think of what they can do with the $300-500 dollars per month they aren't giving a finance company.

I got into an argument with a friend who believes that everyone is entitled to a new car and new house. He thinks that ever person at any full time job should be able to support a family and have these things. Its completely ridiculous. Not surprisingly he is going nowhere in life.
"He thinks that ever person at any full time job should be able to support a family and have these things." Yes, very ridiculous... Yet this used to be how it is. Work a full time job, get a house, a car and support a family. That was 60 years ago. Very ridiculous. Fast forward another 60 years from now and what do you get for working a full time job?

Legit. A van is awesome. I low key want to buy a used Honda van. A few years back, when I worked my second job, I helped load customers vehicle with furniture . And a lot had those vans. Wow . Everything lays flat. There's an immense amount of empty space . Plus the chairs are super comfy. I'm a big guy (255)and that was just amazing.
I make $90K a year, and I drive a 20 year old truck which i bought for $4000 cash. sometimes I think a newer car would be nice, then I sit down, pencil out how much my monthly payments would be, plus insurance, registration, and maintenance... then I would say no. I spend $60 a week in gas, $600 insurance a year... and $60 insurance. life is good when you can live with less. cheers!
Why not just pay cash for a new car, that’s what I did, best decision I ever made! There is absolutely nothing like a new car and if you go through your life driving trash box vehicles then your not really living
One guy got on me for tricking out my Grand AM. I payed a few hundred. Later on in the year, he buys a car for $40,000. and has a car note of almost $600.
college of mine was always laughing about my cheap old car (paid in cash) one day he came to work, having bought a new car. ofcourse started bragging about it, and laughing about my car again. i asked him, who payed the car? you or the bank. let's just say, he didn't talk to me for a week, and never laughed about my car again
Also in 2021. When I go to CA and see all of the people driving brand new BMWs, I’m always wondering how many of those people can actually afford those cars.
you can be laid off /fired with no notice at most jobs..remember that. i drive a 92 chevy work van i paid $800 for and it runs great. you have to be ready for that unexpected financial downturn. you dont have to be a super cheapskate but.. use common sense.
Honestly if you do the math, the cheapest long term answer to buying a car is to get a brand new version of a very cheap/reliable model like a corrola or elantra. It's only the cheapest option if you can afford to not finance it. You will pay virtually nothing for gas, insurance, or repairs, and even though you get a lower return on resale because of the depreciation, the exchange is that you get to keep the car longer with no issues. When I did the math on my ownership of a 10+ old car, I found that the amount I spent on repairs was greater than the cost of depreciation on a new car. And don't forget the only expense worse than repairing a car is replacing a car. The longer you put that off the better off you are.
yes i'm a moron, thank you Dave dont remind me, this year i finish paying the damn car, wont buy a new one till the freaking thing falls apart screw ppl and "appearances", could have saved myself so much bs and $.
I drive a 4k car, 2007, my coworkers most of them drive a 2017 and up, I make almost double of what they make, on mondays they asking me for $20 to put gas on their new car. Funny part on fridays they laugh about my old car. What they dont know is that I almost have my 3rd new house finish and paid off.
Amen to this! We have NEVER bought a new car and my wife and I are in our 40s and well off. It makes absolutely no sense. We only financed one car ever, a 7 y/o van that ended up being a TOTAL money pit. We just paid cash for a second vehicle and will NEVER NEVER finance a car again. Our stepdaughter on the other hand bought a new $20K car 5 seconds out of college and will likely never pay it off before she trades in to a new one in 5 years. Sad sad sad that people think they need to buy a "nice reliable new automobile" to get to work to pay for the automobile. Makes no sense.
A relative of mine recently paid off the last of his payday loans. Then he financed a new car for 5 years. He’s 70. When I asked him why he did that, he said he hadn’t had a new car in a long time and that he didn’t want to take any chances on a used car. Some people really don’t want to stay out of debt. They’d rather take the easy way out.
Bought my 1st car when I was 30! That too a 10 year old one. I was using public transport before that. At times I have waited for hours for a bus. I know for sure that it is doable. I agree with Dave. The new smell of a new car wears off far too quickly. That smell really costs you a few thousand dollars though.
My car is a 2005 Buick Lesabre. It’s totally paid off and I drive it with pride to my job where all my coworkers are driving new/leased cars. My Ramsey-mobile has saved me thousands of dollars and helped me get out of debt! I’m gonna drive it till the wheels fall off.
Thats why you buy a good used car! Our family bought a 1998 malibu with 80k miles for around $2k. This car is in perfect shape and will last a long time, and it gets 28mpg. You dont need a "new" car.
True Dave....bus passes doesn't also include interest rate and so on. I'm still taking the bus, BUT on the verge of Babystep 1 and being debit free....and when then only I'm going to get a USED car, by cash. Thanks Dave.
Of course he is right. It is a shame that personal financial education isn't taught in schools. Maybe this country wouldn't be in the financial shape that it is in.
My sister financed a £16000 car 1 year ago and decided that she was too good for the car because it was the type of car that young idiots in call centres would spend their whole years pay on and shes a nurse earning £23000 a year (18000 after tax and NI) so shes financed a mercedes A class for £26000 over 4 years so she can look better than other people. She is 25 and has no savings after putting down the deposit. After interest on the car loan it will cost £30000 and mercedes only gave her £10000 for the 1 year old car so over 5 years she will have spent £36000 on cars which is double her current take home pay. Hows that for stupidity?
I always thought of the UK as a very public transportation friendly place. Was a car even necessary for her to get around? I have only been to London so I don't know much about transportation outside of there.
inkey2 she got a large nail through the tyre after a few months and it cost £180 for a single 18 inch low profile tyre. As a comparison a tyre for my clio costs £40
Its not really a good comparison because the A class has went from a horrible looking box to a nice looking hatchback but you can buy one for £6000 with 20000 miles on the clock and 3 years old. For the decent model the cheapest with decent mileage is 14000 with 30000 miles. If you dont care about looking better than people then you can get nice cars for waaaay less. The best depreciation in the uk is for a vauxhall insignia which is a decent saloon but there is so many of them there is a huge list of them at £6000-8000 that have low mileage. When they are new the decent spec models are 20000+. I dont understand how people can throw so much money away
I just recently did a voluntary repo/return and honestly it was actually a relief. It was so stressful trying to keep up with something I couldn't afford. I can actually breath a little and even have extra money for my household. Thank God my wife and I have another vehicle we can share. I hate that that I lost the car but i consider it as just a hard lesson. My next car will definitely be paid for in cash!
good advice! I got my first car used (borrowed the money from my parents) and paid them back within a year, and it still runs 10 years later! Fingers crossed for another 10 years!
Husband & I just bought our first new car, only took 36 years! Always bought used and kept them til they died. This car (Toyota Camry) will be with us for at least 10 - 15 years. We were able to retire early because we Always lived below our means. If you can't pay your credit card off in full each month then you are buying things you Can't Afford! Don't do it. The couples we know who are broke: eat fast food often, shop a lot, and always had new cars. They will be working forever and have no future to look forward to. Don't be that person. Don't try to impress others or try to make yourself (or your kids) happy by buying things you can't afford. You'll also be teaching your kids how to be broke too. ( I''ve seen that too.) Then who will take care of you when you're too old to work and you have no money in the bank? Start today on a new path!
Retired @ 57 W/ NO debt ( including house paid off in 11 years ) working a part time job I love. NEVER owned a new car. Being debt free is necessary for freedom.
I was doing Dave Ramsey at age 19 in the Army...then I THOUGHT that my paid off car with 70,000 miles wouldn't get me home to see my girlfriend 9 hrs. away. Was scared I'd break down along the way, so I financed a car much like the article at 18% interest. Dumb...dumb...dumb. Then I got married and had a baby, and needed a bigger car. Rolled negative equity into a new SUV...and the cycle just continued. So stupid.
I bought my '83 Mercedes 300d in 2013. I spent several thousand making it run and drive correctly. much better than a new car. I'll never have a car payment!
That is the stupidest thing I have heard all day. I bought a car certified and etested for $1400 CAD over 4 years ago and have only spent a total of $1500 in repairs. This includes the cost of new tires, which was about $500. The biggest repair was replacing the 2 front wheel bearings which was about $500.
I get why people want new cars these days, saftey is one for a start. The safety side of cars, especially European models like Audi/BMW are absolutely fantastic!!
Honestly, a 1990 4Runner is a much cooler car than a new Honda CRV. A 1994 Civic is way cooler than a new Ford Focus. New cars are pretty lame for the most part. There’s comes a pride of keeping an old car going.
Nah anybody that says that is completely jealous of the people who can afford to buy new cars, new cars are a million times better then old cars in every single way so stop being envious and just buy the new car you’ve always dreamed of, you only live once
I have used a bicycle for transport at many times in life. When I was in college and working full time I rode my bike across town 5-6 days/week to get to work. I also used a bike to commute to work for over 5 years because work was less than 2 miles from my house and though I made $70k/yr it made no sense to drive. If you are truly broke, not owning a car is a GREAT way to save money. The only catch is you should consider getting a living situation near your employment if that is feasible.
I work with a guy who borrowed money off family and took out loans to buy a sport car because it was worth 60K and he got it for the bargain price of 50K.
Find a car auction in your area, if you or you have a friend that has mechanical skills that's a plus. Brought one new car in my life, been there done that.
I bought a Chevy Equinox 2005 145miles for 2,300 . am happy with it. Runs for me 5 years i know. I promise myself i will never get into car payment till i become rich , btw not need car payment if u are rich. Thanks Dave!
Dave's afterburners let off at 4:00 min....I WANT a new truck but DON'T have the cash..I will have to keep driving my 97 E 350 Ford I bought in 99 with 43k on it , which now has 362k.... Still runnin strong. Other things to Invest in other than cars. Like my family's future.
Thanks for the thumbs up. Please don't use racial epithets at all when doing so. I met him personally on many occasions volunteering at his shows. He wouldn't appreciate it either. Thanks again.
Everyone forgets owner expense plus taxes attached: Personal property tax, Registration + tax, License fees + tax, Inspection + tax, Insurance + tax, Mechanical Maintenance +tax (parts, labor & environmental fluid disposal fees), Tolls/Parking Fees +tax & Gas+tax. New 28-42 % value is annual owner expense used 10-28% value after 10 yrs old. Owning expense if have tools, knowledge & maintain self reducing cost then close to lower end owning. Every aspect owning is tax revenue based. Old car expect tax for insufficient fuel economy or smog (clean air - environmental tax). The latter tax suppose increase development public transport -- last looked that hasn't occur in 25 yrs but auto industry bailouts did!
I really think you have to hate making car payments. Which I do. My husband and I had a brand new car when we were first married and we did not make the money that we should to afford the car. Every time I would roll up to the bank to make the payment I got a sinking feeling in my stomach looking at that coupon book and all of those coupons left to pay. We never did it again. The problem with buying things you can’t afford is that I put you in crisis mode. You continue making poor financial decisions because you run out of options. I hope some newly married people reading this might benefit from hearing this. Fortunately we learned our lessons and we’ve been married almost 25 years now.
A six year car loan! I worked for a car dealership 25 year ago. One memory stands out in my mind. A salesman figured out a way to get a customer a six year loan (unknown at the time) and as the proud new owner drove away he said, "A six year loan! In six years that thing will not be worth as much as the final payment!"
Cars last longer today than they did 25 years ago. A 7-year car loan on a new reliable sub-compact isn't necessarily a bad decision for a young upwardly-mobile person.
The car is worth less than you owe on it for too long of a time. Don't go into debt for things that go down in value. If your income is increasing, then save up enough to buy a 2-year-old car with cash. In fact, I bought a 2-year-old car with cash, then three years later, my wife bought a new dealer demo with cash.
Dave Ramsey has that attitude of if you’re any something in life you gotta work for it. The world doesn’t owe you anything. That was the way of life when I was growing up and I still live by that motto. This new entitled generation is what pisses me off. I work full time and go to school full time. I have no time for anything fun of course but I know if you work hard in life it generally pays off in the long run. I drive a rusted old car that I payed $1400 for and it drives and runs just fine. I love not having to worry about car payments and gas. Especially in school I can’t afford it. I couldn’t care less what people think as long as I can get to where I need to be I’m fine.
I'm sure this will show up in Dave's study as well, but the millionaire study they did 20 years ago showed that most millionaires either bought used or standard new cars: Ford, GM, Toyota. Not expensive ones.
Bought a 20 yearly old Lexus ES 300 from old lady (paid cash). Now pay just 34 dollar insurance. Before I paid 110 insurance monthly. Lexus drive like new . No more monthly payment and compulsory stupid high insurance.
@4:05 This is the first time I've seen Dave's tone suddenly go from an ascending level of screaming to Dalai Lama-like control. A new side of Dave. 50 shades of Dave. Dave is a legend.
Drove a hooptie until I turned 20. Bought my first new car at that time right before I joined the military. Honda civic DX paid $14k. Manual transmission, am/fm radio, and no power steering. Drove it for 12 years. It was the most reliable vehicle that I have EVER driven. Very easy to maintain. These cars now are so much more complicated with all this technology. Having said that, being in my 40's now and making a heck of a lot more than I used to, I really like the technology in my paid off truck. Work hard and buy what you can afford!
Where I live there aren't any buses. I live outside of Pittsburgh. Years ago, there was. Now they run in around the city. 10 miles from town you need a car. Now it doesn't have to be a new car. 🎉
I know a real estate millionaire who is such a tightwad, he doesn't even own a car any more. he also wanted me to do work for him for substantially less than I charged everyone else. I stopped returning his phone calls.
I drove a 1991 Buick Park Avenue ten years ago (in 2005) , now I drive a 2006 Nissan Altima which I bought used in 2007. Still drive it to this day, eight years later. 8/10/15
Are we entitled to a new car? I think we are as long as someone else pays for it. One of our cars is a 1999 Jeep with 300K miles. The other is a 2003 Ford Taurus with 100K miles. We have $600K in the bank and we're not buying a new or newer car until one of these can't be fixed or dies. Cars are transportation, nothing more.
I asked a woman at work why she wanted to buy a new suv. She didn't even want to trade her older volvo in. She told me, "So I can put my kids in it." I make $90K a year, and I drive a 20 year old truck which i bought for $4000 cash. sometimes I think a newer car would be nice, then I sit down, pencil out how much my monthly payments would be, plus insurance, registration, and maintenance... then I would say no.
@@vinniedeluca2188 because they lose 30 percent of the value the minute you drive off the lot
One guy got on me for tricking out my Grand AM. I payed a few hundred. Later on in the year, he buys a car for $40,000. and has a car note of almost $600.
college of mine was always laughing about my cheap old car (paid in cash)
one day he came to work, having bought a new car.
ofcourse started bragging about it, and laughing about my car again.
i asked him, who payed the car? you or the bank.
let's just say, he didn't talk to me for a week, and never laughed about my car again
5:17 "I can't breathe." My face is hot from laughing so hard!! I love Dave's rants...
The best part was when he said before that how I’m sure you can find the constitution that everyone deserves a Honda Civic 😂
I have a 1998 Honda Civic. Still runs great!
I think you deserve integra type r ,for spending wisely
Ben Chesterman 2 years later and I still have this car. It still runs great too.
I think I have the same car. 1998 civic dx with Manual locks and hand crank windows. FYI I am debt free and will paying off my mortgage next month.
1998 that's like new, I have a 1988 Honda Accord. If I taped a nickel to it, it would double in value. Good little car though.
LiveLikeBrittney do you still have the car? Eager to know
Watching this in 2018, couldn’t be more relevant.
2.1.2020, even scarier
Also in 2021. When I go to CA and see all of the people driving brand new BMWs, I’m always wondering how many of those people can actually afford those cars.
I've been this dumb and shallow. Financed a 50k pickup when I had no use for one. Sold it and now I drive a 500 dollar car 😁
you can be laid off /fired with no notice at most jobs..remember that. i drive a 92 chevy work van i paid $800 for and it runs great. you have to be ready for that unexpected financial downturn. you dont have to be a super cheapskate but.. use common sense.
Way to Go, one thing thro I WOULDN'T give them ANY gas money. With them making fun of you.
John Adams Because there's a lot of people that actually view cars as more than just a device to get you somewhere.
I got my 98 Toyota for 800 bucks, 133k still drives like a champ
Thats why you buy a good used car! Our family bought a 1998 malibu with 80k miles for around $2k. This car is in perfect shape and will last a long time, and it gets 28mpg. You dont need a "new" car.
"What you believe about anything nobody gives a rip". I LOVE IT!
True Dave....bus passes doesn't also include interest rate and so on. I'm still taking the bus, BUT on the verge of Babystep 1 and being debit free....and when then only I'm going to get a USED car, by cash. Thanks Dave.
The answer can be summed up quite nicely with one single word-NOOOOO! Thank you Nathan Explosion!
My father left me a car after his death, keeping it up and saving money for my retirement
Good job!
I love Dave! He's so funny to listen too. He's so right also.
Of course he is right. It is a shame that personal financial education isn't taught in schools. Maybe this country wouldn't be in the financial shape that it is in.
Dave Ramsey, I don’t know if this message will reach to you or not, but I just want to say, that I love you.
He probably lives with his parents rent free
+Brett G wait till she needs a repair that's not on warranty. It will cost a kings ransom
inkey2 she got a large nail through the tyre after a few months and it cost £180 for a single 18 inch low profile tyre.
I dont understand how people can throw so much money away
she's brainwahed
I just recently did a voluntary repo/return and honestly it was actually a relief. It was so stressful trying to keep up with something I couldn't afford. I can actually breath a little and even have extra money for my household. Thank God my wife and I have another vehicle we can share. I hate that that I lost the car but i consider it as just a hard lesson. My next car will definitely be paid for in cash!
The worst accidents happen on the showroom floor..Gold.....
good advice!
So stupid.
Thanks Dave for setting me straight.
I cannot stand people who get a loan for a brand new 35k car and then a year later trade it in for another 40k car. I'm like dude wtf is wrong with u
If it’s your money then you’re entitled to buy whatever you want. But there will be consequences.
I bought my '83 Mercedes 300d in 2013. I spent several thousand making it run and drive correctly. much better than a new car. I'll never have a car payment!
I make about $1,000,000 per month and drive a rusty 1974 Ford Pinto with 500,000 miles on it. Cost me just $0.75.
The problem with buying a $3000 car is that you end up paying $500 a month on repairs!
Buy a $10000 car then . You can pick up a s4 for that
That is the stupidest thing I have heard all day. I bought a car certified and etested for $1400 CAD over 4 years ago and have only spent a total of $1500 in repairs. This includes the cost of new tires, which was about $500. The biggest repair was replacing the 2 front wheel bearings which was about $500.
$20000 you could buy a decent mileage e39 m5 or e55 amg
I get why people want new cars these days, saftey is one for a start. The safety side of cars, especially European models like Audi/BMW are absolutely fantastic!!
I love the way Dave just tells it like it is! 😂
1:39 Classic! That knowing look to all of the hardcore Dave listeners. Awesome
Great job Dave. Most Americans don't have basic financial knowledge. You are educating a lot of people.
I work with a guy who borrowed money off family and took out loans to buy a sport car because it was worth 60K and he got it for the bargain price of 50K.
last new car I had was in 1993. had it for at least 10 years and over 300k miles. I worked a full-time and part time job.
Preach, nigga!
Thanks for the thumbs up. Please don't use racial epithets at all when doing so. I met him personally on many occasions volunteering at his shows. He wouldn't appreciate it either. Thanks again.
Sorry :(
Everyone forgets owner expense plus taxes attached: Personal property tax, Registration + tax, License fees + tax, Inspection + tax, Insurance + tax, Mechanical Maintenance +tax (parts, labor & environmental fluid disposal fees), Tolls/Parking Fees +tax & Gas+tax.
Jim Roscovius You aren't making your case.
My wrx sti is 18 years old , guess what didn't need parts replaced last service . Pay 10k more for a old car with low km you won't go wrong
Everybody thinks they need a car. If you have no kids have you ever considered driving a moped? You could save a lot of money that way.
"Your half of average. No-one gives a rip what you think". Hysterical. I love Dave's candour.
I am well off and I still drive beaters that I pay cash for. But, I do have a $12,000 bicycle which I paid cash for.
mikeyvester i have a client that has a 20k bicycle 😂😂
@4:05 This is the first time I've seen Dave's tone suddenly go from an ascending level of screaming to Dalai Lama-like control. A new side of Dave. 50 shades of Dave. Dave is a legend.
average car is unaffordable because people are able to take out loans. without loans there would be pickups for 20k new
Drove a hooptie until I turned 20. Work hard and buy what you can afford!
why would anyone give this video a "thumbs down"? It makes total sense what Dave Ramsey said.
Omg I can’t breathe 😂😂😂Dave is a legend! Such a wise man! Thanks for schooling and guiding!
Nothing gets me working as this angel does ❤
I realize my financial situation isn't so bad after hearing people get robbed into these car payments
Where I live there aren't any buses. I live outside of Pittsburgh. Years ago, there was. Now they run in around the city. 10 miles from town you need a car. Now it doesn't have to be a new car. 🎉
Ya grab the business end of a shovel! Awesome point and agree 100%. Well said Dave
thank you uncle dave ill keep driving my 95 civic until i have enough money to pay for a new one cash!!
"i can't breathe." hahaha, great reaction by Dave.
I know a real estate millionaire who is such a tightwad, he doesn't even own a car any more. he also wanted me to do work for him for substantially less than I charged everyone else. I stopped returning his phone calls.
The worst car accidents happen on the showroom floor 😂😂😂
No way Jose 😂😂
Yes..I agree..........GET a job...if you want a cell phone/or CAR....and get one you can AFFORD...duh!!
I had an ad before this video for new jaguar Ipace. I love that car.
I didn’t buy my first new car until I owned my house. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out that a new car is a luxury. Can’t fix stupid.
Alot of pple in America have a high salary and are broke in debt, crazy!
mom gave me her 2006 honda back in 2013..still driving it and will drive until it literally cannot start
I drove a 1991 Buick Park Avenue ten years ago (in 2005) , now I drive a 2006 Nissan Altima which I bought used in 2007. Still drive it to this day, eight years later. 8/10/15
Did I hear that right? The definition of making it in this country is the car you drive?
Dave Ramsey: I cant breathe.
Dave Ramsey is freaking hilarious
I FUCKING LOVE THIS MAN. U ROCK DAVE. SORRY FOR THE CURSE WORD. I GOT EXCITED. LOL
You should treat yourself with a new car - AKA, You should treat yourself with debt. New cars get old, freedom from debt NEVER gets old!
One of his funniest yet! Oh my gosh he's hilarious. And I agree with everything he said
Are we entitled to a new car? I think we are as long as someone else pays for it.
One of our cars is a 1999 Jeep with 300K miles. The other is a 2003 Ford Taurus with 100K miles.
We have $600K in the bank and we're not buying a new or newer car until one of these can't be fixed or dies.
Cars are transportation, nothing more.
