    This is super impressive. Your workshop probably has a better EPC (Energy performance rating.), than my house. The only thing more impressive that that, is how you kept those white shoes so clean when mixing concrete.

    Lovely build, if you ever decide to use it for weight lifting I’d recommend getting foam yoga mats 2ft by 2ft, my floor was 1ft of concrete (base) but I put yoga mats on top of it more heat and less noise, next on my list is to PVC cladding my walls then just to put some aluminium tin foil padded sheets on my roof to stop condensation as my roof is plastic clear pvc sheets so there’s afew raindrops in places

    In 2021 got my old 1970s pre cast concrete garage converted into a craft room, 4 weeks from removing asbestos room , stud wall. Insulation, flat roof with edpm felt , double glazing, lighting, 3 double power sockets with usb, cat6 network, hard wired to the router. Ecotile hard wearing flooring, need pvc side door, garage is located at the bottom of the garden

    So we have a fairly old concrete panel detached garage on our property and wanna convert it into a music rehearsal space (or at least make it water tight at the bottom for our music equipment which is currently fighting for its life there. And there is ZERO way we could afford a pro refurb. And this video has given me WAY TOO MUCH confidence that with a bit of planning and a LOT of learning we could so do this ourselves…. My partners dad is an engineer who rebuilds cars and stuff… and his stepdad is quite handy- so at least we have some back up if we cock it up

    Coming from a garage conversion company this raises some serious questions! That floor is going to rot within months, it has no way to breathe.
    Walls, an insulated stud wall with a min 40mm cavity from the concrete is a minimum

      I'm thinking because he sealed the floor that's retarding any moisture ingress through the concrete. It looked like it was regular wood, should have been pressure treated, so over the long hall it may be a problem but perhaps it will be fine.

    Job well done! At last someone has done a decent sectional concrete garage conversion video. I am about to drop the hammer on my own garage conversion and have been searching for solutions to the many problems this type of conversion brings. My last sticking point are the roof members to support the plasterboard/insulation. Have you set a wooden beam running along the join of roof and walls in order to fix your rafters to? I was going to use the existing metal roof supports and attach perlins and rafters to those but I am worried about the weight on them and the large gap to span.

    • @No5Workshop
      @No5Workshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were already some timber running perpendicular to the corrugation of the roof sheets. So I screwed some battens onto those timbers after stapling some breathable membranes directly below the roofing sheets to prevent condensation. Hopefully 04:14 gives you a better idea.

    Lovely looking job. This may be a stupid question but should the plastic membrane be on the inside, will the heat from inside the garage not condense on the membrane, or am I understanding this incorrectly (which is highly likely). Should the membrane be between the inside of the garage and the insulation?. I ask as I am planning to do this myself.

The walls I think I'd of run all the electrics (sockets etc) then dot and dabbed over it (dry wall) either tape and fill or plastered it. Also for strength you should of staggered the floor. I noticed the ends weren't on the wood frame work you made on the floor you should allow for that to help support the joins. Good job though looks nice

    • @No5Workshop
      @No5Workshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The garage panels are fastened together with some bolts. I temporarily removed the bolts, attach the bolt with a joining plate and put the bolt back. I then screwed the battens to the joining plate only. So no drilling to the concrete wall is required. I shot some footage but unfortunately I lost them. 😞

    Is there a reason that you chose to put a breathable membrane against the walls and behind the insulation? I'm doing the same project but others suggest the insulation should be on the warm side of the insulation (in the UK). I thought about doing both, but it seems that makes things even worse... confused!

    • @No5Workshop
      @No5Workshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I used the Rockwool insulation it's not water proof. I'm afraid of condensation on the concrete panel getting into the insulation.

      @@TomStratton On a house you would have, brickwork -> Cavity -> breathable Membrane+OSB-> then insulation between studs-> Vapour barrier ->plasterboard.
      So if worried, you could do the same, sandwhich it between. Stops moisture getting from inside the garage into your insulation. And stops moisture from the concrete outside wall getting into it also. Perhaps you would have to vent between the concrete panels and membrane though, not sure.

    • @easternbrown
      @easternbrown 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The risk with the build in the video is that warm and moist internal air reaches the vapour barrier on the cold side of the insulation and condenses. In practice if you are not occupying the space too long, it's not heated and there is reasonable ventilation then maybe it might never prove a big problem. If you have a humidity source for the air in the garage, like if you use it to dry your laundry inside, then it could be. Nice video anyway!

    Great video. Did you need sign off re building regulations for this? I'm sat here with the tools and materials but stumped by whether I can actually start or not. All I want to do is insulate and floor the garage and put up an internal stud wall covering the garage door (from the inside) so it is a bit more habitable but everywhere I look it says something different!

    • @No5Workshop
      @No5Workshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi I didn't apply building reg because it's not a habitable place. To my understanding the building needs to have at least electricity and water to be habitable. But it may vary depending on different area.
