*Magnus's grandpa watches intensely over his shoulder at **2:47** I can just hear him telepathically saying "Boy, if you lose; you're outta the family."*
Well, since Tarrasch introduced this about 1 century ago, it is obvious the opening is sound. But of course Magnus wants openings that give him the chance to fight for advantage. After this game, we also can check that idea off the list. It is fair to say Magnus won this game by about 1 tempi, but you honestly cannot expect more than that from an opening with Black, when you are playing elite grandmasters.
Does anyone know the chess sets that were used in this tournament? I am looking to purchase one. I love the thickness of the board and the space of the squares and the size of the chess pieces.
They use the Serial Tournament e-Board from digitalgametechnology (DGT). If you do not need the electronic capabilities, they offer a non-electronic set with the same design as the popular DGT Walnut e-Board.
I am not saying I know more than Magnus, but his move order to reach the Tarrasch is surprising unless there's some development weaker chess players like myself don't know. As far as I know, 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c5 4. cxd5 exd5 5. Nf3 Nc6 is the Tarrasch black wants to reach with the knight on c6 instead of f6, to avoid the immediate pin with Bg5. I think Wojtaszek knew his stuff, played the opening well, and had an advantage, so perhaps Carlsen wanted to get something fighting but objectively inferior for blitz? Like playing the Albin perhaps, though not as extreme of a case.
If you see the move orders, Carlsen doesn't exactly want the Tarrasch. He waits white for 3.Nc3 to go for a Nimzo-Indian Defense. White avoided the Nimzo-Indian and played 3.Nf3, inviting a Queen's Indian Defense. And then, Magnus go for 3. ... d5. In blitz games GMs choose unbalanced or sharp positions to catch the opponent out of preparation and use the time pressure in their favor. In classical games these openings is more easily neutralized, so they use more "solid" or classical openings.
carlsen was toasted, @6:32 b4 was totally winning and @8:25 Rxf7 was clearly winning because the ending is an easy win, just go with your king to a3 and then play c4 to destroy the 2 connected pawns, and that's it
I didn't got it how Magnus won there...if carlsen takes rook then he would lose queen to rook and would've promoted the pawn to queen...then also the match could been taken towards draw...y the opponent resigned so quickly...can anyone pls explain???
If Rook takes pawn at a2, queen can take rook at g7. Even if white decides not to take the pawn, carlsen can promote to queen and magnus will have 2 Queens, and if white decides to take the promoted queen, the other queen can take rook at g7, and magnus will still have his queen while white loses one rook. Magnus can easily win from there considering he's ahead by a pawn.
06:51 g3, what a terrible move. He had obviously overlooked Black's main threat. But what puzzles me even more is how quickly both players (who are both known to know a lot of openings theory) were out of book, particularly Wojtaszek who played a sideline (Bg5) and started thinking 2 moves later.
That wasn't a draw, white conceded because Magnus was going to take his Rook and was up too much material. You can always tell who wins by seeing where the Kings are placed after the game is over. If they are both on black squares, black won. White squares, white won. Mixed squares, draw.
