    I bought a 13b REW on e-bay 5 or so years ago, installed it in my car and it was only running on one rotor. Tore it down and the front rotor and housing were trashed from a broken apex seal. Never buying a motor on e-bay again. Only upside is I could use the good rotor and housing to repair my engine which also had a bad rotor and housing.

    it is interesting how people think of eBay as a company that produces stuff.

    • @deeremeyer1749
      @deeremeyer1749 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uh, ebay produces a website and online auctions and many services for its customers who pay part of their purchase price or proceeds for the service. They "seller" pays it but if no one buys their stuff, they don't really have the money to pay ebay ebay is also the "arbitrator" between buyer and seller and "personal communication" out side of ebay about ebay transactions is supposed to be a no-no. So basically ebay acts as an agent between buyer an seller and if a buyer an seller can't work out any problems between themselves ON ebays site through their communication channels, ebay is probably going to be "paying" for the results of unhappy buyers.
      Its interesting how some people who clearly have no idea what "stuff" is and no clue what companies do or what is considered "producing" things or "production" have so many "facts" and "opinions" about "business" that are completely wrong.
      Of course its also interesting how some people are so brainwashed into political correctness and unsure of themselves enough to BE brainwashed to that degree and are socially retarded enough thanks to their insecurities that they're not able to make an actual critical comment about even anonymous strangers online.
      Let me show you how its done. If you don't think ebay "produces stuff", you're a fool. If you think I "don't get" that "you meant ebay doesn't make engines" which is the response I'd expect to get from someone "called out" for their own incorrect "observations" online, I "can't get" what you didn't say. If you mean ebay doesn't make engines and isn't responsible for an engine being bad or good and people who say "ebay this" when they're talking about something just SOLD on ebay and they should specify the SELLER or not make the video so viewers don't get CONFUSED, then SAY IT.
      Its a COMMENT SECTION. FOR THE VIDEO. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT THEN SPEAK UP AND TELL THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE VIDEO. Don't be a little BITCH trying to be an undercover badass and "observe" something and make the implication its wrong and that the VIDEO PRODUCER is wrong while trying to keep "deniabilit.
      What's INTERESTING is that there are so many people out there who have opinions and get on the internet to give them and then say NOTHING that might get them "in trouble".

    that's so wrong of you guys; you can't call it ebay teardown. ebay don't sell these engines. people sell them through ebay. the quality of the products that you buy depend on the the people that are selling them on ebay. that's stereotype; you basically putting every seller on the same bag. that's misleading and it's a disgrace.

      Agree 100%!! It depends on if your buying it from an actual business that imports these motors or if your just buying it off some bloke that buy's wrecked cars for dirt cheap and parts them out. To group them all together like that is just wrong. The place i buy my honda motors from has a website where you can order from or you can call them, but also have an eBay page cause its a great platform to sell on. just because they sell on ebay doesn't make them less quality, one time i called them and drove out an hour to pick up my motor. They offer great service and even give you a warranty. Of course there are some bad sellers out there but there no such thing as an "Ebay motor" or an ebay anything, It's just people going on ebay trying to spend as less as possible and getting either ripped off or a shitty product.

    I did a s4TII>s5TII swap. Got a JDM S5TII engine off ebay. 2200$ to door. Had a Haltech wired in.It kept starting but shutting off after a few min. Started it one time and the front half of the motor seized before ever driving the car. Pulled the motor and broke it down and everything looked really good.. 3rd gen rotors too. Took it to a rotary shop and the guy said it was recently rebuilt and the apex seals were almost brand new, but a bearing wasn't centered correctly when being tightened down in the rebuild and went out fast. Got it rebuilt and streetport by him so all good now. If I were to do another build, I'd just buy a rebuilt core from a rotary shop for like 1200$ and then find manifolds turbo ect. Would cost about as much as I paid before I had to do a rebuild.. and it'd be a fresh rebuild.. I'd say rotary is a hit and miss on ebay but a lot of people seem happy with their piston motors from there.

    Regardless of whatever variables there can be with regard to risks and conditions of engines and sourcing and even how much is paid, seems that common sense and luck are valuable factors but one thing for sure, though well intended, the video is seriously lacking in focus and the cameraman should be silent and concentrate on subject matter more which is something that can be controlled and fine tuned! Let's hope the next vid is better! Thank you mechanic and keep rotoring!!

  • @deeremeyer1749

    That nice clean oil standing inside that old, worn-out and carboned-up junkyard engine look like evidence somebody did the old "wet" compression test with a nice coating of fresh oil in the engine to seal it up and make a tired engine seem a lot healthier than it is. Either that or its remnants of somebody doing a wet test after the dry test showed it was a boat anchor better replaced than rebuilt or scrapped with the car it was installed in when the "simple" rotary engine was going to cost more to rebuild or replace than the car was worth. If $1500 for a partial core that's going to need new housings and a complete rebuild is a good deal I'd hate to see a bad one.

      If the engine is good? maybe, the RX8 has the renesis engine which is not what most people are looking for, they want the 13B from the s6/s7 RX7(own experience, dont take it as absolute truth)

      @@bear420allday3 Thank you Bear, i have researched different forums & sites on rotary maintenance. Yes agree with different methods according to driving style, conditions, rpms levels, seals, spark plug types, catalytic converters, etc. My guess is that high Rpm race track drivers probably need more oil to help preserve seals and chamber compressions. Too much premix oils may clog catalytic converter. There are some "ashless" oils that burn off better. In any case, maybe better to clog a $200 catalytic converter than $2000 rotor rebuild. Continued blessings 👍⭐🙏🚗🚘

      @@sandervanderkammen9230 Thank you Sander & Bear for interesting viewpoints. Im not a mechanic but viewed over 101 videos, forums etc. and im still undecided ☺ i know some owners who never ever premixed before. Maybe i need to test drive other Rx8s. Some TH-cam videos show rotor wear but still unsure what to conclude since oils may have been injected by factory OMP and/or premix. Plus video is unclear how car was driven. Apparently older series 1 (04-08) may or may not have had adequate oils to lube rotors. But agree that premix oil may only help if metal clip seals have been damaged, or maybe continuosly reved at high Rpms. In any case, thank you for interesting premix opinion ☺⭐👍🚗🚘

    If you buy a boat anchor engine on eBay and the description doesn't match the condition the buyer protection on eBay has been very good to me in my experience.
    Your lucky you can even find these engines. Its a used engine and your either going to refresh/rebuild it or toss it in and continue through its service life where it left off when pulled from the donor car. These engines will one day be like flatheads... rare and even more expensive than they are now...
    I wouldn't say rotaries are unreliable, but I would say they are pricey pieces of kit to run. They are a unique design and part and parcel with that is its own specialty knowledge required to keep them going.
    9:00 no one says german cars are reliable... they are money pits.

      "the buyer protection on eBay has been very good to me in my experience."......... the buyer protection is really good on ebay. however as a ebay store owner it isn't necessary. all you have to do is slightly complain and i'll send out a replacement in minutes.

    • @robertreid4138
      @robertreid4138 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree that contacting the seller is the first and best way to sort out a problem, but I also believe that some sellers are motivated to seek resolution because eBay protects buyers IMO more than sellers.

    • @powerhousedecals1993
      @powerhousedecals1993 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will add this though. there are scammers in every outlet. I know scammers on amazon and ebay and etsy and in real life. IF the seller doesn't offer IMMEDIATE resolution then report them immediately. then leave them negative feedback. my stores of course have very high customer service ratings. I make custom decals as well. and very often I have to replace the decals because a customer measured incorrectly. and I replace them happily not a prob for me

  • @kristofkocsis9716
    @kristofkocsis9716 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I came up with a theory.
    To my knowledge, apex seals are pushed against the housing by the springs. What if you could somehow lock the seals in place, so they don't scrape the surface of the housing?
    You wouldn't lose compression in such a "short" term.
    Again, I'm no expert, just an ambitious enthusiast

    • @zj279789
      @zj279789 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kristóf Kocsis they're seals. if they don't scrape the housing, there is no compression. They are made to create a seal, that's why the springs push them against the housing

    • @zj279789
      @zj279789 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No seal=No compression

    • @sandervanderkammen9230
      @sandervanderkammen9230 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The seals must be able to move in order to compensate for the thermal expansion of the engine and the bearing clearance and flex of the eccentric-crankshaft. If the seal does not maintain the correct pressure against the housing it will leak and will overheat, burn or crack from the leaking combustion gases.

      those RA super seals are just wearing down your housing just FYI, if you're going with SE housings just go with OEM cast iron seals, they'll hold up much better as that's what the SE housing are made for and for your front iron maybe resufacing and re-nitrating it would be a good idea if you're concerned about it

I was using 10w30 synionic Rotary Formula oil before , a highly regarded oil.........like i said x 2 rear rotor bearing destroyed...My digi dash has 2 oil pressure alarm setpoints and i set at 40psi and 16 psi...both on track have never come on...the 40 psi is on when idling.

    Why mention ebay? Its just a second hand engine in the same condition as it would be if you bought anywhere else

    When you buy a rotary engine you're suppose to rebuilt it anyway don't ever plan on buying a motor and putting it right in your car!

    I baught a 13b turbo11 from tiger imports in Canada and let me just say never ever again the engine was junk the transmission was full of water 50000 miles yea right more like 950000 miles and went through he'll getting half my money back with a rotary engine if you can't look it over in person don't do it that's my personal opinion

    When I saw your title, I thought there were Chinese sellers of new rotary engines on Ebay and I was intrigued, but then you broke out a used engine. How can you evaluate whether "eBay Rotary Engines are Bad" by evaluating a used engine? You might have a good one, you might not, but it says nothing about all rotary engines on eBay.

    there is a german company, you can reach via "wankelmotorguru.de" which offers totally rebuild engines for around 3500-4500€. they provide informations on how to check wether your engine is worn and what might be wrong with it, which keeps people from unnecessarily buying unneeded spareparts.

    I love to hear people who think they buy and 'Ebay' brand...Anything. Ebay is a marketplace, on the internet, welcome to reality kids... I'm not particularly fond of what Ebay has turned into lately but that's entirely besides the point...its a marketplace, with honest people and dishonest people and everywhere in between. Is this for learning disabled people to help them understand the principle behind and online marketplace or is this a video by someone thinking that Ebay produces products and sells them? I guess I'm confused.

    Not sure this is so useful....??? If these engines were all coming from a few known rebuilders then comparisons could be made. Buying anything used is a huge gamble just the same as buying from a local wrecking yard...

    Live on a Friday afternoon? Why is that relevant? You sure you didn't just put that in there so whoever owns the shop you're in after hours doesn't get pissed if they see their shop being used for commercial purposes online or something? Or are you just trying to trick casual viewers who aren't rotary guys into thinking rotary fanboys actually work on Friday afternoons?
