Had an amazing encounter with a very cute and friendly Harbor Seal. I have nicknamed him “Bitey” since it appears that Bitey may have some shark bite scars. Thanks to my wife Susie for capturing most of the best footage.
On land, harbor seals are really skittish and tend to run away. But in the water they're very social and curious! They like to investigate and play with people and cameras! It's an adorable bit of duality
I think the scratching movement means "come with me." At least it is with ring seals. It probably thought you were too skinny, and was going to show you where to find food.
I've heard harbor seals are curious about humans and watch us from the sea. On land they are shy and swim away. I'm not assuming that they're all gonna be this friendly while someone's scuba diving or snorkeling. But from my experience with wild animals and shy domesticated animals, is that you always let them COME TO YOU. And never FORCE yourself on them. In this video I think the diver approximately gave the seal his space, yet he was still curious and friendly! Well done!
I'm so jealous!! I'm out there daily nearly 9 months out of the year for more than 2 decades and have just been waiting for a seal to come play! They're so adorable!
Yes, it did hurt a little, but not too bad. I had some superficial scratch marks that went away by the end of the day. Not quite sure what the scratching was about.
This reminds me of the harbor seals that are kinda semi-permanent residents of my town's marina. A few years ago I would play with them a bunch. One that I named Curiosity even came up to try and touch my hand, but I moved it out of the way just in case. I had also tried feeding them some sardine meat, but they didn't have much interest in it, probably meaning that they prefer live food. The bottom scavengers got a good meal though! 😂
The scratching and grasping of the leg is a clear sign that a pat and scratch is required, dogs are identical in their ability to let you know when they are in need of the said same thing. I’m amazed that no hand was extended in return, I personally would not have been able to stop myself 💙🩵💙 Susan and Michael Australia 🦘☮️

Uh....maybe it was a type of mating ritual. ..maybe a young male just learning to tempt a ....skinny pale seal... that he is here for her...and does not understand that it is a male human......?

We call it a seal, but clearly its an underwater dog!
The German word for harbour seal is Seehund, literally "sea dog" ^^
In Russian fur seals named "Морской котик", literally sea kitty(not even cat lol).
