Wild Walrus Takes A Summer Vacation Across Europe | The Dodo Comeback Kids

- Wally the wild walrus surprised everyone when he showed up in Ireland in the summer of 2021. Walruses don't typically travel that far South and because he didn't have access to ice, he settled for the next best thing - boats! His trip around Europe didn't end there and he eventually made his way to Spain! But things really took an even more surprising turn when a second walrus, Freya was also spotted in Europe at the same time.

I’m so sad for Freya. She spent a lot of time in the town I’m from in the Netherlands and everybody was instructed to keep their distance and just let her be. She sort of became the mascotte of the shipyard/harbour here because she loved to hang out there and just chill.
truly sad, I can't believe that :(
Humans are trash
R.I.P, Freya.😭💐💔
saddened to hear they put her down. rip freya
Rest on peace Freya. It is terrible that they killed her😔 Thank you for what you did for Wally, to set the good example 🙏🙏🙏
Homo sapiens is an invasive species.
shame on us for what happened to Freya. animals like them are usually too big to believe we could do them harm and are most vurnable to the concept of a gun, they trusted us too much
I thought you made a typo using the phrase Rest On Peace and then I remembered we are talking about giant animals that are obsessed with resting on everything. Makes total sense! ROP Freya
Biologically speaking, Freya was too far away from others to mate and held no more use for her species. She consumed resources with no benefit to her species or any other species. Killing her did not endanger anything and protected the environment and human stuff.
@@CaptainJackSparrow110 You`re wrong. She ate the invading oysters. She was actually a good thing for the ecosystem in the Oslofjord. She wouldf have moved on sooner or later, heading back north. She wasn`t even old enough to mate. It`s a shame.
I remember Wally. He tried to get in every boat no matter how big or small. Poor Wally. You can tell he’s young. His tusks aren’t very long. Rest well Freya…
That makes sense why he wasn’t afraid, I think the younger wild animals haven’t learned whereas older animals are more likely to learn to keep their distance.
Poor Freya I’m so sad… what gave them the right?
@@mikshinee87 idiots who put themselves in harms way deserve harm. If you don’t understand that, go back to elementary school and finish growing up.
@@mikshinee87 Is that why we kill tens of thousands of humans every year through war, murder, suicide, and manslaughter etc? This was an innocent animal who caused no harm to anyone, unlike humans who destroy everything we touch. If a human puts themselves in a dangerous situation with an animal and is injured, how is that the animals fault? This is the problem with society today we protect the stupid. In days gone by, they would have been weeded out through natural selection (making dumb desicions). However now we protect them and then they breed and bring down the IQ of the population.

Very good question !
The Norwegian people, if you and Walruses don't like that, then stay out of Norway.
Thank you for not killing Wally like Norway did with Freya. RIP FREYA I'm sorry that humans let you down.
Freya is an unforgivable tragedy. No excuse for what happened to her.
Norway is not nice to environment. They are rich enough to protect a rare mammal.
People just can't let others be harmed even if its their own fault. Our harm avoidant society is sick
I was in Oslo just days before she was killed, trying to get to see my first walrus ever. Such a sad story.
@@entropino9928and what harm was even going to happen? She was habituated to humans. Someone throwing her a fish or petting her wasn’t going to lead to an attack most of the time and if it did that would be on the person who approached.

I remember hearing about what happened to Freya in the news. It's so incredibly sad, heartbreaking, and completely unnecessary. The ocean is their home, not ours. When I heard how horrible people were treating Freya, it disgusted me. They could have tranquilized her and moved her to safety. I think they were just being cheap and lazy. It's 100% humans fault she was killed. I'm glad Wally survived.
First off, tranqualizing heavy animals is dangerous to them, secondly; you could have offered to pay for moving her yourself, but nooo, other people have to pay for your vanity projects.
@@potetnamnbaknamn895 it’s not safe for the animal to be tranquillised because it could kill it, so then they killed it instead. See how dumb this is?
@SLAM YOUR HEAD IN No, because shooting it in the head was painless. Meanwhile tranqing whould have run the risk of the animal, more likely than nor: Having her internal organs crushed by her own weight, heart failure, lungs getting squeased into chooking her to death, or if she got spooked by the dart; diving into the sea and drowing when the tranq started working.
I favor humans over animals. Our evolved minds can create morality that lets us work communally to survive and thrive as a species.
We don't spend all our resources to save one person to live another month. We make moral judgments about cost versus benefit of a person's life. We typically see those issues at end of life stages.
Most people don't factor in that it is only because we have become so technologically and socially successful that we can even make moral decisions about how much time, talent and treasure to spend on people with little to offer or little time left. These decisions have only been an option for less than a hundred years.
Most of human existence we lived short hard lives. Catch a flu and you're dead in a couple days. Cut yourself farming and your're dead in a week. We are mammals and like all live birth animals about one in four women died during childbirth or become so disabled that they died in less than a year.
It has been only in the past several decades that the technical option and wealth existed to even possibly do something like relocate Ashley Graham (her real name).
The next question is whether it is right to confiscate taxpayer money to pay to give her a new home. I don't think so.
There are plenty of charities concerning animals and if any of them had come forward with the cash to relocate her; they were free to do so. Why is no one blaming Peta or some rescue organizations?
@@CaptainJackSparrow110 PETA really? You mean the organization that routinely euthanizes and kills animals? Yeah, they would be a great choice.
"Wild animals are always best observed at a distance" - Sir David Attenborough
All domesticated animals were considered "wild" at one time.
@@babalonkie basically we bred the wild out of them
@@darkelysium2187 Correct, but humans bred it via more than just conditioning... via genetics too. It was and is a sick and disturbing practice.
Wild animals only belong in one place and one place only... in the wild.
Yes, the African people do that quite well. It's the Europeans who seem unable to do it.
@@babalonkie Well too late for that. some of the plants and animals we cultivated have gotten to the point where they can't survive in the wild without us. We became their caretakers despite our lack of care for them. It's best we give them the best life we can give.
"She did not realize how dangerous we are" I love this linr
Poor Freya. She should have been tranquilized and moved back to Iceland. If the can do it to bears they can do it for marine wildlife. Sad that they thought that was the best alternative for her 😪
It's incredibly risky to tranquilize a large marine animal, there's a risk that it could drown should it dive in the water.
Doing that to a massive marine mammal is extremely dangerous for those involved and for the animal, not to mention the absurd price of moving around large marine mammals. Not too many wildlife rescue organizations could foot the bill, I've worked at them before and we have to be pretty careful of spending the donation money.
But it would be a lot easier to crowd fund a project for a well known individual animal that has made the news. They could have at least tried. Granted it’s obviously more risky with marine life but a chance for success is still better than euthanasia.
Did you watch all of the footage of these people who closely approached her? I mean like one or two feet away from her? She was comfortable, gentle and enjoyed their company. With a walrus expert from a nearby zoo, it would have been easy to safely catch her and take her anywhere without even tranquilizing her.
@@seanhiggins2740 Yes, and have you heard of the grizzly man? Loved nature, showed the world how gentle bears were. Until he got killed by a bear he had known and interacted with for years. Wild animals are predictable to an extent, but completely safe? especially animals of that size and strength? Never. Don't take the chances, or else you will regret it. I have no doubt that 9 times out of 10, the animal could be transported safely, but not guaranteed safety is just not enough. Massive wild animals are just not predictable enough, and have the power to cause serious harm.
They deserve respect, they were put here just like us and we need to adapt to their presence as global warming brings us in closer contact with animals seeking refuge.
More than likely, these walruses hot their directiond screwed up and ended up far from home. It is unlikely that this "climate change" hoax had anything to do with it.
Absolutely. I see ignorant comments on here about how there wasn't a mate for her, and she was eating and messing up the environment and such. They should have found an alternative solution instead of just taking her life. She deserved better. Humans are the main reason for killing environments, yet we make the call to end innocent animals lives for just living their natural lives as best they can.
@Michael Doolan See that's the problem, denial
@Michael Doolan What kind of dumbass comment is that? What the 🤬 do you think has been the cause then, Mr. Scientist, if the problem is due to the planet getting hotter?!
@@karencrane5963 There is no data that supports the conjecture that human CO2 emissions cause "global warming." That is not "denial." It is simply the fact. Further, what warming has occurred over the past 150 years or so is well within the bounds of natural variation.

As an Norwegian, Im so sorry for what we did to Freya.
They tried first to take her to a secret location but the idiots found her again and told the rest of the idiots. People was so stupid that they even swimmed close to her and got SURPRISED that she didnt like that. So she become "dangerous" to the public.
My husband is Norwegian, and he and his friends agree it's horrific they killed Freya for no reason. She absolutely should've been rehomed to a safe habitat.
It's an animal, get over it. We kill millions of cows every year. Also, no one was going to get hurt. These government types just love throwing their weight around. They did the same thing up in Puget sound and killed an orca up there. Government people are all morons.
They should have just tranquilized Freya, put her in a ship or cargo plane, and then transport her to Iceland or whatever nearby native habitat that was suitable. How do you think they get animals for zoos, so why can't they facilitate the same trip the other way around??
Which is why they need to be held accountable and dealt with as a statement towards others that are prone to taking the same path.
@@eltoro969 A public speaking should have been set. If the rich assholes where the reason for her death, they should have payed for every expen... I stop myself. Rich people will never be accountable.

Or friggin controlling the people actively getting close to her
I think we should euthanise the evil Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries as clearly they pose a danger to wild life 😡
What do you expect? They are from Norway.
That's government bureaucrats. "we killed the walrus for its own good" - basically the Norwegian bureaucrats.
Its heartbreaking because in my heart I believe that these two were a lost couple looking for each other.
Disgusting that someone decided to kill Freya instead of finding an alternative sensible solution.
Right. They could have sedated and transported her. This was needless.
@@justin.channelsyou're absolutely right. Let's kill the animal bc people are to stupid to stay away from them. They had a few different options. 1. Take her to her kind and then monitor her to make sure she does well with her own kind. 2. They could have put her in a zoo, not my favorite option, or sanctuary. 3. Could have made sure stupid ppl would stay away and leave her alone.
This is why we have extinct animals. We kill them when they get to close. Maybe they should be allowed to kill us when we get to close. We are encroaching on there habitats not the other way around. We've been doing it as long as humans have been around. It's disgusting to here that any animal in today's world is being killed. There are exceptions to this of course, like end of life or to hurt to be fixed. If it can't live in the wild but could live some where else then put them in the foster or adoptive home or in a zoo or sanctuary where they can be cared for. Just bc an animal can't live in the wild doesn't mean they should be killed. We need to do better for our animals, all of them wild or not.
Eeyup.
Can't say enough about the fact they needed to kill her. This was tragedy.

I was enjoying the first half of the video and was thinking I needed to keep this on my playlist. Then turns out the ending is so sad and brutal and selfish. I have forever changed my impression of Norway.
Same as the story about Luna. Heartbreaking!
Norway has a brutal history of whaling and killing marine animals and birds on a massive scale, they opposed the ban on whaling for years.....
One thing we did has changed your entire view on a whole country. Good job
Oh I'm from Philippines, it did change my entire view of Norway when it comes to dealing with animals in need. They chose the shortest route which is to kill instead of saving a marine life. Norway is a rich country, I'm sure they have plenty of resources if they really want to help. 💔
I love that Wally the walrus picked Ireland to rest up in 2021. Wally is a great success and is where he should be in. Iceland! So sad for Freya that she had to put down because of people.... 😞
I mean, she didn't *have* to be😞
People and their lack of boundaries, thank goodness Wally had y'all champion for him. I had a funny thought but lost it due to hearing the terrible news of Freya. RIP sweet Freya.
Wow Wally what a big cute handsome boy! So unfortunate for Freya though.Thats so sad
Omg I can't believe that they murdered Freya. That is simply unacceptable.
Guesss how many Whales they murder yearly!
Ireland and other countries would’ve financially helped to save her- I’m sure of it.
Thanks for using the correct word. Yes, it's murder, not "euthanasia". Euthanasia is compassionately relieving another's suffering. The only suffering they were relieving were their own. Selfish, conscienceless, heartless humans strike again. WE are the most dangerous species on the planet -- by far. She did absolutely nothing to deserve her death sentence. She hadn't been aggressive or threatening. She was looking for HELP and companionship, and instead paid the ultimate price for trusting our species. Shame on her executioners.
You see this kind of attitude and lazyness all the time, killing is easy so they do it. I remember articles on for example this what 1 in few million white stag that wondered in a city in the UK and instead of trying herd it away or tranquillise they just shot it. Australia was shooting puppies to prevent people from adopting them at the shelter in the excuse people might come into contact with each when visiting and catch covid. There was a dog living wild in a park, very friendly and people looked after it, rspca just captured and straight up killed it and didn't tell anyone until after where many said they would adopt. Over and over over gain this happens.
Yep, all cause humans are dumbasses by getting so close to her.
Heartbreaking, thank you to those magnificent people who helped Wally. You are an example for a better and kinder world.

Poor Freya 💗 So relieved Wally never went to Norway 🙄. He is home safe with his buddies. People in the UK understood the concept of keeping distance from a wild animal.
i am furious about this! i really dont understand this "reasoning": oh yeah some people are too stupid to keep their distance, the idiots could get hurt and learn a lesson or get darwined out of here, so let us kill an innocent animal just bc. if i fall in a wild river bc i am stupid, will we dry out all rivers to make sure that can never happen? to hell with that 😞

She hasn't even attacked or shown any sort of aggression, its just needlessly cruel like even Harambe had a single flimsy reason that the public was already stressing him out and they had to choose the kid or him and that sedation would have been dangerous.
In both cases they should have had someone friggin herd the humans away.

I mean, people were swimming with her for goodness sake!
Experts also warned people that she was showing signes of overstress, probably due to her innability to find somewhere calm and away from the crowd to be able to rest correctly. And for the tranquilizer idea. When shot, a 600kg animal will take time to start "sleeping", that is if you manage to get past the blubber at the first shot. You can't, without a lot of heavy equipments and staffs, contained a wild walrus on a boat therefor she would have most probably be scared by the dart, jumped into the arbour, passed out and drowned! A slow, silent and horrifiyng death.

It's not just that season, either, it's that I know mingling with the locals would mean sometimes chatting with people who view it as a positive thing. Even if I did my level best to avoid the topic, which I definitely would, I'd know. And even though I know my perspective as a foreigner who has no lived experience of the islanders' history or traditions and so in many ways, should be cautious in making judgements, it's hard to unsee the photos and videos.
On the other hand, I've also thought that maybe I could go during a low-hunt time of year and while there, visit some of the bays and have a quiet spiritual moment, sort of telling the whales (and dolphins) that I'm sorry they died that way, which was likely painful and prolonged. I'd also throw in that if we do try hard to find a silver lining, it's that their deaths were not as senseless as many other animals' (and people's) are, and that in their case, their bodies are used to the maximum extent to feed many meals to many of the island's inhabitants, hopefully some of which will grow up and be very concerned about the mercury content in the whales and dolphins and rethink their diets and gradually develop other food avenues.

A few of them lose their way or are simply more curious than the herd and wander off in new, unexplored, and possibly deadly directions. We should do a much better job of relocating them back to their proper environment much more promptly, and as a matter of course.
Why is it that humans seem to sacrifice the animals first, instead of educating the public? Or hell, policing the public? We, the humans, are the ones infringing on their habitats, and yet we kill them rather than leave them alone. I just don't get it. I don't think I ever will. Sedation and moving her, which would have been my absolute last resort, would have been a better option.
No, you make too much sense. 🙃🤪🥰
Agreed. Or manage the people. Humans need “managing” far more than animal wildlife ever does.
@@quaver1239 Humans need culling. Plain and simple. We've protected the stupid, selfish and ignorant for generations rather than letting Darwinism do its job and now the world is as you see it today. Those people all needed to be arrested, fined or punished in some way, forced to keep their distance. If it was up to me I would have just opened fire on the lot of them then and there and done the gene pool a huge favor. I despise humanity.
I whole heartily agree. Terrible they thought that was the best action to take. Instead of just moving her back home.
Walruses are not native to Norway, nor is the inner Oslofjord and Oslo city it’s habitat🤣🤣🤣 As a Norwegian who lives in Oslo, I can tell you that you’re right in that they should have sedated her and moved her, but your other claims are not true. Also she just kept coming back. At one point she was on her way out, but apparently as a baby, she was not an adult yet, she liked destroying our boats to use them as madrases, eat sea birds, and chase after people in the water. Yes, it’s the public’s fault as they couldn’t leave here alone. Yet when you’ve never seen a walrus before, would you?! Also move her where? The arctic is a bit far away for them to move here all the way there… easy to judge. And the huge irony and paradox how people are all upset about one walrus being put down, yet how many of them eat meat everyday? Is a walrus more worth than any calf, lamb, chicken etc?!
0:18 I bet that sorta climbing and some foggy conditions is what sparked mermaid rumours back in the day
I’m furious with Norway for killing Freya.
Me too! I some times like north korea 🇰🇵 but when they kill an animal like a walrus 🦭 it makes me mad 😡 it makes want to fight them those jerks killed my favorite animal something has to be done
if this happend to you something you worked for 10 years to get then it was just destroyed by a walrus then ofc youd put it down its just sad cuz its a walrus and not any other creatures man i think youve killed so many insects in your life if you really care about one walrus care about the rest of the creatures of the world the walrus was 1 motnh in oslo
"Furious" isn't a strong enough word.

What you said makes literally no sense. Your point also seems to indicate that removing her and relocating her wasn't an option, which it damn well was.
Yet another person taking it personally. I assume you're from Norway. I don't typically make such assumptions, but just like another person spamming excuses all around with the same last name, it's the only thing that makes sense.
Nobody is blaming Norway for having to find a solution to protect people and property. Everyone is blaming Norwegian wildlife officials for the solution they chose, out of several options. That's the difference here.
In addition, about the caring for every single insect jibberish you were saying. Humans don't HAVE to care about only one thing at a time. For all we know, if the commenter sees an insect in their house they relocate it outside. Many people do. I do that. It's not thay uncommon. Making the assumption that they jump to kill everything they see is just stupid and is excusing poor behavior from other entities that DO take to this method automatically, such as this case with Freya.
The fact that two other countries did the right thing previously and set a precedent for proper control in such a situation simply makes Norway's handling of the situation that much more deplorable.
@@ElysetheEevee My mom relocates spiders. With her bare hands. I can only do jumping spiders. I also relocate beetles. But, I draw the line at mosquitoes and bees. Love your response BTW.
RIP Freya
So sad...
Like a normal lad from the UK he went on holiday in Spain, nothing abnormal here. 😆
It is disgusting what they did to Freya. Instead of a solution they resorted to just getting rid of the problem. Really shows the problem is not animals but humans who resort to quick solutions without thinking of the right solution! So angry 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Well there are a lot more humans than walrus. They are an indicator species that reflect the state of the environment that our world depends on. I think killing the creature is like smashing a mirror because we are not understanding enough to see the ugly truth! 🐳😥
Yep I am angry too.
Hopefully the barbaric idiots who killed Freya, a gentle harmless soul, rather than find a way to protect her and get her home will suffer horrific physical and mental pain every day for the rest of their miserable lives and then rot in the deepest bowels of Hell!
@@angelacalais6449 Agreed. Highly.
We are wildlifes worst enemy. We need many more people like these two folks.
Precious, Adorable, Darling walrus ❤️🧡💛
I started off watching this thinking how fascinating and cute. I was so happy to hear that Wally made it back home, which is why it was cute. He just had a little vay-cay. Then they said that Freya was euthanized and my entire mood changed. I'm so angry. Her death was unnecessary. If people would just leave wild animals alone. Idiots.
Wally was on the beach near where I live in the south of England just a few weeks ago. He's safe, well and still enjoys a good vacation in seems.
There was a third walrus spotted in Europe, she travelled many places, ended up in the coast of Finland but died due to starvation. I'm really sad to hear about Freya :(
At least they let her be.
My heart hurts for Freya.
Wally's pontoon AKA floating bed. What a cutie pie. He's such a good dude.
We had a walrus here in Finland over the summer too who had earlier been spotted on the shores of Estonia. She was rescued from someone’s backyard and, sadly, died on the way to the zoological hospital. Her remains are now in the Natural History Museum in Helsinki.
That walrus was also seen in Poland.
@@jannawrocki4427 Oh I didn’t know that. It’s sad how she passed away :(
He is the Elon Musk of his species. He is exploring the unexplored. Let's go to Mars and chill with these humans. They seem nice.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR SAVING WALLY AND TRYING TO SAVE FRIYA.
Wow. He’s huge!!! And so so beautiful 😍
We are responsible for taking care of this planet, yet this is how we act continuously as a species, RIP Freya. Humans should never try colonizing other planets until we can shed our evil.
do the planet a favor and quit eating if you want to save it. Me on the other hand ill continue living and eating.
RIP Freya
Walruses should be respected
Stunning creature. The size just leaves you with a sense of awe!
I’m so sad to hear about Freya 😢 wished people did more to try and have her move more in the direction of her natural habitat
i cant believe they killed Freya! 😰
As a Waleus Lover I. LOVE THIS RIP Freda you were loved
I am glad Wally found his way home. I read that they used euthanasia on Freya. I have even signed petitions to never allow any government to step in and use euthanasia again when there are/were so many other options. Live a long, happy and safe life Wally the Walrus. As well as all your species. It is your planet as well as ours.
Freya was put down just a few days ago. Humans suck.
Correction, EVIL humans suck.
Does anybody know why they couldn’t just relocate her like they do every other wild animal that comes into human areas? why did they have to put her down?
@@elisamichele1231...That's what I was wondering, also. Why not just relocate her to Iceland, or somewhere similar that has a large walrus population? Disgusting humans, euthanizing her for no legitimate reason. That breaks my heart. 😢
The most disgusting part is that they debated what to do for about 3 days then decided that euthanasing her was "the best solution ".
3 days...
They took that decision before trying anything else...
I'm glad they didn't try to relocate him but instead accomodated him on his trip as best they could.
Wally's the Bilbo Baggins of the walruses. What an adventure he had!!! 👏👏👏
Why in the absolute world did they euthanize Freya instead of sending her to a sanctuary or trying to take her back home?? I’m sure there were many factors involved but I will still respond OH COME ON! 💜
Because every major Norwegian news companies broadcastet Freya's every move, meaning people could easily find her. That meant that people would gather around her, putting themselves and her in danger
I know. It broke my heart.
@@Girjon05 then stop doing that!
So true...
@@Girjon05 Putting her in danger of being euthanized, that's all. She never hurt a human.
I bet that Wally is simply a very intelligent walrus and therefore especially curious about the world. I'm glad that he managed to return to the arctic where he belongs, of course.
Wally the Explorer 🌊
High respect to these people who takes care of Wally 💗
Freya was not "euthanized". She wasn't sick, she wasn't suffering. Euthanasia is mercy killing of a person or animal who is in great, incurable pain. Freya was simply killed.
Murdered, unnecessarily. Shameful !
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Freyah will be missed oh my days . My heart . What a majestic being…. 😢
So sorry Freya, we humans can be so flawed. Thank you for making this story more public.
Yes. R.I.P. Freya, she died because our species was too lazy to do something. When people say that humanity's laziness could kill people, they were correct in their own way. Except we aren't killing people. We're killing Mother Nature herself.
@@pineapplecat7908 Islam mandates dogs be killed
Thank you for showing how a different approach to wild animals makes all the difference between death or life. Norwegian authorities didn't get it. Instead of penalising and keeping away irresponsible onlookers they imposed the death penalty on Freya, the innocent walrus. I'm furious!
But I'm equally mad at those onlookers who provoked this situation in the first place. Each of them is complicit in murdering Freya.
Well said and very true! with the global narrative about climate change and preservation, how a govt can simply murder an animal for no good reason still baffles me...we ARE so dangerous and poor Freya paid the ultimate price.
my family and myself had met wally in wales, what an awesome creature
So heartbroken that they didn’t try to help Freya more, and if they didn’t know how than bring in the people who helped Wally successfully, don’t just kill a creature who was not causing harm because humans were being dumbasses!
He got to Spain and was like, “darn, this has got to be the wrong way, welp let’s turn around.”
