- This is part one of two. Today I show off the collected editions of Amazing Spider-man in oversized Hardcovers and Omnibus editions. Collecting material from 1961 to 1996. I do a deep look as to what the content of the books and talk about what the reading order. Focusing purely on OHCs and Omnis, so keep that in mind, but I do mention where some trades fit in. This mainly covers everything up to the clone saga and I mention some upcoming omnibuses that have been solicited.

The Roger Stern omnibus is the perfect collection to start on your Spider-Man journey. From there, bounce back and forth between omnibus and paperback collected editions to complete your Spidey library.
I can't wait for them to finally collect the Post-Reilly/Pre-Chapter One stuff. The stories were pretty solid, but the artwork is where it was at: Steve Skroce, Wieringo, Romita Jr., and some early Luke Ross. Not a bad time artistically for the web-head.
I was a fan of the Sensational run and Spectacular at the time. I hope one day all of that will be collected properly.

It's on the hachette catalog that comes out two or three times a year. The preorder for ASM omni will be next month.
Someone really needs to make a full reading order for the entirety of Spider-Man using paperbacks, hardcovers, and omnis. I had to endure weeks of research to put my timeline together and I still update it from time to time. Figuring out which books fit where chronologically is a pain. Yeah, there are reading order guides but they hardly ever update, so there are a lot of gaps that you have to fill in yourself. Not just Spider-Man, there are a lot of characters that need it.
It would be difficult to do considering Marvel went back on their word and the epics sometimes overlap the omnis, but I don't think it would be too difficult to put together, the question would be where do you put things like Marvel Knights Spider-man or the Tangled Web omni.
Masterworks and Epic Collections make this easier. Problem with the Epic Collections are the out of order releases.
I love how he takes time to reply to a lot of the comments it really shows that he cares about the fans.
I want these so bad! It looks great and I love spider-man, he is my favorite character richt after daredevil.

Joaquin Aragon I have never done that, but I know people that do. When I read my books, I take my DJ off. Maybe that’s why :) some of these are over 16 years old.
@@NearMintCondition that's what I've always done with my hardcovers. I always take the jacket off because of how fragile it is compared to the actual hardcover and that helps keep it in great condition.
The spines for these look so more cohesive than the X-Men ones. :)
I know... If only Marvel would stay consistent with those spines.

I am a HEAVY marvel guy and I’m considering getting into dc, I’ve never been a big dc guy, I’ve read the long Halloween and hush but that’s about it aside from a few other dc books, I’ve heard about crisis and all this stuff, do you have any suggestions as to where to start?
Max I was a Marvel guy, other than the Batman story here and there and Supes and the big crossovers. It wasn't until I was in my early 20s that I got huuuuge into DC. We have a show called Old Reader New Reader where I go back and reread a storyline and my two lovely cohosts read the book for the first time. I think you would enjoy that. We do it LIVE every Tuesday at 8pm EST. Now, stories I suggest: All Star Superman, Batman Year One, Green Lantern Rebirth, Geoff John's Flash, JLA by Grant Morrison, Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka, and Kingdom Come. Now, Rebirth has some solid starts i think: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Supersons and Flash. Those are my suggestions.

What would you recommend for someone who is trying to start with Spider-Man? I have an option to get either Amazing Spider-Man Vol.1 or Michelinie's run with Todd.
Go with Michelinie's omni, unless you are a fan of silver age story telling.
As a kid, I used to have a few comics but somehow I lost them (not sure what happened to them), since then I haven't read any comic. A week ago I found your channel especially this video. Because I wanted to know how to start to read Spiderman again. Your collection is awesome, and made me want to get at least one of them. Fortunatelly I found ASM omnibus vol 1 and bought it. It arrived a few days ago. I know some are outprint and hard to find, but hope one day I could have Venom's. At least now I have something to start with.
Spiderman, Venom and Carnage are my favorite Marvel characters.

Just recently announced for a January release. Other than Avengers nothing else...here is hoping for an Uncanny X-men volume 4!
It was announced yesterday. I believe the only other Vol. 4s are Shang Chi, and an upcoming Avengers.

Re-watching this for the 3rd time haha. But while waiting for Amazing Spider-man omnibus volume 1 reprint want to see what else is missing from my collection. Hopefully clone sage vol 2 gets reprinted and Amazing Spider-man vol 4 as well. Even through volume 4 during this time wasnt even thought of so can't wait Omar for when you do an updated Amazing Spider-man reading order.
That "old style;heavy text" makes me shudder.
If Silver Age storytelling isn't for you, I would suggest passing on the first three omnis in the video. The other stuff is from 80s and 90s.

I'm starting to care more about the stories and art rather than collectibility in recent years. I just have a question for you. The omnis of the clone saga are now easier to get and we just got announcement of a Ben Reily volume 2. :) shhh I'll be announcing that on the channel soon. But go that route. Clone saga volumes 1 and 2 and then Ben Reilly volumes 1 and 2.

I have a question: Do you know any books that might collect The Spectacular Spider-man from the early 90s (1990-1994?, or around issues 1-250, just before Clone Saga), That was my era but I didn't read much from it at the time, and I was wondering if Marvel have it in some kind of collected format?
That, my brother is the question I get asked often. Unless you go the masterworks route, there really isn't much collected from that phenomenal series, unless it's a crossover event like Kraven's Last Hunt or Maximum Carnage. This is the Masterworks series here while we wait for an omnibus:

you don't have 2 favorite runs of mine: the Marv Wolfman's around ASM #200 with the introduction of Black Cat, and Tom Defalco/Ron Frenz's after Roger Stern with the black costume and continuing the Hobgoblin enigma
José Sarango sadly those aren’t available in OHC or Omnibus format. Return of the Burglar was released as a standard Hardcover though.
Do you think they will continue to release Amazing Spiderman Omni’s chronologically even after volume 4 to the point where they’ll cover the issues from the Todd Mcfarlane and Erik Larsen runs again? Maybe in something like The Amazing Spiderman Vol.8 or something? Or do you think they’ll skip over those issues and just expect you to get the preexisting omnibus even though they aren’t numbered?
I'm hoping they will, but they will rename the volume numbers. It will take some years though. I bought volume 1 around 10 years ago and they just announced volume 4. That's why they release them all over the place.

I generally don't buy Marvel omnibuses simply because they go out of print fairly easily and I don't have the money to pre-order them every time. (Looking at you Hickman omnis) Which is why I was thinking of collection Spider-man in the epic collections. They seem to be slowly churning those out fairly regularly. Now that I think of it there really isn't many, if at all, Spidey omnis for the modern age...huh.
You are right, this is it. With three more omnis coming next year. I'm a big fan of the epic line too, but if I own it in Omni format I usually pass up on the epic.

Hey Omar, do you think they'll ever do an Alien Costume Omni collection? I know they have collected it in other formats but I haven't seen that it in Omni format and honestly, I'd buy that book (or books).
Is it worth following up amazing Spider-Man (Michelinie & Mcfarlane) with the adjectiveless omni (Michelinie & Larson) OR the Spider-Man vs venom omni? New to the hobby and just wondered if either follow more directly/have better stories
It is. If you are a fan of the art totally go for adjetiveless if you like the story go for Spidey Vs. Venom.

I really like the art in Clone Saga, but I couldn't care less about the story.
Honestly, the first half wasn't that bad, but by the time I got to the second omnibus...I was bored. Glad I can take a break between that and the Ben Reilly Omnibus coming next year.
That's how I feel about Knightfall. I read through those phonebook editions, and really liked the first part, but completely fell off during the second one.
The reasons the Clone Saga dragged on so long are numerous. JM DeMatteis has said that it was originally only going to run for a few issues or so, however, they actually were asked to extend it several times. One reason being because they had a couple of editorial changes during that time.
While it was treated with scorn by Wizard Magazine, the sales were reasonably solid for a bit.
I like episodes out of it, but yeah, it did overstay its welcome.
It totally did, Tommy. The Real Clone Saga is an interesting read. I'm sure it was supposed to be more than six issues, but not quite 100 and something. :)
Do they have other omnibus now, or anything I can buy to have a collection like yours? I have marvel unlimited but I prefer the touch of paper, and I'm not a fan of having to pay for a monthly subscription, would much rather make one large purchase and never have to worry about my spidey addiction hitting a wall again

I'd love these. I've always liked Spiderman, infact he's the only superhero I like, and I'd be thrilled to read all of his stories, wish I had the money to funnel into collecting these

Most of these books are out of print. This is why I like DC more.
There are some books by DC that they let go out of print too like Absolute Promethea, Geoff John's Flash omnis and Morrison's Animal Man just to name a few. But you're right. There is no reason when movies are coming out to let things like those first three omnis go out of print.
@@NearMintCondition I was whining on Twitter about how dear Morrison's Animal Man was and this fella was surprised that it wasn't continually in print. This was one of the books I made a b-line for when 1st getting into comics.
Every book that comes out is technically out of print....they only print so many copies originally and then do reprints..I just bought all of Spider-Man’s omnibus this last month and the most I paid was $150 for a DM variant of roger stern omnibus..got almost every book for $60-75
If you look around you can find the ones out of print for a decent price. I will say to just wait for the next movie though. I'm sure volumes 1 and 2 of Amazing will be reprinted.

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but I never owend comic books but wanted to start getting into collecting some from spider-man. I like the idea of Omnibus editions beacuse they look beautiful and contain lots of stories. I heard kravens last hunt is one of the best stories to read so is this story not in an omnibus version yet?

So is the reason you know you're picking up where you left is because the year of the release date is after the vol 3. The Roger stern was released right after vol 3.?
Believe it or not the Roger Stern omni came out first. Marvel's release of omnis is all over the map. Volume 4 comes out next year right after the Ben Reilly omnibus.

It's honestly all over the place. If I remember correctly they released Amazing volume 1, then a couple of years later the Michelinie/Macfarlane omni then a reprint of volume 1 and then volume 2 then they released the Erik Larsen omni. I don't know the madness behind their releases, but it's not chronological at all.

Yes sir, there are Epic collections available. They aren't oversized art, more so standard tpb size artwork with half the issues of the omnibus, but cheaper. Here is the link to volume one of the Epic:

For me, I only buy stuff I really like. Didn’t like the Clone Saga very much, and Ben Reilly as Spider-Man is, ehhh. I don’t care too much. Definitely not buying those 3, since now they’re OOP.
I’m sure they’ll be back in print. But yes, buy what you like.
For anyone interested at all, if you haven't heard of it yet anyone who sees this comment should go check out a Japanese comic called "Berserk" I try to let any comic fans know just in case they don't know the greatness of this story. You can watch the 1997 anime for it first if you'd like, it's 25 episodes but skip the first episode, if you check it out you'll understand why lol, don't watch the 2016 version, that one is horrible lol but watch the first one to understand the characters in pretty good depth and then you can buy either 40 volumes that are usually around 280ish pages a volume and like 12 dollars or so a volume, or they have deluxe volumes they're coming out now and they're amazing, they're like the size of OHC's but as thick as some omnibus's cause they're all 3 volumes in one, they're all black and feel like leather and you'll really want the deluxe volumes cause all you gotta do is Google "berserk panel art" and you'll see why you want the big versions haha they have a ribbon book mark and a very nice sleek design with the all black and some red on the front, there's about 8 deluxe volumes out now and they're like 40ish dollars a piece and that'll being you up to volume 24 and I think a deluxe volume comes out like every month or so, maybe every couple months. Also starting with volume 1, Kentaro Miura's art is absolutely amazing and gives off the exact kind of vibe he's going for even tho it's black and white. Don't let black and white scare you off either cause I normally don't like black and white but jesus his art is special. And his art only gets better and better with each next volume that comes out. Most beautifully human and inhuman stories I've ever perceived in my life man.
