Little correction: Second Chances and Dark Knight Detective vol 1 should be right before The Cult. The Long Halloween introduces Dick and happens during year three/four, it's a bit weird to put that story *after* Jason's introduction in Second Chances during year nine/ten. Also, Tales of The Demon should be after Dark Victory, as Dick is already Robin in it.

Man... I really want to get into this, but like, while i appreciate these videos and i can see the passion and love for the comics that go into them, literally every reading guide of any long running comic series infuriates me. It's always like "Oh yeah, start with these collection of issue 404-407 from 1987 and then read this one from 1995, and then you need to read this one-off of shoot from 1991, then you can read this almost direct followup to the first run you read, but it takes place after a major event that you haven't read yet, and then you need to see this stage play from 1975, and then you can read issue 402....... I hate it I hate it I hate it
I agree! This is what I feel like has gotten people to no longer read comics. But what I’ve been doing is just jumping right into it man. I try not to stress out about what to read first. I just dive right in to what I see interesting. Later on your brain will start connecting the dots.

When I was first getting into these comics I was stressing out about trying to read it all in order, and how expensive some of these oop trades are, and just trying to read each characters origin. I’m still trying to do that in order but I no longer stress out about skipping chunks of these stories.
I think you should just pick up where you want and go from there. I have started with Year One, currently reading Year Two. Have The Dark Knight Rises, Arkham Asylum, Batman/Supetman, The Man Who Laughs all on the way now for me to get into... May not be the most definite way to start, but its a start! Comics are just for fun at the end of the day

All I wanna say is, Thank you!! You are awesome! Your "Batman Reading Order" is my guide and I'm sticking to it (with occasional diversions like reading Batman Ego or War on Crime) but I'm slowly slowly slooooooowly making my way through all of it and I'm having the bast time while doing so! Currently I am at Robin Reborn and even though I really would like to skip and go straight to No man's land I am sticking with an order. And really works! I get to experience fantastic stories, all the most important events, character change and growth (or sometimes lack of it) it is amazing journey and without you I'm sure I would be completely lost and expirience would not be the same. Got quite a few of the Batman omni's but also lots of different trades that go all over the place and make it more complex where to place them compared to the omni's. Now I can finally start reading it in the correct order.

Jason Todd as Robin era: everything was mentioned in the video. While a lot of Batman's most popular stories/comics are continually printed and talked about today, some of the lesser known but still essential stories are forgotten or passed over. This is my chance to finally see what I've missed and still need to read. It also goes to show how few of these amazing stories are collected in deluxe, oversized format. I don't know what DC is waiting for. Batman is pretty much one of their biggest and most well known IP and they should make sure that these books are accessible to newer readers. Very excited for parts 2, 3, and 4.
The Matt Wagner art is SO GOOD!!! I love my trades and it saddened me that the HC they dropped recently wasn't oversized. Fun fact: they're actually updated versions of classic golden age batman stories.

Omg I used to own the story at the start of the dark Knight detective vol 2 with the Ventriloquist. I have been looking for it for a while and you just opened a book and it appeared. Man I feel like crying as the story fascinated me so much as a kid.
Feel free in the next videos to do the Absolute and Deluxe suggestions for certain story arcs. Crazy that you need 4 videos for the Bat reading order! So Much BATMAN!!!!! Love it!
back in the 90's Knightfall was my introduction to comics. My little sister (she's 20) is collecting all the Jason Todd and Tim Drake stories, she has a thing for Robin's. I was in college when Cataclysm came out and wasn't reading mainstream comics, so I'm really looking forward to those Omnibus!

Excellent, work Omar. I've been on a Batman kick lately(Specifically Nightwing which your video was awesome. I've picked up all of Chuck Dixion's stuff on Nightwing) and I'm definitely going to pick some of this up. I love Loeb and Sale's work with Long Halloween(I have the omnibus). I think for me, I enjoy Batman early years because I always love the idea of seeing how a superhero figures out how they go about defending the city. It is why hot take; I actually like a lot of origin stories, like the MCU films. Formulaic as they can be. My favorite Batman comic is a tossup between Hush and Gotham Central. Yeah, I know Hush gets a lot of naysayers, but I'm a sucker for Jim Lee's art and I like Loeb's writing. Also, I love Gotham Central because Brubaker and Rucka are on it and giving me the Shield with Gotham city is awesome.
Volume 1 goes for no less than a hundred buckaroos rn. Not pulling the trigger on that cause 150$ is to much for the set. Sucks cause moench/jones was the first Batman run I’ve ever read.

:) At least with those pre Crisis era, they've done an amazing job collecting the Golden Age of characters and some Silver age. Bronze age though, needs some love.
While your DC universe starts post-crisis, I’d love to see a video talking about some of the classic Bronze Age stories/runs, especially by Denny O’Neil.
Today I found a copy of Second Chances in perfect shape for cover price. Thanks to your videos I snagged that boy boy up. So excited to add it to my ever growing Collection of Trades and Hardcovers.
I just read two of the stories by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones, about Killer Croc and Scarecrow, in an old German edition of Batman Special from October 1997 which I had found in a second-hand bookshop in my street, and thanks to your vid I found out about the two collected editions and ordered them at once since I love Kelley Jones's horror take on Batman (Batman: Vampire is one of my favourite Batman books), and at least the story about Killer Croc was also very well written. The first volume of the collected editions was out of print but I found an offer at ebay that was acceptable. These two volumes will make a great addition to my collection. Thanks again for all the great information and I am looking forward to Part 2.

Jim Aparo is my default Batman too and I’m a huge Neil Adams fan who grew up on the 70’s. Aparo used to draw Batman’s cape with the big sweeping style.

Neal Adams is all pre crisis. With the exception of Odyssey, but I can’t even remember if that’s even cannon anymore. But feel free to read that after Year One.
Cool list Omar, I would also include Matt Wagner's 2 miniseries "Batman & the Mad Monk" and "Batman & The Monster Men" - essentially modern updates of some of the earliest Golden Age Batman stories which take place between Year One and Long Halloween - they were recently released in the "Legends of the Dark Knight: Matt Wagner" hardcover Looking forward to the rest of the reading orders!

Good reading order. I feel that Batman Year 3 through the end of Legacy Volume 2 is the best run published. I read Cataclysm through No Man's Land and it feels so different; like they just ignore all the subplot developments leading into it from after Legacy. Good review.
I love Batman from Year one to flash point as much as the next person, but I get agitated when some people feel like that's all they should read. Batman from 1970-1986 is good too. 1940's Batman is fun, not a great read, but fun to visit.
I used to have the first 4 golden age omnibus. While I read them I realized that I wasn’t enjoying them at all. So I sold them. I then moved on to silver age and it wasn’t for me. It was different than what Marvel was doing during that era. But if people enjoy those stories, more power to them.

I love that you did a Batman Reading Order Omar! This is my first chance to watch it though. Also, just in case you weren't aware or forgot, the 2012 Knightfall trades collected KnightQuest: The Crusade for the first time, but the Omnibus was the first time that KnightQuest: The Search had been collected, prior to the 25th anniversary trade paperback releases. I had to look that up, because I was pretty sure that the Omnibuses had come out after the 2012 thick three volume trades, but I didn't know for sure.

Thanks for this, I read and collected Batman comics when I was a kid. But I’m older then you so by the time some of these came out I wasn’t reading them anymore. All my comics are boarded and bagged at my parents house in my old bedroom. If I didn’t live so far away I’d get them and see what I have.
As I would like something like that but with the Joker, in itself this series is incredible and each character brought is magic, but with Joker it would be interesting.

I had been purchasing the Dark Knight Detective and Caped Crusader TPBs based on your videos recommending them earlier this year, and am having a blast re-reading so many of my old Batman stories. Now after watching this video, I just had to pop off to CGN & ebay to fill in several holes in my Bat-library --- Curse of the Demon, Year Two, the two Moench/Kelley volumes & the J.H. Williams HCs, as well as the Contagion and two Legacy TPBs. Let's hope that one issue from Cataclysm (553) is included in the upcoming Road to No Man's Land Omnibus (no whammies no whammies...) I am very much looking forward to Part 2!
Your comprehensive reading order videos are a great public service. Keep up the good work! I'm also a Jim Aparo fan but I prefer his earlier Brave and the Bold work, where he did his own inks and colors. Comparing that to the art in Death in the Family is like knight and day. :) I'm also a fan of the Grant/Breyfogle era. It's the most underrated Batman creative team. I've been reading Batman since the 1970s, around the time of O'Neil/Adams's "The Joker's 5 Way Revenge" but for me the pinnacle of monthly Batman teams is Grant/Breyfogle ,for both quality and quantity of work. Between your video and the "Every Omnibus" videos Gem has been dropping, this week has given us a good video "haul."
Holy Batman Omar! I've always wondered about this, & as expected there's a loooot to collect. All I really have here the year one & loeb/sale trilogy absolutes, & death of the family tpb. My brother bought me the knightfall fat trades years ago but I don't know where they went... I always hoped they would collect these in omnis. I still do. Despite the current turmoil at DC, let's hope the no man's land omni comes out & leads to more omnis in the near future. It'll still cost me an arm & a leg, but at least it'll be in premium oversized format!

The Matt Wagner art is SO GOOD!!! I love my trades and it saddened me that the HC they dropped recently wasn't oversized.

Omg I used to own the story at the start of the dark Knight detective vol 2 with the Ventriloquist. I have been looking for it for a while and you just opened a book and it appeared. Man I feel like crying as the story fascinated me so much as a kid.
I really hope you find it again and it brings me so much joy that you immediately knew what it was.

back in the 90's Knightfall was my introduction to comics. My little sister (she's 20) is collecting all the Jason Todd and Tim Drake stories, she has a thing for Robin's. I was in college when Cataclysm came out and wasn't reading mainstream comics, so I'm really looking forward to those Omnibus!

Excellent, work Omar. I've been on a Batman kick lately(Specifically Nightwing which your video was awesome. I've picked up all of Chuck Dixion's stuff on Nightwing) and I'm definitely going to pick some of this up. I love Loeb and Sale's work with Long Halloween(I have the omnibus). I think for me, I enjoy Batman early years because I always love the idea of seeing how a superhero figures out how they go about defending the city. It is why hot take; I actually like a lot of origin stories, like the MCU films. Formulaic as they can be. My favorite Batman comic is a tossup between Hush and Gotham Central. Yeah, I know Hush gets a lot of naysayers, but I'm a sucker for Jim Lee's art and I like Loeb's writing. Also, I love Gotham Central because Brubaker and Rucka are on it and giving me the Shield with Gotham city is awesome.
I still think Hush is one of the best. BEST Batman stories. GC really is in a world of its own.

Volume 1 goes for no less than a hundred buckaroos rn. Not pulling the trigger on that cause 150$ is to much for the set. Sucks cause moench/jones was the first Batman run I’ve ever read.
Some of those out of print editions are SOOOOO expensive right now.

I just read two of the stories by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones, about Killer Croc and Scarecrow, in an old German edition of Batman Special from October 1997 which I had found in a second-hand bookshop in my street, and thanks to your vid I found out about the two collected editions and ordered them at once since I love Kelley Jones's horror take on Batman (Batman: Vampire is one of my favourite Batman books), and at least the story about Killer Croc was also very well written. The first volume of the collected editions was out of print but I found an offer at ebay that was acceptable. These two volumes will make a great addition to my collection. Thanks again for all the great information and I am looking forward to Part 2.

Jim Aparo is my default Batman too and I’m a huge Neil Adams fan who grew up on the 70’s. Aparo used to draw Batman’s cape with the big sweeping style.

Good reading order. I feel that Batman Year 3 through the end of Legacy Volume 2 is the best run published. I read Cataclysm through No Man's Land and it feels so different; like they just ignore all the subplot developments leading into it from after Legacy. Good review.

I love Batman from Year one to flash point as much as the next person, but I get agitated when some people feel like that's all they should read. Batman from 1970-1986 is good too. 1940's Batman is fun, not a great read, but fun to visit.
I used to have the first 4 golden age omnibus. While I read them I realized that I wasn’t enjoying them at all. So I sold them. I then moved on to silver age and it wasn’t for me. It was different than what Marvel was doing during that era. But if people enjoy those stories, more power to them.
@@NearMintCondition Yeah Like I said, not a good read, but fun check out. Batman comics in the 1970s got good, and then in the 80s and into the 90s they got really good.

I love that you did a Batman Reading Order Omar! This is my first chance to watch it though. Also, just in case you weren't aware or forgot, the 2012 Knightfall trades collected KnightQuest: The Crusade for the first time, but the Omnibus was the first time that KnightQuest: The Search had been collected, prior to the 25th anniversary trade paperback releases. I had to look that up, because I was pretty sure that the Omnibuses had come out after the 2012 thick three volume trades, but I didn't know for sure.

Thanks for this, I read and collected Batman comics when I was a kid. But I’m older then you so by the time some of these came out I wasn’t reading them anymore. All my comics are boarded and bagged at my parents house in my old bedroom. If I didn’t live so far away I’d get them and see what I have.

As I would like something like that but with the Joker, in itself this series is incredible and each character brought is magic, but with Joker it would be interesting.

I had been purchasing the Dark Knight Detective and Caped Crusader TPBs based on your videos recommending them earlier this year, and am having a blast re-reading so many of my old Batman stories. Now after watching this video, I just had to pop off to CGN & ebay to fill in several holes in my Bat-library --- Curse of the Demon, Year Two, the two Moench/Kelley volumes & the J.H. Williams HCs, as well as the Contagion and two Legacy TPBs. Let's hope that one issue from Cataclysm (553) is included in the upcoming Road to No Man's Land Omnibus (no whammies no whammies...) I am very much looking forward to Part 2!

Your comprehensive reading order videos are a great public service. Keep up the good work! I'm also a Jim Aparo fan but I prefer his earlier Brave and the Bold work, where he did his own inks and colors. Comparing that to the art in Death in the Family is like knight and day. :) I'm also a fan of the Grant/Breyfogle era. It's the most underrated Batman creative team. I've been reading Batman since the 1970s, around the time of O'Neil/Adams's "The Joker's 5 Way Revenge" but for me the pinnacle of monthly Batman teams is Grant/Breyfogle ,for both quality and quantity of work.
Between your video and the "Every Omnibus" videos Gem has been dropping, this week has given us a good video "haul."

I've always wondered about this, & as expected there's a loooot to collect.
All I really have here the year one & loeb/sale trilogy absolutes, & death of the family tpb. My brother bought me the knightfall fat trades years ago but I don't know where they went...
I always hoped they would collect these in omnis. I still do. Despite the current turmoil at DC, let's hope the no man's land omni comes out & leads to more omnis in the near future.
It'll still cost me an arm & a leg, but at least it'll be in premium oversized format!
I would love if all this is collected in Omnibus format one day.
Oooh a Road to No Man's Land Omni? I'm there! ...As for the rest of this...a fun watch, and a guide to 'things I might get for my nephews someday' without giving them anything too inappropriate. But I may also look for the Tim Drake origin books for myself.
