By this logic Diablo 2 with hardcore is also a roguelike but no one would call either minecraft or diablo 2 a roguelike because you're missing something very crucial on your assertion of what a roguelike is, which is the 'essence of how the game is built'. Diablo 2 and minecraft were built to be a loot piñata game and a survival exploration game so the game mechanics are built towards that. Roguelikes are tailored to give a fast character progressions system that resets itself when you die (both things diablo 2 and minecraft doesn't have). The video is a nice clickbait at best. That being said, I like the visuals and the art. Voice is nice too and you seem to articulate things in a good pace. In general, do more stuff I will hope to see more stuff around.
I sadly don’t know much about Diablo 2 myself but I can’t argue that the game was never built to be a rogue like game itself and it’s original intent is to be a survival game. However I will question is roguelikes are solely tailored to give fast character progression. Especially in this age as roguelikes are constantly innovating and changing and we are getting further and further from the traditional roguelike. Today we have fps roguelikes where as the traditional roguelike is only turn based. While I will say this video is a funny take on the genre I believe this type of game they might be a step in what roguelikes might be and what I wish to talk about in the end of the video.
Aw thank you so much! I’m glad you overall liked the video still but it’s just an interesting thought for me with how far the genre is changing and how these strange games can start to fall into this category it’s something just very interesting to me.
I know it's an old video, but I figure I could toss my opinion. There's a difference between a game being in a particular genre, and a game having aspects from a genre. No one calls Battlefield or Call of Duty online multiplayer an "RPG" just because you can gain ranks that unlock new perks and loadout options. No one thinks of any of the 3D Zelda games as first-/third-person shooters even though they all feature a bow & arrows used in a similar way. The particular aspects of Minecraft--dropping your things, having to reset from a spawn location, optional perma-death mode--are common options in the survival genre, though many will often default to "only lose some of your stuff" rules while Minecraft doesn't give you a setting for it. Project Zomboid is more what people would expect if you said "roguelike survival game."
This is fair! I understand what you mean. I will admit this was a funny thought experiment I had and thus made this video. Do I fully agree with it yes and no. I can see both spectrums. Project Zomboid is definitely the better example of a roguelike survival game from what I know of it.
MINECRAFT! It's open world and when you die you lose everything and are placed in a random location. Did i get it?!?
You sure did! It’s so popular and no one really thinks of this when they play!
@@roguelikerabbit Yuuuush. Suck it people that had to wait 1 minute to find out! 😂
