Is Your Child Talking Late or Is it Autism?

  • Do you have a late talking child? A child talking late could signal several things, a speech delay, autism, ADHD, or other developmental or speech problems.

A toddler talking late can be scary for any parent. In today’s video I’m covering the difference between a late talker vs. autism. Speech development in children who are developing typically tend to show some similarities in how much speech they know at certain ages. Most toddlers are saying about 20 words by 18 months and 50 or more words by the time they turn two. But speech development in toddlers that have developmental delays, a speech delay, or autism show that sometimes they end being completely non-vocal or don’t use language fluently.
While delays in speech and babbling can be normal, there are several accompanying factors you want to consider before stressing out about whether your child might have autism. However, whether it’s a speech delay, ADHD, autism, or late talking, you should know the milestones, you should assess your child, and you should have a plan in place to help your child or client catch up. Developing speech in toddlers when they are older can be much more difficult than when they are young. So as soon as you see late talking or some of the other signs of autism I cover in today’s video, act, and don’t wait.

@livelihood we just stuck with one language and lots of patience. We didn't use therapy but we homeschool and I just do lots of one on one with him and we also started talking more to each other in the home and he just started picking it up. We are a bilingual family so we brought it down to one language so he can manage one first but he is doing well and also understand the other language we speak very well and alot of words.

Iv just found your channel I’m feeling really lost I don’t know much about autism but with all the research and online tests I have done I think my 19 month old has autism but I’m fed up of people around me friends etc telling me they will develop in their own time which I know is true but my son was seeming to be developing okay but at around 15 month he has stopped pointing, no follow pointing, not playing or interested in toys , not listening to name , no speech at all, he understands some words but doesn’t follow simple instructions, no concept of danger, not interested in playing with children that much, loves lights and looks at them close up pulls to his face, doesn’t show me anything , doesn’t imitate. I’m starting to get upset that my health visitor or doctors keep telling me they can’t see me because of COVID-19. I’m in the uk and feel so helpless and upset with this realisation that he more than likely has it but I feel guilty for feeling upset about it x

Wow, so sorry to hear that about your baby. It really sounds like he was vaccine injured if he was developing well and all of a sudden stopped it probably was that. You should look into holistic medicine. I know a lot of people that experienced what you experienced and the holistic medicine helped them incredibly, not only that but also a different diet. Vaccines are not bad, it is how they are all mixed and how many they put at the same time. Look up for the truth about vaccines, it will help you, I promise. Best wishes to you and your little one. I have a question related to autism and speech of toddler age children, do you think that healthy gut and proper diet has a big impact on children with autism? Since these kiddos can be very sensitive to food and texture of some foods, they like to consume very unhealthy rather foods and snacks.

Thank you for this video. My daughter just turned two. She can sing multiple songs and even quote movies. But when it comes down to communicating she isn’t good verbally. My husband and I are both mommy and she will say simple things like up please, hi, bye, bobo (our dog), Oo yummy, and some other things but isn’t good telling us what she wants. She will grab me by the hand take me to the toy or area she wants to play with and point at the object she wants me to play with her with but doesn’t verbally say what she wants. I called my pediatrician today and they are going to send a request to jhach to get evaluated. Like you said they most likely won’t be able to see her till may. Hopefully by then she will say a lot more. Crossing my fingers she is a late talker. I think she is developing in other areas more than speech.

He now can say names of objects, and will try to sing/ mimick songs in movies he enjoys. However we can't have a proper conversation yet. He does not hold conversations in class and still does more side play rather than direct play with classmates. We do have another baby now in the house and he is very loving and tries to help with baby. I will update once the full assessment has been done. We have seen occupational therapist as well, just to help with his relationship with clothes as he hates them lol.

He has no problem with lights, noise, sleep, change of routine etc. He loves playing with kids and is fine with new people but just cant make much conversation because of the delayed speech. He sometimes flaps when excited but very less. He got seen by the pediactric as the school wanted him to get checked and the pediactric thinks he has autism. Me and my husband are little confused with this as we never seen him have any problems apart with his speech if we thought our child had more problems we would have gone to the doctors ourselves. His eye contact is normal now. He says dada and mama (which took a while) when asked and sometimes when not. He's making lots of different noises and his motor skills are way up. Now that the weather is nice he is a very happy baby and we are outside in the forest all the time. I'm stupid lucky.

I know an over 2 year old boy who didn't talk until he met a classmate who was very chatty at his daycare. Maybe you could try to create a similar environment for your babies. Let them spend time to other talkative toddlers.
In my case, my 15 months boy doesn't say basic words such as mama, dada, hi, bye no matter how much i tried to get him to. However he says "stairs" because he likes to climb stairs, or "flower", "key" since he likes those objects, or "fish" because he likes goldfish crackers, or "up" because he likes to be picked up or brought up on a table. My point is that pay close attention to what your babies are interested to and encourage them to speak those words. Of course we need to introduce those words to them. Hope this helps.

Hi Barbara. Thank you so much for your video. I have a 15 month old who does not respond to his name, was progressing with patting his tummy when he wants to go potty but stop doing that much now, kind of stop saying pa, etc, doesn’t really make sound when we say duck say what etc. However he reaches all his other milestone and has great empathy. If someone pretends to cry or if my sister pat me on the back, he thought she hits me and he will push her away. My main problem is his responding to his name and stop talking. We think because we are bilingual and he has multiple nicknames and Vietnamese name and along with English name. Lately
he also turn head making weird face kind of scares us. Some people say its normal they see it in their normal kids. I am concern he has autism. How do we start with teaching him how to say what he wants etc? I believe this will help him express his needs more. Thank you again.

Hello, thanks for this video ,
I have a concern about my 32 months old he understands mostly all the instructions I give him also the simple language we speak with him he also labels a lot of words, he sings few rymes although not very clearly, he is very good at making choice btw the things I give he clearly says whats he wants also points and names the thing he wants to eat or play, but has not started speaking in sentences as yet. But he repeats few very short sentences sometimes
His eye contact is not that grt also his social skills are not good he does not really care who is comg to our house unless we tell him look say" Hi to uncle " stuff like that. (Sorry for the long msg)

My child is three years and one month he hasn’t spoken he says mama and baba but he doesn’t really use it to call me, he just says it, but it’s really confusing because I don’t know if he has autism or not, there are these few times where it feels like he called me using it, but not always, also he doesn’t sit still when I want to hug him it’s like he wants me to be around so if I go to another room, he would follow me, but he would still stay somewhere where we have space in between, sometimes he does eye contact normally and sometimes he just refuses to look at you because He wants to play. Sometimes he laughs for no reason and jumps and runs. Sometimes he doesn’t express his pain so his brother could be literally beating him, and I wouldn’t hear him even scream. And sometimes he would scream at him and beat him to get away. And expresses pain normally saying booboo and coming to me to show me where it hurts. I noticed that when I get angry at his brother for beating him, he laughs. Seems like he likes it when his brother cries.
I’m so confused in what should I do He hasn’t spoken or said any other word than mama and baba and “give me” in my language which is”iddi”
Also sometimes he would cuddle with me and kiss me in a weird way. It’s not really kissing it’s like he’s trying to bite me, but with his lips instead of teeth, but I think that’s because I used to bite him like that because his cheeks are so cute and I want to bite him without hurting him, he only comes to me if he wants some thing for me he would drag me to the place and wait for me to give him the thing he doesn’t even point at things, I feel like I don’t understand him in a way where it really hurts me and makes me cry, I wish I could do something for him I took him to two doctors. One told me he might have autism. The other one told me he’s just fine and I need to wait and teach him words like it was just a speech delay.
I’m so worried about him I was too terrified to admit it and label him with autism, but now I’m ready to just do anything to help him. It really breaks my heart since no one in my family was ever like this and they all already spoke under two years old..

How do you recommend going about intervening in a coparenting situation. My child is 20 months and has some signs of autism. Due to covid we can’t schedule an evaluation our area. The mother and I are separated and I don’t get to spend much time with him but what I do see I see delays. His mother doesn’t want to belive he’s delayed but he’s 20 months and not talking per the guidelines and his age. He also doesn’t really respond to his name. His mother also has him on a lot of screen time which I think could be a factor. So I suppose I’m asking what strategies can I utilize for intervention from a distance or with limited time to spend with the child? Thank you!

Mary or at least someone can you answer my question… it would be much appreciated.
My 28 month old speaks gibberish all the time. He’ll look someone in the eye and will talk gibberish and look like he knows exactly what he’s saying but others wouldn’t be able to understand him. He doesn’t know how to talk but he will point to exactly what he wants. If he wants something he’ll cry and point at it to get my attention and then I just give him what he points at and is fine. If I or someone else is saying something to him, he’ll repeat words but he doesn’t speak them himself unless he’s repeating what others are saying when they talk to him. He won’t talk on his own unless he’s repeating words that others are saying. He speaks gibberish 99% of the time.
Does this sound like autism or could he just be a late talker?
I talked to his pediatrician about this and she asked me autism questions and she said based on the answers I gave her it doesn’t seem like he has autism but I’m still not completely sure if she’s right about that.

Autism isn't a forever thing . As far as it's symtoms . My little brother was severely autistic as a baby no eye contact didn't want hugs etc. He acted like a dog . He liked to be pet when he was happy ate food from a bowl on the floor growled at strangers. Come age 9 little by little behaved that way less and less. He started homeschooling. That helped alot. He now speaks perfectly works online and manages his money better than anyone else in the family. I really think if you can homeschool them makes a big difference bc they don't teach them much In public school and it probably causes stress bc many are very organized and are used to a schedule.

So we just wait till that period, we don't panic.
Note:- But if you see the baby is clueless not responding properly than you need to consult pediatrician.

He can count to 5 with his fingers but only says 2&5 verbally. He understands most commands and responds to his name. Aside from not being where he should be verbally he has a hard time sharing toys, making eye contact, and he makes other babble noises and yells a lot when

Hello, my son is 2.5. His speech is very limited. He is making 2/3 word sentences but it’s still very simple and I’m noticing that children younger than him are on the same level as him if not passing him in the speech department . He follow simple directions but not 2 step directions... he is able to point out familiar things in books and he is able to verbally speak his needs but at the simplest level etc. “Mama, uh nana (banana)” or “Mama uh juice”. When my nephew was his age, he was able to hold a full conversation. I don’t want to worry my self by comparing him to other kids but I don’t want to be in a state of denial. I’m trying to figure out if this is speech delay or a mild case of autism.

My son is turning 2 this feb 11 2022...some day he will turn his head when calling but sometimes not..he loves lining toys, flapping hands while watching, he loves to dance and to sing...everytime I teach him to say mama he cant say it but when it comes to his dad he can say dad, dads, dy or didi...
When I told him that im going to put his diaper on he will lay down and raise his hips and let me put his diaper and wear his clothes...and also when bath time...Im going to told him to go to his sister or his dad to go and wash he will respond by standing up and to go to the bathroom...
    Any idea about his case?

My son was diagnosed with Autism Mild to Moderate at 19 months. He is so smart , loving and caring. He is very vocal and babbles galore.... mamababadadagagaooooo says up, down, baba consistently but also says other words like kiss, more, cartoon, chuppie for his pacifier and more. He is now 23 months. If I get hurt he comes to give me his chuppie, hug and kiss me to make sure im okay or better. If he does something like throw food on the floor and I say, no, no, no, he will pucker up a kiss to be forgiven lol It is the cutest thing ever. I used to be terrified and heartbroken but for what....he was and is a happy baby. I am determined to give and teach him to live his best life just like everyone else. When he gets exited he sometimes flaps his hands or spins but I think its adorable. I can go on and on about how wonderful my baby is but I'll stop here. My advice is don't be selfish and put thise babies first by getting the help they need through evelations. Who cares if they put a label to get free professional services for your love bug JUST DO IT!

My son comprehends well, gestures, has about 5-10 words he used regularly and appropriately. Smiles, makes eye contact, has joint attention, we’ve had him evaluated and we are told that he is “too social” and also has good receptive language. but the things that are throwing me off are his sensory issues. He doesn’t do any of these excessively but he does spin sometimes, used to toe walk but has stopped, lines things up, and has handflapped when excited. He also does great at puzzles but has limited play skills, he can feed a doll and what not but does not really play creatively with toys. A part of me wonders if this is due to us giving him the phone to watch TH-cam videos while we were working from home from the time he was 1 to 2 years old. He is currently 25 months, has been diagnosed with global developmental delays but a part of me just really wants to know if it is asd or not.... how would we be able to definitively tell?

Too much wait to eye contact... that’s really outdated stereotypes being used. The testing being used really needs to be updated. We still have people giving advice who have never got feedback of autistic adults who have families of their own , who have went through trauma from “treatments”. Or those who haven’t Ben diagnosed because of the unfortunate stereotypes. Eye contact shouldn’t have that much weight. As well as should never be forced .

My son who is 2 responds to his name, points to things he wants and to show, brings us things to show or to engage in play with him, pretend plays. He never leaves me alone🤣. He tries to play with his brothers and other kids like handing them parts of toys they are playing with. Copies everything people do. I would say he has about 40 words and has said 2 words together. The only thing I am concerned about is he makes hand movements when he's excited quite alot. I can hold his hands and he won't do it. I'm just wondering if I should be worried.

Why is it that none of these videos ever addressed children who are growing up in bilingual homes? I'm American living in Brazil, everyone but me speaks Portuguese with my son and I speak only English to him. He'll be 17 months old in a few days and he still isn't saying any words. He understands many many things but seven out of 10 times he doesn't respond to his name. I don't know if that's because some people in the family pronounce his name differently than I do or if he just doesn't recognize his own name. Anyways I really really wish that somebody would address speech delays in children who grow up in bilingual homes.

@@limejuice7467 my son's name begins with the letter "R" and ends with the letter "t". In Portuguese the letter "R" makes the sound of letter "H" in English and in Brazilian Portuguese the letter "t" is pronounced as "ch". So while I am pronouncing his name as we do in English, "Robert" , everyone else in the home says, "Hoberch"
So possibly he might not recognize his name when I say it because it's so different from the way everybody else says it. Robert / Hoberch.

I have a 17 month old daughter. She does understand me. When I give her shapes and colors to identify (which one is the purple triangle?) she is able to pick up the correct one. She does make and maintain eye contact. She enjoys her toy piano and books, able to turn pages one at a time without ripping them. Plays the xylophone with good hand control.
She's not interested in a lot of different toys like other children, tends to fixate on a select few. Usually shows no interest in other babies and children. She will occasionally look at another baby, reach for their face, or try to pull off one of their socks. She does not make very many sounds, does say "baba" for bottle. That's about it. She claps hands. Does not point or wave. She doesn't share or hold out a toy to show me.
    Should I get her evaluated?

Did they not assess your son when he went into speech therapy? Just from my own experience i can relate to you. My son was the same, no words, no animal sounds, just some "uh" sounds and was very good at communicating in other ways. Understands almost everything and can follow directions (age appropriate understanding ofc). My gut feeling is hes LAZY and ive found examples of it with him in other things too. He knows he doesnt have to try something new because mommy will do it for him. I understand him so why bother trying a new scary thing? Mom will push my bike so i dont have to learn to peddle etc. What i can tell you that helped me was watching these types of videos on yt (even if its not autism most games work with any child). I found a few games or methods that seemed to get my sons attention more than others. Focusing on single/2 words instead of talking to him in sentences (as they say to do with normal toddlers when they are learning). Putting more focus on my mouth when i say them and saying them slowly. Making life harder for him has been a big help. Example: his matchbox cars are in a clear lock storage box and he has to "ask" to get them. His bike is on a wall hook. I didnt start with food or drink ( except soda or candy) since i couldnt accept sign for it anymore so i didnt want it to be things he HAD to have. Anything that you will eventually HAVE to do doesnt work well and i accept basically any sound that seems like hes trying and not just uh uh uh (can work on more specific sounds with each help lol) My major breakthrough with him was because of bribery though :/ his first two words (mama and dada) were sparked by having two bruder vehicles in sight but out of reach, explaining he had to say mama to get it, then spending a week just repeating mama over and over with focus on my mouth. After those two words its gotten easier to get him to TRY to make different sounds when asking him to say a word, and he will make animal noises now too. Its only been a month since i started focusing on speech with everything so i hope thats good progress. Good luck and i hope for both of us this gets easier soon because its exhausting...

I’m a little worried about my son. He just turned 2. He doesn’t say much. Single, three letter words he can barely manage. Babbles a lot. Was a head hitter when he was younger but I don’t see much of that anymore. His receptive language is ridiculous. Completely comprehensive. He will do anything you ask him to do. Knows all of his body parts by name. Knows colors and shapes. Knows names. Knows food. He knows like EVERYTHING. He can sign a few desires by sign language (more, all done, pointing). He just doesn’t talk. Like. At all.
    His mechanic skills are nuts.
His temperament is amazing. Very patient.
    Very happy. Very skillful.

The girl can hear a tack fall in the kitchen from her room at night 😂 so i know its not her hearing. Her latest favorite word is "bubble" from bubble baths. She just doesn't want to say stuff unless its exciting in my opinion. No other signs of any type of autism or Asperger's. I can tell her to do things and she will do it no problem. My family is looking down on me because of this, but then again it's a broken record in that department. I needed speech class as a kid because i said some of my letters wrong. Have no issues today. This upsets me because i feel like my child is being looked at as being abnormal. Shes precious and sweet. Its so unfair to kids to have these expectations.

It feels good to have someone in the exact same boat. My daughter is 2 now and babbles with only maybe 3-5 words that she uses regularly and she also chooses to drag us around everywhere & to everything!! Our local Early Headstart Program has diagnosed her with an expressive speech delay thus far. She does however have great receptive skills & seems to comprehend so so so much but has always seemed to ignore us when we say her name around 40-45% of the time. So, I'm right on the fence of about being more concerned. An autism diagnosis wouldn't be considered a negative to us. Honestly, not knowing for certain if it is autism or just a speech delay at this stage is more of a stress inducer than anything.

Thank you for sharing your struggle. Although I couldn't tell for sure if your son has autism or not since I have not seen him in person. I suggest you observe him or have him checked by a professional.

Hi i have 21 month old who is not talking, responding when called, and very independent (wont even play with other children, only knows one word ‘dada’. The only time she turns her attention is when we play Cocomelon her fav show. She wasnt always like this, she was very responsive before, loves playing with people and copying gesture. But then she suddenly changes. 😢

You could see a dentist for this issue.
