  • What are the early signs of autism in a 2 year old? That is our most frequently asked question since revealing our 2 year old's severe autism diagnosis. This video includes footage of Leah's' early signs of autism from 2 years old and under.
    Please note: The examples in this video are our experiences with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Many of the early signs of autism are also normal 2 year old behaviors when not combines with other symptoms or behaviors. Please speak with your doctor if you have any concerns about your child having autism.

    DISCLAIMER: Hey everyone! I made this video and a few others early in our families autism journey so there may be language used that is no longer considered correct. In particular the word "severe". I was just going with what I knew at the time. I am still learning everyday about how to best support my daughter and her peers. Thanks for understanding!

      The hopping and jumping seems like normal happy behavior for a 2 year old child. She is very adorable and appears to be just enjoying life. i don't see why that is a problem or a warning sign, isn't that what 2 year olds do?

    • @thatdailymama
      @thatdailymama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@curtisjones400 it’s not so much the hopping or flapping on its own it’s more the excessiveness and repetition. Also all of these behaviours on their own are fairly mundane but when they become excessive and repetitive and they are combined all together with speech delays and very big communication delays is when you may want to ask about autism :) all toddlers dabble in these things but they don’t do it obsessively and all at the same time. Hope that helps!

    I saw your video and cried alot .....
    I have autistic brother...iam from india ,he is an introvert and 35yrs old.I have three boys who loves him so much and also understands what autism is all about.
    ...but the sad part is my bro n law's (husband's younger brother) son is hyper active and i noticed that he did have the signs of autism when he was 9 months....the first thing was not responding or reacting to his name when its been called around 10 to 15 times.....i was in doubt but still knew many things about autism and tried to watch the child closely.... I noticed every single signs related autism because he was so hyperactive and wasn't acting normal at all.....when i mentioned this to my kids they understood....but my husband couldn't....😢i kept crying and directly went to the childs mom and said that she need to consult a Doctor...she refused...and said tht her child is normal

    Hand flapping is not autism. It's just throwing a fit because when they are younger, especially with their first child, the parents are at their becking call every time they squeak or make a noise, so when they get older they still expect immediate attention and handing them everything they want instead of them reaching for it. themselves. I have seen this over and over.... When parents have more children the parents tend to ignore the every want of a child and they will see the second child throws less fits than the first child. Tip toeing is also not autism. It's discovery of well, they have found a new discovery. It's only when it becomes permanent it's questionable. Docs used to say it was neurological, now it's autism? I have never known one child that has visited a psychologist or development doctor that has been diagnosed normal. Please remember many times there are big govt grants $$$$ for diagnosis of autism's and the justification is diagnosing the more kids the more money the get in return in reimbursements to support their program and if they don't they get reduced money in their pocket or lose their autism program. Keep that in the back of your hat next time you see a developmental doctor. .

Thank you for sharing your journey, it will help a lot of parents looking for answers! Thank you for making this video, I was just gonna ask about speech disorders, and also if this could be a result of ADHD, or some thing like dyslexia?
    I’m getting my daughter assessed soon because she shows a lot of signs and struggles with meltdowns a lot. I don’t know if I have ASD (I had every sign in childhood, but it’s too hard to get a diagnosis as an adult) but I just want my daughter to be able to have a successful and happy life.
    She was delayed with walking, and it was a little strange though, because she was really early before that with everything. Like she started crawling at six months, she could sit up by three months. And at eight months she was standing. And then nothing until 15 months she did not take a step.
    I am really confused about the speech part though because I do have ADHD, and my daughter also shows a lot of signs of that. I know she’s a child, but we both struggle with attention issues very severely. She does more like sounds and I also think they might be assisted you because she says words, but nobody can understand them except for me and I think it’s only because I spend a lot of time and watch her constantly.
    I just want to know what I can be doing to help her now I would say she says about 10 to 15 words really well but a lot of them are like animal noises. (Quack quack is a favorite, I also didn’t know that continuously, repeating the same word was a sign, which is some thing that I feel guilty about now because I do that all the time and for a long time I was encouraging it, and I feel really guilty now)
    This is why it’s also been brought up that most likely. I also have ASD. Apparently my fiancé gets very annoyed with my echolalia to this day. I didn’t even realize I did it until about 10 years ago when someone pointed it out and got really mad at me for it.
    And I still didn’t really understand it until I actually did some research on Autism. I wish I knew if it was possible though, because sometimes I feel like the reason why my daughter is like this is because of me, but it has made things very complicated.
    My family is very very heavily against any sort of ASD diagnosis. That’s why I was never diagnosed as a child. Do you have any tips on how I can help my daughter but also not hurt my relationship with my fiancé? He’s really against it as well, but a lot of it is because he refuses to learn anything about it.
    I love my daughter and I just don’t want her to have to struggle through everything like I did. I’ve never been able to hold onto a real. I’ve never gotten anything higher than an 84 in school and that was after a lot of extra help and hours and hours of trying .
    I did not struggle with talking, but more so I would talk so fast that you would not be able to understand what I was saying. Apparently that is not considered a speech problem though.
    My daughter also has this problem I think that’s why nobody understands what she’s saying. I feel like I constantly have to defend that. That was a word.
    This is why I feel like it’s really confusing to tell because like one of the biggest examples is how she says green beans , she says eenbee. Thank you for making this video again it was actually very insightful. I hope you and your family are doing well and thank you for helping mine.❤

    • @thatdailymama
      @thatdailymama  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s so hard to say because a lot of other disorders and issues have similar symptoms or delays so it’s really best to do an assessment. Autism has a pretty specific profile for most kids but I have heard of ADHD being linked to speech delay. Anytime your child has motor delays or social delays and speech delays I will always recommend seeking out a professional assessment if you can. I wish you all the best and just know that you are doing an amazing job mama ❤️

    My son at 2 years old had finger pointing, pretend play, had many friends and was and still is loved by kids, had eye contact, respond to his name most of the time, he imitates, he could folow all simple commands, but had only 10 words and used question sentinces, he didn't understand lenguage much and still has trouble speaking, had some repetitive behaviour and some stimms. He never had had flaping, never tip toed, very social, sweet and happy boy. He had and still has limited food prefrences (he ate everything till 18 months), sleeped always good, EEG is normal. He is now 4 years old and is very behind. He is still not verbal. He has more then 50 words and senetences he uses but it is not very good and i wouldn't call it being verbal because he talks in his own language most of the time. Words he uses are 90% of the time functional. He has no echolalia. He is at 2.5 year level cognitivly and with his speach. His motor skills were always good. They were not shure if he had autism but now they say he is for shure on the spectrum, we just have to do a test in a month to find out wich level. So he is not the clasic case because he doesn't have the typical red signs but i had this gut feeling from when his 18 months when he had regression. I just wasn't 100% shure.

    I have 2 things to say one a mother knows when something is wrong so stop telling her this is a normal behavior in toddler cause it's got nothing to do with your opinion your probably one of those parents that sees it and denies it because you treat it like a disease and 2 if you don't fight to get that diagnoses early you might never get it because they try not to put labels on kids which I get but it wasn't till I got my son diagnosed did he get the help he needed in school. So instead of saying oh this is normal behavior from a 5 10 min video you don't see the toddler every day and neither do I. Keep taking care of that sweet little angel your doing great and don't mind other people's comments.

    It makes me so mad when people that have no idea what ASD is comment “oh that is typical child behavior.” yes, my TWO year old is still a typical toddler and is still autistic! You don’t have to look a certain way to be diagnosed with ASD. That is why it is a spectrum.

    What a beautiful girl. I can assure you that the symptoms exhibited by your little girl is also the exact same symptoms exhibited by my own 2 year old son. He does hand flapping whenever he's excited or do not like something (he seems to be flapping more vigorously if he doesn't like things). He does the jumping, even when sitting down, and I have seen him starting to do this as early as 6 months old. He could only babble random noises, and he has plenty of stimming behaviors as well (he seems to be very interested in pressing buttons though, which my wife told is probably a consequence of him watching me, a software engineer, doing my work at home during the pandemic).

    I think mine has autism but she doesn’t have any of those signs. I guess she’s very mild so far. I would not get her diagnosed because if she gets labeled in my country she can get in a lot of trouble as an adult wanting to have children and getting jobs etc. the system wont help kids or adults with autism but rather use the diagnosis to discriminate them. That’s what I’ve seen.

    There are a lot of children labeled autistic today. The government does give financial help to families with austistic children if they fit within their guidelines. I wonder about that sometimes? Once there is a diagnosis the money starts coming in. Our money, the taxpayers. Everything shown in this video I've seen in all toddlers. Makes me wonder about validity? I saw a family on here with four autistic children. I would have thought good idea to stop at two.

    • @thatdailymama
      @thatdailymama  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I get zero government cash for this and in fact had to leave my successful career to stay home and care for her. Severe autism is a SIGNIFICANT disability and isn’t diagnosed out of nowhere. This video was years ago and she’s very much still autistic today, developmentally delayed and requires speech therapy, occupational therapy and behavioural therapy as well as a level of supervision that goes well above normal. Most families struggle to access any therapy funding or programs and depending on location none may be available at all. Waitlists are years long and many of our kids will never be able to live independently. This life is hard. It’s not a money train it’s a money DRAIN. Your comment is not only wrong but insulting and misinformed.

    For all the people out there who think this is not accurate, I assure you that a toddler with autism is very different from a normally developing child. I have four children and my third child was different from the day he was born. I couldn't pin-point why he seemed different, but he just was. I'll skip over all the details because he is very similar to this child and was diagnosed with autism at 2 years old. But here's the thing that's really important, I had another baby after him and that baby had none of the same "oddities" that my autistic son has. People who met my son don't think he has autism, but people who interact with him regularly can see how he is very different. He's almost 4 and he's finally started to play pretend; he shares his food with his toys... and that's the extent of his pretend play, but it's a big step for him. His delays are mostly social. He has very good speech (expressive speech), but his understanding of language is delayed (receptive speech). His gross motor skills are phenomenal, he even learned to ride a two-wheeler at the age of 3. He's our most loving child (very affectionate) and just had the sweetest heart, but it's different with him... You feel like he's somewhere else in his mind most of the time.
    These kids are different, and it's as simple as that.
