Why? Think about when you're on a long call/meeting or listening to a lecture.... you start to tune out. Your attention fades. It's only when there's a pause, lull, or a change in vocal intonation that you start paying attention again. The same goes for your child. Too many words can be overwhelming and they tune it out like background noise. Keeping language learning opportunities short, sweet and meaningful is a much more effective strategy for helping their communication skills develop.
Here are 7 EASY tips that you can do at home to improve your child's attention, receptive and expressive language skills and help them become functional communicators.
#1. Sing! Use simple, repetitive songs throughout your day (or verbal routines) and allow your child an opportunity to "fill in the blank" by providing a word! (Ready, set, _. or "skinnymarinky dinky dink, skinnymarinky doo, I love _.)
#2. Model one more word than your child is currently saying. For example, if your child is currently using under 50 words, use 1 word that is meaningful for your child (JUICE! UP! MAMA! GO! HELP!, etc). If you child has 50-200 words, model 2 word combinations (GO MAMA! BUNNY IN! BALL STUCK! HELP ME! MORE JUICE!) and if you child has 200+ words, model simple 3 word sentences combining familiar or already acquired words, (HELP ME MAMA, BALL GO UP! WHERE'D IT GO?)
#3. Choose a functional word and use it all day every day. (i.e. HELP, STUCK, GO, UP, DOWN, EAT, OPEN! etc - actions/verbs) Think of any way you can use it throughout your day! Model the word with the action every time (i.e. every time you take a piece of clothing out of the dryer, make a grunting sound and say "STUCK!" or "PULL!" repeat 10 times and then do the action without saying the word, and look to your child to see if they will fill in the blank.
#5. Use and over-exaggerate onomatopoeias as much as possible throughout the day. Onomatopoeias are super fun words that kids love to say and are vowel heavy, meaning that they are easier to produce! (i.e. UH OH! WEEE! YAY! AHH!) Fake sneeze something off of your head AH CHOO! and see if you child will imitate you! tinyurl.com/3d...
#6. Make silly faces in the mirror and see if your child is able to imitate your oral motor movements. By practicing in front of the mirror, your child can visually see how their mouth is moving. Help them move their mouth/jaw in the correct positions if needed (lip pucker, big stretchy smile, frown, etc). If your child is not able to imitate,try fine motor such as clapping, high fives, wave and blowing kisses, or even gross motor running, jumping, falling down (ring around the rosey, etc). tinyurl.com/mr...
#7. Read a book together and emphasize the actions & other important words/sounds. Let your child control the speed of the book and help by turning the pages. If your child is a quick "book reader" then stick with 1-2 important words per page and make them fun and exaggerative, even act it out if you can to draw the correlation between the action and the word. tinyurl.com/3x...

Use FEWER but more functional words to communicate.
2) Keep language learning intentional and fun by keeping their attention and making activities short and sweet. Don't forget to use HIGH AFFECT (facial expressions), alternate vocal intonation and vocal volume.
3) Focus on teaching FUNCTIONAL words vs. labeling, nouns, colors. IF your child is STUCK in their car seat one day, they will need to say (HELP! STUCK! OUT!). Can your child say NO! MINE! STOP! when someone takes their toy? Model and teach them the words if not! tinyurl.com/4u...

My SIL has a daughter three weeks older than my 15 month old. She can label animals, colors, shapes, family members.... my son can say "dada" and that is it. Literally feel like the WORST MOTHER EVER. Doesn't help that they live right across the street, so I never get a break from my feelings of inadequacy.
Don’t beat yourself up hun, every child is different. My mom used to work with special needs kids and there was a 5 year old nonverbal. One day the boy started speaking in full sentences and floored everyone. Just do your research, try your best, and most importantly enjoy your time with your precious child. It will all be okay :)
Every child is different and it's not your fault. My boys spoke later and less clear than my daughter's. If you are concerned speak to your child's doctor during a check up. Most importantly don't compare children and don't compare yourself we all do the best we can.

From a former child prodigy who did everything earlier than my peers I can tell you now that it won't matter in 20 years.I have ex classmates who barely could draw a straight line when I was writing and counting and doing basic math and they now have better jobs or are very acomplished.
Now, my daughter is nearly two and does not say a word ( she is an ex micro prem so that is a factor for a delay ) and while I do my best to find resources like this video to help her start, I also refuse to fall into the mindset that this minor setback is going to define her whole life...because I know it won't.
Unless a disability has been diagnosed, who spoke first and who used the potty first won't have any meaning when they are adults
@@M3L496funny, my son (now 24) loved tv and spoke in full sentences by 18mo. My daughter hated tv and refused to talk until after 2.5

My son is 7 years old almost 8 and he isn't speaking if I get 1 word from him for the day I get alot it's mostly screeching sounds
I was always quiet and when I was told to basically narrate everything all day; I found that advice to be unrealistic. My son was born super early and he is finally starting to talk but still babbles a lot more than actually speaking real words.

I am a nanny of 11.5 years in NYC. The little guy I am working with is 21 months old and has been speaking in 3 and 4 word sentences for a few months. Every child is different. I find talking to a child in sing-song voices, over exaggerated facial expressions, and speaking to them similar to an adult is key. Explaining, describing, involving children in everything I do... it makes all the difference.

Yes! My son isn't speaking much, and we are watching and singing along to Ms. Rachel. I noticed it helping him already. Her videos are great.
Wow the book tip was awesome! I struggle keeping my 2 year olds attention with a long book/page. Never thought of this. Seems so obvious after you explained.

My son is turning 2 in July and he can only clap, point, fist bump, say “mama” and “dada”, he headbutts (that’s super fun 🙄😂), and he can nod or shake his head. I’ve tried practically everything and he just won’t talk :/ it really makes me feel bad because I feel like I’m not doing enough for him. We have a friend who’s daughter is literally 4 months younger than him and she can speak so well 😔 but he understand when we talk to him. We tell him yes, no, give me that please, bring this to mama/dada, and he does it. He can climb into his high chair to show us he’s hungry but he doesn’t try to say it. This video really helps, hopefully I’ll come back in a few months with better news ❤

I naturally do all these. My first three were early talkers but my 4th is 13 months and she’s quiet as a mouse. Only says Dada. But she loves books and songs so hopefully she catches up soon.

My son is autistic and non verbal with apraxia. He doesn’t wanna use pecs or sign no matter how much we try lol. He usually leads me by my hand around the house to show me what he wants. I had enough one day because I was exhausted. He finally started saying “mi mi mi mi” for “milky” when he saw I wouldn’t get up. I got up once he said “mi mi mi” tho!
That’s a good way to encourage talking and showing your child their words work.

My son is 4 and also autistic. He also will not use pecs or sign. His speech teacher pushes pecs hard and it makes him so angry that he screams and cries the entire session. He leads us around by hand and puts our hand on what he wants or he will get the actual object and hand it to me. Like if he wants chocolate milk he will open the fridge and hand me the chocolate milk or put my hand on it. He has a few “words” like dada, mama, yeah, night night, and sissy. He refuses to do any speech related things in front of his speech therapist but he will do things for me. I wonder why they push pecs so hard with autistic children? Every child that I’ve come across that has autism refuses to do pecs.
@@AmandaLeeRex my son is the exact same way!! When I look at pecs I understand lol. They are all weirdly colored and the pictures are all over the place.
I have some printed out pics of things my son likes, like his juice, or tv shows he likes… and he will use them MAYBE 1/20 times lol.
I think when he is older he will be interested in just typing out his needs because he loves the alphabet. But as of right now, the hand leading is what works for him!
My son also screams so much during speech. I had to do in-home because he would have meltdowns from just pulling into the parking lot.
Now we are fully virtual and I just receive advice to implement at home 🫠
Ooof find a new SLP. As an SLP myself, PECS is antiquated. Look for a therapist well versed in AAC and gestalt language processing. Research shows that 85% of autistic children are gestalt language processors.
My 26 month old has a speech therapist that comes 2x weekly for his expressive speech delay. She does basically none of this it seems like a waste of time! This video seems really helpful and ill try adding in a few of these techniques.
Don't feel bad about advocating for another speech therapist. Every child needs to "jive" with their therapist and have that rapport and bonding in order to make progress!

My son would be 3years old next month but just says a few single words like, 'go, up, apple and ball', other times, he just babbles.
His favourite word is Apple, he loves to say it at anytime.
He is not autistic.
I want to get him to start saying sentences but I just dont know where to start from.
So typically we would like to see a child's vocabulary be roughly 250 words before using sentences, and 50 words to begin combining 2 words - HOWEVER, you could teach 2 word combos by combining his favorite word "apple" with other fun words that he already says - you could roll apples around and say GO APPLE!!! or throw apples in the air and say APPLE UP! etc. You could also combine onomatopeas with apple like "UH OH! APPLE! or YAY! APPLE!" or "MMMM! APPLE!" etc. Hope this helps!

This makes so much sense! My LO is struggling to learn words but she picked up on “Ready, go!” From our swim lessons super quick.
My son has Down Syndrome and is mostly non verbal. We have great speech therapists and have worked with great speech therapists. I am also working with him at home so these are super helpful so thank you sooooo much!

Thank you soo much for this video, will definitely try this, I haven't been to a doctor for assessment but recently discovered that he might be autistic after talking to my doctor if I should be concerned at 3yrs he's struggling to form sentences, he suggested I research abt autism and he has most of the symptoms however he is getting there slowly with his vocabulary at 1st I thought he was just stubborn but now he's 3 and there's nothing to be stubborn abt he is struggling somehow. I am very patient with him now and each time he learns a new word it's an ecstatic moment for the both of us!!! Thanks again, I really appreciate this, will come back to advise on progress achieved

My baby is 20 months old and he can recite so many nursery rhymes, 1-20 counting. He knows names of animals, fruits, vegetables, colours, shapes.
This video is no doubt very good and informative, but just wanna share my experience .
I'm a mom of a baby and a toddler. I always focused on giving quality time to my babies even before birth and my both babies started talking at the age of 12 months. Playing, singing, dancing, reading books, weaving stories around them, telling them the names of everything they see on regularly help them learn.
Just curious. Did they have screen time as well?

wow so many amazing tips thanks for this!! it's hard being a first time mother and while some of this seems like it should just be common sense , it just doesn't naturally occur for all of us 😅 i'm a very quiet person so i've been trying my best to talk as much as i can to my sons but i think i'm missing the being interesting and fun aspect 😂

My little is turning 3 in two weeks, and they have a lot of words, but they still use mostly jargon as fillers... my wife and I only worry after gathering with my brother's 3 year old and our out of town cousin who is also three and you can have full conversations with them, their speech feels so much more advanced that our little. It's hard to not feel like we're letting them down in some way because the other kids have had the benefit of daycare and exposure whereas ours was at home (pandemic and financial reasons). Some of these strategies feels like it's beneath them but at the same time they feel like things we should have been doing and didn't, either because we didn't know better or it was difficult because we were also working from home. Ugh.
This doc helped my son improve and get over autism with his herbs .His name is Dr Oyalo on channel. My sons speech and behavior/social skill has improved perfectly using his herbs

My wife and i just started having appointments with a speech therapist for our son. When his speech therapist arrives at our home she just seems to play with his while we do and make sound effects for 45 minutes then tells us to keep doing what were doing and leaves. Is this how a typical appointment would go? At this point we just feel as if nothing happens during his appointment. Thank you for any advice!

It COULD mean that she is working on a few of the prelinguistic language skills - such as attention span, Moto imitation & communicative intent - but she should be communicating with you on which skills she is targeting & why during the sessions. I would definitely ask questions! & also check out my video on 11 prelinguistic language skills!
My son just started speech therapy as well. Mine are virtual and basically just watch us play and give tips and tricks on different phrases to use. I’m giving it a chance but would love to know if your experience has gotten better

I sing ms rachel 'will you say mama mama will you say mama's name" for my 2yr old who is nonverbal and don't answer to her name but each time she heard the song she turn and stare at me smiling am hoping that one day she is going to sing along with me

If this is how you should teach your kids to talk it feels like it should be a medical malpractice case against doctors for telling you just to talk to your kids all day. Because that’s where we’re at and now we’ve been referred to speech therapy despite following a doctor’s directions.

I am a nanny, I have been trying hard to make the toddler speak 2 words, she is still in a 1 word phase but the parents always gives it a wrong meaning. I am upset feels like they are confusing her with words . I know the child is saying Yes but gives haiesh sound for saying Yes and when she wants something she keeps going haiesh haiesh which I understand as she wants it and asking for it by nodding her head down . The parents says Hi in a response when she is actually saying Yes.. while I say yes? She nods haiesh I know she is saying yes to it. And when I tell the mom about it she is like no she is saying hi.. when I wanted to repeat after her by saying yes? Heish yes!!!
What if you’re a massive introvert and just listening to the first few minutes of this video was exhausting? 😅 I guess it’s time to get accustomed.

I find this very helpful thank you! However I'm trying to teach my baby Spanish first but I find this even harder in Spanish because we don't have so many monosyllable words like in English you have to say "empujar" and in English it's just "push" so it's much easier in English :(
Use both words when you speak! Typically children will understand both words but will choose the easier one to say at first. As their speech/language skills develop over time, simple switch to the spanish word and they should easily pick up on it!
My partner watches our 17 month old and he always has background music on. Sometimes I find it’s too loud. Is it possible that music can keep my baby from paying attention? He’s had delayed milestones and I have a feeling it’s because he’s being constantly stimulated with too many toys and too much sound.
Hello and Ciao from Italy. I learned a lot from your videos. Any suggestions and advices for a GESTALT learner child? My daughter actually memorized all the nursery rhymes, alphabets and shapes but no actual conversation. She knows some expressive speech such as " Go bed" , drink milk.

My son is 2yo and is really good in labeling, can even recite planets, count 1 to 50, spell letters in a word, recognize colors but cannot communicate in a functional way, like when he needs help, he just learned “Open please”. My problem is he doesn’t follow when I say No, dont touch that or what.
