- Anbernic has built an impressive Emulation Handheld in the RG556 with an unmatched Price to Performance to date. They cut a couple obvious corners with things like WiFi 5 in order to put in this awesome 5.48” AMOLED screen. A sacrifice well worth it as it doesn’t hurt the over performance.
Did you learn anything new bout the Anbernic RG556? Is this a Retro Handheld you have been keeping an eye on?

Glad I’m getting mine tomorrow, this will be my first retro handheld so I’m so hyped. Too bad I’m not getting the Guc…I mean Anbernic print case with it.😅
lol I think you will be ok with any other case.
First time viewer here. Retro baby is just adorable 😭
Thank you. She sits on my lap a lot when I’m editing
Guy sleeps while recording. No man, true savage.
Great review. I’m stuck with a ps vita currently, do I need to upgrade.
🇬🇧
I haven’t modded a Vita yet to know its compatibility first hand but this handheld should definitely allow compatibility for more systems.
@@CellPhish thanx for the reply. For my needs the vita is perfect.
It can emulate up to 16 bit, Plays psp, ps1, neo geo, older arcades. Vita of course.
N64 is a bit hit and miss plus the controller was weird with 6 face buttons.
The only thing missing for my consumption is Dreamcast, Sega Saturn and ps2, so am looking for a device to play these.
The only other devise I have is a New 3ds for my Nintendo handheld consumption. 👍
🇬🇧
@@RockyFluffyWhiskasrp4 pro will cover those perfectly or the Odin 2 but it’s a bit bigger and more expensive but better.
@@robras2850 thnx. I will check them out.
This does look like an excellent device. I had it in my basket, looking at over $200 including shipping and I saw the Odin 2 at only $100 more. It seemed pointless to go for this when I knew I would end up getting the Odin 2 when I could afford it. I am still curious about that beautiful screen and great looking for factor, but it seems to sit at an awkward place in the market. Once you're willing to spend that much money, it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to just get the Odin.
I can see that point. I’ve also got an Odin2 Pro. You have to understand however that the $100 is a lot for a lot of people. Also depending on where they live there is often extremely high import taxes on it. They each have their use case for the right user.
@@CellPhish absolutely. You're right, there's a valid place for every price point.
@@ungratefulmango got mine for 160 which is half the price of an Odin 2
@@manny1524 yeah that's very good. Enjoy 👍
Depends where you live, me being in Germany the Odin 2 with shipping and taxes turn into around $500! So no, at that point just buy a steam deck, making the Odin for me the perfect waste of money. This one however, sweet and nice price.
I never buy this kind of emulator handheld, so i'm gonna need to ask, do we need to download BIOS for the emulators, or we can just turn on and play right away?
If you get it with a memory card it’s turn key. That being said as you add your own games you may find yourself needing to add some Bios files
@@CellPhish ah.. okay, thanks
Will Crash Bandicoot The Wrath Of Cortex Work Well On The RG556
10:55 Resident Evil Revolutions
Glossy finish seem fine? Or does it feel too slippery.
It’s not. If your hands get sweaty is almost sticky. Hard to explain but I like it. It does show prints but you really can’t see them past the high gloss
@@CellPhish thank you for the reply. I just placed my order. Got it for $160
Question, if you want this device to play 2nd and 3rd or even 4th gen console games, why do you need it to be so powerful?
its cuz it has to emulate how each component of the original console. That means emulating the behaviours of processors, gpu and the operative system aside from runnig the game itself, that sometimes squizzes the original console to its limits and that makes it harder. Best example is ps3 emulation or n64 that still has issues to day.
The rule is typically the device emulating needs to be 8-10X more powerful than the original hardware. Because the emulator isn’t dedicated to a specific system memory allocation is much less
Far better breakdown than mine lol
Retro baby for president!!!
lol sounds expensive
Can I Use The USB C To HDMI Cable To Connect
The RG556 To A TV Or Monitor
There is USB Type-C 1080 display out. I’ve tried a couple crash games haven’t tried Wrath of Cortex but the couple I tried worked
Can you put it on tv and play it on tv? I heard that you can
You can. It has USB C Display Port out 1080p. If you aren’t familiar this will allow you ti either dock or use a Type-c to HDMI cable
I have been watching a ton of video between this and the odin 2. Kinda in a twine between the 2. But this can also play with friends as well yes?
Do you have a video for setting it up with daisho I know I butchered it lol
I don’t. I know Retro Game Corps has a video for setup on Daijishō. I probably should do a setup video with how often I use it. Look forward to one in the future
I just received mine and ordered it with the 256gb with pre installed games but…. No SD card shows up under storage and when I open an emulator to search for games it says none detected…. Do you think I received a broken SD card or maybe reader is wrong? It is there a step I’m missing?
The SD card should be in the box. They typically don’t put them in the device
@@CellPhish yeah there was a SD card in the box. I inserted it until it clicked in place. But still nothing shows up under storage. Bleh
You have to find the rom file on the sd card and select it to each system
Thats the problem no sd card shows up. And I just tried oipening the sd card on my pc, its corrupt or was never set up. The card is empty and automatically asks me to format it. @@johnnypitchuck9052
Why is the video playing at 1.25x by default
It’s not . Not sure why it is for you
how to charge this baby? which adapter? 5v 2a?
Yeah I just use a standard adapter for now. They have been updated to c to c but. This is the first round of devices with it and it doesn’t seem reliable yet
audio not consistent throughout the video
I got a new mic. It’s arm wrestling with my mixer. Sounds fine until it gets compressed so time for a new mixer. Thank you
Bump.
Love my rg556. The screen's just lovely!
Nicer then my Odin 2? Different. (But much nicer screen!)
Oled baby!
You and me both. I honestly was surprised how much I like it. Probably could get a different case though lol
@@CellPhish lolz, yup. But as Ross said, "it's a conversation starter". :p
I rather buy steam deck than this garbage
I’d rather have an Odin 2 Pro… oh I do. But not everyone had an extra $200 to get a Steam Deck or are more comfortable with emulation on Android. There is some massive barriers to entry. Thanks for checking out the video even though you knew it wasn’t for you.
Can't wait til one of these handheld devices come with every RPG from SNES to PS3. I got the 12T hyper spin external hard drive that I plug into a mini PC and it probably has all the RPGs up to PS1 and PSP but GameCube N64 Dreamcast saturn Xbox Xbox 360 PS2 PS3 is pathetic for RPGs. It's such a bummer. For example it has 656 PS2 games and possibly 15 RPGs that's 2.5 percent which is bull crap! If it has 10 percent in each category I would have been absolutely satisfied which PS2 would have had 65 instead of 15. If anyone knows of an external hard drive with a sheet ton of RPGs for all the stuff from PS2 PS3 and everything equal to them in Nintendo and Sega and Xbox please let me know thanks
If I was in your shoes I would build my own drive. Grab a 2TB 2.5” SSD and a case for it for about $70. Then take a look and see what’s archived out there. I just took a peak and there is some amazing RPG archives which you can pick and chose what your into. Building your own is always the right way to go if you have something specific you want. Thanks for stopping by
@@CellPhish if I knew how to do it I would. I am old and disabled from pain and clueless about the computer world, thanks though
