Here's the story in a nutshell: he owes a lot of money because he borrowed a lot of money and he wants the citizens of this country to pay it back for him while he retains what he purchased with the borrowed dosh. His sense of entitlement would be hilarious if it wasn't so serious.

Must be a Banker with that sense of entitlement, failed businesses like AIB should have gone to the wall under free market rules. Instead they socialised losses, and you the public will pay their gambling debts for generations to come.

No Brian, he's not a banker, he's one of the other fellas, a failed developer. So is his pal, the ex Fianna Fail man Jerry Beades. But you're sort of right, in terms of how they view their entitlement, there's not much difference.

    1. What's now the ROI became sovereign on 6 Dec.1922 as the Irish Free State. There's no "Republic of Éire". There's the Republic of Ireland. Éire is the Irish name of the state, and has been since 1937. Ireland is the Eng. name. The Republic of Ireland Act was not a change of name, just an affirmation that it was now a republic and outside the BE. ROI Act signed 21 Dec 1948; in force 18 Apr 1949.
    2. The UK recognised Ireland's ind. in 1922 when the Anglo-Irish Treaty came into effect.
    3. 6 Dec.

    No problem :)
It was negotiated and signed by a plenopotentiary envoy of the UDI government of the "Irish Republic". It was not imposed. Or is everything "imposed" when you don't get 100% of what you want? It's called negotiation. It was also later passed by Dáil Éireann and the House of Commons of Southern Ireland (to satisfy both nationalist theory and the UK government). But there's obviously no reasoning with die-hard shinners, which is why there was a brutal civil war that achieved nothing.

    Yes, unfortunately.
However it doesn't really matter because Direct Democracy Ireland is about direct democracy, not a set of charismatic leaders who will solve all our problems according to their own discretion and initiative (i.e. it's about democracy itself, not any given member).
And no, I'm not a member.

    1. Ireland became a Republic in 1949
    2. You made an error here. Éire was the name adopted under Bunreacht na hEireann (1937), when Ireland was still part of the Commonwealth. The 'Republic of Ireland' only came into being in 1949, as previously stated. Hence, in 1937, the British would have no reason to 'recognise' Eire, as she was not, at that time, seeking absolute independence and departure from the BritishCommonwealth of Nations. In 1949, Britain accepted the Declaration of the Republic and

the British passed the Ireland Act (UK) 1949, cementing Northern Ireland's place within the UK.
    3. Ireland's independence day is January 21st, the day n 1921 when Dáil Éireann issued the Declaration of Independence.
The disparaging remarks, as you put it, are well deserved. It is not for you or anyone to silence critics of those who seek recognition from the public. It is a ridiculous & frightening error to make when citing historical precedents in an effort to 'rouse the people'.
