  • How to get sober and stay sober?
Join host Brett Benes in this powerful episode as he sits down with former Army Green Beret and Air Force Pararescue Specialist David Daugherty. With a Doctorate in Ministry and over a decade of experience in addiction recovery, David shares his incredible journey from military service to sobriety, and how he now dedicates his life to helping others heal by finding their true identity and purpose. David opens up about his upbringing in the Northeast, his distinguished military career, and the personal battles he faced with addiction and trauma. He recounts his struggle with alcohol post-military life and his pivotal decision in 2009 to pursue sobriety and self-discovery. A key theme in the conversation is the crucial role of finding purpose in healing psychological trauma. David describes his own journey to rediscover his purpose after military service, navigating the challenges of sobriety, and striving for mental clarity and personal growth. He discusses how this purpose-driven approach not only aided his recovery but also enabled him to guide veterans and adolescents on their own paths to healing. David underscores the importance of empathy in mental health treatment, contrasting empathetic, understanding approaches with traditional clinical methods that may lack personal connection. The conversation delves into the complexities of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and how certain labeling might restrict personal growth and inhibit deeper identity exploration necessary for long-term recovery. He explains the dual impact of addiction on the brain, affecting both the cerebral cortex and the limbic system, and describes the intense psychological struggle that arises when the limbic system, accustomed to substance dependence, signals a survival instinct to resume use, highlighting the challenging path to overcoming addiction. Finally, David emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and the willingness to change as vital components of recovery, sharing insights on how initial recognition of a problem often stems from self-assessment or external feedback, and stressing the need to balance helping others with self-care to prevent burnout. Don't miss this episode for an in-depth look at addiction recovery, the power of purpose, and the role of empathy in mental health, perfect for those interested in addiction, mental health, veteran affairs, and personal growth. I've known Dave for a hot minute semicolon and I've had the pleasure of seeing many people meet him. Every one of those people coming back to the story that is very positive, and just their short time with him provided a wonderful opportunity for a way to look at things differently and he didn't offer change on the spot that they've never thought of. If you ever have a chance to meet and hang out with Dave it's in your best interest to do so. He's one of the truly good Souls on the planet

Apologies for the voice to text failure on grammar. I'm only part of the way through the interview with dave, I've known him for decades, and I'm still learning things about the man. I've shared it already, hopefully people will come. I know I'd certainly watch a second installment. Pretty cool to see a master at work

I'm one of the guys Dave helped. The changing direction has been glorious, and still going in real time. I would have ended up in the bad part of prison. There's a real good chance I might be the guy Dave mentioned about feeling empathy from another human for the first time. He helped me, and I know the first time I got empathy and really felt it and believe it it came from him.
