    I haven’t used oils or butters on my hair/scalp in almost two years. I now have more curl definition, but the biggest change for me was my scalp. I suffered from “scalp psoriasis” for years and used oil religiously on my scalp. I realized that I was literally suffocating my scalp, and not letting it breathe with all the oils. I haven’t seen a flake in almost 2 years. Crazy!

      @@maniahstallworth7860 You don't need oils and grease on your scalp. Think about it. People that are using oils and grease on their scalp because it is "dry and flaky" still say their scalp feels the same, so the oil and grease is obviously not working. If you properly cleanse your scalp REGULARLY, you'll see that itching and flaking disappear.

    I definitely always feel like people don’t know how much your hair takes in water, when it is properly cleansed! There’s nothing wrong with using oils, however the fear of clarifying shampoos needs to be fixed. I love my creams and butters, but I prefer mousse instead of gels. That feeling of a cast, just doesn’t sit well with my spirit.

      Not ya spirit 😭 But I definitely agree! Working on content for the fear of clarifying as well! Mousse is something I plan on implementing as well. Since my hair is a bit denser, I know I need something stronger now. What I can’t wait for is the ability to do wash and go’s with just mousse and still get the same definition from gels!

To which I stated above! If you know how to use oils when styling, conditioning, or knowing the overall viscosity of the oil(s), and its relation to your very own complete texture... you’ll be fine! I shampoo my hair; no conditioners or leave ins; daily in the summer and 2-3 times a week in the winter. I've been doing it for 8 years. In 2014 I even shaved my head; my hair was waist length at the time; and a little over 3 years later my hair was back to waist length. I use olive oil and a plastic cap 2-3 times per year as a deep conditioner. There were no steps for me. I literally just wash my hair and leave it out or put it in a bun. I don't use gels either, but I'm sure there are some that are worth using; my skin is personally just intolerant to life in general. Good luck to you

    I took my daughter to a dermatologist for acne 2 years ago, to improve her skin the dermatologist told me to stop using oil on her hair and she said hair does not need oil, it needs moisture and something to hold that moisture in, like a gel. I didn’t believe her initially but I stopped oil for my daughter’s hair and noticed a huge improvement in her hair. It accepted product better and still looked hydrated. I know a lot of people don’t clarify their hair, only wash every two weeks (or longer), and are confused when their styles don’t come out right. if someone wants to use all them oils, they should at least wash their hair every week and use a clarifying shampoo lol.

      Oh wow. If that stylist would've let that hair soak in the sink with some water, apple-cider vinegar, and baking soda for like 10-15 mins he wouldn't have needed to wash it 4x. Just once in the name of washing the smell out.
      The concept of using oils and butters and not wash the hair on a regular basis with a clarifying shampoo is counter productive. Of course you'll have problems with all that build-up.

    • @kiya3507
      @kiya3507 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@moiethereal9634 shampoo is on a spectrum from most cleansing to least cleansing. there’s clarifying shampoo, all purpose shampoo, moisturizing shampoo, and co-wash (which is just conditioner, really). if you’re not using the CORRECT shampoo to cleanse your hair and don’t know WHEN to use it, your hair will not be properly cleansed from old product buildup and raw oils. clarifying shampoo has a higher pH & harsher surfactants than the other types of shampoo to really get out old product and raw oils. now, clarifying shampoo shouldn’t be used all the time and only when necessary. using it too much can be bad on the hair.
      Personally, I find raw oils useless. I stick to a few high quality water-based products that already have processed oils, so there’s no need for them. And I wash my hair at least once every 5 days (some might do every 7-10 days). Plus, I clarify my hair once a month. And that’s why I can limit my need for a clarifying shampoo.

After a little over 30 days I noticed my very gray low porosity hair got wet.. soaking wet. I was shocked. So now the hydration is life. I agree. We all need to try different things and figure out what works best for us. I learned early on in my natural hair journey (began about 10 years ago) that oils are a no no for me. Using oils actually caused me to have dandruff, itchy scalp, and my hair seemed to be stuck at one length. Now it’s been waist length several times from simply washing it regularly. Since I’ve stopped adding extra oil (other than rare occasions when my scalp itches), it’s been easier to see my curls defined immediately after my hair gets wet. Now I just shampoo, deep condition, put in a leave-in and some styling product and I’m good. The longest part now is the deep conditioning. Now I hate the feeling of oil in my hair because it stays there until the next wash and it feels disgusting to me. • @sabinamiezah9800
      @sabinamiezah9800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it’s more about moderation in using these techniques. I use water and oil to moisturize my hair and before I tried this I’d used only water for a period and only oils for a period. Using only one or the other dehydrated and broke my hair off but using both has helped my hair to grow and stay strong. I think this method really depends on your hair porosity, your hair’s strength, your diet, and your routine. All of these factors affect hair nails skin etc. There’s also a method for hair growth where you massage your scalp in order to stimulate your hair’s natural sebum and allow it to coat your strands (as a protective shield almost), if you were to try the only water routine I definitely recommend incorporating this method into your routine

      @@sabinamiezah9800 Yes, everything in moderation. I've noticed that my scalp has become less itchy though since I started focusing the oil mainly on my hair rather than my hair AND scalp. My scalp needs to feel like it's breathing. Otherwise, it starts to feel clogged and itchy.

    I somehow knew you were low porosity before you even mentioned it, based off on how you described your hair in the beginning. Low porosity hair can thrive without oils and creams which is fantastic because when you finally add moisture to your hair, it has a tendancy of keeping and holding that moisture, hense why oils aren't necessary. However, my high porisity LOVES butters and oils. It's the longest its ever been. I started my natural hair journey without using oils /cremes and it was immensely dry and would break off. Now that I incorporated butters and oils, it can hold moisture for soooo long. Like you said, high porosity does trap in water easily, but it loses water just as fast, and this is why my hair snapped off without the use of butters and oils to seal in that moisture.

    Something I always noticed about locs is they always grow long very quickly and hardly deal with the issue of being dry. Besides the hair not shedding outside itself because it’s loc’d, ppl with locs, especially microlocs or sisterlocks use little to no products (creams or oils, etc.). Like you mentioned our scalp produces it’s own oils and I think if we clarify our hair and allow the natural oils to do it’s thing we’ll see great differences in how our hair behaves and grows.

    I stopped oil a while back, but I have been using the Pattern Styling Cream which is fairly heavy and buttery. It makes my hair feel great and stays moisturized all week. I shampoo every wash day as well and avoid silicones and I've seen consistency with my porosity being low to normal. I did a wash and go for the first time in months last week and the gel had me feeling so crusty, so many knots, I was afraid to shampoo yesterday but soon as the water hit it, I was good. It all makes a difference!

    Moisture training was something my stylist took my hair through two years ago and the difference in my hair has been amazing. I still use oils, butters, and gels occasionally for styling though because I am a flat twist girl and it is a style that works best for me with my lifestyle. This is a personal choice though and my hair is very well balanced and moisturized even years later. Love to see how everyone’s hair is different and respond differently to moisture treatments.

    I am scared to try this because my hair literally snaps if it gets too dry. However I a0gree that oiling the scalp with heavy oils is detrimental. I stopped doing that because I read that dandruff is caused by excessive oils. I oil less often and only use a lightweight product that absorbs if I do so. I loved a water based product on my scalp but my roots shrunk and matted up and it was no Bueno.

    • @LipsSoSasst

      @MultiTwiglet Yes, shrinkage is a sign of healthy hair. I don't mind overall shrinkage, but having only my roots shrink was a nightmare to detangle. It's harder to work with a mat or a knot that's near the scalp because you have less area to work with to detangle it.

      The oils and butters are what's making your hair dry. That and not washing frequently enough (potentially). Wash every 5 or so days, kick the oils and butters and creams, clarify a few times (over different wash days) to remove all that and style your hair with A SINGLE STYLER (gel for WNG, mousse or wrap foam for twist outs or braid outs or roller sets/wet sets), heat protectant for blowouts. Seriously. I had a dry patch that was a mess for YEARS and within 3 months of kicking oils (I was always oiling it to make it "soft"!!!), that hair feels exactly like the rest of my hair. And my hair only feels dryif I wait too long to shampoo.

    For finger coils, I only use the gel as most leave-ins flake when mixed with gel.
    For my mini twists, I only use leave-in. I used to use gel but I didn't like the crunch and major shrinkage. With the leave in it shrinks a lot less for me.

      > “any type 4 hair youtuber that has hair past their shoulders used grease and oil”
      Hair grows, regardless of your hair type, unless you have a medical condition that prevents it. I doubt those youtubers retained their hair (hence you saying hair past shoulders) due to using grease and oil. There’s many factors to why they’re retaining their length, but definitely not because they’ve used oil and grease. Their overall regimen at best is working to retain length to have it past their shoulders. Growth rate is genetically predetermined. However, it can be increased by proper diet, exercises, and hormonal changes like pregnancy. Nothing *topical* can increase the growth of your hair.
      > “it’s used for a sealant to protect and moisturize your hair”
      Oil doesn’t moisturize or seal in moisture completely. It repels moisture. Water (moisture) evaporates as time goes on. Oil and butters will temporarily slow down drying time. However, they will not stop water exiting through cracks in the cuticle as vapor (moisture leaving). So trying to seal in moisture (with oils and butters) where it’s already going to go anyway is pointless. It’s best to just reset that moisture by regularly shampooing and conditioning. Think of frizz. It’s the hair way in trying to pull in moisture, causing your hair to puff up. (Even though I hate the look of frizz lol). Oils and butters stops that from happening. So constant sealing rituals perpetuate the hair inability to absorb and retain moisture. [I got this information came from two licensed cosmetologist who are well versed in natural hair. Instagram names: @hairbyjenniferrosenyc & @ilovethedoux.]
      > “if you want to add moisture to your hair you can use conditioner or just some hot water on your grease “
      Never heard this from a licensed professional, so I don’t know how true this is. They typically says that if you need to moisturize your hair, it’s dry, and it’s been some time since your last wash day... you need to shampoo and conditioner again.
      > “gel if it isn’t aloe vera gel isn’t doing anything for hair growth and retention but making your wash day easier lol”
      the way a gel performs depends on both whats in it as well as how you did your cleansing routine. like I said, growth is predetermined. nothing topically makes your hair grow faster. gel is a styler, not so much a thing that claims to retain length. it does definitely make wash day easier lol. plus it’s better on your hair. It has the same effect as ones who add too much products that’s simply not necessary. (Ofc, you can do whatever you want with your hair lol.)

    Its also important to think about the climate where you live to decide on what hair products are best for your hair. Hair is more likely to retain moisture in more humid environments than drier ones (in my experience) so having products that seal in moisture can be useful in dry places vs products that define and allow the hair to continue absorbing water in humid places. Of course when you use these you need to clarify the hair so that the next time you wash it it xan absorb the water which can then be sealed in with product. This has definitely been my experience becasue the city where i go to school is way more humid than my home.
