I tried to reduce my oil usage and use more cleansing shampoos, honestly my hair just likes oils, I tried to do a protective style and my scalp felt terrible until I spray water on it and used an oil. I think ppl should present these things like a suggestion rather than a shame contest, you should take what you want from advice and leave the rest.

I think before anyone does this detox they need to actually read the book and follow the stylist that created it. Also if your hair is thriving don’t try someone else path. It could destroy your progress. Your hair was flourishing and this detox isn’t for everyone.

    • @amunuaatta6446
      @amunuaatta6446 3 ปีที่แล้ว +61

Exactly... Ppl be sleeping with their deep conditioner in, which is bad. Ppl be using to much oil on their hair which doesnt help.
Your hair naturally has a waterproof protectionlayer, that allows it to dry easily and just takes in a tiny bit of water - just like our skin. Most shampoos destroy that layer which makes the hair dry and causes caucasian scalp to produce more and more and more sebum oil which makes their hair thw way it is.
So if your protection layer is destroyed, your hair gets too much water wmand therefore will deffo dry out. Your hair is built with oil and water. So look specifically at your history. Every hair is different. Not just structure-wise but also PH-Level wise.
The question shouldn't be: oil/no oil but what does my Hair need?! And different hair needs different things.
Sending love to all the natural queens out there

Here are a couple of tips for this challenge (if you or anyone else decides to go ahead with it)
    1. Oils and butters are not inherently bad for the hair. In fact, when we look at the ingredient list of most of the hair care products we use (shampoo and conditioner), they have shea butter and all types of oils in them. The way it is processed, however, is different. The use of RAW butters and RAW oils is the area of focus. Naturals use it in excess which can prevent the hair from receiving an ample amount of water in the hair (ever notice sometimes your hair takes a while to absorb? it's because of this).
    2. Using lots of water in each step is KEY. Water really is our best friend. When shampooing, make sure you're using a quality shampoo (same with conditioner). When conditioning, first apply the conditioner in your hands and emulsify before adding it to the hair and then add a bit of water (that helps to create the ultimate slip). Elongating the hair while shampooing also helps flatten the hair better for a wash and go (and prevents tangles). Now for the wash and go process, again, water is key. Make sure your hair is soaking wet with water to get as much length in your wash and go as possible. BGC does not recommend gels like Aunt Jackie's. Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic is a wonderful botanical gel that holds in the moisture in the hair. if you want a gel to put on top with extra hold , Innersence beauty I create hold is a great product. Also, I noticed you used a soft bonnet dryer when drying the wash and go. That is not recommended because it compresses the hair and does not leave room for it to actually get dry while maintaining definition. Using a diffuser or a hard bonnet dryer is recommended (it holds the style in place much better)
I really hope all this helps! Not using oils or butters takes some time to get used to. I've been on this journey since March and I realized that I had to be patient with my hair. I love that you were willing to try this challenge out. I wish you all the best (should you decide to continue on with it) :).

As someone who has fine 4 type hair and dermatitis on the scalp. I had to leave the oils and butters ALONE. My scalp is so much better. I’ll put a light moisturizer every now and again. But I mostly stick to shampoo and conditioning, protein, and that’s it. My hair wasn’t used to it at first but I’m learning that less is more. My hair now responds to it. I think shampooing and conditioning more often has been a game changer since water and a clean scalp really is key. Also with fine hair, all of that oil and butter weighs it down.

Not judging cuz if going that long without washing works for someone thats fine but i wash my hair once a week so i dont get build up like that. I just think some natural you tubers need to be careful about making blanket statements like that. They need to be clear about who their target audience is or what problem theyre addressing. This method isnt for ppl who wash their hair regularly . N tell ppl if your hair is fine no need to try. I knew better n didnt follow the trend but there are new naturals that need more disclaimers outside of " this may not work for you" they just need a little more clarity is all.

Okay, firstly, like if you like it then do what you want. But just some points based on what was mentioned:
    1. Your scalp may just be used to the oil which makes it dry. It doesn't need to feel super lubricated always but I felt like there was an adjustment period where my scalp needed to up its sebum level (or... something) after I stopped putting stuff on it. That parched feeling without oil eventually left. I still have other issues (present way before I removed raw oils) but that sorta shock response passed for me.
    2. Related to (1), you're pretty used to how your hair feels lubricated so it'll feel drier without the oils and stuff.
    3. My understanding is that eventually elongation will come but it's a technique thing. Same w the dense roots. There's a TH-camr (Maame cerwah I believe) who stretches her wash n gos with this method iirc.
    4. Leave ins are mostly not included in this "method" because they don't contribute to the style. They can impair definition that you would achieve with just gel. I myself am pretty attached to leave in so I get it 😂. I use it mostly when I'm going for fluffier looks.
I leave long comments lol. I still haven't worked out what gel I like and I'm not a huge fan of the gel cast in general so I've been doing wash and gos with mousse (they don't really last but where am I going + I wash my hair very often). I've eventually managed to get some movement with gel but my hair is short, so I don't get a lot anyway.

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +275

I love your texture so much!
Just a note: this method is supposed to be used long term so you can see a huge difference. It’s essentially “moisture training” the hair.. so the more you wash it and give it water - the more it will be moisturized. The oils give the illusion that the hair is soft but it’s really just coated.

    • @MissCiscaP
      @MissCiscaP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

Exactly~! Key word here is “Training”. Training your hair is a very apt description, it means you don’t see results straight away and may even feel as if you’ve regressed but you have to keep going so your hair can start adapting naturally. It took about 2-3 months to notice several changes in my 4b/4c hair: namely 1) the texture all round has become more uniform (the crown area used to be more 4b and wavy, couldn’t hold a curl whereas everywhere else was a lot tighter and coarse) now most of the sections of my hair is somewhere between the two which means I’m not having to do different things with the different parts of my hair. 2) Curls & Definition. Enough said. 3) My hair is softer~! Maybe I just never found a good leave-in conditioner that worked for me but believe me when I say I tried all the “reputable” brands out there. What I found was that I was becoming wholly dependent on these conditioners to keep my hair soft even as they were drying it out so I was having to apply them up to 5 times throughout the day to maintain that moisturised state when the protein in some of these products was the main problem. It was like an unhealthy addiction with a vicious cycle: dry hair > apply conditioner > conditioner causes dryness > apply more conditioner and so on and so forth. I would sometimes add a spritz of water just so I could rework the conditioner in without having to apply more but every time I’d go in with just my water and aloe vera mixture my hair just suddenly felt revived and quenched so I eventually started thinking, why not just stick to that as the main “product” and gradually started seeing the benefits. The main change though besides the texture and softness is the relationship between my hair and water: I’ve gone from LP to MP and that’s insane because I thought once your hair has been identified as low porosity that was it - there was no possible way that it could change, it was set in stone, like your genes. But I noticed several sections where the water would just sit on top of my hair until I worked it in are now absorbing the water a lot quicker without any push from me. I still do use oils for hot oil treatments about once a month. I’ve never been one to use grease or heavy butters as they were atrocious for someone with a predisposition to dry scalp. The water I use is 4 parts distilled water, 4 parts aloe vera (blended and strained), 1.5 part goats milk conditioner and a few drops of rosemary + vitamin e oil. & that’s enough for me.

    • @timtapp5931
      @timtapp5931 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Also massaging the sebum down the hair is important. Oils and butters are very helpful, but sometimes it seems like they are used with the thought that 4c hair doesn't have natural oils like other types and that's not true. Our sebum has to be massaged through the hair with water. Our hair can be more self sustaining than we realize.

me personally i’ve heard many natural hair specialists say it’s better to not use butters or oils and just a cleansing shampoo a moisturizing shampoo and a conditioner that’s what i’ve been doing and i never have to re moisturize until wash day. and the dry and brittle way your hair feels is because there is no water in your hair. oils and butters just give the effect of making your hair soft and shiny making you think your hair is moisturized when you only get moisture from water.

I think this method actually depends on climate and the hardness of water in your area. If you are in humid Florida, Louisiana, or Southeastern Texas, getting enough moisture from the environment is a possible solution it makes sense. But if you live in a place with a more dry and arid climate like Nevada, New Mexico or Arizona, I'm curious as to where all this moisture is supposed to come from. For someone living in these areas, sealing with a butter oil may be the only thing they can do to ensure to make sure the moisture in their hair doesn't evaporate as quickly.
Also, some places have harder water than others, and it may not be beneficial to constantly wash or wet the hair with that hard water. Unless you can install a water softening system, many are better off just washing once a week and using a refresher spray or distilled water in between to add more moisture until wash day.
Lastly, I think the real problem some are having with butters and oils is sulfate-free shampoos. They are not as effective at removing heavy products like silicone or butters from the hair, and if you are consistently using a shampoo that is sulfate free, that may explain why butters are being blamed as the culprit for dryness of a lack of suppleness to the hair, instead of inadequate cleansing products. I went back to using sulfates for this very reason and haven't had any problems since then.

Not everyone has enough moisture in the air where they live for this to work. Dry air will also have the opposite effect when it comes to hhumectants. Some people bout to be real pissed when winter hits and all that moisture get pulled back into the air. Please watch a
Afophe Atoyebi ( an actual follicular scientist) or the Curly Chemist on their thoughts of this no oils method before trying. Some oils are meant to Pena treat the hair some are meant to protect, some are meant to lock in moisture etc. If this method works on some peoples hair that’s great for them but you’re not actually being any healthier than the regular method of leave in and oils yada yada yada. This method was based off of one sentence of hair science and now people are just running with it without any research on their own. Which again is fine to each their own I don’t get me started on the comments of people try to tell other people how to do their natural hair and how this method is so much better 🙄.

I don’t always use one but it’s allowed! And it’s important to use a gel with humectants in it as well. I still believe in scalp oils but only for specific conditions (like I have psoriasis and emollients are clinically proven to help soothe it). I am currently on this no oils journey right now and loving it. I've eliminated steps and time from my wash day, and my hair and scalp are loving it! That being said, I think there are certain things that just suit people differently so take what you need and throw away the rest lol. Opposite to you, I started this method because oils made my scalp super itchy and my hair very brittle, and I no longer have that problem, so if oils always worked for you especially on your scalp, I would say keep that up. I also use the aunt jackies flaxseed gel, and I found it to be quite drying/ stiffening when used alone. I use kinky curly custard underneath and have found my wash n go's to be softer and more elongated as a result. Blackgirlcurls recommended using botanical gels underneath a topper gel, so you could try that next time you do a wash and go, but if botanical gels aren't your thing, definitely reinstate the leave in. I think you will definitely notice the difference in softness and movement. I think they consider leave in to be an unnecessary step because it's a "styler without hold" but if you're using just the flaxseed gel, I would say it's okay to add the leave in step back in.

Same! My hair was in horrible condition during all but this last year of my 16 year natural hair journey. I tried every oil, butter, grease, leave-in, deep conditioner, etc and each year my hair fell out or broke off more and more. By the time I turned 40 I just eventually assumed I had genetic hair loss issues as my mom and grandmother also struggled with hair loss at an older age. Oils, especially the ones with hair growth claims, always exacerbated the issue. Finally, after listening to Jennifer Rose and a few other stylists speaking the same language my hair has been THRIVING. I didn’t think the crown and nape of my hair would ever not break off. Eliminating raw oils, simply shampooing, conditioning and using one styler (usually mousse def) is all my hair needs!!!

Having a solid cut and finding the right gel for you is important too. I've been wash and go only for 5 months now, I just did my first twist out last week and now I hate it lol. When I started the @Iamblackgirlcurls 30 day hair detox I was using the same aunt Jackie's gel because that's what I had and it's really because that gel is mostly plastic the flaxseed is way at the bottom of the ingredients list with no hold. You gotta use a botanical gel like the uncle funky's or the curl mix flaxseed gels that have more of the actual ingredients your hair needs for this method to work. It makes a huge difference. If you want you washngo stretched just hit your roots with a concentration attachment once it's dry. After 30 days of no oil my scalp was so much better because I was removing the buildup on my scalp from using oils and butters weekly and it finally got a chance to breathe. You really have to commit to the 30 days and practice the technique with the right products to get it down. I will say that I personally still use a leave in because I also rarely use gel and I might be wrong but I believe that leave-ins aren't necessarily banned but rather they're considered cream stylers so it's moreso about understanding that they don't provide the moisture we might think they do and that they are just stylers like gel or mouse but without a hold. Also, I don't use leave-ins with oils or butters high up on the ingredients list. Anyway! Yessss I agree I hope she tries it again with more clarity and for the full detox period. I couldn't get the botanical gels(uncle funky, camille rose, kinky curly) to give me the definition that I would like so I used design essentials honey curl custard and the doux's big poppa along with raw black African soap as shampoo to combat the dryness and irritation that I was experiencing on my scalp. A conditioner for mid week cleansing & a good deep conditioner once a week. My wash days have completely transformed & my upkeep throughout the week is so easy. I did get a continuous spray water bottle to make rehydrating easier.

I love your videos and I hope you can try this method again cause I have 4c hair and it has been a game changer!
    1. The actual method is using no products with oils and butters in the top 5 ingredients and Melanin Leave In doesn’t, so I do continue to use it as I’ve found it helps with curl separation once I add gel.
    2. The uncle funky’s daughter curly magic and Innersense products recommended are CRUCIAL. They are salon quality and concentrated so they work much better.
    3. Getting my hair throughly wet, like letting the water run on it for 3-4 minutes straight before I even start my wash day helps with long term moisture retention as well. As well as throughly washing my hair 2-3 times depending on build up. That way the water can actually penetrate into the shaft.
I hope you can try again one day!

So no one else jumps down my throat for literally no reason, this comment is directly addressing the video linked in the description.
Oh, what they're saying is what we learn in cosmetology school. Use professional grade products. They're chemically formulated to fortify the cortex and seal the cuticle without unnecessary buildup.
Typically, build up isn't properly cleansed because folks are literally using conditioner (hair lotion that chemically closes the cuticle) as a cleanser. *Fred Hammond voice* it won't work. Try cleansing your body with some Jurgen's for like a week. It's the same principle.
There are no detergents that tell the dirt "Hey! Get outta here!" while simultaneously saying "Come on in water, the hair is fine!" *and* no chemicals to gently open the cuticle...
and when I say "chemical" I mean it in the chemistry sense...not the negative, misinformed we typically say "cHeMiCaLs". Nah. remember, water and air are chemicals, period. That's why the caveat of "hazardous" is added to intense chemicals. Most are safe.
Anyway, the chemicals we use in hair chemistry all correlate to pH scale. We use bases to open the cuticle to manipulate the cortex to varying degrees, and acids to close them. Oh, yeah...stronger acids can manipulate hair strands in similar ways of strong bases.
It's not rocket science...but it *is* chemistry.
Y'all are going to take all my first semester of Salon Management and like it 😂

With this method I’m never clear why people do wash and go’s then bonnet the hair down. I do this method and I would say you gotta use a good clarifying shampoo when you first try this method to make sure your hair and scalp is super clear before a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Use regular water (rose can dry the hair) and flat twist with a foam (like the doux’s!) for a way nicer style. If I did a wash and go I’d just leave it out and sleep with a satin pillowcase. If you do all that you shouldn’t have to moisturize your hair throughout the week because it retains its softness and moisture

@@lovelyme9384 Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus Oil are a must. They will be your active ingredients that will make all the difference. Now they can't be put directly on your skin as they are chemically potent and can be harmful. You don't need to buy diluted (as in you can get 100% pure) TTO or EO but they need to be mixed with carrier oils, which are any other essential oils that are safe to directly go on your skin. The carrier oils I use also have great benefits for my hair as well.
The main ones I use are:
      Olive oil
      Sweet almond oil
      Vegetable Glycerin
      Jojoba oil
      Castor oil
      Argan oil
      Coconut oil
I use lavender oil and/or peppermint oil for fragrance. There are other oils that can be added such as avocado, chamomile, or grape seed. You can even melt down cocoa or Shea butters (but not too much) and add them to your blend. The specific blend is up to you.
Personally, I wet my 4c afro everyday/every other day to detangle. While it's still wet (but not soaking, damp is fine) I rub the oil all over my scalp and massage it in. I add a small amount, enough to feel a pleasant cool tingling feeling all over. It really helps with itch and flaking, and provides me with instant relief. I do still use hair products to add in much needed water-based moisture for my hair as the oil alone will leave my hair itself dry as it won't penatrate the strand. After about a week I need to wash my hair to remove excess oil/product and clean up any flakey patches if I've had a flare up. I always let my hair air dry after I style it how I want. The shampoo and conditioner you use is up to you.
Ultimately, this is just a start and personally, it took some experimentation and time to really figure out what worked for me. My scalp has become manageable and presentable and my hair is very thick, soft, and strong. It's been quite the journey but well worth it.
Side note: you can get everything I mentioned from a beauty supply store or if you wanna buy bulk/wholesale size and save money in the long run you can buy from Amazon.
Also please, do NOT ingest anything. Everything should be applied topically. The disclaimer is just for safety 😅

Elasticity is an indicator of health. Malleability does lend to fragility. Plus this method does need time to adjust the hair is used to depending on manual oil so it’s oil production is waaaaay less. The scalp is reactive. Similar to the way people who wash their hair often produce more oil, people who apply oil often and wash their hair weekly or biweekly will produce less oil.

It's crazy how there's so much backlash against the no oils and no butters challenge, but when there was a rice water challenge, a hot oil treatment challenge, a chebe challenge, any ayruvedic hair care challenge there was no backlash. People just couldn't wait to jump on it and commit to it for the WHOLE however many days or months the challenge lasted.
Tbh I don't even see the no oils no butters thing as a challenge I see it as simplifying my hair care routine. It's also convenient in other ways like I don't have to worry about leaving greasy patches on my wall, my pillow and whatever my dorag comes into contact with, so yeah that's definitely a plus.

(Just like the water-wash team & the no-comb team) I've had several call me stupid and a fool for using oils even though my hair is in excellent condition. Why should I change from what works for me? And why do people who don't know me or my hair assume they know better than me what works? There are no magic tricks or one size fits all for our hair. Acting like you know without a doubt what will work on all black hair is misleading. Insinuating that someone is ignorant because they won't do what you do is derogatory. It's not for long hair. Check out @cutitkinky which is @iamblackgirlcurls page for stylists. The other is their ordinary page. You will see that they say most naturals using oils and butters have dehydrated hair and they cut nearly everyone into either a sharp bob or taper style to start regrowing the hair out. Most of the people following this method are being made to start over if they go to a curl stylist so they do not have long hair. The stylists will then help them to grow it out. They claim lots of people's hair is short in the crown so they cut the hair in a way that the crown will grow out bettet with the back and avoid a mullet. Mostly, I think stylists like that sharp look. I've yet to see anyone with long hair on these stylists instagrams come out with long hair after the process.

@@PieceMeals you have to remember that long hair isn't a goal for everyone so that shouldn't be a marker for whether something works or not. Also stylists can only post the clients that come into the salon and give permission to be posted online. so perception may be skewed. I've seen other clients with long hair on other stylists that have trained with them or have similar phillsophies. It honestly depends on who you follow.
