    In this episode, we look into at prototype and beyond. How decals can be stored and organized. Ways to bring your track work to a less uniform state. Does that mean section rail? Is it worth the time and are we error free?!? A well operating railroad trumps the aesthetics. Sure, you can have amazing scenery, but is it worth it, if it's nothing but problems. We have drilled down deeper on all kinds of ideas here. It might just be easier to view the video and add your two cents in the comments. Thanks for watching SOO The Milwaukee Road.

    Those plastic sheets are a great idea for storing decals UNTIL someone carries the binder upside down. Speaking from experience.
    My dad was a magnet shopper. He stopped buying them though because a neighbour dropped by unexpectedly and found him playing with his magnets on the floor. They don’t speak anymore. Probably for the best, they were…. Polar opposites.

    Another great episode, I enjoyed the great variety of this one, railfanning, and watching prototype modeling runbys, you may say proto foaming or maybe not. Your son is really after it on the ice. I would be hospitalized if i tried anything close to that. I really enjoy seeing all of bobs videos and the layout clips too. Nice tips on decals, I need to put some effort into that as well. Cheers Rob

    • @SootheMilwaukeeRoad
      @SootheMilwaukeeRoad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rob, this episode was a time suck…far more editing than I had hoped. Pulling prototype photos, digging through my collection to gather the cars. The play-by-play for the hockey, with the score graphics to create. I try and do everything to the level I’d enjoy…hence the excess hours. 🤷🏻‍♂️ So when modelers like yourself dig it? I know the time was worth pouring into it.

  • @ThomasKlimoski
    @ThomasKlimoski ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another excellent episode. The prototype footage by Bob is always a treat. It is great to see you working on your layout some more. There is a fine line between getting track that looks like the prototype with all the humps and dips, but still operates reliably for a model railroad. I am interested in seeing how your section rail project works out. It certainly has the dips at the rail joints like it does on the prototype. I think the key is not going overboard with the distressing of the track, it just does not scale down the same as other things. Your son's hockey game was a neat bonus, I was cheering for him all the way. The Curmudgeon was spot on with his "magnet" shoppers, I thought it was only me that it happened to. Glad to see you got this episode up the hill without any trouble this week. Notch 8 all the way! -Tom

    • @SootheMilwaukeeRoad
      @SootheMilwaukeeRoad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true Tom. Your advice on the “not over doing it” is key…I did back off on the amount or pressure. A light touch was more than enough. We have to remember…our model freight cars weigh ounces, not tons.
      A number of folks are enjoying the added hockey clip. The segment was intended to be called “Off the Rails”, but it falls under “My Favorite Things” as well. So, why not, right?
      I listened to your Around the Layout podcast, what a quality interview. Anyone that hasn’t heard it, it’s worth checking out: bit.ly/3XVJ1zP
      Keep up the great posts on your end and as always, if you’re in MN? Hit us northern modelers up, we’ll treat ya to a few RR’s for visitation, ops or both.

    • @SootheMilwaukeeRoad

      Well said.
      I’ve always enjoyed hockey, but these kids are starting so young…you’ll find 5 year olds out there that could run circles around my abilities. 🤦🏻‍♂️
      Our son has gone down a couple times and mom’s ready to sprint to the bench. I say, “If we’re needed, the coaches will wave us over.” I know I never wanted my mom running onto the field…plenty of able bodied people are there to help.
      As for Bob’s footage? You’re not kidding, he’s got a goldmine for us 80’s era modelers.
      It’s 100% true, I’ve always felt, projects are just ways to learn for the next one. We’ll always find something that bugs us. Like you say, keep your eyes looking ahead towards the next project to tackle.

      Kevin, I’m a big fan this far. I just started using it. I still have my lifetime supply of Solvaset (purchased 20+ years ago)…some guys said it was to strong, but I’ve had great success. Then a fellow modeler said to try the Markfit Strong…the slightly thicker feel to it is kind of nice. I’ve got Micro-Sol too…what to use?!? 🤔

    • @kba3039
      @kba3039 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SootheMilwaukeeRoad William I also have the sovlaset. I have been building models since I was knee high to a weed as my Grandpa called me. It is just easier for me to use what I have in my shop up first then move on to something else.
      What do you think would happen if you would mix solvaset and Taymia together? Do you think it would work better.

    12:12 That looks exactly like a transfer freight on my model railroad. I could probably walk into the train room now and duplicate that train car for car. Operations Tip: I know you HO guys have nice large numbers and reporting marks on your cars, but in N scale a variety of mixed road names makes operation that much easer for the operators who are poor of sight. Make sure you call out the Car Type, Color and What it says on the side. Your operators with thank you!

    Just a fyI on decals for all. "Put them in a zip lock bag" as well to preserve the film.
    Once the details becomes airborne it will automatically start to decay. By sealing in a air tie bag / or zipper bag they will last 10 times longer, and not fall apart when using or applying them. I have work in the Industry for printing in past. And the detail film only has about two years, in exposed air.

    7:42 2228 almost looking like a snubnose... I believe it was involved in an accident and SOO just never replaced the upper nose light.
    I love mix freight, transfer, and manifests... models or prototype, modern or vintage... I could watch them all day the rest of my life. Thanks for showing them.
    15:18 Atlas, are these the cars where the draft gear was sprung through its body/spine? I have two Atlas Pennsy cars (same doors) with this feature. (1518 [as I stopped the video] was also CNW's GP 7 nee 922, nee EMD Demo 100, not that it matters but I thought coincidental.)
    I've said it before, I could watch Bob's videos repeatedly... as well as yours.
    Cabooses... When you asked "Were 'MOST' Milw cabooses built by Thrall..."(Thrall was sold to Trinity in 2001) I had to think a bit more. I knew that their Wide Vision cabooses were built by International Car Company, but all their horizontal slat cabooses (and other rollingstock i.e. boxcars) were all home built.. Any chance you were paying homage to your July 17, 2020 episode on Milwaukee Road Thrall cabooses? Se04E07 17:58 That's a Thrall built caboose! That cabinet-looking side-door and interestingly looking trucks, Thrall was into refurbishing rollingstock. Wiki says "Most cars were designed for standard gauge interchange service..."
    Magnet shoppers... Brilliant. John

      Your posts are always well thought and epic! I’ll see if I can’t get to all the inquiries.
      2228 was a wrecked unit, that didn’t get a new upper headlight. And I’d agree, the mix in the transfers are great.
      The Atlas is not like the Kadee car, with the center sprung spine.
      Bob’s footage is EPIC!!! I have watched many of his clips over and over, especially to get the radio chatter.
      The Thrall cabooses are iconic for sure and those wide visions were Pacific Car & Foundry…their Internationals were the bay windows they had.
      So much great content, yet do little time to cover it. If you run across any spare time that someone isn’t using?!? Let me know…I could use some. 😆
