    In this episode, we go beyond the obvious, by looking outside the tunnel vision modeling. We take a unique look at scaling an elevator for any scale...1" Scale might get nuts. We do take a moment to go "BACK IN TIME" with Bob Rivard and view his vintage 1986 SOO LINE era video footage. As well as learn a technique in adding a subtle detail to our railroad. In closing, we pay tribute to one of the great Twin Cities railroad preservationists.
    All of this and more, only in this episode of Soo The Milwaukee Road.

    Wonderful tribute to John Hill. Thank you for sharing just a small portion of his story, pictures, and videos. With regards to the elevators, man, when you really get out and measure them, the amount of "selective compression" applied to models really becomes apparent. I think for most of us, we have to compress things down to fit the space we have, but every once in a while, it's great to see something modeled closer to 1:1 scale. Look forward to seeing how you finish yours up!

    • @SootheMilwaukeeRoad
      @SootheMilwaukeeRoad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is crazy, when you think about it. Going to a 1:1 scale can get out of hand quickly and you’re right…the true 1:1 is hard for anyone to attain. Thanks for sharing your take and we’re all so grateful for John’s contribution to the RR community and those around him.

    Another fantastic episode. One of the first things I noticed in the photo of the SOO locomotives were the sand piles. You are right, it is the little details that tell a story and make our models look more realistic. That was amazing drone footage! That was really nice of Adam to shoot that video for you. The views you get from a drone are priceless when it comes to modeling. The tribute to John Hill was very classy. Lots of amazing photos and videos in his portfolio. The Curmudgeon was spot on with his comments, take care of each other and cherish the time with friends and family.-Tom

    Grain unit trains began on former GN with the implementation of tariff BN 4022 in about 1982 which created the first unit train rates on the northern lines. Minimum tender was either 26 or 52 cars to qualify for the rate, all cars were from same shipper in same location at same time. The 52 car max train size was driven by typical road power being able to get the train over a grade at Bison MT ( aka 'the Bison bump") with out helpers. (I worked in BN Grain Business Unit member 1980-1984).

    3:33 4200's (with and without torpedo tubes and different fuel tanks [denoting which ones were used for passenger service?] ) following WC numeration while "lonely" 403 is sporting a dirtier rooftop (much more faded white worn off?) and slightly differently placed antennae and single rear facing horn in front of exhaust, each loco with M.U. receptacles, but note there's no chain connection on 4229, (they gotta duck under that railing)...
    6:54 white pants to match the SOO and blue shirt matching the sky (I wonder if Bob was cringing "get outta the bloomin' shot!")... and look how long that gate arm was!
    John musta been a silly guy! Great photographer! Never met, but I miss him already!
    Thank you. John p.s. I love everything I watch. (Wasn't gonna touch the hopper capacities this time.)

      The 4200s used to be in the 550 series, but MILW SD10s were in that range as well, so Soo decided to renumber the GP9s after buying the MILW.
      On passenger GP9s, there are 3 tanks underneath. Fuel tank is in the middle, and water tanks flanking it. Some of the water tanks were removed, and some were set up to be used as fuel tanks.
