  • BMW Diesel Engine Reliability
    Diesel engines have been getting a bad rap lately. Not only that, but plenty of diesel engines have been removed from the market. However, there are still some older #BMW #diesel engines that we can talk #reliability about.
    We talk about a number of different sizes, generations, and technology within the diesel engines, such as:
    - 3 cylinder b37
    - 4 cylinders m41, m47, n47, b47
    - 6 cylinders m21, m51, m57, n57, b57
    - 8 cylinders m67 (a turbo diesel)
    After giving you some of the details about these diesel engines, I then go on to give you some of the biggest problems with them, as well as the most reliable BMW diesel engines on the market today.

      M57 might be reliable overall but a lot of shit needs taking care of... all of the 3 litres (both 30 and 35d) start having leaking manifolds, breaking swirl flaps which can lead to full destruction of engine etc..
      Back in the days I had an E61 535d, it was a dream to drive with but around 100+k miles everyting started to break down on the car.. And the car was BMW only serviced.
      I love BMW, and still drive them to date, but people please be honest saying they're the most reliable cars / engines.. lol it's simply not true.

    The people in Europe putting about 500-800000km on diesel bmw’s with no major issues with regular maintenance. Specially the oldest models like E39 525tds. The new model engines are very innovative and complicated and they have much more problems. But anyway 99.9% of the Americans don’t know anything about diesel cars I’m not talking about bmw diesels only, they hate it but they even never driven diesel car. Diesel engines are much stronger than gasoline engines. The power and the fuel economy is totally different. I never experience issues with a Diesel engines and I’m driving diesels only in the past 15 years in Europe.

    • @stevenfischer452
      @stevenfischer452 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Us Americans were kinda left with a bad taste in our mouths because of the gm/oldsmobile 5.7l diesel that was horrendously underpowered while also being so unreliable that most people opted to swap the diesel out for a traditional gasoline engine. I would love it if we had diesel cars though, because the fuel economy is so much better than gasoline

    I drive x5 e70 3.0d 2013 in Russia. Same n57. Here -20C in winter is quite normal. Now in the end of 2021 it has 135k km. Not a single engine issue so far. You’re right, I had to replace battery last year. I’m changing oil each 7-8k km, and it will last until 300k at least. As for the carbon filtering system it is now at it’s 40% resource as the computer says.

    Hi , as an owner of a 2011 F10 520 N47T , i had no problem with the engine so far , even if it has almost 210k km .
    When i bought the car , i went to change the timing chain and it was 700 euro in Europe , because there is an other way to change it , by removing the oil tank , that resulting into a timing chain change with the engine still on the car.
    The 700 euro price included the timing chain kit , the new 5.2l of oil , the oil filter and the workmanship.

    Interesting. Everywhere I read..everyone is saying the M57 is the better engine overall. N57 has showed some timing chain issues like the N47, so people stayed away from those. But then again, people also noted that specifically for the E90, after the LCI the car is much better thought out. The i-Drive system is better, you can play music through the Bluetooth, which apparently is not possible on before LCI E90 and some other things. But engines seem worse on the LCI. So everyone is saying handsdown the M57 is clear winner.

    Here in Serbia to pull the engine (n47) and replace timing chain and all other components its about 700euros. If you go to the dealer its about 1000 to 1200 euros.
    The chain can last up to 200 000km. Other problems here with that engine can be related to EGR and DPF, and fuel injectors can clog up. You dont have to buy whole new DPF if your can regenerate. There are service center just for cleaning them with special tools and chemicals. Glow plugs are about 10euros for 1, and labor is about 10-15euros (if they dont break in the engine)

    The M57 won the title four times in a row in the 2.5 to 3.0 L category from 1999 to 2002 was the best as no DPF and cast iron block, and the dual turbo variant that was more powerful twice from 2005 to 2006. In total, thirteen power versions were made, and was fitted to the Range Rover TD6
    The M57 is still considered one of the best and the most reliable Diesel in the business and still in production today, as long as you look after it it will go 500K miles without issues, you can by pass the emission ie Swirl Flaps, EGR, and DPF and you could also Remap the ECU to 400BHP 400 NM easily with decat, DPF EGR Delete and straight pipe on the M57N, in Europe these engine rules the Autobahns :-)

    Have 2003 E39 530d Tourin Sport. It has been bulletproof ! As you say you do have to follow BMW`s handbook when it says do a 60mile plus journing at least once a moth to get the DPF to go throug its cycle to clean itself. I also once a year put JLM DFF regen plus in the tank to give it agood blow through, this cost about £21 in the UK as of now. I also use Wynn`s EGF cleaner to prevent part failure.
    In the UK most Police cars are BMW`s because they are fast and reliable, good range if you take care.

    You NEVER have to replace the DPF if it cloggs on a BMW. You can clean it out and it will be fine for a fraction of the cost of a new one. Also BMW uses some tech in the newer engines to heat up the DPF a lot quicker. They also have manual regeneration if you do not do enough miles... But in this case a petrol would probably make more sense anyway. Intake manifold clogging would be more of a concern but again can be cleaned.. Service it every 8k miles(ignore bmw claims of extened service intervals), run it on the best oil, best diesel and dont lug it around and you wont have any issues unless you consistently run it for less than 20 mins.

I own my second 430d coupe , this car does 0- 60 in 5.4 seconds and limited top speed of 150 mph returns 44 mpg UK gallon. Check out HOW LONG DO BMW DIESELS LAST on YOU TUBE. BMW are not phasing out diesels the 3 litre meets the same emission standards as petrol which here in the UK is EURO6 and don't forget diesels produce less co2.North America has never been keen on diesels, because your fuel is cheap and mpg is not as important, that is why diesels never really caught on.40 % of cars on UK roads are diesel.

    The M57 and B57 are great engines, however, the N57 was plagued with a few issues.
    Had an old E39 525d that I drove to 400k km (250k miles). Unfortunately due to the harsh climate I live in the rust started to get out of hand and I had to get rid of it. Only issue with that car was its shit GM transmission that shat itself at 260k km.
    Currently on an E60 525d LCI with the 3.0 M57 unit. Currently at 258k km. Keeping oil changes to 15k km (10k miles) with Castrol Edge (NOT crap Magnatec), that’s half the service interval of BMW says. Oil is simply not oil at 30k km.

    The issues aside BMW makes some of the best diesels here in Europe.
    I live here and don't really know anything else that stands up to the beauty of their inline 6 diesels. BMW has "mild-hybrid" systems that eliminate a separate starter motor. Meaning, you get to enjoy absolutely seamless start-stop and the support of the electric motor at slow speeds when cruising around town or parking. Also when cruising downhill the main engine turns off completely even at highway speeds. And you feel absolutely nothing when it starts back up. In general, believe me or not, BMWs inline 6 diesels are basically vibration free and extremely quiet for being a diesel.
    Everybody else sticks to underpowered 4 and 3 cylinder diesels with mostly no hybrid or "mild-hybrid" system and manual transmissions. Those are NOT fun to drive!

      Not owned/ driven any BMWs for 10 years, but I found that whatever straight-6 was in the 2008 525d M-Sport auto (the Bangle-bodied thing) was disappointingly unrefined. When starting the engine the cabin shook like some buses(!) and idling chatter could be heard too well. At the time I wished I'd kept my 2001 525d SE manual. The straight-6 in that was super-smooth, the car itself looked better and at times the engine note reminded me of the Triumph 2000/ Triumph Vitesse 6!
      Wind forward to 2022, and my insurers supplied a 2021 (post-facelift) 520d auto as a courtesy car for a week or so. The 4-pot in that (B47?) is staggering. I believe that the B47 had major tech upgrades including reshaped pistons and chambers, as well as getting ADBlue and converted from chain to belt cam. Anyway, it drove like a dream, almost impossible for me to detect that it was a diesel - never mind a 4-pot diesel - under the bonnet. In fact, even standing next to the car on idle, I really had to listen hard for any diesel chatter. I reckon it's the first 4-pot diesel to sound as quiet as a 6-pot. At (I think) 190bhp tune in the current 520d, it certainly wasn't underpowered and the fuel economy was amazing.

    A diesel is in most cases bulletproof reliable when:
    - you change the oil depending on the usage between 8-12k km and use proper fullsynthetic 0w40 or 5w40
    - deactivate the egr valve to reduce clogged up intake manifold and injectors due to the dirtier colder burning process
    - remove the dpf to reduce backpressure on the turbo
    - dont request a lot of torque on low rpm and cold engine
    - use on older diesels before 2006(without urea) 2 stroke oil in the diesel tank 1:200 (jaso fc specification and low ash for the dpf)

Mostly of them are failing becouse guys remap those engine on the limits, they take off the dpf and the egr valve increasing their power with 12, 18% and after 2.3 yrs of abuse the timing chain fails (what a surprise). But if u use the car as she was taught by the manufacter to cover a lot of miles on the highway and mentain her properly is gonna last u for ever the engine, apart a couple of plastic senzors that needs some tlc. DEF warning is for a thousand miles. It takes two minutes, available everywhere. Cold weather doesn’t require glow plug delay here in Texas. Never a DPF issue, but the mechanics can clean, not replace. I get an honest 40mpg at 75 and 80. The torque is fantastic in mountainous states. No problems other than an egr valve replacement, and a rear differential leak/seep, both covered by my mechanical breakdown insurance (till 120k) I have added over 60k miles in four years. I’m getting a Mercedes wagon now. Wish you would do a video on the new e class engine. A bit scary. Should I go v6 or new inline? It won’t be as affordable.

    My 2 cents on DISEL, living with a diesel most of time, the pre dpf ones were bulletproof, for example Ford had 2.0 Tdci on mondeo, 130 hp the one with variable turbo until 2006 were made, only egr off and injectors remade at 200k, still going strong, injectors were low quality Delphi. DISEL are used here only because fuel prices and milage and the working class are buying them and lower mid class, now with increasing environmental problems, they Dont work anymore because it s expensive to fix them so people buy petrol with turbos direct injection and start stop/mild hybrid as they are more reliable, still fuel consumption is still higher. It works in smaller cars here, another problem is taxes yes we have a TAX social medical service care, but they tax you for example in Romania you can't buy engines over 2 liters as this mafia state impose anything over 2 liters 3x 4x the amount you pay for a 2 litre. Big love in USA from Romania 💕💐🏅🏅

    2015 328d with n47 engine currently it has 78,000 miles. Change oil every 6000 miles and use a product called TVT in the oil and transmission to reduce friction and increase engine longevity. The car has not given me an issue yet, Although every now and then when driving it feels as if its missing but its just a light loss of power for a split second, barely noticeable and took me a while to realize it was the actual car and not just a dip or bump in the road. happened to actually catch the rpm needle jump down in rpm for a split second at the same time i felt the tiny jolt. I allow the car to run EVERYTIME i start it for at least a solid minute and i also allow the car to idle for a minute whenever i get where im going before i shut it off. I do not use the auto start stop feature and i run a little diesel kleen through it before doing an oil change everytime. I run a 5w 30 oil. wanted to switch to something thicker but with the tight tolerances i decided against it, as i was scared the thick oil may not get into the tiny tolerances on certain parts. But this is just one example of a non problematic n47.

    Only straight six engines are worth considering from BMW, no matter diesel or gasoline.

    BMWs are just the kind of car you love to hate, when error messages appear, though I’ve found it more prominent in poorly maintained vehicles, but’ you just can’t help to upgrading to a newer model, once you’ve owned one, and understand its requirements, so we’ve gone for a e70 2012 X 3.0d M from the 07 e70 4.8i M. So this has been helpful in knowing what to get the mechanic to go over, diesel wise, But I must say, for every euro car I search for the days, I now insist, the owner show a current computer printout from the OBE port, or I’ve even paid for it, saves losing tens of thousands, just to show that “all” services have been meet, and kilometers have not been tampered with, these days a great euro mechanic can go past history error messages and find amazing A holes that try to scam an interested first time euro owner.

      Some great points, thanks for sharing. This is another way to mitigate poor maintenance.

      The bit about OBE port printout sounds really good advice, thanks! Applies to buying any recent car of course. I take it they can be understood by laymen, albeit cross-referring to the fault code list definitions...?

    7000 dollars for DPF replacement?!!
    Here we pay in UK we pay less then 500 dollars to delete DPF and EGR on top of that we get the car remapped as an added bonus!!🤣🤣😂

    DPF filters carry a lifetime warranty though. Well in Canada at least. Don't know about the US. Dealer is obligated to replace it for free should it get clogged up. You could I guess remove it altogether as well. I've heard of people doing that.

    8:06 Did you mean M57? That's what is in E70 X5's in North America. I deleted all the crap recently, runs great, way more power with the tune, but I would recommend a DOC (like a catalytic converter) if you don't like the exhaust smell.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you would do it again ? Also, have you been following my vlog as right now I am discussing the latest X5 fiasco. This Wednesday will reveal more on this topic

    • @mediocreman2
      @mediocreman2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ECPP I haven't seen your vlog, I'll check it out. I absolutely would do the delete again. I know everyone says that when they do something that costs a lot of money, so they can justify their decision. But really, the truck changed personality in a good way. It's a bit louder than I might prefer, just because I hate to be 'that guy' in the neighborhood with loud exhausts, but compared to lifted Dodge diesels, it's not even on the radar as far as volume. Like I said, the only thing I would probably do differently (and might still do) is get the DOC installed because the smell can be obvious at times. I did the swirl flap blanks, both EGR's removed, DPF removed, and DEF system removed. The necessary tune really changed the driving experience (it's a lot faster). You can also get tunes for the transmission that 'wake up' the 6 speed transmission. I changed all my fluids in the transmission, differentials and transfer case beforehand, as well as replaced the transfer case gear that wears out commonly. Removing the EGR's will also prevent carbon buildup in your intake manifold/valves.

      So there was no reliability issues or concerns after the delete? Most of the issues I seem to find relate to emissions equipment and nothing really motor wise
