The producers really wanted to get Toshiro Mifune (who often closely worked with Akira Kurosawa) for the role but he didnt speak English. The role was originally very serious. It was the director who wanted Pat and when Ralph and Pat tested, they knew they had Miyagi down. It just took the producers a lot of convincing. Its sad that Pat got so much hate from other Asian actors. I mean he was nominated for an Oscar.
Ralph is amazing as Daniel but he will always also be Johnny Cade to me. He was the perfect Johnny. He played Johnny as the troubled yet sensitive and loyal kid you would protect with your life.
when i watched Karate kid back in the 80's, instantly loved ELizabeth Shue's character, it has that something that you can't quite put your finger to it but it's there, charm i guess. I knew she'd make it big. Same as the little witch from Harry Potter, soon as i saw her, i thought " cute girl, she'll be a beautiful woman and probably successful in the future". Same as Natalie Portman when i saw her in The Professional. Always the same story, pretty girls with spirit and charm always make it big.
