Nissan Leaf 2020 review | Longer range version but is it worth the cost?

The Nissan Leaf is the best selling electric car in so many markets. It just feels like Nissan got in there first. Now the car has the longer range 62kwh battery but with the added cost of this version over the 40kwh Leaf, is it worth the extra outlay?

Nice accent. Good review. I have a 2013 Leaf. It's pretty good. I bought it with 12 bars of battery capacity. It lost one bar after a year of charging mostly to 100%. However, the range is still good. I mostly charge it to 80% now and I only charge it if I will drive it the next day. I also try to charge only at night around 10 PM at home when electricity is cheaper.

Tested the 40kwh one, kept my 2014. Power felt the same for the first 60ft , even though it’s a higher power, suspect they toned it down as its front wheel drive. After 60ft the new leaf keeps going. One foot pedal is nice, same a pillar! That pillar has caught me off guard a few times. I’ll upgrade in a few years when it’s value. New this thing is crazy expensive. Thoughts .... Nissan is asking too much for what is essentially and old leaf. cheaper to keep my ICE car for out of town trips.

385kms happens to be the distance to my mother’s house. I am in Letterkenny and she’s in Wexford. But there’s four chances to charge on the way down and I’d normally stop twice anyway, so you don’t really need 385kms range to do 385kms. I’d be happy with a 28kwh ioniq if i could afford one. Great review as always Nobby, like your relaxed style.

I have 106 km to work. 95% motorway driving. I usually do 110-115 km/h except when overtaking lorries and other slow vehicles where I might speed up to 130 km/h to clear the fast lane quickly.
There is no electric car out there for me that will let me get to work and back on one charge in the winter months, which isn't prohibitively expensive. There just isn't. I can buy three modern diesel cars (Citroen C3 that I currently own) for the price of one Leaf.
I'm crossing my fingers that Teslas' new battery will 'bleed' into the rest of the electric motor industry and make the prices more competitive. Even though I'd want a Leaf (which I do), it's simply not a financial option for me at the current prices.

Nissan has had a crossover model called Kicks for some time now, and recently gave it their e-Power set-up. Electric motor (from the Leaf) for traction, modest battery, and the 3 cylinder engine from the Note which is there for the sole purpose of keeping the battery happy (it is not connected to the accelerator and there is no gearbox). Drives like an electric car, but you only ever run it by a petrol station after a lot of kilometers. Costs 10,000 pounds less than a Leaf. Hope Nissan sees fit to make it available in Europe, too.

Don't be fooled. I've owned two Leafs now (a 2015 and a 2019) and the batteries do just fine. Unless you live in Arizona or other places in the southwest US where temperatures often exceed 110 F then you should be fine with the Leaf's air cooled battery especially if you only charge at home with Level 1 or Level 2 charging. What created issues for the early Leafs wasn't that the batteries were poorly designed it was that they couldn't take being abused. Owners were pushing the Leaf well beyond its design envelope. Operating in areas where ambient temperatures often exceeded 100F, combined with high speed cruising down the highway, would cause the battery's internal temperature to rise to near damaging temperatures (which I believe is above 122F). These owners would then stop at a Fast DC charging station and hit an already hot battery with 50kW power causing the battery's internal temperature to go well into the red zone. This was found to be the main culprit in causing premature capacity loss in the early Leaf batteries. Indeed, the vast majority of premature capacity failures were for vehicles owned in Arizona with owners that admitted to regularly using DC Fast Chargers. Another issue was that early on it wasn't well understood that charging Li-ion batteries to 100% every time was very bad for them. The early Leafs would allow charging to 100% and would allow this no matter how hot the battery's internal temperature was. This was slowly degrading the batteries with every charge cycle. This was solved in 2015 with Nissan's new heat tolerant battery chemistry and software that would not allow charging to 100% (although the dash gauge reads 100% it's now actually only about 95%). Finally, it's also important to understand that these early Leaf batteries were only good for about 750 to 1000 "full" charge cycles to begin with. While 1000 charge cycles is more than adequate for large batteries having a range 200 miles or more per charge cycle, it was not nearly sufficient for early Leafs which used a tiny 24kWh battery with only about 75 miles of range (they were so small that they were constantly needing to be recharged in order to get any usefulness out of them). 1000 charge cycles x 75 miles per cycle wasn't going to give a very long battery life. Even if you treated them perfectly you'd still be lucky to get 75,000 miles before seeing significant capacity loss. Battery size has a lot to do with how long these batteries last. For example, 1000 charge cycles for a much larger battery pack that gets 250 miles per charge cycle gives a battery life of over 250,000 miles. Clearly SIZE MATTERS with Li-ion batteries. Used for typical daily commuting purposes, by owners that charge at home, these new larger Nissan Leaf batteries will enjoy very long lives. Any one that tells you differently is avoiding the facts as well as mountains of anecdotal and empirical evidence. Most people will not need active thermal cooling for typical commuting applications. If you want or need to frequently use high power DC Fast charging and live in Arizona then yes, you'd be better off getting a Tesla.

@@Tron-Jockey Well written summary. We have a 2013 LEAF with 68k miles and now added a new 2019 LEAF Plus. I was just thinking with our 24kWh being at about 86% still, if it was a larger 40kwh version even it would have experienced about half of the charge cycles and would be in even better shape. I am interested to see how the 40 and 62 kwh batteries do over time in a mild climate. I think they will do quite well.

  • @MrShadowhearth

400km is enough, even for someone like me and I do 120km a day for work. The problem for me would be charging at home as I don't have driveway. Even if I had dedicated charger, I bet some ballbag, would tamper with my car charging, just because it's bored.
Then I am not sure about driving noise. Always was a petrol man and really love that engine noise feedback. Pure silence could be a bit weird.

What about the important questions: did they fix the fast charging problems, or the annoying speed cap?!
I can definitely say from driving my 2018 Leaf: that blind-spot will kill a pedestrian or a biker! Large vehicles can be obscured enough that you might not notice them, and tight corners you gotta lean into the passenger seat to see clearly!

For my time driving the car I would've had passengers 50% of the time. All air con etc on, never turned anything off but would've ran it in eco mode a good bit as there's more than enough power in eco mode. When you turn off air con you'll see the range jump by usually 20/30kms but it's usually an insignificant amount. I'm not sure of your experience with EVs but if it's new to you, the idea that climate control being used cuts the range in half etc it's just myth stuff.

Really... you're reviewing the car and you're telling about cutting down trees, have you heard of a sustainable tree plantation for paper? Not to mention it could even be recycled paper but anyway.... back to the car. My car arrives this week and all people in Australia talk about is how far will it go... considering 80% of the time they use it for work. Where I live and work its going to be excellent. Thanks for the review, looking forward to pushing down the pedal. ... oh... you refer to gears? mmmm. Thank again.

@@NobbyOnCars Quite possible that it did. Either way, I remember being curious last year and looking at the prices as soon as it came out and dealers had those 62KW Leafs listed for €42.2 K, that is the top spec model, probably excluding other charges... I was following this as an option to upgrade from 40KW Leaf but obviously price is outrageously high and cannot justify an upgrade and as you've said, 40KW Leaf sounds like a bargain in comparison . I haven't seen the ID in the flesh or driven it obviously but I'm sure it will be similar to the Leaf in the sense that it's a stand alone car, a totally new model that is fully committed to being an EV so I'm sure it will be good but it will be more expensive than the Leaf, the 40kw battery Leaf really is an affordable enough car, you can get one for around 28k brand new after grants. I'd say the interior of the VW will be a bit classier too.

The Leaf is not as "green" as my 71' Mustang Mach One.
50 years old and still looks (and runs) like new.
Car longevity affects how "green" a car is. It takes a lot of energy to manufacture a car.

Be careful buying these from a dealer that doesn't maintain them properly while sitting for extended periods on their sales lot. I bought my new Leaf Plus in April of 2020. It was a left over 2019 model that had been sitting on the lot for nearly 18 months and likely not kept within the proper SOC limits for long term storage. Sitting for a couple of weeks or even a few months without being used isn't a problem but sitting for a year and a half requires that they be maintained within a certain SOC range. I did have an issue with one of the 96 modules. I noticed that under ideal conditions I could only get 170 miles before the battery pack flat lined. The SOC gauge would also become very erratic between 50% and 30%. I used an app called "Leaf Spy" and a Bluetooth OBDII reader to verify if all the cells were balancing properly after a full charge. I noticed one was way too low causing the BMS to struggle trying to balance it with the rest of the pack. I took it back and they replaced one of the Modules free of charge. All has been well ever since.
