- Produced by our friends at Roborace, take a look at the story of how the 'Lucas vs Arrival' challenge began and what has happened in four previous races to date.
Can the AI finally beat Lucas di Grassi?

Can I sit inside that with a GoPro on my head while you run it autonomously? I’ll sign whatever forms we need.
Bro Never got an answer
Surprised to not see 75kg or so added to the driverless car.
Indeed!
It's not like they level out all drivers' weight in F1 or any other category, the lighter the driver - the better.
In this case they've managed to make the driver weightless (well maybe a USB stick/SD card heavy).
@@eskanderx1027 Thats not true any more. F1 drivers have a minimum weight of 80kg. They all weigh under that, but the ballast is topped up to take that into account. Hamilton was a big fan of the change as it allowed him to put on more muscle without worrying about being too heavy, muscle he feels is beneficial in driving. Ocon is 8 inches taller but weighs 7kg less.
Gone are the days of people like Mark Webber having to weigh stupidly low to compensate for being taller.
@@eskanderx1027 You are incorrect they do in fact include the driver in the minimum allowed weight in F1 and many other racing series. Therefore they are the same weight.
@@flyingpanhandle Oh didn't know that, interesting...
I am a big fan of your company
Even though you are not making anything for the consumer level
Something about you does feels diffrent from others
Adversarial challenges seem to really help NNs improve quickly. The slide correction was a great trick to learn, but surely would be honed much more quickly if you gave roborace more days out in snow and on skidpans.
8:13 "First of all I have 25 years of experience while the AI has only 2 or 3 years so that's a bit unfair"
He clearly does not know that the AI might actually have thousands of years of experience by just running one day of simulation. It's called parallel training. While humans can only train 1 at a time. The AI system can replicate itself thousands of times and trained in parallel in massive supercomputer clusters.
I'm not sure Arrival is doing that kind of training with its AI system at the moment, it sound to me like they are still doing things the deep blue way and not the Alpha Go way.
@@DavidKnowles0 I agree with you. I think the arrival team is missing some important features that the machine learning algorithm must take into account. The engineers need to wider the simulation environment with different road track situations. Clearly, in the video the AI system was not able to predict that going through water surface would be a bad decision and this is based on the training or reward function established by the engineers.
in the same 'perfect' condition
They're not using ML. Just textbook motion planning Algorithms.
Naruto's shadow clones
When they've done the race in the car, put Lucas and the AI in one of the Arrival delivery vans or the bus and see how fast they can get one of those round the track. :-)
Actually that gives Lucas more advantages then AI race car because race cars are much planted to road and really quick at response compared to van or bus also those thing have more understeer which usually AI can't handle at high speed
Even Teslas can't cope with standing water they can't decide how deep it is and the reaction on the steering all they can do is react to what happened
I wish this hadn't been filmed like a bad American reality TV show with cutaway interviews and dramatic music
I liked it. To each their own.
engineers behind this dont deserve air time? nah man small teams of geeks are the best
When do you take this to the Nurburgring ?
Ur videos are absolutely fabulous to watch. Kudos arrival team.
What is the chance you will make personal vehicles? This idea matched with an elio style car would bring the masses into the ev market.
You’re doing amazing things Arrival
Roborace has become a cartoon with the adding of the metaverse, and unappealing to watch.
Last I saw was many of the cars having trouble starting the race; much less, racing against each other. If the cars are too expensive to crash, go to a smaller scale where the repair costs are less.
At least they could install FPV( DJI or Fatshark) with pan/tilt head tracking so they don't even need a seat or driving controls for the driver in the vehicle. At least they could get better training data than a simulator could provide.
This is a landmark in human progress. Fantastic work going on here.
thanks for defining "driverless" really needed it
Cool marketing, now as an investor can you just focus on actually building vehicles.
Would love to see your company get into tiny homes. I love the idea of using one of your ups trucks to be fitted into a tiny travel space 😁🤙🏼
Yes, that would really be great!
Small trucks are nice
Super interesting. I think the thing that will propel this to the next level is the ability to use kerbs, but I understand that may not be feasible due to changes in height, color changes of the kerbs, texture / handling differences, etc.
If AI can't detect kerbs and know how to use them, i can't see it being safer than a racing driver. Some conditions might require you to use similar things in real life to avoid crashing
Can you just release full onboard videos?
No! It's not dramatic enough!
The rain threw a new interesting dynamic, a challenge to this ROBORACE. However, it's my opinion that all racing must be conducted in dry weather. Also Lucas must be advised that he cannot drive over the red border lines and keep only to the track, to give the A.I a fair chance at winning. In short, humans must not take any shortcuts to beat the system. That is only being fair, apples to apples comparison. This is because the A.I is programmed not to tread/run over red border lines, so humans (Lucas) must also drive on the black asphalt to give comparable racing time results, so then the A.I will have a fair and just advantage.
This video is like a investment pitch.
it's looking sad when returning to its home like it's saying itself, "next time, buddy."
To be fair, this is a little bit misleading to use the term AI. This is an autonomous system that uses classic motion control, path planning and perception pipeline. AI system e.g. AlphGo is about using reinforcement learning to let the agent learn on its own, without any input parameters and tuning. (Although to the wider audience, smart system and AI sounds like the same thing). But still, kudos to the team for making this great progress in optimization. The next version will be a blast!
Give ai the control over 4 wheels power and watch it, with steering wheel gas and brake pedals it limits the ai's potential.
I feel they are seriously handicapping the system to be fair to Lucas, and to prevent naysayers from claiming they were cheating. But maybe if you also gave Lucas controls over the motors too.
@@cypvh74 If Lucas can control every motor rpm on each wheel or even every wheel speed through corners by all means let him have it, if he is using his every ability to control the car i believe AI should be able to use its all ability aswell. I dont want to be driven around by an AI system myself but to be able to push the technology i believe we should not handicap thesse system, it make them angry :)
To me, this shows just how extraordinary the Human Brain is. The driver accounts for wet surfaces by using electrical pulses from the brain and organic tissue in muscle movement. At this point, AI must have someone input the stimulus of the wet surface. Love this video.
If the AI would be able to do torque vectoring by having control of each wheel's brakes independently it would make it way quicker than a human for sure!
That'd be sick... Imagine the AI being able to control aero, each wheels' breaks, suspension etc. all at once.
@@monkemode8128 exactly!!
Wow! Great movie about an awesome technology. Congrats to the great result!
Interesting video. During the first race in 2016, I hope Arrival was able to motion track the way Lucas drove, so they could copy the same Algorithms and apply it to the robot to achieve the same driving patterns, speed, and human like driving behavior. Study human driving patterns as test subjects, so that the algorithms can then modify based on unsafe driving behaviors to safer driving behaviors thereby increasing speed and efficiency in results, also matching race time.
Nice, ultra widescreen. Fills my whole display.
U have 21:9 display on that?
Hm... not so sure you really want to say (paraphrasing) "how long before an Autonomous Driver does something no human would dare to do..." ! :-)
They don't have the fear of death so anything is possible with it
They mean how long before ai does things that seem counterintuitive or bizarre by normal racing standards but actually achieve a faster result. What things are we missing or overlooking that an ai could discover.
So uplifting. Top drawer stuff, Arrival. Keep moving!
They should have done a remote control 1/4 scale version with DJI googles FPV. That would generate usable machine learning data and be entertaining.
That wouldn’t really work. The physics wouldn’t translate 1/4 scale, and you’d have to build a perfect 1/4 scale track to match.
The engine would behave completely differently for example as well.
They should try to enter indian market and thats the only way to announce their arrival to the world. INDIAN electric market is huge and will actually take over after COVID
Hop you guys test it again soon and win, it'll be a big victory for your solution and approach to EV/Autonomous, hope you guys succeed!
Oh look the arrival has arrived
I live in the Pikes Peak area of Colorado. I love to see your race car in the Pikes Peak hill climb.
we can finally enjoy (would be) fatal crashes without anyone losing someone..
but the engineers would be in much pain tho
A very well made mini documentary - could do well on television
it's the future...
Drivers make the racing
Is it me or did all that footage make the car look incredibly slow?
I think this should be a new thing where it’s like IA and F1 togther
but what about the additional weight of the human, are there balasts?
Seriously this is great and excellent work. But there are brands who are doing great on the road with autonomous driving feature and continually upgrading. So put your stuff on the road as soon as possible. Pls
If you don’t push yourself you will be replaced.
Video games have been warning you with “scorestreaks” 😉☺️
Make Britain proud!
if its a robo car than u can ditch the cabin all to gather to lower the mass even farther down
this is all cool and all but i can't wait until we have the capability to have F1 speed AI vehicles racing each other
Most importantly, your Autonomous Vehicles (AV) should talk to other AVs. And not other Arrival AVs, but ALL AVs. That way they will be safer for both the passengers and everyone else.
>90 degree banked turns in races could become a real thing with this tech.
Wow, I thought it was Eliot from Fully Charged at first!
dont give up guys, you will win.
regards,
NS5 (i,robot)
So, in principle 'the human' adapted a tad bit by choosing to drive on the curb while AI decided to stay 'true' and avoid such maneuvers. Very interesting case studies and all the best to the team.
May be the limits they try to achieve lies in principles they hold so close.
In real life, to avoid crashes, you can't "stay true", you need to use whatever you can to minimize possible damage. So AI has to learn to use everything in sight in the most effective ways
AI will bring us some of the greatest comforts to our lives in the future.
Imagine sitting in a racing car driving itself like this. Would be scary af.
At that point, skynet became self aware.
Really interesting Video, incredible technology. Hats off to the entire Team. The only thing that could be better would be a few less buzzwords, sometimes I felt like I was watching a commercial.
Without _____ and _____, it won't win against a real racing driver. There's more to it than taking the fastest line. But already impressive having closed the gap against DiGrassi.
it could have defeated if it understands the puddles and uses kerbs
it was a dry clear track the results would be even closer
I wonder if you can have the car just watch when the pro drives to learn.
Not a fan of watching a computer racing this car or any cars, I don't find that enjoyable at all.
But I must say, this prototype looks awesome, so instead I would love to see it 100% dedicated to electric racing with a pilote in it, 100% absolute track performance oriented, 100% ICE killer eletric hypercar, like the WV ID-R =)
is arrival participating in the AI race at indy?
12:45 sounds like what the robot car would have said😅
Overall great job guys. Somehow racing will be even more exciting long after combustion engines are gone
ive never seen itself correct like this before....
A new Race indeed.
Next time in Silverstone vs Lewis?
Imagine if they license this technology. You're racing in a track with your friend and you enable the autonomous racing and just have a chat with your friend while the car races itself on the track
Literary the ghost in the machine.
I want to see Arrival collaborate with Nvidia in some way.
Nvidia could buy Arrival for $170M now! With over $100M cash in Arrival, that's a great deal for them.
Arrival has departed and another project has died.
If they can beat us at chess they can definitely beat us at racing
Probability eventually but what the ai needs to do in racing is a lot more intensive than chess.
I clicked even though I knew it was gonna be pathetic
ok, so, when is the next test?
also: lap time decrease varies a lot on the track itself, that's never talked about. If you'd want to test, test on the same track or same track(s) each time. Then then "gains" are a lot better to see...
Next, I don't see how this has anything to do with safety. It's never explained, so if you don't explain it, then I see that as a red flag.
Perfect
Made it about 5 minutes. This should only be 4 minutes long.
But can Lucas beat M. Rossi?
Biggest achievement
Contrary to humans, machines have potentially no limits. It just a matter of time before they'll beat us in literally everything we do. By a long shot. Let's hope they'll beat us also in compassion, empathy, and kindness.
That’s a better future then Terminator to me.
When it comes to racing, there are obvious physical limitations of the car. Great drivers can exploit the car's limits. The only area where AI can beat human racers is by making less errors, and there is no limitless amount of time or speed to gain
Could you flip the words around between the human and machine to make your comment logical ty.
Race them at same time...
Want to blow them away with tripple vortex system
This is amazing!! Lets have an AI championship series like formula 1 but no drivers.
Ah Yes, WhatsApp, the most important tool XDXD (8:40)
its Telegram lol
So thats why amazon wants to beat it so bad
AI can possibly end racing
if anyone wondering the result:
human racer: 3
robo racer: 0
Might be a fair fight if the ai vs your too old granny
We don't need ai for everything
Wait for Tesla FSD race mode :D
😂
Totally impressed... How about a partnership with Tesla to make the ultimate car for the future. P.S: The future is now!
FUTURE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AI. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Id like to see AI used only to help and supplement mankind. Not replace it.
Skynet approves.
obviously
Skynet approves
These guys are tool assisted speedruning real life wtf
This is amazing just imagine watching a ai racing each other. That would be the future
I've been day dreaming about this happening for 20 years. 🤩
THE FUTURE IS HERE HEHE!!
you just need more sensitive sensor material,,and others is over done,,has roborocket for most sensitive sensor material like in autonomous missile,,,or seems like "trafo electric" on robotic system after sensor (from base word "sense",Artificial Sense"cencored) before processor,,,thanks,,hhe
you must be forget there is bigger than AI that Artificial Brain,,intelegent is only very tiny part from entire brain,,wait for what, here the change,,reduce the entire human life weight,,thanks,,hhe
Yes ai can beat the world and i love AI and AI is our next future world which wecare a part of it
of course it will beat the human on Racing. but not on the road
Interesting but the video production is too slow.... 16 minutes to tell a 3 minutes story.
