When you are filleting most fish, I was taught to leave the first side you fillet attached - ie cut the flesh on the first side you fillet as normal but only cut from the top and leave the bottom attached with the skin so you can use the fillet to prop up the fish for filleting the second side. Appropriate time to watch this video: yesterday the herring-season started in the Netherlands - as you may (not) know, we eat our herring more or less raw, with some onions or pickles, a white bun.
@@earthalydelights Being very Dutch and addicted to fresh herring, I find the canned rolmops extremely disgusting - but that’s easy for me to say, with herring-stalls and -foodtrucks at every shoppingcentre.
For those wondering about the Dutch and their raw herring: it’s street food - grab the tail and let gravity do its job. Here bravely shown by BBC correspondent Anna Holligan www.bbc.com/news/av/world-europe-33166980
@@margreetanceaux3906 I can't imagine how good rollmops are fresh. Being introduced to them by my Dutch in-laws here in Aus. But, having fresh fish off the great barrier reef made into Nummus (cooked in lemon or vinegar, no heat, like rollmops). The shelf bought rollmops aren't bad. I'd be very strained to call these guys' 'cured' fish sushi though. Every sushi shop here serves their salmon raw, as it should be. Fresh is best, pulled straight from the river or sea and sliced thinly, mostly. Not that that's likely here (to get fresh fish), away from the coast for normal Aussie fish and I live too far from the salmon farms down in Tasmania. I do eat salmon often though, three times last week. I do love a feed of Kookwurst/rookwurst and sauerkraut, with some mashed potato, too. I first found that in the German beer halls back in '88 when we had the World Expo here. My grandmother on my wife's side made big clay pots of sauerkraut before she came out here in the '40s... she was a sweetheart. She made many good dishes from her homeland.
@Margreet Are you by any chance referring to that canned fermented fish "delicacy", storsrtomming(sp?). If you can get past the putrid smell, it's actually quite nice, same as a really stinky cheese, the taste is amazing. I've had it 3 times now. First two times were a complete fail, "insert gagging sounds", but the last time I got it down and it was very palatable, besides the smell of course. Cheers from Georgia, USA

My mouth was watering the entire time you were eating that salmon. It has been so long since I have had fresh salmon but then I live far away from where it is caught, I am thankful we even have it in the stores! Catch more if you can, it truly is some of the best eating around. Take care.
TRUE "combat fishing" is when you're ONLY one arm's length away, and casting out into the river in concert. Everyone gets into the rhythm, or they don't (and get their lines cut). LOL Try bleeding them as soon as catching (cutting the gills). Also, roast the heads and pick out all the meat. The cheeks are delicious, and a lot of good/tender meat on the heads. Love the scoop method for getting all that good meat for burgers! And the sushi looks too good!
@@downunderfulla6001 last time I fished sockeye in BC, which was a few years ago, you had to tie a piece of pink wool or something to the hook so it was technically bait. But we would floss, which is basically snagging. I’ve just never seen a fish legally kept being snagged in the back.

This time next week I will be on the Kenai Peninsula, hopefully landing sockeyes, too! Thanks so much for all the inspiring videos and sharing so much of your journey, you two have really gotten me motivated to do some gardening, and now this fishing trip! Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to your channel here on You Tube, and sharing it with all of us!
Seward is the only place really hot right now, unless you count Ship creek in A-town for kings. Still a bit early for the big run on the Kenai river, but there are places to go to get some fish, and if you really work for them you can catch some on the Kenai river this early headed to the Russian river(the run just started there and I am headed down there this weekend/end of week)
@@godlessevilfeeling Good luck! I'm so excited to work my tail off and bring home some fresh fish!!
Oh man, the color of that salmon flesh. Beautiful. Thanks as always for the fantastic videos :D
Don’t piss off that kid with the bat! 🤣
I thought the same! 😂
You guys are so lucky to be able to use mother nature food store the way you do!
These are my favorite videos you guys make. Catch, harvest, cook... the whole process. And you utilize the whole fish. I respect that. It's lost in this throw away culture. I do alot of the same stuff, but very different varieties of fish, animals, plants, etc. Here in Iowa. Don't comment much, but keep up the killer channel you two!
I'm living my dreams through you guys! Nothing better than harvesting your own food instead of going into a box store. I would make soup out of the salmon heads and stock out of the bones.
Use sinigang soup base.
Appropriate time to watch this video: yesterday the herring-season started in the Netherlands - as you may (not) know, we eat our herring more or less raw, with some onions or pickles, a white bun.
Oooh rollmops! There was a Dutch deli near where I grew up in Australia and their rollmops were the highlight of any visit to that shopping centre.
Man I’d love to fish as much as you guys do. And that deep, orange-red hue of the flesh of the salmon. Gorgeous.
I would have been so nervous dragging the fish up behind that kid who didn't look like he was paying attention behind him at all 😂
I have had the pleasure to enjoy your program form the beginning of the Alaska trip , I truly appreciate your hard work and efforts you have made to share this amazing journey so far .Thankyou so very much for the outstanding adventure, homesteading ,cooking and all around honest program. I love it .well done folks,if you enjoy this and want more ,let’s like subscribe and comment.
The collar are delicious when smoked.
So is the belly. Good lord.
I think salted and pepper grilled is bomb
Wow. Awesome fishing trip. The dream.....
We've been getting limits the last two weeks. I've been smoking fish for two days. It is delicious 😋. Glad you guys got your limits. Sounds like a long hard day. Next time you are down let us know. We have a travel trailer you guys and the pups could stay in, and process your fish.
Sockeye salmon with green onions, pepper and salt on top and with F☺️fresh squeezed lemon is my favorite 👌🏽✨
The salmon in Alaska are a deeper reddish orange, compared with our salmon 🍣 in Scotland, I can’t wait to come to Alaska to do some salmon fishing.
Here in Sweden our wild baltic salmon is often almost colorless, really light pink but our smaller sea trout is red/deep red to the color.
LOL
Try bleeding them as soon as catching (cutting the gills). Also, roast the heads and pick out all the meat. The cheeks are delicious, and a lot of good/tender meat on the heads.
Love the scoop method for getting all that good meat for burgers! And the sushi looks too good!
i cant believe they wouldnt bleed from the gills, thats like fish processing 101. also wish that they fillet better so there is less meat on the bones
@@JohnDoe-dw7or john doe, sitting on his butt watching other people live, oh john doe
I Love the sound of bird and rooster in the morning keep fishing sir..
Love from Philippines
Yay!! Next month is going to be crazy in Kenai! Salmon summer here we come!!
Love the whole salmon harvest. . not easy! So important. Thanks again for the entertainment and education 😁
It’s crazy that snagging is legal! Beautiful fish.
Everyone has their opinion. Personally it’s just a lure without the colourful body.
Salmon come out of the ocean to spawn and don't eat so they don't generally hit lures.
@@downunderfulla6001 last time I fished sockeye in BC, which was a few years ago, you had to tie a piece of pink wool or something to the hook so it was technically bait. But we would floss, which is basically snagging. I’ve just never seen a fish legally kept being snagged in the back.
@@explorebc4x481 unfortunately I only know the regulations for my state of Australia. I do wonder how the native people caught fish throughout time
@@explorebc4x481 Only in saltwater in Alaska. Anyway you can get them is legal. Freshwater has all sorts of regulation.
Living the dream,, thanks for taking us along!!
I was just there!! Good fishing!!
Salmon color or tuna collar I consider some of the best bites. Absolutely wonderful broiled with just salt and pepper.
Hey from Memphis, TN! My favorite part of any day is when I get a notification that y’all posted! Love your channel! 💕✨💕
Hey neighbor!
Cookeville,TN here too! :)
@@HoneyRowland Hey neighbor, Bristol here
Hey we are practically neighbors. I live 20 south of Memphis in North Mississippi. Go to Memphis several times a month.
Now that's my kind of trip to the grocery store, one my boys wouldn't mind making! God Bless!
This is the 2nd time today watching your show. I am just amazed at how many people are all line up and everyone has caught their limits. The salmon look so good. Thank you for sharing your life and adventures with us. Be Bless
There you two go doing it again! Antagonizing me with all the fishing your doing. :)
Sushi tip: you wanna dip the fish side of the piece in the soy sauce, not the rice. And you can put a little bit of wasabi on the fish before laying down on rice. And wrap the seaweed strip around the fish and rice! Like a little belt :)
Oh yes! I usually just mix in my wasabi with the soy sauce!
We need more great video's from you guys, I wait patiently between footage. Eric you are great with that knife. Thank you for taking the time to enrich our lives.
So envious of what you guys eat!
They are great 👍. Living on their resources surrounding them.
Dont people get their shins hooked in that crowd 😂
Beautiful veggies! That salmon is making my mouth water!!
