We traveled to Sweetheart creek to fill our freezers full of Sockeye Salmon. This is a trip we make once a year and we catch enough fish in an hour to feed our families for a year. There is only one problem and that is the bears are also fishing for sockeye at the same place. You are literally fishing with the bears.

To all the ignorant naysayers posting comments: this is a completely legal and sustainable process for SUBSISTENCE living. The residents of Alaska are allowed to hunt, fish, and gather what we need to live in our beautiful state to help offset the high costs of store-bought items barged here from the lower 48. We are not allowed to sell, barter, or trade these animals. We are allowed to proxy hunt and fish for the elders in our communities. If your answer is that no one should live in AK, my response is that anyone who wants to live in the lower 48 right now is nuts. Have you ever sat and thought about all the fuel that is burned, animals displaced or killed for making new farmlands, and packaging that ends up in landfills and oceans for the foods that you buy ALL YEAR LONG in the grocery stores? Stop your virtue signaling and realize that your existence costs this planet more than anything AK residents living a subsistence lifestyle ever will. AK Fish and Game staff work with wildlife biologists to set bag and annual limits determined by their census data. Where we live, we're allowed several deer per year, and do you know why? Because the deer population on our island is so high that hunters help keep the population in-check so that fewer deer starve to death over the winter. That's right. Animals in the wild don't have Disney fairy tail endings. They don't go to retirement communities when they get old, they don't turn into magical pixie dust that floats off to the stars; they die of starvation, predation, or disease. So maybe think a little more about the cost of your existence and get informed about that which you speak before calling anyone in my state gathering just enough food for their families greedy or a disgrace. Oh, and we also waste little to nothing of what we gather, as opposed to the 30-40% of food that the rest of the country wastes (www.fda.gov/food/consumers/food-loss-and-waste).

I yelled over to him and said " you got some!" He said " Sure did...you want one?" Of course i said yes! i got about 10 really big fillets off that Salmon after i got it home. Once apon a time I did a bit of part time eel fishing in New Zealand, 1989 to 2008. Few months each summer never more than 6 ton a year (6,000 kg). It fitted in well with the off season for main job trapping fur. Eel fished in very similar types of stream using fyke nets. Some times in waders, often no waders, very selective where I would use the waders as if you fell into a stream like the one shown & they filled with water you could not move in them or swim, like being in a straight jacket in water. Where the men were casting from would be a spot I'd not risk standing in waders! Too dangerous! Had a couple of very close calls in such spots myself. I Slipped in the water in waders. Once with 100 kg of live eels tied to me (in 15 kg mesh bags). Once with a net & net setting tools in hand. If you do that in waders & live like I did you tend to 1) Believe in God 2) Never ever risk a repeat performance! & If I was catching those salmon I would have for sure used the waders in the shallow bits, sure, but taken them off, left the boots on, to do the casting! As to those eels, here in NZ Government regulation has destroyed the commercial eel fishery. No problem to catch a 100 kg a day. But legal regulations make it near impossible to harvest or farm them. It should be a billion dollar farming industry here as we have massive amounts of elvers (unlike the rest of the world) plus heaps of water on our farms with a million farm ponds empty of farmed fish. A heap of free meat (wild pest animals like deer turkey canadan geese possum wallaby). But OUR VERY Different fishing laws; if you throw a cast net over salmon, here in NZ, were we have your King Salmon. Then you would likely go to jail or at the very least pay thousands of dollars in fines for doing so!

Love to watching fishing videos, I've been fishing for, well never mind how long 🤪, but never salmon, usually pike, trout, muskie, bullheads. Matter of fact took the grandkids fishing today, comical the grandsons ( ages 12 & 14) didn't catch any, but our granddaughter (11) caught 5 😂 and the boys were not happy at least we don't have to compete with bears yikes.. I'm a newcomer to your channel, and am loving trying to get caught up. My brothers and I fished Sweetheart Creek years ago, and it is so much fun to recall that experience as I watch this video. I stood at the base of the waterfall you can see upstream from where you're casting, fish so thick you felt as though you could walk across the water on their backs. We live in Wyoming, but my wife is from Juneau, and she's beginning to tire of me telling her to pack her things, which I've pretty much done non-stop since finding your channel. Such fun!
