Graves’s betrayal feels like such an ass pull to keep it in line with og MW2. The betrayal has nothing backing it up. In the original we were being overrun by Russians and saved at the last minute by Shepard only for him to execute Roach and Ghost. It hit so hard because we didn’t expect it and we were in a dire situation. Instead in MW22 we him go from “nice job guys” to “I’ve taken the whole base and city over, restrained Alejandro’s men, and have killed a majority of city’s population” because muh plot twist. If Graves had pulled the 180 betrayal card while we were in a time of need it may have stuck better but we were expecting it at least I was. They should’ve made a member of 141 turn traitor, now that would’ve hit hard. Instead we’ve got a half baked attempt at recreating something from og MW2 just for the sake of recreating it.

Exactly my thoughts. If we were gonna re tread Shadow Company and Shepherd betraying us again, then they had to take a different route, considering it was all in the back of our head. It should’ve been more nuanced. Shepherd is far more reasonable while at the same time, being far more suspicious, so he at least works, considering he only tried to assist America’s allies. Graves on the other hand had to do a 180. Why couldn’t he still maintain a likeable persona? Instead of Graves being conflicted about having dealing with Soap and Ghost, he shows no remorse and decides to kill innocents.

And it will be Alejandro who will reveal it with his dying breath after Graves shoots him.

The problem with Graves betrayal is that it’s a complete 180. He goes from charming and likeable that gets along really well with 141 and Mexican Special Forces to an obnoxious ass. I don’t know they couldn’t let Graves still be likeable after. Instead, let’s just have him execute civilians on some kind of power trip demanding Hassan’s location even though Valeria is in his custody and knows where he is.
    From
“All Shadows listen up, Mexican Special Forces, 141, they are your BROTHERS now. Treat em like your own.”

He was only working with 141 and Alejandro to destroy the missiles. Shepherd probably didn’t give a shit if he killed them or Mexican civilians to get what they want. @howdoichangemyusername9802 ปีที่แล้ว +334

@@tabrisss818 it’s still executed poorly. The only hint that Graves is gonna betray us is his claim that he has enough soldiers to take over the country which could just be interpreted as him seeing the mission as a cakewalk. Beyond that all his interactions with 141 suggest even if Shadow Company does betray us, he’ll stay as an ally. Instead he acts weirdly out of character and wants to kill civilians even though he ordered his men to minimize casualties in the AC-130.

@@tim7330 I don’t think he admitted that he hid in plain sight when Valeria was confronted. His statement meant that despite her power and influence, 141 and Shadow Company are more than match for her and the cartel. But even if you are right it’s still bad. I don’t care if this is how psychopaths work in real life. This is a story. And in storytelling, if a person acts out of character due to the plot requiring it rather than going through an event that changed their personality, or several hints that point to this being their true personality all along, then it means it’s poor writing.

Graves is a mercenary, this is how they are. He couldn't care less about things like honor or civilian casualties, when Shepherd's paying him fat stacks to do all his dirty work. He's also pretty clearly a psychopath given how nonchalant he acts under situations involving killing people. And yeah, while it's true that the military tries to get you used to the idea of killing someone, Graves is absolutely fine with the idea of feeding Hassan to wild animals or torturing the everliving hell out of Valeria.

The American flag was obviously the first thing to get the player going but Shephard saying he doesn't care HOW they got American missiles should have been the first huge red flag but it doesn't give any more information than that. The sudden betrayal of Graves and Shadow company is so spine chilling. Bringing the story back down to the characters themselves and the grey lines of morality within power is why this campaign is a success, and I think its the true story CoD should be telling (most the time not all the time) I always loved the quotes when dying that are thought provoking anti-war wisdom from the real world.

People say his betrayal was executed poorly.
Understand, man was always in it for his own group and himself.
    He’s a PMC.
Doesn’t care much on being good, just on being paid and doing his job to a T.
He never shows true hatred to the 141, even in his betrayal scene, he wanted them to move on. He wanted them to leave without shots fired. He didn’t even start their fight in that scene.
Showing that he wisely chose to not attack the 141 nor Mexican Special Forces when he could had. Instead he chose to be defensive.
To add, he possibly had the choice to kill the Mexican Special Forces if he wanted to. Instead he chose to let them live and probably wait till their business was over with Shepard and their current operation to release them.
To me, not even a bad guy. Yeah, he betrays them under ORDERS that he always takes seriously. When he was ordered to care for the 141, he did, so when he was ordered to take over the operation entirely, he did. Just like his character has always been. Never a moment of personal hatred or grudges that appears out of no where.
He’s just another man in the cog of modern warfare. That’s most likely how he views himself and figures that’s fine. Hence everything within his character’s choices.
TL:DR, his character makes it sensible to his betrayal, not even close to random.

    • @ViperPilot16
      @ViperPilot16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes it makes sense why Shadow betrays 141, the contention I've seen most is it has no impact other then giving the player more goons to shoot at. In the 2009 game Shepherd himself kills two 141 members, and almost kills Price and Soap. In the new game Graves acting on behalf of Shepherd fails to kill any 141 members, and Shepherd lives. Part of having a good betrayal is having impact.

Dude has Homelander vibes "They love me, they love me. Until they don't. Kill them."

I think it would of been better to not have the betrayal. It be better to keep the players who played MW2 2009 on suspense especially atleast for me, i found him likable. Having a likable Shadow in theory would create more suspense and when the gaurd is down then boom the betrayal occurs and have it make sense, which is werid the game decides to do the betrayal first before No Russian. If i recall No Russian was one of the key factors for Shepherd's betrayal, the DSM had evidence of his involvement. If he spared Roach and Ghost, 141 or anyone else may had uncovered Shepherd's involvement then Russia would be justified in the war and America lose support for the war making Shepherd not a war hero but a crazy war criminal

Graves was only following orders, he didn’t want to fight 141 and MSF
