Way to go Marty, by telling the viewer a brief story about the song u have them totally engaged right from the start, the quality of ur videos and teaching has increased massively since 2018, when I first watched a video of yours
Fun fact: This modern chord pattern that is the one everyone knows was composed by Dave Van Ronk and used without permission by Bob Dylan on his self titled first album, as he didn't have enough songs. He asked Dave if he could record it after the session was already finished for Columbia records, and Dave said that actually he had plans to record it, and that he would rather Bob didn't. Dylan's response was "woops" :). Dave Van Ronk found a lot of pleasure when Eric Burdon & The Animals stole the chord pattern from Bob, and became way more famous than his version. He had the greatest laugh, and was also one of the greatest folk players and singers ever. RIP Dave. X
My Man Marty! I've been watching and learning from Marty since like 2006 nearly two decades! He helped me so much when I was first starting out and along the way to this day, by far the best guitar teacher I have ever come across. I've learned more from this man than probably anyone in my life. And here you are playing my favorite song, love it. My pops was an old school Chicago blues man and I first learned to play specifically so I could play this song with my dad and now that he's gone this is the song I play went I think of him. I was even so lucky to go to a studio right before he died and get a recording of us playing this song together with my pops singing. ❤️😎
Well done. I learned guitar in 2009 by watching Marty's videos. Glad to see he's still killing it. Funny how many things Marty does that I do. I think Marty taught more than just music, he brings the soul of playing music to the lessons.
Been playing for yrs and still stuck between 3 and 4 and this video just gave me more enthusiasm to keep creating my own unique twist on the songs... thank you again Marty.. hands down best all time teacher ever..
Thank you, Marty! What a cool guitar lesson for everyone! Your channel is always my first stop when I need help figuring out a song or wonder if I'm doing it the hard way.
Marty ,You are a Teaching guitar hero, Known about you for a while.. AS a working musician I have learned and performed , over 1000 songs.I have pulled up your song lessons to quicly figure out a song a bunch of times.. Thank You. You have helped 100,000's probably millions of guitarists, but I never heard you solo?... I just did, Feel so silly for doubting, you wouldnt sound magnificent. Beautiful , playing Man
Another cool video from Marty! This is literally the first song I "learned" as part of the old Esteban guitar course. I remember being frustrated by all the quick chord changes that seemed to interrupt what strumming cadence I could keep up, not to mention the F chord which I struggled to play in barre form although I did not know the name of the chord fingering at the time. My guess is that I could play it at a level 3 as I am probably an intermediate player now.
Nice job Marty, I watched you for years now. I think this was my favorite. All the different ways on a simple song. Sold my home in Cali saying hello from Mexico 🇲🇽 Via con Dios
that Green Day 'esk version was amazing! Love this song, when my dad used to play it was one his regulars. his guitar has been in the dark probably 40 years, not sure why. I just built a kit SG and know almost nothing. Wish me luck!
You're still smiling! Love the enthusiasm and exuberance. Your funky jazz improv is right up there with Carlos. Most XLNT, mi amigo. Some day, I'll be a tad beyond the basics. Your D chord looks diff from the one and two finger on the 2nd fret and ring on the third. Am I missing something with your fret work? And the bar F eludes the helloutta me. Mahalo. PS. Do you have Clapton's Let it Rain?
My level of guitar mastery is "has-been." So probably somewhere between beginner and intermediate at this point, lol. But I'm feeling the bug again, so we're gunna find out. I haven't played in 7 years. 15 years if you don't count two 6 week seasonal holiday gigs (desperate times lead to desperate set lists 😆) Great video man, as always. Thanks for making great content, and Happy New Year!
Nice video. I definitely preferred the sequences in 6/8 time, as recorded by The Animals. The ‘Green Day’ section, in 4/4 time, seemed to lose a lot of the blues feel.
funny enough, the F barchord has always been easier to play for me... that´s the one I learned quickly when learning the basic open chords and I´m playing that one to this day... never really bothered learning the "cheater F" :)
My first guitar made it difficult to play F. As an intermediate player I use both forms and find them useful in different ways. The "cheater F" is very useful when fingerpicking or flat picking out melodies. I rarely need that low F in the barre chord form to strengthen the chord, also the 4 fingered F chord allows me to do hammer ons and pull offs on the e and b, first and second strings. When doing heavy strumming I need that full F barre chord or at least a decent power chord version of it.
The last note you pick on every chord needs to be played open. The guy from the animals said this himself as he could not move his hand fast enough to play the note and then switch chords so the last note on each chord he played open string. And if you try it you instantly realise that it's true. Also needs to be a normal F not a bar chord
It's hilarious because I'm between level 1 and level 5 lol. I can do awesome things like the level 5 but then struggle with some things in level 1. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.
It seems like he designated the ability to improvise on a chord progression with any style as the definition of level 5 mastery, which is essentially the ability to do lead guitar. Since I have not learned lead guitar and can only do some advanced fingerpicking on acoustic guitar then I am limited to level 4 by this video's definition. I agree though, everyone has strengths and weaknesses. From the beginning I could easily do fingerpicking, but always struggled with chord shapes and fretboard navigation, but I practice to reduce my weaknesses but try to emphasize what strengths I have in guitar as well.
What level of guitar mastery are YOU at?
whatever level a monkey with a guitar is, because i sound indistinguishable to that
Melody chords, love your videos.
Always jamming towards the next level! Thanks for the inspiring lesson, Marty!
I'm happy with anything from Marty, this guy could poot into a box and I'd subscribe
Intermidate thanks to you Marty! Thank you for everything!
I love how marty introduces himself as if the whole guitar community doesn't already know him
Been playing for about 16 years, had absolutely no idea who he was tbh, seems like a great teacher though
Humble man
Way to go Marty, by telling the viewer a brief story about the song u have them totally engaged right from the start, the quality of ur videos and teaching has increased massively since 2018, when I first watched a video of yours
Youre videos are getting better, like fine wine

I'm self taught and understand this all and you explain it verbally and visually the way I internally and intuitively learned it. Great guitar teacher
Been playing for yrs and still stuck between 3 and 4 and this video just gave me more enthusiasm to keep creating my own unique twist on the songs... thank you again Marty.. hands down best all time teacher ever..
It's amazing how you can still get it which song it is in all renditions. Great work!
Thank you, Marty! What a cool guitar lesson for everyone! Your channel is always my first stop when I need help figuring out a song or wonder if I'm doing it the hard way.
Marty! You have helped me so much in my guitar journey. I’m even gonna start a cover channel with the songs you have taught me! Thank you so much!!
The first song I learned almost 30 years ago…and still a great song to play and listen to.
That was an eye opening Video Marty, great Job opening our minds up to more.

You’re a great teacher. Thank you!
to slightly correct you here, the time is actually 6/8, not 3/4
It's funny I saw this comment. One day I looked up the difference between 3/4 and 6/8 and the example song was House of Rising Sun lol.
Nice job Marty, I watched you for years now. I think this was my favorite. All the different ways on a simple song. Sold my home in Cali saying hello from Mexico 🇲🇽 Via con Dios
You just upped the teaching game. You rock Marty!
Always fun watching Marty work! Best instructional channel out there, btw!
The very first song I ever learned, taught myself to play it, in 1964!
I was 13!
What a brilliant insight of where a simple piece can go - thanks for that Marty 👍
Awesome video . Loved your final version
that Green Day 'esk version was amazing! Love this song, when my dad used to play it was one his regulars. his guitar has been in the dark probably 40 years, not sure why. I just built a kit SG and know almost nothing. Wish me luck!
Nice, will play around with this a bit.
Always learning more every day❣️
Making it cry and sing there on number 5 Marty. Sweet
Thanks. I don't think I'll ever get to level 1 but I enjoyed watching and listening
This was great. Thank you.
First song my father taught me and it really helped a lot.👍
Awesome concept for the channel! Thanks again Marty!✌🏻🤘🏻

Nice! Thanks! Newbie here on level 1 working on level 2
Marty is a legend
Awesome video! Great engaging explanation.
Thanks Marty, thanks Patreon!!
Great lesson. Thanks. Marty
Great channel concept you’ve come along way mate 🎼🤘🤘🤘
That was a sweet solo at the end. Danm dude.
I wish I knew the neck and scales like you do. One day maybe I will.
Stay safe out there Marty
✌ ✝ ❤
Marty, your last solo over the looper kinda of reminds me of the late great Terry Kath. Nice!
This Video was amazing, absolute Beast you are
Awesome teaching, as always.
Thanks Marty! Love this tune.
I would like to see a video about this song in which you analyze it from the perspective of music theory.
And other songs too.
Just an idea
Great video Marty
Cool funk version.
I would have never thought that could be done.
Marty always rocks !!
I've learnt more in this video than any others heaps.

Marty you're my hero sir keep doing the good work
Another powerful lesson from one of the best
Hey marty,Happy New Yr,awesome lesson,on this subject look up Frijid Pinks version from the 60,s😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
This is super helpful.... thank you.
Really cool intro
Thank you marty, now I have to pick up my guitar and add up my spices on this delicious recipe you gave us.
The one and only!! Marty!!! So great!!
I feel like I learned so much from this video thank you! Awesome video!
Oh( Marty you have to do more like this great,🎸
That L5 version was dope!
Best part of thevideo is those two beautiful gibson guitars
Classic Marty, great job!
I make music because of this guy 🤟🏼❤️🤟🏼
Nice video. I definitely preferred the sequences in 6/8 time, as recorded by The Animals. The ‘Green Day’ section, in 4/4 time, seemed to lose a lot of the blues feel.
If you haven't, you should check out the Doc Watson version.
Brilliant!
funny enough, the F barchord has always been easier to play for me... that´s the one I learned quickly when learning the basic open chords and I´m playing that one to this day...
never really bothered learning the "cheater F" :)
So many quirky chords come from the augmented F. I wouldnt play it any other way then then cheater style
i envy you lol
My first guitar made it difficult to play F. As an intermediate player I use both forms and find them useful in different ways. The F barre chord would be the correct way to play it if you want to sound like the record
Anyone else think that the f bar chord is easier to play than c major? Just me ? Ok
I love this except for all the camera angles it’s amazing
Question, you use the full non barred chord on the F but not the full C chord? I always try to use both unless I’m Barring the F.
Marty you are great.
I was kind of expecting the Doc Watson version to be the level 5.
#Marty..you amaze me, you are a real living giant genius..
I wonder how it feels to be the guy that teaches the world how to play the guitar.
How do you come up with what notes to play over the singer? Is that just by ear or is there a theory over the a minor scale????
Frigid pink the hard rock version is my favorite
He does realise it's shanty not chanty
Thank you
The internet is a great source for learning and entertainment
Legendary!!!
Sea shanties... From Club Dread. Yeahaaaaa!
What are the strings that you are picking in the arpeggio? My old brain is too slow to see them.
Sweet!
sorry dude but I am so used to the YTP Videos ! they are funny as hell , I laugh for an entire day : )
8:28 Wanna know a chord that doesn’t have a powerchord version? The H chord.
You’re God Level!
Marty is basically guitar Jesus
You should make shirts that say Marty is my spirit animal
You says it's great for beginners because it's easy and yet Brian May in one of his tutorials for this same song reckons it's quite difficult .
I've been playing it with a barre F but the root progression is more sexy w the cheater F
haha, you're getting old Marty. Good stuff, keep going, stay healthy, all the best.
The last note you pick on every chord needs to be played open. The guy from the animals said this himself as he could not move his hand fast enough to play the note and then switch chords so the last note on each chord he played open string. And if you try it you instantly realise that it's true. Also needs to be a normal F not a bar chord
the punk version turned into holiday in cambodia
GReen day version is great. Now, we should ask - does anyone remember the version of House of the Rising Sun by Frijid Pink?
Very nice thans a lots...
THANKS
