I love how Brian talks through this with humility and modesty. One of the best guitarists ever yet takes the time to explain things to the common man/woman/child/guitarist. I’ve noticed he’s done this forever (star licks anyone?). Very humble. Very human.
For a virtuoso guitar player like Brian May teaching & talking about basic guitar stuff, that is very humble. He's like Superman teaching a tot how to ride a bike. Others would probably be talking about scale, tapping, hammering & how to make a guitar sound like a supersonic jet. But he pointed out even the most common beginners' woes in guitar playing like those muted or slapping strings & the trouble of changing chords. Boy that sounds just like me who even at 60 still plays like a beginnner at day two. Cheers to you Brian!!!

One of my favorite guitarists of all time and he shows something so easily missed but still such a key quirk. I've played this song countless times over the years and I was today years old when I discovered that open note being sounded because of the early liftoff from each chord. And now suddenly I hear it clear as day and it's what gives the progression the extra character. Thank you Brian May! It really is the little things.

Or, as another art Master had said: "Be water" This is the best lesson ever! Thank you Brian!
Thank You Mr May, 40 years ago I tried getting guitar lessons, the instructor ran through House of the Rising Sun , told me the chords, I remember A and B, he said to practice till next lesson, I couldn't even hold a single note let alone make a chord, the guitar quickly went out of tune, I didn't pick one up for 25 years, until a coworker gave me some correct basic lessons, I had always tried to figure out House of the Rising Sun and I thought there were 2 low notes played before the strum and pic , now I finally know how it is correctly played, Thank you Sir and for all your great music.!
I learned how to play this song back in the early 80's still play it every once in a while, I like the chord progression. Thanks for sharing this with us! Keep rockin!!
There is no one like Brain May when it comes to guitar. That open G at the end of each chord run is the secret to that Hilton Valentine tone. BRILLIANT!
Thank you so much for this insightful guitar lesson Mr. Brian May. This lesson is priceless. With the in-depth focus and attention to detail given with the chords, picking, strings, frets, strumming, guitar, etc. Brian May is by far an accomplished guitarist and musician. But is also quite humble, down to earth, and a wonderful teacher. Such an absolute treasure.
I've always wanted a friend with even decent talent to sit down and help me. Having someone of your caliber take the time to share on the internet is awesome. It wasn't available in my youth. Thank you! So many will appreciate this. Ironically, this is one of the first rhythm songs I tried to play because of the F chord (hard for newbies and it was recommended to me). Never expected to realize its a rock solid lesson on the importance of the right hand. Took me forever to get to where holding the pick, the angle of the pick and the general timing becomes a "feel" thing. Have to be comfortable enough to feel it, not think about it. Lots of subtleties with the right hand on this song and its what makes it so special. Again, thanks. Appreciate.
Hi Brian! I am Tikva, mother of 4 from Israel. I want to tell you a story. Queen was my first and biggest love as a teen. The only band I know every song in which album and what year it came out. I've been through a lot at last 20 years and lately came back to music. Few days ago dicovered your channel... Last saturday I did something very ecxiting - a jam with my two older sons - me on guitar, 12-years-old on keyboard and 10-years old on drums (just started to learn). It was the first time we played together... I felt like i was dreaming... So perfect moment I never couldn't amagine. The craziest thing is that we played this amazing song again and again until it went well. My son's teacher wants to work with us on this song, I just didn't understand how to play it. Now I do... You posted this video 2 day after! So thank you, Brian and God bless you! Love you a lot...
Nice of him to take the time to explain such a basic technique. In his explanation of what actually IS a fairly easy riff, the most helpful thing he said was, "It's best not to think about it too much." It's easy to get hung up in analyzing it while you're playing it.
what a great lesson! not only musical, technical... brian may shows his greatness again through humbleness, paying this homage to hilton valentine... thanks, brian!
Hilton Valentine was almost the one guy who got me into the guitar. I used to listen to Animals records as a kid and want to play them. Needless to say, House of the Rising Sun was the first thing I learnt when I picked up my first ever Fender (Gemini) acoustic, back in 1988. However, THE actual guy who sparked my interest in guitar was none other than yourself! I remember watching you play on some programme or video back in the 70s (about '75, I think ... I was 6 years old) and was mesmerised and can even remember thinking, "I want to do that". So, there you are. You inspired me, Hilton made me do it. Thanks for this tribute to Hilton. Very sad loss. (BTW, his playing on Worried LIfe Blues is sublime and even includes some bending of the strings. I often think this recording is one of the best blues renditions ever. The band play off one another perfectly). Cheers Brian.

This was really fun to watch. I don't play guitar, lessons years ago but I was not a good study and I wanted lady fingernails so, on to other things for me but I really enjoyed watching this little video and getting an understanding about the technicalities. This song is tattooed on my soul and as little as one chord identifies it and brings it all back to me. I was about 14 when this song came out but I thought it was masterful and I loved it. Thank you bri, for this wonderful tribute to Mr. Valentine. R.I.P.

Hi Brian I learned how to play this song a long time ago but never realized the little imperfections and "feel" that the original guitarist put into it. This was very informative and educational, always loved this song as well as a lot of other Animals songs like Don't Bring Me Down etc. Eric Burdon had such a great voice! Thanks for doing this...👍
Dr. May, you've always been one of my greatest guitar heroes, and watching you teach the first song my dad showed me on guitar was a nice surreal spot of my day. Thank you.
I've always loved Brian's tone, and skill. And was a big fan ever since I read about you and your Dad building The Red Special. A truly class act! Thank you for so much, for all you have given the world!
House of the Rising Sun was the first rock song I ever saw played live. Since I just got guitars a few months ago I've been wrapping my head around the chords (I've been a keyboard player for decades). Thanks to this video, I was able to pick up my Strat, and with just a few minutes of noodling, I'm able to play this song. Great job Brian!
Brian clearly explains to us mere mortals the secret of truly legendary guitar playing = those of us wo are merely competent clearly understanding the difference, but gently weeping because we can never reproduce the perfection of the masters, never mind compose our own opus magnum. This is why the truly great musicians achieve immortality in history.
I love how you explain things like this Bri. Amazing song, and very interesting method to play that kind of... riff? Please Take Care and GOD BlessYou!!!!
At the age of 13 listening to keep yourself alive in rare records in manchester and attending concerts all over to being taught house of the rising sun (with my BM copy in Oz). A lot older. The world certainly has changed. Keep up the good work Bri not sure James Rundle will be happy stealing his thunder!
Thanks Brian for highlighting those open strings. Certainly true that picking the full chord never captures that classic recording by the Animals. I found the original American Blues version some time ago, that was also a very a powerful song.
Oh! Hello again Bri. Thank you, I’m gonna learn it NOW! It’s just..amazing to have the possibility of to learn song from the best guitarist of all the world in this lockdown. Have a good day, thank you Bri!
I remember coming home from school and seeing the Beatles when I was 11 in '63 singing "Love me do" with a cutout of a covered wagon in the background and wearing black polo neck sweaters and immediately knew I wanted to learn to play. Then this very song by the Animals gave me something to learn that was instantly recognisable and very cool! Great choice and thanks Brian. Music gives us such great memories doesn't it? God bless and keep safe
Thanks for this Brian. I learned this as a 16 yo 50 years ago on a cheap nylon string . In my early 20s my guitar ( Eko 12 string by then ) went into its case for the next 40 odd years until I convinced my wife to see your film a few years ago . My interest was rekindled and I took my old guitar out of its case , repaired the cracked top and started again from scratch . My dear wife , who never really was into Queen in her early years is alo now smitten and we screamed along with 50 odd thousand others at your Adelaide concert last year . And now we are remodeling my workshop into a music lounge and I have an RS you kindly signed for me a year ago along with the old 12 string and a six string acoustic to keep me company into my dotage 🕺 Kindest regards from downunder
Thanks Mr May. That's how I've interpreted it (but you're much more eloquent in your explanation), I've never been able to play it consistently well (although others think/thought I did), it's subtle and clever✌️😊👍 As you say, it's best to let go and let a stream of consciousness take over, it's perfect in it's imperfectness✌️✌️💜
Dr May to the rescue, again. Was about to give up, yet again, on my guitar playing when you come around and make it easy and irresistible to keep going...Thanks, my Brother! ♥️🎼
One of my favorite songs to play on guitar with my good friend Levi playing drums. Thanks for sharing and love to tips you give which I'll keep in mind next time we're playing.
Like many other commenters, this was also my first song I learned from my dad when I was 11. And put the guitar down for a year because of that DARNED F CHORD 🤯 ! Finally got it though....or so I thought. Now I hear those open note transitions between chord changes. Thank you😊
It is so comforting to see such a legend like Brian May, struggeling with the tuning and intonation of a certainly physical perfect setup guitar, just the same like me. (Seems to be part of the job). Sometime I heard the story of Eddy van Halen, using two identical guitars, one correctly tuned for recording thirds and the other for fourths and fifths. 😊

There was a community center where we lived near Dallas. I was 12 when I took my first group guitar lessons there. I still have the mimeographed songbook, and this was one of the songs we learned. That great mimeo smell is long gone though. Thanks for the memories, Brian.
Hi Brian! Fantastic! Yes, we were kids when first listening to this.... Thank you so much. It is great to see / hear you! Bless you all from the US💫
As i have already stated...... a rock legend giving a lesson about other legends, everything dressed with humbleness and expertise.
Thank you sir! My strat is honored to get yout tips!
And I am quite emotioned knowing you might read my comment... you! Holy moly! Mr. Brian May!.....
Back in the day this was a beginning Guitarist Standard...I still play it 40 years later, but I never fully appreciated it until now...Thanks Brian!
5 STARS!

Hey Brian, just wanted to say your music has got me through some tricky times in life, and I thank you so much. Have followed Queen since the age of 10 and I'm hitting 40 this year. Please god I get to see you at the 02 this year, god bless you and the lads and of course RIP Freddie! 👍
The thing with lifting the hand: I never did that - I shall never fail again!! Thanks so much for sharing and I’m so happy to see you healthy! Never stop! It’s an order
Thanks for doing this...👍
Thank you Sir Brian for posting.
For the record: it's Am, C, D, F, Am, C, E... Am, C, D, F, Am, E, Am, E
My father thought me more than I could think of.
Brian May is AWESOME. he explains how this song is played, like he's discussing it with a friend. instead of the whole lot of us totally amazing.
Fascinating. I was expecting a tutorial on BRIAN’S signature sound and style. Like all of us, he’s a student of other players that shaped HIS sound.
Thanks for complimenting me.
You arer the best guitarplayer ever!
Definitively my FAVORITE guitar player!
Thank you for complimenting me.

Thank you so much for complimenting me.
I remember some 30 years ago trying to learn this stuff for hours, days. Now Brian May himself has taught me this in a few minutes. Thanks!
Hi Brian, greetings from a fan from Holland! 🇱🇺
Love seeing this! First song I learnt on guitar.
Same. :)
Thanks Brian for highlighting those open strings. Certainly true that picking the full chord never captures that classic recording by the Animals. I found the original American Blues version some time ago, that was also a very a powerful song.
God bless you Brian - a great, humble and beautiful human being!
Oh! Hello again Bri. Thank you, I’m gonna learn it NOW! It’s just..amazing to have the possibility of to learn song from the best guitarist of all the world in this lockdown. Have a good day, thank you Bri!
What a joy watching the Master himself speak of, and in awe of another Master .... to quote Wayne’s World, we simply aren’t worthy!
Making hard work of something simple.
Thank you, Dr May. What a great lesson about an old great song. ❤
And now we are remodeling my workshop into a music lounge and I have an RS you kindly signed for me a year ago along with the old 12 string and a six string acoustic to keep me company into my dotage 🕺
Kindest regards from downunder
Why complimenting me way too much. Please the pleasure is all mine
A pro analyzes his craft!!! Didn’t understand much but loved listening.💥💥💥
Divino!!!
❤️😅✨✨✨✨ Gracias bri
🤩
Thanks Mr May. That's how I've interpreted it (but you're much more eloquent in your explanation), I've never been able to play it consistently well (although others think/thought I did), it's subtle and clever✌️😊👍 As you say, it's best to let go and let a stream of consciousness take over, it's perfect in it's imperfectness✌️✌️💜
Dr May to the rescue, again. Was about to give up, yet again, on my guitar playing when you come around and make it easy and irresistible to keep going...Thanks, my Brother! ♥️🎼
Out of sight is never out of mind
Brian, you are loved by the world, bless you. 🎉❤
Omg hi Brian love you so much greeting from a big fan in Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you so much for complimenting me.
@Rob MacGowan REAL
Thanks, I never noticed this before! God bless, Dr. May! :)
One of my favorite songs to play on guitar with my good friend Levi playing drums. Thanks for sharing and love to tips you give which I'll keep in mind next time we're playing.
You are such a good communicator and instructor, Brian! Thank you! And we enjoy your accent, too ❤️
Thank you for complimenting me. God bless you
Brilliant Brian! 😍🎶
You're like the kick ass grandpa I wishedvi had growing up.. God bless you man 🙏💯👊 Freddie would be proud of you ALL!!
Brian, you must be the most softly spoken guitarist around.
Great to get some tutorial instructions from you.
Be safe and well.
Like many other commenters, this was also my first song I learned from my dad when I was 11. And put the guitar down for a year because of that DARNED F CHORD 🤯 ! Finally got it though....or so I thought. Now I hear those open note transitions between chord changes. Thank you😊
God bless you, Brian.
GREAT Lesson in guitar playing!! YOU ARE TOO COOL BRIAN!!! I really enjoy your videos!! QUEEN FOREVER!!!🎸🎸🎶🎶
Better not said. Thank you for torrent love and support
I love your guys music if my mom never showed you guys I would not be the person I am today
About the first thing that I ever learnt to play and I've done it wrong ever since! Now, you've shown me the right way! Thanks Brian. God bless. Grant
Brian, the most knowledgeable guitar teacher and most down to earth Master ❤️
Thanks for the compliment.
"Niftly"...love that! Thank you, Brian, I have to play this one every Wednesday night.
God bless and be well!
You are perfect guitarplayer and very good music teacher. I hope you are well. Kind regards from Croatia.🥰♥️🌍
Es una alegría ver que Brian y Roger están bien! Gracias Brian por compartir con tod@s un momento de tu vida y tus conocimientos! : )
Todo el amor desde Argentina!!!
I have battled to sort that rhythm since I first attempted it in 66 - eventually just used the easy one! Great to hear from this humble maestro.
Out of my league , so much thanks Brian for doing this .
