One of the first 'rock' songs I learned on electric guitar in 1965 - I was 13 yo - Jr. High garage band! Still a go-to campfire song, minus arthritis, of course... and there's 'Louie, Louie'; 'Seventh Son'; 'Hang on Sloopy'; 'Wild Thing'; LoL. Thanks, Lauren, for the memories 😊

Great tutorial! Thank you! I'm a 66 year old beginner and I'm working on this song and the F chord, sometimes I can do it and that makes me happy. I have very small hands, my baby finger is only 1 3/4" long, I didn't think it was possible when I started but with practice it's happening, YAY!

It's amazing how our bodies adapt to whatever we're doing repetitively. When I first tried to play with a guitar strap standing up, I thought there was no way. But I just kept doing it and one day it seemed quite natural. I'm 62 BTW.

There are things that you cleared up for me whilst playing the song. Thank you so very much. Love and blessings from the bush veld in South Africa.

Many of us no doubt have had that experience of being at some party or another in our formative youth and having to put up with that person who would deign to pick up the random acoustic sitting in the corner and inevitably start rather crudely strumming that achingly familiar chord progression. Props once again for breaking down and articulating the essential applications of nuance and feel to a dare I say, deceptively simple song.

@@LaurenBateman I learned that song from a local guitar teacher. He taught to strum the cords as a repeated sequence and when I thought I had it down in a 4/4 beat he refused to play it with me at a party because he said I had it wrong. What happened is he failed to mention the arpeggio and the 6/4 timing. Turns out he was like most guitar teachers I have seen that want to show off their abilities but don't know how to teach. Sounds familiar anybody? Thanks Lauren your a refreshing exception.

Great introductory lesson to this song! Something I would like to suggest is because the timing is everything with is piece, what would you recommend a beginner set the metronome rate at? I have tried everything from 60 - 240 with the timing at 6/8 and still can't quite get it. Years ago I did play this song flawlessly but time has taken a toll. Thanks

Thanks so much! One great exercise that I do with students is to have them set the metronome for 10BPM higher than their maximum speed. You can learn more about this concept on this video th-cam.com/video/TrsmVeOi2HA/w-d-xo.html

Apologies Lauren. It seems your one guitar I've noticed is a thin body Epiphone Hummingbird. I have been trying to find one and only see the regular 4" thick. Any thoughts or idea's? And love the song as well.

I have always played this with the open F chord, not the barre chord. I never learned it with the barred F, interesting. I guess I need to listen to the record, lol.

@@LaurenBateman I love those models, especially the 69 RS with the electric headlight covers.
I just recently found your channel and have been binge watching alot of your material. I consider myself a low tier intermediate player that's trying to learn theory and I like how you explain things.
It's also refreshing to see a new face and personality in the guitar community. You're the first female instructor that I've seen that doesn't use cleavage to pull views. Not that I have anything against cleavage, just don't think that's the appropriate time to be showing off your goods. Thank you for putting out great content!
